{5} The Boy Who Used To Live Here

"'A man of words and not of deeds is like a garden full of weeds," Hope and Skye were in what looked like child's bedroom. It was old and there were cobwebs covering everything. Hope and Skye were sitting in front of a chest, reading a poem they found. "'And when the weeds begin to crawl, it's like a bird upon the wall. And when the bird away does fly, it's like an eagle in the sky. And when the sky begins to roar, it's like a lion at the door. And when the door begins to crack... it's like a stick across your back.  And when your back begins to smart, it's like a knife inside your heart. And when your heart begins to bleed, you're dead and dead and dead indeed."

The girls heard a voice behind them making them jump, "Not exactly the most uplifting reading material," When the girls turned they saw their father walking toward them.

"It's like an old book of rhymes." Hope said looking back down at the book.

"There is a lot of weird stuff in here." Skye added looking back up at her father.

Klaus sighed a little and looked around the room, "You know, Hope, Skye, I'd rather you didn't play in here, actually. All the splinters and the dust," Klaus listed off. The girls just looked at him with innocent expressions. "And the bats."

"There aren't any bats in here." Skye said. She tilted her head innocently not knowing why her father would think there were bats in here. She and Hope were in the room for awhile and they didn't see any.

"I've seen no evidence that your Uncle Elijah doesn't sleep in here, hanging upside down." Klaus said smiling. Hope and Skye giggled a little at his statement.

"Dad, was there a little boy who used the live here?" Hope asked. Klaus' face went blank and he walked over to the two girls, bending down in front of them. He grabbed the book that was in their hands and closed it.

"Come along, sweethearts," Klaus put the book back into the chest. "We can discuss ancient history another time." Klaus extended his hands out to the girls and they grabbed them, standing up. Before they got up completely, Hope grabbed something from behind her. Then, the three of them walked out of the room.

Marcel huffed as he paced around in the circle of candles. Marcel stopped when he heard two pairs of footsteps and the door to his cell opening. He turned to see Hope and Skye walking toward him slowly. "Hi," Hope and Skye said to him. Hope held up a figurine, "I think this is yours."

"Hope, Skye," Marcel looking down at them. Hope tossed the figurine to him and he caught it. Marcel looked down at ti and then back up to the girls, "I haven't seen this in a century."

Skye looked at the figurine too and then back up to him, "So, you're the little boy who used to live in our house."

"Once upon a time, I lived here with your dad." Marcel said confirming what Skye said.

"He keeps you down here because he thinks you want to kill him," Hope stated. She glanced up at him again, "Do you?" Hope asked.

Marcel bent down slightly so he could be eye level with the two girls. "Listen, I will tell you anything you want to know. Okay? If you get me some blood from your dad's stash."

Skye rolled her eyes, "We're seven, not stupid."

Marcel chuckled, "Right. You know, you're both also pretty courageous. Come down here and talk to a stranger."

Hope shrugged in response, "We're not scared. We're Mikaelson witches." Marcel looked down at the two girls with a slight grin.

"I'll tell you what, let's start fresh, all right?" Marcel asked. He bent down onto one knee in front of the two girls. "It is very good to see you both again, Hope and Skye Mikaelson. My name's Marcel." Hope and Skye smiled at him. The twins sat down in front of the older man. "You know, I'm surprised your parents haven't stormed down here looking for you."

"Our mom trusts us." Skye stated.

"Yeah," Marcel looked down to his feet, "But your dad's never trusted anyone in his life."

"If he took care of you when you were little, why do you hate him?" Hope asked him. Marcel snapped his head up to look at the two girls. "What did he do to you?"

Marcel shook his head, "Your dad, he raised me. He made me who I am. Now, you ask if I hate him. Well, it's hard to hate the person who made you what you are. You just end up hating yourself. The truth is I would like to hate your dad, I really would. It would make things a lot easier. But, um... you can't hate someone who you loved for so long." Hope and Skye were quiet as they thought about what he said. Suddenly, the three of them heard crashing from above them.

The two girls stood up quickly and Skye spoke, " Something's wrong. We have to go."

"No, wait, girls," Marcel stood up and the twins turned back around to face him. "It's not safe. I need you to let me out of the circle."

"We can't. Our dad will be mad." Hope said to him.

"No, he won't. I'll keep you safe." Marcel said trying to reason with the girls.

"We can protect ourselves, and our mom and dad. We're strong enough to stop the bad guys. We're strong than anybody things." Skye said. Hope took off her bracelet and Skye took off her necklace. A breeze was felt in the cell.

"Wait, girls. I know you're both strong, Okay? That's how I know you guys can let me out of here. I need you to trust me right now. Your dad rescued me. He raised, and I knew your mom when she was a baby. We're family. What does your mommy say about family?" Marcel asked as they heard thunder.

"That we stick together, always and forever." Hope replied.

Marcel nodded, "That's right." Marcel extended his hand out for the girls to take. The three of them heard a man shout from above. The girls turned to the voice, but Marcel brought their focus back to him. "Okay, look at me. Do you trust me?" Marcel asked. Hope and Skye looked at each other while they thought about it.

Klaus walked down into Marcel's cell trying to find Hope and Skye. "Hope, Skye?" He called out for them. When he walked into the cell, he saw some corpses around the room. Marcel was no longer in the cell and thunder sounded from above. That's when Klaus noticed something. He bent down and picked up Hope's bracelet and Skye's necklace that were laying in the floor. Klaus glanced around the room one last time and then he speed off.

Klaus walked around the streets of New Orleans looking for his daughters. He could hear the people talking around him as he looked up and down the streets. Klaus turned and saw Hope, Skye, and Marcel sitting on a bench. "Marcel!" Klaus shouted. The three stood up and Hope and Skye ran toward Klaus.

"Dad," Hope and Skye said. The two looked at him to see he was covered in something red. "What happened?" Both the girls asked. Klaus looked down to his hands and thought of what to say.

"It's, uh... it's, it's paint," Klaus stuttered a little. "I made quite a mess, didn't I?" Klaus looked down at the two girls and smiled at them.

"Where's mom?" Hope questioned him.

"She's at home, waiting for the both of you," Klaus bent down to one knee in front of them. He glanced at Marcel, who looked away from him. Then, Klaus looked back to the girls. "Are you both okay? You took off your bracelet and necklace off."

"Daddy, don't be mad. W-We let Marcel out and he kept us safe." Skye said. She looked slightly guilty and so did Hope.

"I'm not angry, sweethearts, come here." Klaus pulled the two to him and the three of them hugged.

"Don't be angry with Marcel, either," Hope said as they pulled out of the hug. "He's our friend."

When the three of them got home, Hayley hugged the girls and checked to see if they were okay. When she saw that they were, she lead the girls to their room to put them into bed. Hayley walked to Klaus who was leaning against the railing. "Are they asleep?" Klaus asked her. "They were quiet when we walked home."

Hayley walked over to the railing slowly, "They didn't exactly buy your story about paint on your hand." Hope told him.

"When I think about the horror they must have witnessed when Marcel killed those men, it just..." Klaus trailed off and shook his head.

"Um, no. They didn't see anything, actually. Marcel swept them away before they could even understand what was going on," Klaus looked up to look at Hayley. "He told them to close their eyes and sing."

Klaus smiled slightly, "They called him their friend." The two of them laughed a little.

***

Hayley smiled as she walked into Hope's and Skye's room. The two were asleep in their bed and they were cuddled up together. Hayley placed a picture of Jackson and the girls when they were a baby on the nightstand. She reached out and turned off the light, crawling under the covers. Hayley looked down at the two girls for a moment and then laid down, placing her arm over to Hope and Skye.
