02; Bird Is The Word

The moment Beverly stepped into class she almost immediately regretted it, as all the eyes seemed to follow her as she took her seat.

She sat in between a kid in a faded jacket with an patch of the American flag on the sleeve and the flannel kid from earlier, unaware of the looks they shot over her head.

"I told you." Stiles mouthed, jerking his head towards an oblivious Bev. "Smell her or something."

Scott shook his head wildly, gritting his teeth as his best friend made even more spastic movements. He finally gave in, leaning forward slightly to sniff her hair, freezing when she turned towards him.

"What do you think you're doing?" She raised an eyebrow, a slightly amused look on her face.

"You just remind me of someone I used to know." Scott trailed off, leaning back into his seat. "That's all."

"Well, I hope that's a compliment." The blonde chuckled lightly, pulling out her notebook. "The name's Beverly, in case you get confused again. Most people call me Bev though."

"Scott." He wet his lips and nodded towards the boy on the other side of her, who stopped any frantic movements he had been making. "That's Stiles."

"Adderall kid." Bev greeted, making him look at her in confusion. "It was a guess, I used to take it too."

Two girls slid into the classroom, whatever conversation they'd been having died on their lips when they saw Beverly. She let out a quiet sigh and pulled out her phone, getting real tired of the attention she'd been receiving that morning.

Before she could beat her score on flappy bird a text blocked her veiw, sending the satanic bird falling to the bottom of the screen.

From Unknown:
The offing was barred by a black bank of clouds and the tranquil waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth flowed somber under an overcast sky seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness

Everyone looked up as a woman walked in, reading the test message out loud as her heels clicked across the floor.

"This is the last line to the first book we are going to read." Ms.Blake explained, Beverly locking her phone boredly. "It is also, the last text you will receive in this class. Phones off."

The class grumbled as they turned off their phones, Bev just letting out a quiet snort and dropping it in her bag. She wasn't a fan of authority, especially when it came to limiting her technology use.

She pulled out her book and opened it to the page written on the board, her eyes skimming the page but not retaining any information.

At some point the Scott kid had been called out of class, but she didn't really notice as she was too busy drawing on the palm of her hand.

"What's that?" Stiles whispered, nearly falling out of his desk to get a second look.

"I don't know." She shrugged, guiding the blue pen along her skin to form another petal. "I think it's a flower."

"Do you mind if I ask you a question?" He asked, straining his neck to watch her draw. She didn't reply at all, the boy asking anyways. "Where did you co-"

He was interrupted by a thump, the whole class turning to look at the window as the broken and bloodied body of a bird slid down the glass.

Ms.Blake walked over to the window in curiosity, the wonder in her eyes soon turning into fear as she saw the mass of birds flying towards them.

More of them started to smack the window, Bev freezing as she watched the glass crack, her eyes widening in terror.

The teacher started to scream at them to get down but she was frozen in her seat as they started to break through, the birds flying recklessly around the room.

Stiles gripped her wrist and pulled her against him, talons raking at her hair and catching her skin as the class erupted into screams.

Bev found herself crushed between Stiles and some other red head, or maybe it was strawberry blonde, covering her face with her hands.

Then it all just stopped, whether the birds flew back out of the window or just dropped dead in the room, the loud cawing and piercing screams fading into silence.

Stiles slowly sat up, Bev and the other girl following as they stared around the room. Feathers were everywhere, caught in people's clothes, their hair, while scratches adorning most of the students' skin.

"Are you okay?" Stiles breathed, Bev turning to stare at him with wide eyes.

"Yes, because getting attacked by birds on the first day of school is just a normal day for me." She hissed, trembling where she sat. "No, I am not okay."

Beverly squeezed her hands into fists to stop their shaking, not being able to stop since the attack had finished.

She jumped when something settled on her shoulders, looking up to see Stiles adjusting his flannel over her shoulders.

"Thanks." She mumbled, slipping her arms through and hugging herself. She paused for a moment before looking up at him in confusion. "Why are you being nice to me?"

"What?" Stiles seemed to be caught off guard, looking up from his phone to stare at her in confusion.

"I mean, all any one has done this morning is whisper or stare at me for god knows why," She took a deep breath, rubbing her face. "But you keep-"

"Excuse me," They looked up to see Sheriff Stilinski step between them, his gaze locked on Beverly. "Do you mind if we talk for a moment outside the classroom?"

"Dad, I don't think that's necessary-" Stiles began, but he was already leading her out of the room.

What Stiles didn't know was the reason the Sheriff's department had gotten to the school so fast was because they had already been on their way, their phone blowing up all morning to state the return of Erica Reyes, who had been missing for months.

Stiles ran up to the door and looked through the tiny window, Bev's back to him as he tried to get his dad's attention.

"Miss Reyes, I'd like to bring you down to the station, if that's alright." He spoke slowly, touching her arm carefully.

"Reyes?" Beverly's eyebrows furrowed, the girl staring at him like he'd just said that remake of Footloose was better than the original. "Why is every one calling me Reyes? Or Erica for that matter?"

"Have you been experiencing any head aches? Possible head trauma?" He continued, the girl jerking away from his touch.

"The only one with head trauma is you, as-" The door behind Bev opened, Stiles's hand covering her mouth.

"Okay, dad? I think you and I need to have a talk." He hissed, jumping away from her suddenly. "Did you just bite me?"

"Don't cover my mouth next time." She countered, crossing her arms as Stiles pulled his dad down the hall a little.

She watched in amusement as they argued, the Sheriff seeming to grow more confused and irritated as his son waved his arms around-something he did often, she noticed.

Stiles let out a groan and walked over to her, Bev raising an eyebrow.

"Do you have a driver's license, ID, something?" He rushed out, the girl nodding slowly. "Could I see it?"

"It's in my bag, but why do you need it?" Her question remained unanswered, Stiles pulling her into the classroom and towards her knocked over desk. Bev rolled her eyes and bent down to open it, a gasp escaping her lips.

"What? What is it?" Stiles bent down next to her, his face falling when he saw her cradling her phone.

"It cracked." She pouted, holding it up to show her broken screen. He just stared at her, his eye twitching slightly. "Oh, right."

She rummaged through her bag and grabbed her wallet, opening it up and pulling out her driver's license. Bev and Stiles went to get up at the same time, their foreheads slamming together in the process.

"Son of a bitch!" They chorused, rubbing their heads as they stood.

"Chill, alright?" Beverly sighed, wincing slightly as she handed over the plastic card and followed him out of the room. If she didn't have head trauma before she had it now, that kid's skull had to have been made of steel or something.

"See? Dad, look." Stiles handed it over, the Sheriff examining it for a moment before a look of disappointment crossed his features.

"I'm sorry, Beverly." The older man sighed, shaking his head and giving it back. "You just resemble a girl that went missing a few months ago."

Bev just nodded, giving him a small smile and smacking the card lightly against her hand.

"Bev?" The blonde turned to see her mom rushing down the hall, her face creased in worry. "Oh my god, I just heard. I was in a meeting and I didn't-"

"Mom, I'm fine." She assured, being pulled into a bone crushing hug. "Mom, I'm okay."

"Sorry, sorry." She let go, smoothing down her skirt. "Grab your things, okay? I'm gonna take you home."

Beverly nodded and slipped into the classroom, moving around other students and grabbing her things before meeting her mom in the hall.

"Where'd you get that?" Her mother asked, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and gesturing towards the flannel.

"Oh, it's-" The blonde turned around the call after Stiles, but he was on the phone and already rushing down the opposite way. "It's a friend's."

"Look at you, already making friends." Her joked, squeezing her arm. Bev just laughed lightly, rubbing her thumb against the worn material.

"Yeah, I guess."
