11 | and an obscurial is unleashed (let terror reign!)
THEY STOOD TOGETHER on the top of another building, looking down on the streets of New York. Dorothy stood closest to Newt, their hands almost touching. She wanted so badly to intertwine them, but a sort of fear came over her, and she didn't. Rejection was harsh, and she didn't know if she could handle it, especially since she had never felt anything like what Newt made her feel before.
From the edge, she began to see the chaos that was forming on the streets, and fear was struck inside her. Her home, her city...it was under attack.
"Jeez...is that the Obscuria-thing?" Jacob asked, alarmed by what was happening. Sirens wailed, but they knew that the police could do nothing.
"That's more powerful than any Obscurial I have ever heard of..." Newt trailed off as a loud explosion sounded. That was then they were the fire...the burning, and Dorothy gulped at the sight. Her city was burning, the place she had called home all her life, the place she met all her friends...it was burning.
Then, Newt gave his case and a journal from his pocket to Dorothy. "If I don't come back, look after my creatures. Everything that you need to know is in there."
He didn't make any eye contact with her as she uttered, "What?" She looked at him with wide eyes, knowing that he said, but not wanting to believe him.
"They're not killing it," he said, looking at the town. Their eyes meet only for a moment, and she was sure that Newt could see the fear in hers. Then, he jumped, Disapparating as he did.
"Newt!" Dorothy cried after him, distraught by what she had seen and heard. There was a spark inside her then that had ignited. She had to help, she had to make sure that Newt was okay. Dorothy couldn't stay there, helpless. No, she had to do something meaningful with her life. And the chance was then.
She slammed the case into Tina's hands, "You heard him - look after then!" She said to quickly before Disapparating as well, going down to the streets where chaos reigned.
Once she was down in the streets, she knew that there was no turning back. Dorothy saw the back of Newt, and she stalked up to him, barely missing him as he Disapparated somewhere else.
She looked up to see the Obscurus writhing around the square. It was angry - hurt even - and she could see the faint outline of a face inside, but she wasn't close enough to tell clearly who it was. Again, she Disapparated to get closer.
"To survive so long, with this inside you, Credence, is a miracle. You are a miracle. Come with me - think of what we could achieve together!" she heard Graves shout at the Obscurus.
She gasped, bringing her hand to her mouth as she listened. It was Credence - he was the Obscurus. And Graves...Graves wasn't who he posed to be, was he? No, something was wrong with him. He needed to be taken down, just from hearing that, she knew.
She Disapparated again, seeing the British man she was looking for. "Newt!" she yelled, catching his attention. He quickly moved to her.
"It's the Second Salem boy. He's the Obscurial," he explained as Dorothy nodded.
"I know," she said, "But how? He's not a child."
"I know - but I saw him - his power must be so strong - he's somehow managed to survive. It's incredible," Newt said in chopped sentences.
There was another scream from Obscurus - no, from Credence - and Dorothy gulped. She made a decision. He couldn't be killed, he was innocent. They couldn't kill him.
"Newt! We have to save him," Dorothy said as Newt nodded. Then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Tina going towards Graves. And they Disapparated.
They land on top of building, Apparating as fast as they could to the different ones to keep up with the Obscurus.
"Credence! Credence, we can help you," Newt yelled to him in a calm manner.
The Obscurus just dived towards them, but they were quick to Disapparate before continuing to chase him. As they chased him, many spells were casted at the Obscurus, and Dorothy turned to see a line of Aurors had gathered and where starting to harm Credence without a second thought. She couldn't help but be disgusted by it.
The Obscurus veered to avoid their spells, leaving behind black particles as it did. It screamed as it made a dramatic display, rising up in the air as spells hit it from all angles. Finally, it crashed onto an empty street, a black tsunami taking out everything near it.
Dorothy and Newt, who were still on top of a building, watched at the Obscurus as it slammed onto the ground just outside of the City Hall subway entrance.
There was a sudden quiet then, as if everyone was afraid to breath. Then, a large screeched emitted from the Obscurus as it rested at the entrance. And the two watched as the black mass shrunk down to the small figure of Credence as he descended down the steps into the subway alone.
Then, the two Apparated to the subway. It was a long, Art Deco designed station tunnel that had many signs concluding that the Obscurus had been there. The chandelier creaked and a few of the tiles had fallen or had been cracked. Then, the two heard deep breathing, sounding like a frightened panther.
The two creep quietly across the platform, Dorothy intertwining their hands out of fear. She didn't even realize it as Newt looked down at them slightly, smiling, before trying to find the Obscurus again, just as it slid down the ceiling.
It was much calmer from when they saw it outside. The two calmly went behind one of the pillars before Newt started to speak, "Credence...it's Credence, isn't it? I'm here to help you, Credence. I'm not here to hurt you."
Dorothy saw Newt calmly move out from behind the pillar, giving her a small look. She too looked out slightly to see the shadow of Credence, curled up, scared, within the mass of the Obscurus. And her heart ached for him.
"I've met someone just like you, Credence. A girl - a young girl who'd been imprisoned, she had been locked away and she'd been punished for her magic," Newt gently said as Credence listened, feeling slight acceptance from his words.
Newt crouched down on the floor as Credence looked at him with the tiniest bit of hope laced on his face.
"Credence, can I come over to you? Can I come over?" Newt asked, taking small steps forward. But, as he did, a sharp burst of light blazed out of the darkness, striking him, causing Newt to fall to the ground.
"Newt!" Dorothy screamed running towards him as Graves marched down the tunnel.
Credence ran at the sight of Graves, who was firing more spells at Newt, some of them hitting Dorothy as well, causing her to shriek and to fall in pain. Then, Newt rolled out of the way and towards the pillars, bringing Dorothy with him. He shot back, but his efforts were easily deflected.
"Are you alright?" Newt asked Dorothy with concern. The girl just nodded, pain still filling her veins, but she knew that it wasn't the time to complain or have a pity party. There were more important issues on the table at the moment.
Then, Newt continued to duel Graves, who ran to the train tracks. Dorothy saw Credence cowering behind him, and she so desperately wished so could run to him and give the scared boy a hug. But, she didn't think it would be the safest option at the time.
Then, she saw Graves throw Newt up in the air, and a scream came from her lips. Newt landed on his back, weak, and tried to cast another spell at Graves, but it was apparent that the man was much stronger than him.
Graves continued to whip out spells onto Newt. It was like he took pleasure in the act with hunger and satisfaction in his eyes. As Newt cried out in pain, Credence succumbed to the darkness again. It was only then that Graves stopped, looking at the Obscurus, mesmerized by it.
He fell to his knees beneath the dark mass. "Credence," he breathed out, his eyes never the leaving the 'beautiful' creature.
The Obscurus let out a scream, running towards Graves, who Disapparated just in time. Graves, Newt, and Dorothy Disapparated and Apparated all along the tunnel, trying to avoid the Obsurus's path. It caused the tunnel to disintegrate even faster. Then, suddenly, the force accelerated, becoming a gigantic wave that consumed everything in sight before flying out through the roof.
The Obscurus screamed and dived, bursting through the subway roof as Dorothy ran along the tracks.
"Credence, no!" she screamed at it. Inches from Graves' face, the Obscurus froze. Slowly, so slowly, it rose back it, swirling with a gentle nature, staring at Dorothy.
"Don't do this - please," she pleaded with him, knowing that the same boy she had seen on the steps of the bank was still in there somewhere.
"Keep talking, Dorothy. Keep talking to him - he'll listen to you. He's listening," Newt encouraged her.
Inside of the black mass, Credence reached out for Dorothy. She was the only person who had shown him uncomplicated kindness. He looked at her desperately with a hint of fear in his eyes.
"I know what that woman did to you...I know that you've suffered. I know what it's like to not be cared for, to be put to shame for something you can't control. But you need to stop this now...Newt and I will protect you..." Dorothy spoke with kindness and vulnerability. She then pointed to Graves, "This man - he is using you."
"Don't listen to her, Credence," Graves denied, "I want you to be free. It's all right."
"That's it..." Dorothy said to Credence, calming him. The Obscurus began to shrink, the dreadful face becoming more human - becoming more like Credence's face.
Suddenly, a group of Aurors busted into the building, advancing as Dorothy whipped her head around before turning back to Credence.
"Shh! Don't, you'll frighten him," Dorothy commanded them, looking at Credence with a sort of kindness, a silent promise in her eyes that said she would protect him.
The Obscurus, though, let out a terrible moan and began to swell again. The station crumbled even more as Newt and Dorothy both went to protect Credence.
"Wands down! Anyone harms him - they'll answer to me -" Graves commanded him before turning back to the Obscurus, "Credence!"
"Credence..." Dorothy called with kindness and fear in her tone. It was then that the Aurors began to pelt the Obscurus with spells.
"NO!" Graves roared. It was then that they saw Credence from within the black mass, his face contorted, screaming. The spells continued as he howled out in pain.
Aurors continued to aim spells at him, their efforts never stopping even though it was most brutal. But, the pressure became too much, and the Obscurus finally seemed to implode - a while ball of light taking over the black mass.
The force brought Dorothy, Newt, and the group of Aurors stumbling backwards. And once it was over, only small tatters of black matter were left. As soon as she stood up, Dorothy found herself in Newt's arms, sadness filling her.
Graves then climbed up onto on the platform, getting as close as he possibly could to were the remnants of the black mass were. The Aurors advanced towards him.
"You fools. Do you realize what you've done?" Graves seethed at them.
Madam Picquery emerged from behind the group, going up before them, "The Obscurial was killed on my orders, Mr. Graves."
"Yes. And history will surely note that, Madam President," Graves moved toward her, still on the platform, "What was done here tonight was not right!"
"He was responsible for the death of a No-Maj. He risked the exposure of our community. He has broken one of our most sacred laws -" Madam Piquery said.
Graves laughed bitterly, "A law that has us scuttling like rats in the gutter! A law that demands that we conceal our true nature! A law that directs those under its dominion to cower in fear lest we risk discovery! I ask you, Madam President - I ask all of you - who does this law protect? Us? Or them?" he then smiled bitterly, "I refuse to bow down any longer."
He then walked away from the Aurors as Madam President ordered, "Aurors, I'd like you to relieve Mr. Graves of his wand and escort him back to -"
As Graves moved, a wall of white light appeared in front of him, blocking the man from moving any farther. Graves turned, firing spells at both groups of Aurors facing him. Spells flew from every angle towards him, but Graves parries them all. Several of the Aurors went flying as Graves smirked.
Newt then pulled the cocoon from his pocket and released it at Graves. The Swooping Evil soared around him, shielding Newt, Dorothy, and the Aurors from Graves' spells, giving Newt time to raise his wand.
Newt sent a spell through the air and around Graves like a whip. Graves tried to hold it off as it tightened, but he staggered and struggled, falling to his knees as he dropped his wand.
Then, Tina appeared out of the group of Aurors. "Accio," she commanded and the wand went flying into her hand. Graves looked around at them with a deep hatred in his eyes.
Dorothy and Newt advanced towards him as Newt raised his wand again. "Revelio," he whispered. Then, they watched as Graves transformed. His hair turned white, face turning pale as Dorothy gasped. There was a murmur through the crowd, all of them muttering the same thing; that's Grindelwald.
Madam President moved forward as Grindelwald said, "Do you think you can hold me?"
"We'll do our best, Mr. Grindelwald," Madam President said as he stared intently at her. Two Aurors then moved forward, bringing him from his knees and forcing him to the entrance. As Grindelwald reached Newt, he smiled, "Will we die, just a little?"
He was then led away, out of the subway as Dorothy brought her hand into Newt's. He smiled at her as she returned it. Finally, it seemed that everything was calm.
only one chapter left before the epilogue!!!
