Skylor Chen. A redhead with a deep passion for cooking who gives off a mysterious aura wherever she roams, who desires nothing more in life than watching the sunset, who mesmerizes you with her blue eyes as deep as the ocean. Loving Skylor Chen was something that most men she became close to experienced. Her beauty would draw you in, until she broke your heart. It may not be her fault, but it happened to every boy she met. But Kai Smith was different. He saw her for who she was, beyond her beauty, and he was a true friend to her. But loving her would be his greatest downfall.

"Kai, where are you going?" The earth ninja stopped Kai in his path as he was about to exit the bounty, which was parked at the Ninjago Harbor.

"To see Skylor," the Amber-eyed boy straightened his fiery red bow tie nervously, "I'm going to confess," he didn't make eye contact with his friend as he fiddled with anything his hands could find. Cole's heart sank. My chance is finally gone, he thought.

"Good luck," he managed, his thoughts clouded and tangled. Kai flashed him a quick smile before leaving, bouquet in hand.

"I love you," the words were said with genuinity and sentimentality, like a light breeze's whisper. The girl receiving the confession gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. Ninjago park's flowers were blossoming around them, and they were underneath the biggest willow tree, the overhang concealing them from the rest of the world. Just Kai and Skylor, like it should be.

"Kai, I can't-"

"Don't be afraid," Kai took her hands in his. A look of shock appeared in her wide eyes, but she didn't pull away. Kai slowly pulled her in, and kissed her.

"Kai, I can't do this-," Skylor said, backing away nervously.

"You don't-you don't feel the same?" Kai whispered, deflated.

"I do. That's why I can't stay." And then she ran. Running faster than the slow breeze, than tree branches swaying in the wind, leaving the master of fire alone. All alone.

Kai returned to the monastery, feeling a little bit relieved at having finally told her, but worried she'd be angry. He trudged up the steps and opened the front door. No sooner did he walk into the living room than he saw Cole sobbing on the couch, the others comforting him. At Kai's entrance, all eyes went wide, and they stared. Cole, wondering what happened, looked up, only to meet eyes with the master of fire.

"Cole? What happened?" Kai asked urgently, standing in place. The others slowly left, ignoring Cole's protests.

"How'd your date with Skylor go," Cole asked, unable to keep the bitterness from his voice. He gasped at his own tone, but didn't apologize.

"Cole?" Kai asked nervously, taking a step towards him. Cole noticed an interesting design on the wooden floor and studied it like it was a rare species.

"I love you, Kai!" The earth ninja finally blurted, his eyes only looking up when he realized what he had done. It all clicked inside Kai's mind. "But you don't feel the same, do you?" The anger of his tone was replaced with pure sadness. He ran off towards his bedroom.

"Cole, wait!"

"Kai, you made your choice. You love Skylor," Cole retorted, barely audible. The other ninja entered the room and scanned the area for Cole. Nya's eyes were slightly cold when they landed on Kai, and Jay looked like he was about to burst into tears.

"Come on guys, let's go find him," Lloyd ordered.

"Wait! Guys!" Kai called, but his friends ignored him.

Loving Skylor Chen was his biggest downfall.
