Nine-year-old Nya Smith and her brother Kai took a stroll through Ninjago Public Park. Cherry blossom trees bloomed, surrounding the narrow dirt path they were taking. Delicate petals fell to the ground like rose-colored raindrops, making the scene similar to one out of a Disney movie. The skyscrapers weren't visible through the trees, and it was like they were miles away from the action in their own little world. Suddenly, Kai bent down to face her.
"I'll be right back, Nya. I need to get our water bottles that I left on the bench. Stay right here." Nya smiled. It would finally be her chance to buy a birthday gift for Kai! Little Nya waddled off towards the city, searching for a store. In her toddler-like excitement, she didn't notice that she dropped her wallet on the road.
Nya finally found the store she was looking for, Doomsday comics. She had saved up her money to buy an expensive collectible comic for Kai. She browsed each of the wooden shelves, which were decorated with comics for all ages. The sunny yellow walls, the superhero action figures on display, and the kids around her, she felt like she was at a playground. But little Nya managed to stay focused. I need to get this for Kai, she thought. As soon as she found the item she needed, she rushed to the cash register to pay and return to her brother before he noticed she was gone. Going to pull out her wallet, she realized something. It was gone, along with all the money. Little Nya did what any determined little girl would do: cry. The water ninja created lots of water, this time coming from her eyes. An old woman walked over to her.
"What's the matter, child?"
"I saved up $300 to buy a birthday gift for my brother, but I lost it!" She wailed. The woman bent down and pulled her into a hug, before handing her a stack of dollar bills.
"Exactly $300. But your brother that gift," she winked her blue eyes, and with that, it was like she vanished without a trace. Nya's smile returned, and she purchased the comic and fled to the cherry blossom path before Kai arrived. Back then, she may have been too young to realize how kind that woman was. But she did now. And that woman was staring right at her.
"Hello, Nya," The woman greeted her as she entered a local tea shop. "I am Mistaké, and I believe we've met before."
