the right person

a short story about unrequited love.

his smile—there was something very poetic about it. the way only one corner could reach toward the stars while the other lingered in the only place it knew.

the way his lips parted when he was told a joke that was more than just a little funny. the music that reverberated from his lips was something unexplainable—but if you had to just explain it in just one word, you would use mellifluous every single time.

but it wasn't just his smile.

it was the way his eyes could give away any type of emotion he was feeling without giving any hint in his face.

the starless overcast that arose when he was upset—or the softened sparkle that appeared when he was with the right person.

but there was only one catch.

it wasn't you.

no matter how hard you tried—or even yearned for it, the road never led back home.

home—at least that's what you had thought you were to him.

your heart ached for him. you didn't even know it was humanly possible for your heart to physically ache for another person. but here you were, and there he was.

you swallowed, your eyes were currently fixed at your feet. you stood there, your brain angrily telling your eyes to look up—almost as if it was daring them to disobey.

you knew that when you would finally decide to look up, the frail, withered string that was currently piecing your heart together, would then become undone.

but nonetheless, your eyes darted up in fear of your brain. only to have your previous expectations a reality.

he swayed slowly to the melody of the song that played. you didn't care to listen to the music. his blue eyes were clear—painting a portrait of the moment to which he could store away forever.

the pulchritudinous girl on his arm smiled intently up at him as if they were the only two people in the room.

it was then that the music began to deafen. it became instantly drowned out by the beating of your own heart inside your chest.

until it stopped.

everything stopped, and that's when you realized something.

she was there, with him, while you were here, alone.
