it was time to go back to school, which meant facing the rumors about you. over the summer your mother died of cancer, it was awful news to your family, but you all managed to let her spirit live within you. to everyone else at your school, you were a freak who lost her mom.

but that's the opposite of what your friends thought.  

the school had a banner of the front doors that read 'welcome class of 1984!' in gold and maroon colors. it didn't excite you one but, you were still a junior and had a whole year ahead of you.

you entered the school building to notice everyone staring at you. the states made you feel self conscious but you tried to find your friends.

after searching the school, you went outside to see them standing in a huddle conversing. you felt giddy inside and walked over to them. your best friend since kindergarten, mouse, noticed you first and smiled at you.

"aw, y/n!" she was followed by your other two best friends from kindergarten, maggie and walt, who had been dating for two years. they embraced you and it made you feel a lot better.

"i missed you guys!" you said.

maggie nodded. "we all missed you too. and hey, we're sorry about your mom. it broke our hearts what happened."

you bit the inside of you cheek. "anyways! how were your summers?"

walt shrugged. "my dad just talked the entire summer about his old fraternity and going to dartmouth."

"still?"

"yep," walt sighs. "but at least i got to spend time with mags." maggie cuddles up to next him and kisses his cheek.

mouse chuckles. "well, i've been doing volunteer work and organizing things for the school year. i need to look like a leader for harvard!"

you shake your head. "no you don't! you're already the number one person in our grade! harvard will be crazy to not accept you."

maggie hits your shoulder. "hot boy alert twelve o'clock."

you spin around. "hey, im right here!" walt says.

the new kid wore black sunglasses and took them off as if he was in slow motion, halting everyone's movements. he makes eye contact with you and begins to stride towards you. girls around you scoff as they see him walking to you. your heart pounds against your chest with every strip he takes.

his y'all figure hovers over yours as he smiles down at you. "hey, y/l/n."

"hey, dolan."

his eyes scan over your friends and he nods to them. "i'll see you at the pool?"

you nod. "sure."

he smiles at you before walking away.

"spill it!" maggie yells.

"right now, y/n!" mouse joins in.

"okay okay!" you laugh. "well, over the summer i went to the swimming pool for the swim meets and we just met. he was nice. he was even my first kiss, so."

"oh my gosh!" mouse, maggie and walt gasp.

you laugh. "i have to go to class. bye guys!" you begin to walk away to hear their protests.

"we are not done here, y/n!"
