Go home

After a couple days, Ethan, Karl, and Rose were let go. Karl had to come every Thursday for tests, Ethan had to come every other Monday for tests as well. When they made it home, they were pleased to see that the house was cleaned, Alcina must have sent a maid to clean up the house while they left.

Rose was excited to return, she babbled and laughed when she recognized her room. Ethan laughed and put her down, she crawled and used the little table to stand up. She bounced up and down when she saw the paper and crayons.

"Wanna draw?" He sat down next to her and gave her and himself a piece of paper, then placed the crayons closer so Rose could grab them. He started drawing a horse.

Ethan always had a thing for drawing, his whole life he sketched out animals and people, sometimes buildings. He never thought about making a career out of it, he just saw it as a way to pass time and focus on something. As he drew the horse, Rose drew... something. It was green and purple, a weird mass of something. Ethan thought it was Moreau.

He stroked the crayon down to make the neck, and curved it outwards to make the chest, then he moved up to the back of the head, and made the back of the horse. For some reason, Ethan always thought of music whenever he made a line, something was musical about the drawing process.

He drew horses a lot, his grandfather had a ranch, and whenever they stayed there when he was a kid, or a teenager, he sat outside and drew the horses. His cousins would always play tag, or hide and seek, and though he did play along, sometimes he would quit and leave to draw the horses. He loved how they were so powerful, yet so quiet.

His grandfather would always let Ethan brush the horses, and take them out of their stalls to the field. There was one horse, Melody, who loved him. He smiled remembering when she would nudge his shoulder with her nose, or when she was older, lay down next to him in the field when he would draw.

"Ethan?" Karl came up behind him, Ethan jumped at the sudden presence. "Whoops, sorry." He laughed lightly before sitting down next to him.

"You're okay, what's up?" Ethan put down the crayon and looked at Karl.

"I didn't know you could draw, but it doesn't surprise me, you seem like the type."

Rose held up the paper she was drawing on, she laughed showing the two her picture.

"Wow! Rose you're so talented!" Ethan smiled, Karl chimed in, "very expressive!". Rose laughed and bounced up and down, "horsie!" She giggled and pointed to Ethan's drawing.

"Yeah! Horsie! Good job Rose, you're so smart!" Ethan pushed his drawing towards her, she giggled and clapped. Her little blonde curls bouncing while she moved in excitement.

Ethan leaned towards Karl, and rested his head on Karl's shoulder, who wrapped his arm around Ethans waist. He felt like everything was still, like there was nothing that needed to be seen besides what he was living in, his daughter laughing and dancing in joy, Heisenbergs body next to his. He could feel the fraying edges of his life slowly intertwining to become whole again.

Rain started to fall and hit the windows, making a soft tapping ring through the house. It was nice, thunder echoed through the village, it sounded like they were under the waves crashing onto the shore.

"Horsie!!" Rose laughed and pointed to the sky, both men looked up, confused.

"Horsie! Run! Horsie run!!" She laughed.

"Horsies are running in the sky?" Ethan repeated.

Rose laughed again. Ethan and Karl smiled at her, finding her imagination nice and comforting.

"I'll start dinner." Karl kissed Ethans temple and left the room, Ethan blushed. He then took his paper and started drawing again, putting in details, crosshatching shadows and defining the muscles of the horse. Rose continued drawing her own picture as well, using vibrant colors and making different shapes.

"Hm...?" Ethan heard scratching from the other side of the wall, and got up to open the window to see, there was a little gray cat, soaking wet and shivering.

"Oh no!" Ethan gasped and hopped over the open window, and picked up the cat, who was the size of his hand. He hopped back over and closed the window.

"Oh you're so tiny..." Ethan pet it's head and placed the kitten down on the floor and sat next to it, he took off his jacket and then started to lightly dry it being careful of how tiny it was. Rose crawled over and giggled and reached to touch the small animal.

"Be careful honey, she's a baby, just like you..." he took her little hand and guided it into petting the cat gently. After a couple minutes the kitten was dry and warm, and was meowing in confusion. Ethan smiled, overflowing with love of his new little friend.

He picked the kitten back up, and walked out into the kitchen and tapped Karl's shoulder, he turned around, "yes?"

"Look! I found them outside, they were caught in the rain..." Ethan lifted up the little cat, and Karl's eyes widened, "oh my god it's so little!" He laughed and pet the kittens head, who meowed again.

"What are you gonna name it?" Karl smiled, Ethan was shocked.

"I'm naming it?"

"Well, you found them! I feel like you should name it." Karl pet the cat again.

"Uh well, I guess puddle, since I found it in a puddle." Ethan shrugged.

"Wow, original!" Karl teased. "Now, is puddle a girl or a boy?" He flopped her over, and then looked up, "it's a girl." Ethan nodded, "okay..." puddle meowed again and got back up.

"She's so small!" Karl laughed again.
