Old scars, Future hearts
I love Grandson thank you goodbye.
"I can't talk right now, he's almost here and I'm starving." The blonde sighed and checked the time. "He's late and all."
Rhinestones on a rose gold band sparkled under the orange hue of the ten foot lamppost. The watch had been a birthday present two years prior.
She sighed once more and looked up the road again. Headlight beams could be seen gradually nearing from the distance. As they got closer, the blonde could make out the colour of the car.
Red.
"Oh shit, look who finally turned up. I've got to go now, I'll see you at home babe. Love you." As the car slowed and pulled up beside her, she shut off her phone and smiled at the driver.
"Hey handsome," she smiled a painted smile, flashing dazzling teeth behind the too wide grin.
"Hey, I'm so sorry I'm late. Gracie wanted me to help with homework. You hungry?" Awsten smiled back, a little nervous that he'd already fucked up.
Ciara threw her head back and laughed, opening the door and climbing it. "Yeah I am hungry," was the reply, blatantly ignoring his apology.
Awsten relaxed slightly and started the car back up. "Ok awesome. There's been a slight change of plan because you know I'm broke. I have like eight dollars and I'm borrowing the car," he snorted and stifled a giggle before continuing, "so instead of that restaurant you love, I thought I would surprise you with something else."
Ciara just nodded and started ahead at the road. Awsten had a feeling she would love it. He remembered where he first asked her to be his official girlfriend after their fourth date. The car had broken down and they were sat for hours at the side of the road just talking about nothing and everything.
It was one of the best nights of his life. No one had interrupted them, as there was hardly any signal - just enough to call a tow truck - and they didn't have a whole lot to be concerned about. It had snowed earlier in the day and even though it had settled, it wasn't very thick.
After about a half hour of driving, they pulled up to a grassy bank overlooking the city.
"Um why are we at the side of a road?" Ciara asked, her nose turned up in disgust.
"There is where I asked you to be my girlfriend," Awsten smiled weakly, "It had sentimental meaning and I thought it was a cute gesture."
"Yeah, well, you thought wrong." She scoffed and threw open the car door. As Awsten watched her walk away from the car and throw herself onto the grass, a wave of dejection and hopelessness washed over him. He really had fucked up. The picnic he had spent hours on, finding the right food, preparing it and making it look pretty, sat in the backseat. It looked pretty meaningless and worthless now.
Above the skyline of the buildings, the sun started to set. Dull pinks and oranges mixed together in a swirl of sadness. Blues faded to black and stars twinkled softly.
On the vacant passenger seat lay Ciara's phone. The screen lit up to show a picture of her and a brunette Awsten hadn't met before. He frowned. From what he remembered, Awsten had met pretty much all of her friends. Granted she didn't have a lot but still. It must have been someone she met when they were on a break.
The notification that had brought the screen to life, was a message.
"Hey beautiful, it's getting late and you said you would be back before it got dark. Has that faggot kidnapped you are something? Let me know what's happening, I've got a surprise for you 😉🍆❤"
Knives. Razor sharp, rust covered knives. That's the only way Awsten could describe the pain in his chest as.
It's happening again.
You knew it would happen again.
No one would ever be around for you.
No wonder she got bored of you so quickly, she always knew you were a disappointment.
Thousands of angry, white hot thoughts branded his brain, ripped through his skull, swarmed through his body, tore up his stomach and beat up his heart.
Before the flood pushed it's way through, Awsten grabbed her phone and got out the car. At the sound of the slamming door, Ciara looked up. She saw her phone in Awsten's hand and then the murderous rage on his face. Her phone was launched at her like a missile before she even had time to take a breath.
The message was still prominent on the screen and still running through Awsten's head.
"I knew it." He said, voice cracking slightly. "Geoff said I couldn't trust you and he was right. About everything. About the mark, about you, even about the stupid project. He was right and you were wrong."
He laughed a broken laugh and walked back to the car. "Wait!" Ciara yelled. "How am I supposed to get home?"
But he'd already gone.

Steam arose from a plate piled with piping hot lasagne. In one corner a theme tune played from a tv like white noise. Geoff whistled on his way from the kitchen to the living room, dinner in one hand and a coffee in the other.
His high-pitched, slightly off-key whistle was cut short by a gasp of pain followed by a shatter as the objects in his hand fell to the floor. He felt his body drop. He couldn't breathe.
It felt like he was alive enough to have strength to die.
Nothing had ever felt worse the excruciating torment he was feeling. Like rusty knives through his heart.
Banging reverberated through the house, echoing around the skeleton incased within.

"Geoff."
"Awsten."

There were no words.
Instead, Geoff quietly cleaned, mopped and scrubbed the mess off his carpet and let Awsten cry alone.
Although Geoff's pain had faded to a dull ache, the younger was not so lucky. His head, his heart and his body hurt all over.
How could he have been so stupid? Words that fell so easily from her lips were sugar coated to hide the truth. Love decieves.
His sobbing had reduced to a sniffle but the tears were still falling fast. Geoff gently laid two pillows and a blanket beside him.
"My Dad's away for a couple of days so you can stay here. He wouldn't have minded anyway. I'll give you a lift to school in the morning." The brunette said, monotonous.
No reply was expected so when one didn't come Geoff wasn't dissapointed. No matter what Awsten had made him feel could wait until tomorrow. As much as neither of them wanted it, love was still there between them; it fucking sucked.
Slowly, Awsten unwrapped his arms from around his knees and let his body drop sideways. Geoff was sweet letting him stay. He wondered how long the stalemate would last.
Above his head, harmonious chords floated through the floorboards, resonating in his blistered chest. They ran deep through his bones and the lyrics that accompanied them swallowed his soul.
" 'Cause I'm dying to be your everything, everything
You know I'll always be around
I'd never I'd never I'd never leave you hanging out to dry
Because the world's gonna pass me by
But if you wanted,
I'd never I'd never I'd never leave your leave your side
I'd never I'd never I'd never leave you out to dry
I'd never I'd never I'd never get you off my mind"
When you're in high school but have the drama of people in their 20s-30s 🤷♀️ this isn't me coming back, I'm just sick and got bored. Love y'all xox
