Chapter 2: A Stranger's Welcome

Shockingly the man welcomed me. Though I was uncertain how he felt about a complete strayer in his home, part of me felt grateful for that. The place was a small but decent home, yet I found it beautiful. The lights were dim and the atmosphere counteracted the one outside.

"I haven't seen you around here before. Why is that?" He questioned me while my attention was off elsewhere.

"Well..." I stutter wondering how to give an exploration with it sound insane.

"I was venturing in the forest...and the storm him, so I ran to the nearest village I could" I explained.

Surprisingly he was okay with my answer, yet wondered if that was really my background. He left to go get tea so I could warm up, and in the meantime I contemplated the situation. After nearly dying and wanting to fulfill the debt I owe this man, I'm suddenly human. I ponder over the concept, but before could wonder more her returned.

"Do you have anywhere to stay?" He asked.

"I don't... I don't even know if I could go back home..." I replied with uncertainty in my voice.

I didn't have a home to go to. My home was a forest as as crane. I've never had an actual home or any family. It's always been me alone trying to make a living off of the brutal elements.

"Well... you're welcome to live with me" he said with a smile.

"You're so kind, but I feel like it's too much to ask" I reasoned

"It's alright really, as long as you help me around with work I'll be more than welcomed to take care of you" he explained.

His generosity made me speechless I was frozen in the moment. I already owe him my life and now he's housing me. Then selflessness he projected was admirable and remarkable in my eyes. I agreed to his offer. He may not be rich or living an easy life, but I'm willing to make that better.

We finished tea and headed off to bed. He said goodnight and left while I was thinking about what it'd be like to be a crane again. The though of it my feathers appear once more. However, they were as if they were made of light until I pulled one off. A slight pain rushed through me and I then stared at the feather. Words appeared on it saying "for each one you pull you're life begins to drain, you may find happiness off of pain". From what I understood is that pulling the feathers could potentially kill me. As confused as I was, the light made feather turned in to a real one with a soft and smooth texture. As panicked as a I was, I felt like like would be able to be alright as a human.

The next morning came, and I've left the feather on the ground forgetting all about it. The man found where I was and gazed upon the feather. Worried, I tried to get it before he could yet failed. He didn't witness any words on the feather like how I did which left me full of wonder. What was the reason for me to turn human aside from him saving me? Was there another reason why I'm human other than a debt...?
