Eternal Night - Chapter 10
I paced around the lab as Dr. Kostal kept switching out the slides for more slides.
"Okay, so what do we do?" Scott asked.
"I don't know. I just don't know," I mumbled, continuing my pacing.
"I have a crazy idea," Dr. Kostal said, standing up.
"What?" I asked.
"Would you mind if I took a sample of your blood?"
"Mine?" I asked again.
He nodded his head. "I want to examine your blood compared to what we have."
"Oh. Okay. Would that do anything?"
"I don't know but I can at least compare them. Maybe I can find something?"
"Yeah. Yeah, that is a good idea," I said, taking off my jacket and holding out my arm to have the blood taken.
"Your skin is so white," the lab assistant said, rubbing the crook of my elbow with an alcohol wipe.
"Huh? Oh yeah. It's that whole undead thing. We tend to be pale."
"But you're only half right?"
"Yeah. Half dead half not. I guess I'm just stuck in limbo."
"Is everyone so pale?"
"No. I guess it just depends on what part of the world you're from before you're turned. You just lose some of the luster that the living have. My parents are actually a lot paler than I am. They actually remind me of porcelain dolls just not fragile."
"I've never met one before."
"One what?"
"You know. A vampire."
"Oh," I mumbled as she pierced my skin with the needle.
"I'm sorry. We're kind of isolated up here in the lab and I don't have any sort of paranormal in my family."
"Not even a ghost?"
The girl shook her head.
"Interesting."
"You seem nice."
"I mean, most of us are." I watched as she focused her attention on my arm. "You're part of the purity pack, aren't you?"
Her face flushed as she diverted her eyes. I smiled at her, hoping she would see.
"It's okay. It hasn't been long since we were all demonized and seen just these soulless creatures without emotion."
"I am so sorry."
"Don't be. I can't blame you for how you were raised, just as much as nobody can blame me for what I am."
"That's true." She held up the three tubes of blood. "Okay. That should be enough to sample."
"Great."
"Oh."
"What?" I asked.
"You don't need a bandaid."
"No. A perk to being half vampire, we heal quickly."
"Huh. Fascinating. I wouldn't mind having that ability," she laughed lightly.
She handed the blood to Dr. Kostal who quickly put it onto a few other slides. He put them under the microscope and stared at the blood.
"Hmm."
"Hmm, what?" Scott asked.
"This is really different."
"What?" he asked again.
Clayton stood up and looked at me. "Your blood nullifies vampire venom. Even the stuff that is bonded to the human blood."
"How is that possible? I'm half vampire."
"Yes. So look here." He stepped to the side and let Scott look who then moved so I could.
"Can you describe this?" I asked.
Clayton took the old slide and smeared some of the blood from my tubes onto a new one and put it on the machine. "That's your blood."
"Right?"
"Have you ever actually seen full-blooded human blood?"
I shook my head.
He pulled the slide out and put another down.
"It doesn't look the same."
"No! It doesn't. So that's full-blooded human blood." He returned the slide with my blood. "Now, you see yours?"
"Yeah? Mine looks, weird. Why is it purple? My blood is purple?"
"Yes." He pulled another slide and put it under the microscope. "Now look at this one."
"It's black."
"This is vampire venom."
"Okay."
"And now," he said, switching out the slide again. "Watch what happens?"
He dropped some of the vampire venom onto the slide with my blood.
"What the hell?" I watched as the vampire venom attacked my blood.
My blood attacked back though. It actually encompassed the entire cell and changed it back to bright red.
"Did....did it change the venom to blood?"
"Yes! Yes! It changed the venom. You're hybrid blood is a cure for vampires."
"Holy shit."
"Yes! Holy shit," Clayton said.
"Geez, Cassidy," Scott said, sitting on a stool next to me.
"Now what?" I asked.
"Well, I don't know what this means for your case, but it could mean a lot for the scientific world."
"Uh, what's going on with it now?" Scott asked, bent over the microscope.
"What?"
Clayton pushed Scott out of the way and started turning knobs every which way. "Fascinating."
"What?" I asked again.
"Here. Look."
I took Clayton's spot and stared. The once vampire venom was changing again. It started to deep to a bluish purple.
"It's not turning into my blood is it?"
"I don't know. I honestly don't know."
"Can we go now?" Scott asked. "I can't deal with all of this that's going on. This is just too much."
"Yeah. Let's go. I need to think. And get food."
"Food is good."
