02 - Choose

"Where are you taking me?!" I yelled as two guards dragged me from the bathroom.

They gripped onto my biceps tightly as I tried to wriggle away from them. I kicked and screamed but none of it seemed to phase them at all. I didn't understand why they didn't kick me back, or even yell at me to stop. Did they not want to hurt me? If that was the case, they weren't doing a very good job because my arms were most definitely bruised right now.

When they brought me to a door, one of them opened it, threw me inside, then closed the door again. My knees slammed into the tile floor causing me to let out a pain filled groan. I guess I deserved that.

Getting to my feet I noticed I wasn't the only one in the small room. There sat a tall woman on one side of a metallic table. Her hands were folded and her brown eyes never left mine. She wore a white suit that was somewhat similar to Rat Mans.

"What is this?" I asked. "Why am I here?"

"Phase Three," she answered simply.

The fluorescent lights made her gaze extremely intimidating. So when she pointed to the chair across from her I immediately took a seat. The woman gave a slight nod before a screen descended from the ceiling. It was clear like a piece of glass, but I could see subtle waves of electricity flying across the screen.

With knit eyebrows I spoke, "Phase Three? I thought you said that the tests were over? What is this crap?"

"We don't have the killzone patterns mapped out yet, so we have to push further," she explained. "That's all I'm allowed to tell you for now. But let's begin, my name is Victoria and I'll be conducting this experiment."

I scoffed. "Yeah, I'm not going to do this. Put me back in the Scorch for all I care. I've had enough."

"You can't back out now. You already agreed to do this before we put you in the Maze."

"Oh, I've got news for you lady. People can change their minds. Wow! It's magic! So I'm going to leave right now and go back to my friends if you don't mind. Not that I care if you mind or not, 'cause I'm going to do it anyway."

I stood up and made my way to the door, but before I could turn the nob an image appeared on the screen. Turning on my heels, I fully faced it so I could get a better look. What I saw made my stomach go in knots.

In four chairs sat four people. They were tied down with ropes so tightly that there was no way they could even move. I stepped closer, squinting my eyes so I could examine their faces. Newt, Harriet, Teresa, and Minho.

"Take a seat, Anne," Victoria said dryly.

Reluctantly, I did as she said.

My eyes never left the screen as I watched their confused faces look at their dark surroundings. All of them had some form of injury already present on their person. Minho had a large bruise on his cheek, and Harriet had a long cut along her arm. Those two currently had it the worst.

"What kind of test is this?" I questioned, clenching my fist.

"Choose one to die."

I had to double take what just came out her mouth. I stared at Victoria, waiting for her two say that she was 'just kidding' or something along those lines. But no, she sat there and stared right back. She was waiting for me to answer.

"No one! I'm not going to choose one to die!"

She sighed and brought her finger up to her ear. "Injure Subject A5."

I watched as a man came out of the darkness with a small knife in his hand. He walked over to Newt and brought his arm above his head. Then the knife stuck in the boys thigh. He let out a cry of agony that made tears fall from eyes. Minho began yelling and shaking his chair, but he couldn't do anything about what was happening. Only I could.

"What the hell!" I screamed. "What the fuck is hurting them going to do?"

"If you're not going to choose one we're going to have to push you so you will. Even if it means we accidentally kill them all in the process."

After what seemed like forever, all of them were completely broken. Especially Minho because he wouldn't stop yelling insults at them. So much blood caked his face and clothes that if you glanced at him you would've thought he was dead.

Victoria looked happier then ever. The more I broke down, the more joyful she became. This is what she wanted, they knew I wasn't going to execute any of my friends. (Although my tattoo said I was the Executioner.) I was on the brink of complete madness. If I had to hear one of them get hurt one more time, I would give in.

"Anne!"

I tore my eyes away from the table and forced myself to look up at the screen. Minho had gathered enough energy to speak to me, which seemed impossible because of how weak he was.

"Anne, choose me! Kill me! Don't let them die too," he begged. "I'm not afraid to die."

Victoria smirked. "Aren't you going to accept his final wish?"

"I can't," I croaked. "I can't do it."

"Please, Anne!" When he said that, blood dribbled out of his mouth. "Look at me, I'm sucking dying already. Please, just kill me!"

I sat there in silence as I stared at his face. His beautiful face that I desperately wanted to remember. When his head fell, I knew he was going to die. Tears streamed down my face as I mustered up the courage to say the words that would put him to death.

"Kill him. Kill Minho."

I closed my eyes tightly and waited for the sound of his last breath. When it didn't come I looked back up to see men dragging his body away.

"He died before you made your decision, you have to choose someone else to die now," Victoria informed me.

"No!" I screamed. "No! No! No! You already killed one of my friends, you can't make me choose another one to die too! It's not fair!"

"Calm down."

I got to my feet and gave the woman the most hate filled look I could.

"If you say one more damn thing I will hurt you," I threatened.

"Choose, Anne. Choose one of your friends to die."

That sent me over the edge.

I launched myself over the table and landed on top of her. We both fell onto the floor with a hard thump that hurt the both of us. But I had so much adrenaline pumping in my veins that it didn't faze me. So I pushed myself on top of Victoria before wrapping my hands around her throat.

I probably would have killed her if a guard didn't come in and hit me in the head with the butt of his gun. After that everything went black.

•••••••

Rat Man was right. I did remember what happened to me in those three weeks. But one thing he didn't know was that I remembered something else.

I remembered what happened to me in the Maze. My first Maze.
