sixty-four

may day

The aroma of overly-sweetened coffee and an assortment of breakfast swirled around in the kitchen and overtook the residence. A pair of footsteps descended into the kitchen and the corner of her lips turned upward when she found Eddie at the helm of the ship, typing away at his phone and cooking.

"Should I be worried? You're cooking."

He turned to glance over his shoulder and stuffed his vibrating phone into the pocket of his pants. "I'll have you know my cooking has improved." He motioned her over with a nod and held out the mystery scramble to her mouth. "Open."

Olivia obliged and chewed on the food while he tried to watch for a reaction. She raised her eyebrows in amusement and giggled.

"It's just eggs, Eddie."

"It's not just eggs, Olivia," he rolled his eyes. "There's mushroom, spinach, and a whole bunch of other vegetables in this scramble."

"It's delicious." She rested her hand on her hip and gazed up at him with a raised eyebrow. "So...what's the reason for this impromptu breakfast?"

"The only reason is that I missed you. Don't get me wrong, you coming over and helping with Chris is great but I've been wanting some one-on-one time with you." He nodded over to the cabinet and turned back to the stove, lowering the heat. "Set the table? I'm almost done here."

She mockingly tipped her head at the man before sauntering over to the cabinet and pulling out two plates for them. By the time she finished laying out some utensils, Eddie was bringing over their food and sitting in the middle of the table.

"How are you feeling about Texas?"

When Eddie received the news of his father's retirement and the celebratory party his Mom was throwing in the patriarch's favor, the first thing he felt was dread. The second thing he felt was numb, especially after enduring numerous therapy sessions where the past was dredged up over and over.

"I can't wait for it to be over," he laughed into his cup and took a swig of coffee. "You're coming, right?"

"Still haven't decided."

"Because..."

"Because a trip to Texas isn't exactly what couples on a break do."

"Couples on a break don't exactly do this..." He gestured to their close proximity, if he were a head shorter, their noses would be touching. "Or this..."

Olivia inhaled sharply when she felt his hand creeping onto her thigh and gave him a swift kick to the ankle. "Hey! No. None of that."

"Come with me Texas, Olivia." Eddie bore his soft, gorgeous brown eyes into hers and smiled. "Please."

"Separate rooms, Edmundo."

"Promise."

"Mayday. Mayday. This is Firefighter Eddie Diaz on a department-wide channel. We have a fire at Metro Dispatch downtown. Point of origin appears to be on the second-floor records room. All non-essential personnel begin evacuation procedures. Repeat. This is Firefighter Eddie Diaz. Metro Dispatch is on fire."

Olivia was the first one off the engine, feet pounding quickly against the pavement as she eyed the smoky dispatch center. The sound of Eddie's voice coming over their headsets a few minutes ago was comforting but if there was anything she knew it was that things could change within a second.

"Eddie." Bobby's deep voice rang sharp through her ears and her eyes finally found the man's appearance as he staggered out of the building with a dispatcher underneath his arm.

"Records room on the second floor is fully involved," Eddie said. "Fire could spread to the third floor. That's the main floor. Hen. The clean agent system knocked him out for a second. He took in a lot of gas, but there could be a lingering narcotic effect."

"Okay, I got him," Hen said.

"Hen, I want you to set up a triage area in the parking garage next door," Bobby ordered.

"Copy that, Cap. I'm gonna need a hand."

"It is Monday," Jonah raised his hand.

"Fine. You'll do."

Olivia watched them and a few other medics from 133 walk off toward the parking garage before she turned back to follow her captain. "I want crews on the delta side, as well," Bobby instructed. "Chimney, put together a team from the 133, raise the ladders and start hitting that corner window."

"Copy that. Han, you're with me."

"Buck, Lucy, and Liv suit up. You're going inside. You're gonna hit the fire at the source on two."

"Copy!"

The trio were opening the compartments on the side of the engine and suiting up when they saw Eddie and Bobby doing the same.

Olivia glanced at Eddie. "Why is Cap going in?"

"May's still up there," Eddie responded.

"Feels like I'm missing something," Lucy spoke.

"Family history. Let's go."

"Donato, you're with me. Eddie, you're with Buck and Olivia."

Luckily for them, they have a few more sets of hands to help attack the source of the fire on level two and sweep the floor of any civilians. Buck and Eddie were holding one of the hose lines while Olivia stood beside them with a firefighter from the 133 and assisted with another hose line so they could regulate the fire sufficiently.

"This is Captain Shore," a voice crackled over the radio. They shut off the hoses so they could hear her better. "I need two firefighters for search and rescue. Worker named Carson Hayes, last seen on level two, could still be in the building."

"This is Diaz. Rivera, Buckley, and I are on two. We swept the whole floor."

"This is Dispatcher Russo. I think I know where he is."

"Go ahead, Josh."

"He told me he was going to the basement to connect power to the system. It's probably the electrical vault. I can meet you on two and take you down there."

"Negative, we got this."

"But I-I'm right by the fire stairs. I-I could be down there right away."

"Josh, you're a dispatcher, not a firefighter. Today, you're a guest in this house."

Olivia tore her eyes off the small fire and patted Eddie on his back. "Take Buck with you. We got it from here."

"You sure?"

"Go. Try and come back to me in one piece, though."

"I will."

Olivia blinked and stared up at the ceiling as she tried to push the tiredness prodding behind her eyes away. Fatigue ate away at every inch of her body and another yawn spilled past her lips.

She gazed back at her surroundings, the immediate sea of uniformed medics and firefighters came into view. Worry and panicked expressions were cast across their faces as they awaited the current status of their Captain.

Things seemed fine after the fire seemed to stabilize. Bobby and Lucy were on their way to rescue May and Claudette from the wellness room, Buck and Eddie were on a mission to find the missing worker and they did, successfully.

But then another set of flames roared and glass began to shatter, the roof suddenly rumbled, and the next thing they knew Lucy was yelling Mayday over the radio.

"You okay?"

Olivia turned her attention to Eddie in the waiting room chair beside her. She nodded and rested her head against his shoulder, suppressing another yawn.

"Tired. Any word on Bobby?"

"Not yet." He lulled his head to the side to meet Liv's burning gaze on the side of his face. "What? Something on my face?"

"No. Just forgot how good you looked in turnout gear."

"Is that really what you're thinking about right now?" He asked.

"It's either that or thinking about the fact that something could be seriously wrong with Bobby," Olivia bit her lip and crossed her arms. "Figured I'd go with the first thing, you know?"

Eddie chuckled softly and swung his arm around her shoulder, letting her rest more of her weight against him. They stayed like that for a while until he noticed Hen heading their way and then he nudged her so they could stand up and get a status update.

"Hey. So, uh, he's good, right?" Buck joined their side and questioned Hen.

"He had some pain in his leg on the way in," Hen said. "Might be a pinched nerve."

"But that's all, right?" Olivia knitted her brows. "Just some pain in his leg?"

"Yeah."

"Well, with all that he's been through, he's lucky that's all that it is," Eddie said.

"Yeah, I think a lot of people got lucky today."

"Coming through!" Jonah's voice echoed through the ambulance bay and their heads turned to see him straddling Claudette while he did compressions.

They didn't waste any time following after Hen who was hot on the gurney's trail. Confusion was written all over their faces while they watched the unconscious dispatcher in front of them.

"She coded in the ambulance, suffered cardiac arrest en route. No pulse."

"How long has she been down?" Hen asked.

"Twelve minutes."

"Let's call it."

"Jonah, what happened?" Hen asked. "She was fine when I left triage."

"Pressure bottomed out. Couldn't get her rhythm back. It's weird...I should've been able to save her. I usually save them."

It was late — bordering on early — when Eddie's truck rolled up in front of Olivia's home. She had been quiet the whole ride from the firehouse, he took it as her exhaustion getting the better of her.

She unbuckled the seatbelt and reached behind her for her work bag before sparing a quick glance at Eddie. "Thanks for the ride."

"Of course," he breathed out. His eyes dragged over her frame, up and down and back up again as if he was drinking her in with his eyes.

"Do you want to come in?"

The question made him inhale sharply and he rubbed his sweaty palm against his thigh. "No. I-I shouldn't." Despite the flirty banter they had been exchanging back and forth the past few days, part of him still felt so unsure about things and he hated that.

"Oh." Disappointment laced her voice and a frown spread upon her lips. "Okay. That's fine. I should get going then."

A few minutes later, there was a knock on the front door. When Olivia opened the door, the handle practically flew out of her hand and hit the wall.

Before she could register what was going on, Eddie's mouth was on hers, kissing the life out of her. She gasped and he took as his opportunity to deepen the kiss and that's when she felt his tongue slip in and nearly lick the inside of her mouth.

It was the type of sloppy and filthy kiss that had you going back for more.

"What are you doing?" She pulled back slightly, fingers tracing along the collar of his shirt.

"Tired of running away from what I want," he mumbled and dipped his head into her neck, kissing right below her ear. "I love you. I want to be with you. In every way imaginable." His hands moved south and fumbled with the button on her jeans.

He was done feeling unsure, Eddie Diaz knew what he wanted and even if was an impulsive late night — maybe early morning — decision, he didn't care. He loved Olivia and he wanted to show her.

Olivia clawed at his t-shirt and gazed up at him through her lashes. "Bedroom. Now."

He didn't waste any time before he grabbed her by the hand and dragged her into the bedroom. He used his foot to lightly kick open the door and in one swift motion, Olivia was in front and he had his hand underneath her shirt, trying to restrain himself from ripping the damn thing off. Once it was gone, he let out an appreciative groan at the sight of her.

"You're beautiful," he murmured. A smile formed on her lips and she worked on slipping out of her tight jeans and getting comfortable on the bed while Eddie drank her in.

He eyed her for a moment too long and she curled her finger around his belt loop, dragging him down to her level, and leaned in for a kiss before he begrudgingly pulled himself away and dragged his lips down, from her jawline to her neck, then stopping at her breasts as he swirled his tongue around her perky chest, his fingers followed, while she squirmed and whined at his touch.

Eddie must have read her mind, because he began to drag his lips down her stomach, occasionally sucking and biting at the soft skin there. He sat back on his heels as she bucked her hips up and he dragged her underwear down her legs. Once those were thrown somewhere across the room, Eddie's head was between her legs, nipping, and sucking at the flesh of her thighs. She whimpered at the feeling of the faint stubble on his face scratching her sensitive skin and could feel him smirk against her heat as she squirmed and tried to get closer to his face.

If that was even possible.

He let out a small laugh and the feeling of the puff of air caused her to shiver. Eddie looked up at her, his pupils blown wide, lips red, and juices covering his face. He ducked back down, licking a broad line and smirking as her hands tangled into his hair. She attempted to buck her hips up, trying to chase his tongue but he gripped her hips and pressed her down into the bed.

"Eddie...I need more!" She let out a moan, tugging on his roots. The coil in her stomach started to tighten and she was gasping for breath.

He finally pulled away, exaggerating a very loud pop noise before he kissed his way up the length of her body until he captured her lips with his. He kissed her slowly, taking his time to explore her mouth with his tongue. Olivia curled her arms around his neck and locked her legs around his waist, angling her hips upward to brush against the length bulging out from his boxers.

Eddie nipped at her pulse point, just enough to leave a mark that would last for the rest of the night but be gone by the time they would have to face the real world.

"Now. Please."

He nodded, face still buried into her neck as he managed to pull his boxers down. Propping himself up, he pulled away and smiled, grabbing his length in one hand and guiding himself to her entrance. He teased her for a bit, barely pushing the tip in because he liked seeing her squirm underneath him.

"Don't tease me," she whined, trying to get him to push into her more.

"Shh, hermosa," he soothed, his other hand coming up to stroke the side of her face. She nuzzled her cheek into his hand, turning slightly to press kisses to his palm. "I'll take care of you, don't worry. Just be patient."

Finally, he started to push into her more. He went slowly, relishing the feeling of her walls being wrapped around him again. A groan escaped both of them at the feeling. It didn't just feel good — it felt right.

When Eddie bottomed out, he dropped his forehead against hers, eyes screwed shut. He was breathing heavily, and they both knew they wouldn't last very long. Olivia was practically a blabbering mess at the feeling of her boyfriend inside of her and Eddie couldn't handle the sight of her squirming underneath him.

"Yes, Eddie, just like that," she moaned, trying to roll her hips to meet his thrusts. "Don't stop."

Eddie grunted in response. He dipped his head down to her neck, placing open-mouthed kisses all over her soft skin. One of his hands snuck down between their bodies, finding her clit with his thumb and rubbing it in small, tight circles.

Olivia let out a cry at the sensation. Then it happened. When one particularly hard thrust had him hitting her just right, she couldn't hold it back any longer. She came with a loud, broken moan, back arching as she dug her nails into his biceps.

The two of them laid there, catching their breath. Olivia played with Eddie's hair as he gently rubbed her cheek with his thumb.

"We're going to have to talk about this, you know?" She mumbled.

"I know."

"Just not right now." Olivia looked up at him with stars in her eyes and pupils blown wide, and it felt like time stopped for both of them. "I love you." She used the fingers she had in his hair to tug him back and bring their lips back together.

"I love you more."

-if there are any grammatical errors in the last chunk of this chapter it's probably because I practically typed the smut with my eyes closed😅 It's always awkward to write explicit scenes but felt a bit necessary even if the placement seems odd

-next chapter takes place in Texas and a long awaited discussion happens👀
