breaking point

Eddie twirled Olivia around, strong arms circling her waist as her hair flowed in the breeze that Los Angeles decided to provide them with for the night. She leaned back into his hold and glanced around their surroundings.

The twinkle lights, the band playing softly in the background, and all of the other couples dancing and just as hypnotized with each other as they were.

It was the rare occasion that Eddie and Olivia could take some time away from their hectic lives, get a babysitter for the night, and go on a date. He took her to a rooftop restaurant that served as the perfect date night for anyone who loved both food and dancing.

Olivia smoothed her hand across his chest and glanced up at him, her brown eyes twinkling as she did so. "Did I ever tell you how handsome you looked tonight?"

"Mmm, a couple of times."

"Well, there's nothing wrong with one more time. You look very handsome."

Eddie dipped her backward causing a shriek to escape her mouth before tightly wrapping her into his arms. "You look beautiful. So beautiful."

"Thank you, baby." Olivia reached up to steal a kiss from her boyfriend. "So, as fun as this has been, what do you say we ditch this place and get dessert?"

"Is dessert code for—"

"Yes, it is. Hurry before my offer expires."

"Okay!"

Forty-five minutes later, Olivia was watching Eddie drive his truck off as she waved with a dreamy look still cast across her face. She sighed and adjusted the hemline of her skirt before turning around to unlock the front door.

Justin and Elisa were on the couch with a bowl of popcorn in between them, the latter had her eyebrow raised once she watched her sister stumble through the door.

"Someone had fun," Elisa snorted.

"Too much fun," Justin added.

"Yeah. Let's go with that," Olivia rolled her eyes. "How was your guys' night? Was my kid an angel?"

Elisa and Justin shared a wide-eyed look before staring ahead at the adult.

"What's with the look?"

"He was being a little difficult," Elisa admitted. "He wouldn't go to bed when we told him it was time, he didn't touch his dinner, and he refused to turn off his video game. I'm pretty sure he's still up and playing the game."

"Got it." Olivia kicked off her heels and returned to her normal height before deciding to walk down the hallway and enter her son's room. Elisa ended up being right, he was wide awake and playing a game on his PlayStation. "Isn't it past your bedtime, mister?"

"I don't know."

"No, I think you do." Olivia sunk on the edge of his bed and motioned for him to shut off his video games. She could sense some resistance but with one glance at her face, he reluctantly turned off the gaming system with a huff. "I heard you were giving your Aunt some trouble earlier."

"That's not true."

"Lying will only make it worse, munchkin."

"Are you and Eddie going to get married?" He blurted out.

Olivia blinked in surprise at his outburst, the thought of marriage never crossed her mind. "Where's this coming from?"

"I see you for two weeks out of the month then I stay with Dad. If you and Eddie get married then you'll live with him and Christopher and you'll be with them all of the time. What if you forget about me? Or stop loving me?"

"Hey, you know it doesn't matter if I marry Eddie or if we end up having kids. You'll always be my firstborn. Do you know what that means?" He shook his head no. "It means that we have a bond no one else does. I love you so much. Nothing in this world could ever change that."

"Promise?"

"Promise." Olivia pulled her son into her arms and attacked his face with kisses. "Now, go to bed. It is way past your bedtime."

"How was I supposed to know this was a cul-de-sac? I didn't see a sign!"

The 118 leaned against the fire engine and stared up at the culprit, clearly, in distress as he waved a firearm in the air. There was a hostage negotiator on the scene, trying to get him to come down without the use of force or anything else so the news van, police officers, and all of the other necessary first responders jobs were to stay there and wait.

"Shut up! I need to think!"

"Eh, should've tried thinking before he ended up on a roof," Eddie judged as he peered up at the roof. "I mean, he cornered himself."

"That there is a whole series of bad life choices culminating in this one unfortunate moment," Hen said. "It'd be tragic if it wasn't so moronic."

"Why don't they just storm the roof?" Chimney pondered. "It's not that high. We can give 'em a ladder."

"It's a tactic negotiators use to drag out the process in order to wear down the suspect," Bobby explained. "Eventually, they will hit a breaking point."

"Or we do," Olivia snorted.

"Ten bucks says he falls right off that roof," Hen eyed the pacing man.

"Twenty says he makes a leap for the tree," Eddie stuck out some cash. "C'mon, the guy's got at least one more bad life choice left in him."

Chimney and Eddie held out some cash which Hen happily grabbed from the two men.

"You guys are terrible," Olivia commented.

"Don't act like you weren't thinking the exact same thing," Hen muttered.

Time ticked by slowly but surely. Everyone had scattered around and began to do their own thing since it was clear they would be there for a while.

They were about five hours in when Olivia decided to camp out in the back of the ambulance, she was lying down on the gurney when Eddie walked in with a slice of pizza.

"It's cold but I saved you a slice."

"You treat me so well," Olivia sat up and snatched the plate from his hand. "Thank you, babe."

"Do you have any plans later on?"

"Yeah, believe it or not, I do."

"I'm sorry?" Eddie quirked his eyebrow. "Who do you have plans with?"

"My children. Look, I didn't want to bring this up now but Kai was upset the night I came back from our date, and I think I need to spend a little bit more time with him."

"What'd he say?"

"He was just worried that the more our relationship progresses, the less time I would have to spend with him."

"Liv, why didn't you tell me about this?"

"I guess I needed to process it myself," she admitted. "And to think about things."

"Things?" Eddie grew worried. "Like our relationship?"

"No. No. Nothing like that," Olivia reassured as she set aside the plate in her hand and grabbed his hand. "I have never felt more sure about anything in my life. But Kai only knows the Mom that is always around, I've never been in such a serious relationship before so I need to make sure he understands that I can still have a romantic life while also being a good Mom."

"I get that." Eddie nodded and glanced around at their surroundings, everyone was occupied with their conversations or too busy staring at the man on the roof so he decided to plant a kiss on her cheek.

"Eddie! We're at work."

When the sixth hour came around, the team was back to their original spots by the fire engine, except for Buck who remained by Taylor Kelly's side. They all sat impatiently, mumbling under their breath about how they wished the man on the roof would just jump.

He was going off on a tangent when the homeowner decided to climb on top of the roof and simply push him off in order to solve everyone's problem.

"Bet no one was expecting that."

Olivia opened the door to find Elisa sprawled out on the couch with her laptop on her stomach and the television playing at a low volume. She furrowed her eyebrows and closed the door behind her as she fully entered the home.

"Why are you sitting like that?"

"Been sitting on this couch for like five hours. Got to find a way to get comfortable." She shut her laptop and sat up against the back of the couch. "Your baby daddy just dropped off your demon child. He's in his room finishing up his homework. Or playing video games. My money's on the second one."

"If you think this is bad, just wait until he hits puberty. You kids are not perfect little angels." Olivia wagged her finger at the teenager with a reprimanding stare before disappearing down the hallway and entering her son's room. "Hi, munchkin."

"Hi, Mom." Kai was sitting at his desk, scribbling away at whatever homework his third-grade teacher assigned to him. "I was nice to Auntie Elisa today."

"I would hope so. You're her favorite nephew, after all."

"I'm her only nephew."

"How's that homework coming along?" Olivia ruffled her hand through his curls with a soft grin.

"I'm almost done. I did most of it at Dad's."

"Okay. When you're finished, why don't you come out to the living room and we can play some games? What do you think about that?"

"Just us?" A wide grin spread across his lips. "Me, you, and Auntie Elisa?"

"Just us."

"Okay, don't fall asleep, Mom! I'm almost done."
