Part 18

I fly from the village and return to an old abandoned chapel... the chapel my father helped restore. I hold Ina's body in my arm... it's cold... I look down at the blade I hold... it's wreathed in blood and my arm has absorbed a great amount of blood and souls. I gently stroke her head with a single finger. "My poor Ina... you only died because of me... had I not went to check on you all... you would've been safe... I should have put more faith in Taylor and Lucillia to protect you" I said. Suddenly I hear footsteps behind me. I quickly turn and point my blade... to my surprise... it's Horace. "Hello again, I was wondering where you ran off to" He said. My cold gaze was meat with a sinister smile... but a welcome face at least. "I learned something about the parasite that inhabits my body..." He said. I tilt my head in confusion. "Apparently Osiris is no normal creature, it's an Eldritch being, Osiris the formless" Horace said. I get into a readied stance then after he says this. "Don't worry, I'm not here to cause trouble... but I take it you're trying to resurrect your daughter right?" He asked. I just gave him a silent stare. "What you're going to try and do is ancient magic... you're going to change what she is entirely... not to mention the trial you'll face if you follow through with this" Horace said. He then pulls out a book and Osiris takes form over a half of his face. "You would kill a god to bring back a child, to do so you must find someone who has the title of such... and someone who also holds a close title to it as well" Osiris says. I turn to face the sky and look back down to Ina. "What of the demon god then... will him and Lucifer suffice?" I asked. Osiris' grin twists and contorts. "Indeed, and if I recall... he was rather presumptuous of your being" Osiris said. Then Osiris gives back control to Horace. "I hope you know what you're doing, for now... you'll be on your own... also... I look forward to your success" He then walks away. I return to Ettenburrow and Lizzy, Lilith and Cristen run up to me... but their smiles... are cut short... "Gavan... is that... Ina?" Lilith asks. Lizzy falls to her knees and wraps her arms around herself. "No... no no no no! What happened to our sweet little angel! TELL ME SHE' OKAY!?" Lizzy cried. I grit my teeth as Cristen walks up and she starts to cry. She reaches out and gently touches Ina's face. "This is why humans should not be trusted... Joseph was a traitor from the start..." Cristen said. "I'm going to offer the blood of a half god and a god to the slumbering one... dead or alive doesn't matter" I said. They fell silent at this moment. "The Slumbering One... the being capable of changing thoughts and wishes into reality... for a price however..." Lilith said. Suddenly a fiery portal opens and out steps Lucifer. I silent look to him then back at Lilith and Cristen. They nod and grab him. "What's the meaning of this! Unhand me at once!" He said. He looks to me and freezes. "Lucifer... you shall be a blood sacrifice to bring back my daughter... and Lilith will once again reign over the demon race..." I said. I walk up to him as he struggles to break free and... STAB! I stab him in the gut and the sword goes through him. Blood drips from the blade as it absorbs into the sword. I rip the blade from his chest as his body falls to the ground. I then feel my body twist and contort. I drop Ina and stumble backwards in pain. "AAAAAH!" I scream as the pain becomes greater. "He's acquired ample offerings..." Horace said. Horace walks out into the clearing and holds his hands together. "He'll now evolve into a Eldritch being... he'll retain his state of mind and being... but his body will undergo a serious change to ensure he can withstand seeing the slumbering one" Horace said. My vision turns blurry, my hearing grows more sensitive, my skins turns to a solid black and grayish smooth texture, large silk like wings form on my back that drape downward, I hunch over lunch a wolf, my head changes shape and my whole body grows in size. This grueling pain eventually stops... but I feel... different... "Gavan... is that you?" Lizzy said. I frantically look for a mirror or glass nearby to look at myself... when I find something... but see a smooth black texture where I once had skin... my clothing completely replaced by hide like plating, I'm walking on all fours but I still have legs and arms instead of all legs, my hands are now just four fingers instead of five. My head is devoid of hair, my skull is plated and my eyes are now four eyes of just little slits. I just stare at my reflection in silence for a moment... was I really now just another Eldritch horror. "Gavan... I think you'll need this for the Slumbering one" said a voice. A arm is thrown to me... it's the arm of Joseph, infected by the part of Rehr. Lance stands slightly injured and cloaked. "I must take my leave... I've done what I needed to... farewell friend, may we meet again someday" Lance said. He then vanishes into the air. I pick up the arm and walk back over to Ina. I gently lift her up and cradle her against my chest. "I'll return... wait for me" I then unfurled my wings in a bright luminous display of blue and green and fly off into the mountains. That's where I will find the slumbering one... I don't know how... but I will. When I arrive I land and survey the area. It's a bleak barren landscape with tall jagged rocks and trees. "Na Ter Ur Sa" I said. I wish to speak... how did I just say that in a language I never knew. The ground shakes as a colossal featureless figure comes into view. "Speak" it said. I realize what I'm seeing is a eldritch god... but my transformation has prevented me from going insane. "Please bring back my daughter" I asked. I gently lay her down and back away. I then present the arm. The arm vanishes and the figure begins to leave. Ina's skin tone comes back as she begins to breathe. "Ina!" I said. I quickly hold her in my arms and fly back to Ettenburrow. When I arrive she still is asleep but a few hours later she wakes up. She looks around for me and noticed the giant creature watching over her that is me. "Papa?" She asks. I reach out my hand to her. Then Lizzy walks up to me. "Gavan... by the way... I've been meaning to tell you... I'm pregnant" She said. I fall silent for a moment. Ina looks up at her with joy. "But papa said you could get pregnant!?" Ina said. I lumber over towards Lizzy and press my head against her stomach. "It was supposed to be a surprise, but yes, it's early but we'll eventually have a proper family" Lizzy said. I look down at the ground in disgust. "Not really... I'm a Eldritch horror now... incapable of being a father" I said. Thats when Axothul comes in carrying what looks to be an arm and Lance floating alongside him. They toss the arm to me and look at me. "You're not out of the clear yet, now that you're an eldritch being... you're the only one capable of ensuring that Rehr is kept in his place" Axothul said. "You'll have to go to that rift up in the sky with that arm and travel directly to Rehr, once you're there... you'll shatter the connection between his world and ours, preventing him from coming back again until someone is foolish enough to attempt this again" Lance said. "What happens when the rift closes, what about Gavan?" Lizzy asks. "He'll be locked in the realm for Eldritch horrors, with no way out unless brought forward through a ritual of sacrifice... he has gained godlike status... unfortunately he requires a sacrifice of many... and I take it he has a score to settle with the cause of this nightmare" Axothul said. "That's not fair! Why don't you do it yourself!?" Lilith shouts. I grab the arm though and look at everyone. "Axothul... thank you... look after them... and Sihlus..." I said. Soul is manifests and kneels. "Protect them in my stead, as you always have in my absence, my loyal servant" I said. Sihlus places both his fists on the ground and bows his head. Then one final time I take to the air... speeding towards the rift still open in the sky. Cristen falls to her knees crying my name... heartbroken... this pains me... hurts me that I have to leave her alone... but I will end this nightmare... permanently. CRACK!! I enter the rift and I shoot out on the other side. A world distorted and fractured then upon a mound stands a shadowy figure twitching... "You must be Rehr" I say. It looks back at me with its many eyes and deformed faces. "You! I see you have a fragment of me, have you come to offer it to me?" Rehr asks. "No, I have come to end your plague upon life" I crush the arm in my grasp and tear it to shreds! "No! You fool! The rift will shut! I will perish and you will forever walk this plateau of eldritch darkness!" Rehr yells. "Good" I noticed the other parts of his body lying upon an alter and I begin to smash them and rip them up. The rift begins making awful cracking sounds and throwing sparks everywhere! "NO! You fool!" Rehr screams! As he goes to lunge at me his body dissipates into nothing and the rift seals behind me. I watch as it shuts and smile. Thus ends the nightmare... no more great ones... no more eldritch horrors... peace for the normal world at last. Meanwhile... Lizzy and the others look up at the sky and watch the rift shut and cry. "Gavan!" The girls are heartbroken... Ina... then walks over to Lizzy, Cristen and Lizzy and hugs each of them. "He saved us, he's a hero" She said. The girls stop crying and look at Ina. "I'm glad to call him my dad! You showed those nasty monsters who's boss!" Ina shouts to the sky. She smiles and tears stream down her face. "We'll miss you, I love you dad" Ina said. She keeps a strong face and wipes away her tears. Sihlus walks over to Ina and kneels. "I can see you being a lot like your father... remaining strong no matter what" Sihlus said. So the following months the chapel was rebuilt but not in a regular way of religious tradition... they built it for me and a shrine to commune with me... they place offerings at the shrine... the day prayers... eventually they started holding citywide ceremonies where they would dress up and wear masks donning a symbol of the moon with a sword through it... they eventually named me Nas, God of the Moonlight... I would watch them from the Eldritch realm... relishing in their worship... but... the most important moment was several months later... when I was awoken by the sounds of a crying child at the alter... I looked down through a one way viewing rift and in Lizzy's arms... at the shrine one day... was a baby boy... "He's rather fussy today isn't he?" Cristen said. "Here you wanna hold him for a little bit and go speak with Gavan?" Lizzy said. Cristen takes the baby boy in her arms and walks up to the shrine. "I know you can only see and hear us... but we decided to name him Solus... we hope that name isn't too much" Cristen said. I smile and watch as the baby just yawns and is gently lulled in Cristen's arms. But as they say... a good story ends the same way it started... in this case... it started with the worship and attempted resurrection of a eldritch god... now it ends with the rise of a new god and the worship of a new one. The years will continue... but the next generation will be safe from Rehr's influence... until the next threat comes... I shall watch over them... until I perish... into the Eternal Black.
