; tori kelly "unbreakable smile" album review
Okay, so I've been big into Tori Kelly for a while. I was a fan of "Nobody Love", but what hooked me was (her hair) her live performance of it at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards. It was actually insane. Her vocal abilities are astounding and unbelievably impressive, and I can't believe she hasn't gotten the amount of attention and praise she deserves yet. Hopefully with Unbreakable Smile, that's exactly what she'll finally get.
When I bought the album, I was essentially risking hating every track on it but the two singles currently getting radio play, "Nobody Love" and "Should've Been Us". Honestly, how was I to know that I'd enjoy the rest of it? But I do this a lot with music, and I generally have a pretty accurate hunch. Thankfully, that accurate hunch led me to another successful purchase.
Here is what I thought of each track:
01: WHERE I BELONG - 9/10
Obviously an album opener, "Where I Belong" comes off as super personal, in my opinion. The music/tune is bittersweet, abandoning some of the sweeter sounds typically associated with songs like this and adopting a rougher, edgier feel. I think it serves the album well once you hear the entire thing, because Tori does this often with several tracks that could have gone one way but ended up going the other. It's kind of hard to explain, but you'll understand once you give the album a listen. Very heartfelt, very deep. Favorite lyrics: "You know I forget to breathe sometimes / and I'm so afraid to fall behind"
02: UNBREAKABLE SMILE - 9.5/10
The title track. This song made me realize that Tori Kelly is, in a way, the female Ed Sheeran with maybe a bit more production behind her. Where Ed relies mostly on the raw acoustic guitars and pianos, Tori seems much more comfortable with a band backing her up. But both artists are fantastic lyricists and are great with playing around with rapping. "Unbreakable Smile" puts Tori in a place where she appears to be very confident in herself and comfortable, which is pretty inspiring for her career just beginning to kick off. It makes me curious to know how that'll end up serving her in the future. Either way, I love this song. I don't know if you could call any of these tracks "bangers", because it's really not that type of music, but I can't think of any better word right now so I'm going to go ahead and call this one a banger. Favorite lyrics: "And baby who knows maybe I can sell out shows without taking off my clothes / God made me sexy I don't care if only I know it"
03: NOBODY LOVE - 10/10
To be honest, I have this weird thing where I feel like any album's leading single is hardly ever one of its better tracks, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this album. I am all for this song. The bridge is my everything, the verses are my everything, and the chorus is dramatic and quiets the hype, and I'm just still so here for this song. But even better than "Nobody Love" is "Nobody Love" sung live. Jesus save me, Tori Kelly has a voice that I could only dream of having. When she hits that high note I honestly want to just start crying. Yeah. Fun story with this song: back at school, me and my roommate (Maria) were sitting in the basement of our dorm hall with a guy named Moe and it was after midnight, and we were pretty much just talking about nothing when these two guys came in and were like "Okay we have this song stuck in our heads but we can't think of what it's called or who sings it, and we don't know any of the words but it sounds like this." They proceeded to attempt to hum the bridge, and honestly I'd never heard the song before at this point, so I had zero clue, but we were all on our phones on, like, Billboard Top 40 charts and stuff listing songs off, and finally Moe looked this one up and it was it. So yeah, that's how I got into it. Favorite lyrics: "I should be more cynical and tell myself it's not okay / to feel this good when I'm with you"
04: EXPENSIVE (FEAT. DAYE JACK) - 10/10
This song has a fun feel to it, and I'm really digging the bridge here again. I'm kind of getting a huge Little Mix vibe, actually. Like, I can one hundred percent hear Perrie Edward's vocals in my head. Except that, of course, obviously it's Tori Kelly. Thankfully Daye Jack's verse isn't obnoxious and is actually a decent addition to the song as a whole. I definitely think the strongest part of this song is the bridge, but the entire thing is in Tori's upper register which is always pleasant to the ear, so it winds up being a really great listen. You'll find yourself being a lot more into it than you thought you'd be. Favorite lyrics: "The fact is baby / we've all been taught to chase that dollar / but that's not on my mind"
05: SHOULD'VE BEEN US - 10/10
I adored this song the first time I heard it. The local Top 40 radio station here, actually, has this segment called "Yah er No" where they play a new single from an artist and have listeners text or call in saying/voting either Yah or No. Usually, Yah er No singles never do very well (mostly because the DJs suck at picking good singles) but this one slayed. It's relatable, the echoing makes it a super easy listen, and the chorus carries the entire song straight across the finish line. It could definitely compete with "Nobody Love" as the best single on the album. Favorite lyrics: "I still got a little flame for you / even though you drove me mad"
06: FIRST HEARTBREAK - 9/10
This is another relatable track and the first slow song on the album. I don't know that I'd call it a ballad, but it's obviously not as fast-paced as the first five tracks. Beginning with a simple acoustic guitar allows you to really hear the lyrics in the first verse, which sets the scene for the rest of the song, which is essentially about fearing she's fallen too hard for someone because she's suddenly afraid they'll leave her. I get a lot of Demi Lovato vibes from this song, which is fine because whether you like Demi or not, you can't deny her voice is crazy and most of her songs are killer. The music in "First Heartbreak" begins to pick up during/after the first chorus, as do alterations in the tune of the verse with some of Tori's signature runs. Favorite lyrics: "You never hear me singing love songs / Wasn't big on poetry / Never cried in the movies / Didn't wanna feel so weak"
07: I WAS MADE FOR LOVING YOU (FEAT. ED SHEERAN) - 10/10
You know that as soon as Ed Sheeran's name is included in a track title that it's going to be a winner no matter who else is singing with him, and this one was no exception. Tori's voice becomes soft and summery, and the fluttering guitar really makes you feel like you're sitting in the middle of a field of daisies with Mr. Sheeran wearing a flower crown and swaying along with the breeze to this song. It's gentle and cute, and the lyrics are honest. These two should collaborate more often because I don't know that I've ever heard anything sweeter. Favorite lyrics: "Please don't scar this young heart / Just take my hand"
08: CITY DOVE - 10/10
Ah, finally my favorite song on the whole album. It's like, I can't even relate with this song yet but what makes it so wonderful to me is that I want to relate to it so badly. I can't wait until I'm somewhere I want to be waiting for something exciting and special to happen. "City Dove" is all about being a very small thing in a very large city, waiting for something to come. As you could probably guess from the title, it compares you to a dove, which is poetic and I appreciate that. But I guess, the more I listen to it, the more I feel like maybe I do already relate to it in every way that I can until I finally do live in a city. I really don't know what's going on either. Regardless, you hear this song once and you think it's a piece of art that you didn't fully take in the first time around, and so you will listen to it a second time (I promise). And you'll listen to the chorus and raise your eyebrows and nod, impressed. Then you'll hear the end of the chorus when she goes into falsetto and you'll close your eyes and be like @ God: thanks. Favorite lyrics: "City dove / fly between the stars and the headlights / passin' by the clouds and the street signs / knowing that there's something to come / just holding on"
09: TALK - 8.5/10
This track begins in a much more interesting way than any of the others: Tori is singing in a very high falsetto and very clipped. Honestly, I feel like that sort of distracts from the meaning of the song, because until I looked up the lyrics I couldn't figure it out myself. But now that I know, obviously I feel much better about it than I did before. "Talk" isn't as easy of a listen as the rest of the album, but actually after a couple listens you won't feel the need to skip it. The chorus is catchy enough, even if it is pretty short, and the verses are easy to learn (again, once you know the words). Favorite lyrics: "People run, people walk / but they don't ever see past the world that they're in"
10: FUNNY (LIVE) - 9/10
This track is indicated as being performed live, but really this is probably what the entire album would sound like if she really was the female Ed Sheeran, so if you're really into his music you'll probably like this a lot. What I enjoy is how brutally honest it is, and in a way I wonder if Tori really feels this way. It took Taylor Swift four albums before she finally wrote "The Lucky One", and here Tori is with a similar song on one of her first big releases. That's almost terrifying, if you think about it. But anyway, the vocals in this track are incredible, especially toward the end when it becomes more intense and emotional. Some people will find this to be a lot less impressive than I find it, and that's fine. Favorite lyrics: "Everything you ever wanted got you tied up in chains / Be careful how you play the game"
11: ART OF LETTING YOU GO - 10/10
This is another song that I ended up liking after first listen. It could probably be because the entire first verse and chorus are literally story of my life, but it's fine. I'm over it. (Coughs awkwardly.) Yeah, but anyway, it's clearly relatable and not just for me; there will be many of you who are like "Lol. Me." The title at first seems like it's going to be pretentious, because that's what I thought it was going to be, but once you hear her sing it you'll think otherwise. It's very tactfully done, just like the rest of the track. I love everything about it. Favorite lyrics: "You got a girlfriend and stuff / Feelings are bottled up / hide 'em in this song, took the key and locked it up"
12: CALIFORNIA LOVERS (FEAT. LL COOL J) - 9.5/10
I could one hundred percent see this song becoming a single at some point, if there are going to be more than two, and I'd one hundred percent be okay with it. It's a chill summer song, and I like it. Honestly, it's nothing that hasn't been done before, but at the same time Tori puts her own twist on it. Do you know you get a strong feel for an author's personality by reading their books? Like, they just have this sound and tone and even if their book was signed Anonymous you'd know it was them because their voice is just so definitive? Tori has that kind of songwriting style, and there's something about the way she words things that makes me feel like she's essentially stamped her name all over her songs. This one is no exception. It's a Tori Kelly song. What are you gonna do? Favorite lyrics: "You're never on my mind / till I feel the heat of you and me / It hits me every summer"
13: FALLING SLOW - 9/10
The beginning of this song is so reminiscent of something, but I cannot put my finger on it (EDIT: I figured it out: "Mad" by Ne-Yo). Either way, a huge asset to this song is the background vocals, surprisingly enough. They're a brilliantly added touch and give the song texture. I also really like how the lyrics seem like they go "I'm always falling so in love" when in reality they're "I'm always falling slow in love", which is tactfully done. There's a nice violin feature before the final chorus, which can be faintly heard again right before the song ends. I think Tori should utilize a violin more often in some of her tracks. I can see some magic happening with that. Favorite lyrics: "What if I messed up? / Would you give up on us? / Would you tear the page out like it never happened?"
14: ANYWAY - 9.5/10
If you purchase the regular album, this would be the album closer. It's sort of like a cousin to "Unbreakable Smile", not necessarily being about the exact same things, but it showcases Tori's confidence and comfort with herself again. And even though she name-drops herself in both of these tracks, this one more prominently, it doesn't make it any less relatable. The repetitive "any-anyway" lyric is super fun and makes the song stick out after listening to thirteen other Tori Kelly songs, and honestly I think the song sticks out as a whole anyway. It isn't as over-produced as "Nobody Love", "Should've Been Us", "California Lovers" or "Expensive", but it fits in with them, if you ask me. You want to listen to it more than once. It's just that kind of song. It also contains some more of that Ed Sheeran-esque rapping, which is fun. And the ending is killer. Favorite lyrics: "I do my own thing and that's all right / It's the way I choose to live my life / Whether you leave or stay / this is me any-anyway"
15: DEAR NO ONE (BONUS TRACK) - 10/10
The first time I listened to this song I was so frustrated because I swore I had heard a lot of her exact lyrics before, and I couldn't figure out where. It turned out that I've actually heard this song before on one of Tori's self-released albums. This won't be a 10 in everyone's book, but I love it. Again, I relate to it; I'm impressed that she wrote it herself and released it on an album herself; I think the concept is cute. Done before, but cute, and I like the way she did it. The second verse really stands out to me, and I can't explain why, but those were definitely the lyrics that drove me mad. I remembered them the most. I just...yeah. It's a personal love that you guys might not be as impressed with, but give it a shot. Favorite lyrics: "I'd love to have a soulmate / and God'll give him to me someday / and I know it'll be worth the wait"
16: BEAUTIFUL THINGS (BONUS TRACK) - 9.5/10
This is another prime example of Tori ditching the sweeter sounds for flats and sharps. Again, it works really well in her favor, and this is probably a perfect bonus track. Actually, it would have made the album sparkle. If she traded this one for "Talk" and made that one a bonus track instead, "Unbreakable Smile" (the album) would be perfect. The chorus is haunting and pretty and gentle, but you can feel an inevitable sadness there, and I think a song is a success when you can actually feel things like that. The lyrics I'm about to list as my favorites actually hurt my heart. As far as slow songs go on this album, this one wins for me. I'm so glad she kept it acoustic. Favorite lyrics: "If you go / I think I'd understand / It's not that easy holding my hand"
Yeah, so I love everything about this album. I do not regret spending $6.99 on it. I knew it was going to be as good as I imagined it'd be, if not better. Have you given the album a listen? What songs are your favorite? And have you seen Tori's performance of "Nobody Love" at the Billboard Music Awards? If not, I'll attach the video of it, so make sure you check it out and be amazed. Ed Sheeran tweeted about it afterward and was literally in awe, so you probably will be too.
As a whole, I give the album a 10/10 rating. I'm just super impressed by this whole thing. I love it. AND SOMEBODY GET ME HER HAIR.
