; summer 2017 mixtape
Hello, I am drinking a root beer right now and enjoying the end of my weekend. How are you all?
So, I wanted to post this a lot sooner, but I was waiting for the release of a certain single by my parents Louis and BeBe – now that it's finally here, it's time to share with you what I've been listening to this summer. It's obviously by no means everything, but it's a little bit of everything. Lots of good music this year so far. I'm impressed.
Let's get started, shall we?
01: BACK TO YOU by Louis Tomlinson feat. Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals
GUYS WHAT THE FDIHLSIASLHIGLD. It's like...I was expecting this to be amazing, but I was honestly blown away. From the lyrics to the melody to Louis' falsetto I just...I wasn't ready. I've loved Bebe since I learned who she was and how hard she's worked, and I think she was an amazing person for Louis to have feature on his first proper solo track under his own name. The meaning of the song (if you read it the way I do) applies to them both then, and that's fantastic. And after "Digital Love," we all know DFA can drop some wicked tunes. Amazing choice having them as well. God, I just love everything about it.
02: SWEAT by The All-American Rejects
When I saw this one under Spotify's newly released music, I kind of listened to it not expecting to necessarily love it as much as I just wanted to see what kind of music AAR was making these days. But the second the chorus hit it was like, hold the phone this is fantastic??? Seriously, such a bop. I listened to nothing else for the rest of the week. And the whispering? Sign me up for more of this.
03: BAD AT LOVE by Halsey
You've all already read my reactions/thoughts to her entire new album, hopeless fountain kingdom, so I won't go into too much detail but there was no way I wasn't going to include this one. It's the kind of song that gets better the more you listen to it; there needs to be more music like this in the world. I love her voice in the verses and the chorus makes me hope it'll become a radio single – imagine getting to hear it every time you turn on your top 40 radio station? Please.
04: SLOW HANDS by Niall Horan
I haven't actually gotten the chance to include this absolute JAM in any of my mixtapes yet, so here we go. It deserves a spot because again, just keeps getting better. The guitar, the lyrics (even though dirty laundry isn't sexy Neil, it's just not), the choppy music. I hope the rest of his album sounds a lot like this because I'm still impressed. Legend.
05: THE WAY I ARE (DANCE WITH SOMEBODY) by Bebe Rexha feat. Lil' Wayne
Like I said, big fan of Bebe. I can't wait for the second half of her LP, but until then I will enjoy the heck out of this song whenever it comes on the radio. What I love the most about her voice is that she can sound super aggressive and strong and then turn around with a cutesy, vampy school-girl voice and she does that in this song. She's so versatile and so cute and so appreciative of everything since she's worked so hard to be recognized for all her contributions to the music scene, and just...I love her. QUEEN.
06: WHY by Sabrina Carpenter
This one threw me for a loop at first, I'll be honest. I wanted to love it because I adore Sabrina so much, but when I first heard it I wasn't as impressed as I wanted to be. The verses stood out, but the chorus wasn't anything special to me. To be fair, I'm not a huge fan of the genre she's beginning to lean toward. Still, I wanted to love it, so I listened to it as often as I could, and I actually do love it now. The verses are still my favorite parts, and her voice is consistently adorable, so that helps a lot.
07: STRIP THAT DOWN by Liam Payne feat. Quavo
Guys, I'm embarrassed to have this song on my list, to be honest. I'm not a huge fan of it, so don't get me wrong, but also it's so catchy. I blame Ed Sheeran for the stupid background vocals bit that he did, because that's the part that got stuck in my head first, and then it was just all downhill from there. Sigh.
08: STAY TOGETHER by Noah Cyrus
Believe me, I never thought the day would come that I'd have a song by Noah Cyrus on any of my mixtapes, but here we are. I wasn't that into her first single, whatever it was called, with Labrinth, but I'm actually very into this one. The lyrics aren't anything crazy amazing, but I only had to hear the chorus once to be nodding along. It's got a nice tune and she doesn't sound all that bad, so before you judge her too harshly based on her name, give one of her three available songs a listen and decide for yourself then.
09: LIABILITY by Lorde
Okay, this one CAME FOR ME. I've never felt so attacked by a song in my entire life, and that's saying a lot considering I'm a One Direction fan. But seriously, have any lyrics ever been more relatable? No. No they have not. And the first verse? Amazing. Also painful, but amazing. If I had to recommend one song from her new, incredible album, it would be this one. I'm still in awe.
10: BAD LIAR by Selena Gomez
Say what you want about Selena, this was a tune. It's so different, in my opinion, to everything else she's ever put out and it was so refreshing. Remember her one single "Come and Get It"? Yeah, that was a dark time. Rest assured this single is a hundred times better and the music video is wonderful. If you've ever seen Halsey's "Colors" video, then you'll have an idea of what I mean by wonderful. Anyway, I just really like this and I'm looking forward to the rest of her album, whenever it comes out.
11: PRAYING by Kesha
I have not seen goosebumps on me the way I saw them the day I heard this song for the first time, unexpectedly. I was sitting in a truck waiting for my mom at a gas station, and this came on the radio so I turned it up because I wasn't even aware Kesha was releasing new music, and I was blown away. By the time she said that "some things, only God can forgive," and then dropped a high note unlike any I've heard in ages, I was done for. Also I almost cried, but yeah. This is amazing.
12: 100 LETTERS by Halsey
Once again, another you've already read my opinion on. This is still my favorite track from her new album, so it was obviously going to find a place on this mixtape. It's the most relatable one for me, and I just really love it.
13: WOMAN by Harry Styles
I can't believe "Sign of the Times" is still the only solo Harry song I've been able to put on a mixtape so far. Anyway, how funny is it that when I reviewed his album this was my least favorite song, but now here we are? I love this song. I don't know how I went from being like what is this to WHERE HAS THIS BEEN MY WHOLE LIFE, but it's happened and I'm okay with it. Also, rest in peace Robin; I hope you're enjoying the duck noises up there.
14: WRITER IN THE DARK by Lorde
This is my second favorite song on Lorde's album. I think what I love is that it kind of does what Taylor Swift did with "Blank Space," exaggerating the media's perception of what happens when women write songs about their past/failed relationships or ex flings. At least that's the way I'm understanding it. Either way, the second I heard the word "rue" being used as an actual lyric I knew I would love this song.
15: HATE THAT YOU KNOW ME by Bleachers
If you guys still aren't listening to Bleachers, then what are you doing with your lives? The amount of talent Jack Antonoff possesses astounds me sometimes. Their new album is seriously so good; of them all, this is the most radio-friendly and boppy. If you're going to get into them from any new song, it'll be this one, but just know that their previous album is amazing as well and if you haven't heard "Rollercoaster" or "I Wanna Get Better" yet, you're honestly living your life incorrectly.
16: THE CURE by Lady GaGa
Why do I love this one? I don't really know. I'm not the world's biggest fan of Lady GaGa's new album, but this one I do actually enjoy. The lyrics feel cheesy to me, but the tune is catchy and I've always loved her voice, so it's just a nice, solid pop song that I like hearing on the radio and occasionally when it comes up in my playlist.
17: F.F.F. by Bebe Rexha feat. G-Eazy
I can't believe I haven't included this song anywhere before? Okay, well if you're looking for Bebe's best song to date (obviously not counting "Back to You"), look no further. "F.F.F." stands for "F*ck Fake Friends," and if that ain't the truth. My favorite part is the bridge, because the entire song is a bop but the bridge is like, that level of bop times five. Seriously, everything about this. It's all good.
18: TWO GHOSTS by Harry Styles
I had to include our boy's second single. You know I had to.
19: WANT YOU BACK by Haim
Remember how I said there's been a lot of great music being released this year? Yeah, enter in Haim. Their first single from their new album is a really great introduction to what the rest of their album sounds like, and if that's not enough to listen to the whole thing then I don't know what is. I've always loved how perfectly their voices blend together, and nothing has changed.
20: DEVIL IN ME by Halsey
This is my second favorite track from Halsey's album, and once again it's due to relatability. I feel like that must be something that's really important to me, being able to relate to a song, because those are the ones that generally tend to stick with me. I also love that Sia collaborated with Halsey on the song's tune; you can totally tell, and it's the Sia touch that gives the track a little extra magic in my opinion. You feel the emotion and desperation from that, and I'm not saying Halsey wouldn't have been able to accomplish that on her own, but Sia's always been able to make you feel that way, you know? "Chandelier" still gives me chills.
There you have it. How many of those tracks are you guys listening to? What else have you been bopping along to this summer?
Please keep in mind that I didn't include anything from the Anastasia musical because I'm listening to that entire soundtrack and I couldn't choose just one or two – plus, I had loads of other stuff I wanted to include, so my twenty-track limit was a little...limiting. Restricting. Whatever.
Thanks for reading! x
