; spring 2016 mix tape
It's that time of year again where I avoid my responsibilities due to overwhelming amounts of stress and share with you the music I've been listening to recently so that I can pretend I'm doing you all a favor but really it is you all who will be doing me the favor.
You might remember when I shared with you my winter mixtapes, and guess what! It's a new season! It's spring now! So that means I've got a new mixtape for you. There might be another one at the end of the season depending on how much more music I discover between now and then, but for now there's just the one. And I think it's pretty solid.
I'm just going to get right into it. Here are most of the songs I've been enjoying the last few months and why.
SPRING 2016, VOL. 1
01: Do You Wanna Get High? by Weezer
So, as some of you may know, I managed to score tickets to see the ever talented Panic! At The Disco this summer in Milwaukee. When I found out that they're touring with Weezer, my first instinct was – naturally – to look up their most recent music as the only songs I've heard by them are "Beverly Hills" and that one song from a Mary-Kate and Ashley movie. This is the song that I found. And I don't know why I like it...but I do. A lot.
02: Ride by Twenty One Pilots
Why it's taken me so long to hear this song I have no idea, but I'd like to take this moment to apologize to myself for it. It's so much fun and the second verse is so important?? Genuinely, even if you don't like this band, you'll probably like this song. So give it a listen.
03: Kanye by The Chainsmokers feat. sirenXX
LISTEN. This is currently my feel good song. Like, I'm not the biggest fan of Kanye West or anything, like he's alright I guess I don't know, I don't have much of an opinion. But I mean, you can not be a fan of him and still know what he's about, so when you hear this song you just know. Heck yeah you want to be like Kanye. Heck yeah you want to be the king of you always. Seriously guys, if you only listen to one song from this entire mixtape, have it be this one. You'll feel better when you're through with it (video above).
04: Youth by Troye Sivan
I believe you'll see another song by Troye make an appearance, and all I have to say about that is duh. This boy is a god. I adore this song and I adore him and his cute little hand flicks and awkward dances and his blazing blue eyes that could save the dolphins. If you haven't heard this song, where've you been, my guy? Get with it.
05: Roll Up by The Struts
The Struts are a band that I've mentioned before, probably on the winter mixtapes, when their track "Could Have Been Me" had just come out. This song is from the rest of their album, which was just released either earlier this month or last month (can't remember oops), and let me just alert you of the absolute joy this album has been to listen to. Fun fact about them: Jade from Little Mix dates the bass player Jed, and they're the cutest couple ever? Anyway, if you like rock music, 80's influences, and rolling R's, these are your guys.
06: Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande
This song is so impressive vocally, as Ariana's songs usually are. But it's most impressive when you look up the video of her singing it a cappella, like I'm pretty sure it added ten years onto my life and cleared my pores. Go find it.
07: fOol fOr YoU by ZAYN
First of all, I am so annoyed at having to type out the titles of the songs like that. Secondly, this is my favorite song on his new album and if any of you don't think it sounds like a rejected song from Midnight Memories then we can't be friends, sorry, I don't make the rules.
08: Do My Thang by Miley Cyrus
Please don't make fun of me for this song. It just puts me in a really good mood whenever I listen to it because I honestly laugh out loud at at least 85 percent of it. Whenever she calls herself a southern bell I imagine Hannah Montana singing it on the TV show in 2006 and literally almost cry laugh, like it's funny every single time. You're welcome.
09: Queens by MisterWives
A long time ago you might have heard the song "Reflections" by these guys (by a long time ago, I think I meant just early 2015 or something...it couldn't have been much longer ago than that). "Queens" isn't any newer; it's on the same album. But it's super good. I just love this band's sound a lot.
10: for him. by Troye Sivan
Ah, here he is again. Yeah, this is my favorite track from Troye's album and nothing will ever beat the fourth verse and extra refrain when he sings it live. I will forever hold a grudge against him for not putting that version on the album. It's life-changing.
11: Fools Gold by Fitz and the Tantrums
Listen, I had no clue who these guys (and girl?) were before this song, but I'm glad I know them now. Actually they have another song that I vaguely know but I never realized it was them. Regardless, this song is fabulous. It has a slight Killers vibe, which I dig so hard, and then a fun older pop vibe as well, like I don't know how to describe it completely but you'll understand once you listen to it.
12: Young Stars by The Struts
This one wasn't my first favorite on their new album, but I do love it now. It grew on me. The chorus is just really pleasing to listen to, I don't know? Honestly just listen to their entire album.
13: LIKE I WOULD by ZAYN
You know what? At least he made this one all caps. One or the other – I'm good with that. Mix them? Nope. Anyway, the funny thing about this song making my mixtape is that I hated it when it was first released. I was so disappointed in it. Actually I hated every single pre-released track except for "Pillowtalk" (although I didn't like it as much as I thought I would), but they all did end up growing on me. It's the first verse of this one, man. It's got a wicked tune.
14: Fall Together by The Temper Trap
If you know anything by this band, it's "Sweet Disposition," aka the song that Harry had incorrect song lyrics tattooed onto his arm for. They just released this, as far as I'm aware, and I just like it a lot. They must have a very distinct sound that carries in most of their music, because I hear a lot of "Sweet Disposition" in this one, like the style of it. So of course I like it. SD was a jam.
15: Memories by Panic! At The Disco
Oh, hello, yes. Hi. I'm still playing catch-up with Panic! music. But fear not, I think I'm nearly finished. This ended up being my favorite song from Vices & Virtues. It reminds me of "Collar Full" and how easy it was to love it due to the tune and the catchy chorus. Yeah, it's just nice to listen to. Pleasurable.
16: Mary Go Round by The Struts
Dang, three songs by these guys? Um, yeah. I told you it was a good album. It was released in the UK in 2014 I think originally, and this 2016 release has a slightly altered version. One of the biggest changes was the addition of this song, and pretty much everyone agrees that it's the best song on the album, so you should totally keep that in mind when you take my advice and look them up.
17: Up by The Score
So, if any of you know me at all, you'll know that one of my top 5 favorite movies ever is Begin Again, who is directed by the same guy who directed the musical Once: the lovely John Carney. He's releasing another movie musical this year (I think) called Sing Street, and the soundtrack was just released. That's where this song came from. Haven't listened to it much but I love it a lot and I love John Carney's musicals, so obviously it was going to make it onto this mixtape.
18: Let's Dance to Joy Division by The Wombats
Okay, this is a weird song. I won't lie to you. But it's a jump-around kind of fun once the chorus hits, and whenever I hear it come on shuffle it puts me in a good mood, and now I know most of the lyrics so when I sing along I feel weird and also happy, which is a nice combination sometimes. I have no idea what joy division is, but I like dancing to it, so here we are.
19: The Emotion by BORNS
I really like this band. I'm pretty sure I suggested another song by them on my winter tapes, "Electric Love," and this one is just as fun. They've got a really apparent sound that I love, and it's always very cutesy. I'll be grateful to T-Swizzle for recommending them to us for a long time I think.
20: Can't Help Falling in Love by Twenty One Pilots
Actually mostly just by Tyler Joseph, but it's fine. Josh makes an appearance at the end. I think we all know that this is the best cover to exist of this song, and I just figured it'd make a nice finale to this CD. It makes everyone happy every single time (unless they're crying over it at a wedding or something, but you know what I mean).
There you all have it. I hope you find something new that you've not heard before, and as always, if you have any music recommendations that you think I'll enjoy, please share them with me below! Take care. xx
