; little mix "glory days" album review

I can't believe it's already been a year since I wrote my review for Little Mix's Get Weird album. I still remember the night I sat down and listened to a majority of the album for the first time, writing my thoughts on each track as I went. Hearing "Secret Love Song" and falling to pieces, and then "Secret Love Song, Pt. II" and being crushed into tiny dust particles. Feeling embarrassed to listen to "A.D.I.D.A.S." So many great memories, and it all feels like just yesterday.

And now, here I am. A year older, lacking a year's worth of sleep probably, and beyond ready for more Little Mix music. No matter how many times One Direction lets me down, I always have Little Mix.

Unlike last time, this won't be a review based on first listen. The only track I'll be hearing for the first time is the acoustic version of "Touch." I had to listen to whatever wasn't released early last night – seriously, I couldn't wait. I've been ready for this album since even before "Shout Out To My Ex" came out. Imagine the state I was in after.

So, here we go (p.s. this is the deluxe album):

01: SHOUT OUT TO MY EX – 10/10

This song. Like, I feel like we didn't take this for the warning that it was. Or at least I didn't. After the line "I hope she gettin' better sex / hope she ain't faking it like I did" I should have realized that whatever rules that kept them from saying things like "dick" and "sex" in Get Weird were long gone, because...wow. But anyway, apart from that, I loved this song immediately. It was like hearing "Black Magic" for the first time all over again. Such a bop. You've all heard it a million times already I'm sure, so I won't go on and on about it, but just honestly bless this song. I'm so glad they recorded and released it. Favorite lyric: (It's not a lyric, I just love all the high notes okay sue me those are my favorite parts)

02: TOUCH – 8.5/10

As dance-y as "Shout Out To My Ex" is, this is really the first sample of the type of music Little Mix brings us with this album. A lot of the tracks are meant for the dance floor, and this one is no exception. And I mean, so was SOTME, but there's that DJ beat and the remix-y sounds that I associate with club hits, and "Touch" kind of hints at all of that during the chorus. SOTME is more of a song you'd jump around and scream with your friends at a concert. You know? Anyway, I do like this song. It doesn't have as high as a rating as some because there are others I like more; I really enjoy the chorus when it's repeated and there is more harmonizing. Favorite lyric: And now my whole week, my whole week is golden / Can you see me glowing?

03: F.U. – 10/10

I read on Tumblr right after this song came out that this song was "Love Me Like You" but stronger, and I can't totally say that I understand that, as the songs seem like they're about relatively different things (unless it's meant to mean that the sex is so good they just can't stay away? I don't know). But it is as good as "Love Me Like You." Like, I for sure didn't expect the whole alphabet thing at the end of the chorus, and it's adorable. And I didn't expect Perrie's gritty vocals, but like always she was incredible. There was so much that I wasn't expecting from this song, but I'm so happy about all of it and I'm just so glad it exists. Favorite lyric: I practice my lines in the mirror / then you smile, that's my killer

04: OOPS (feat. Charlie Puth) – 10/10

I don't know what I was thinking when I saw that Charlie Puth was going to be featured on this album, but it wasn't that his track would end up being one of my favorites. But here I am. Never Mr. Puth's biggest fan, believe me, I am shocked. I have to say though that if you're in the same boat I'm in (with not liking his music much), give this track a shot. It's super sweet. That's the best adjective that comes to mind; the lyrics are sweet, the vocals are sweet, the tune is sweet, the beat...well, the beat is more than sweet. And the whistles in the beginning? Yes. Oh, also I've decided I'm getting a big "Boys Like You" vibe (by Who Is Fancy) from it. Favorite lyric: Now I accidentally know that you're in love with me too

05: YOU GOTTA NOT – 7.5/10

I hate to not give this one a better rating, but I'm sorry – I just don't like Meghan Trainor. And this song sounds so much like her that my roommate (who knows very well what Little Mix sounds like and can almost pick them all out by their voices) literally thought it was her until I told her it was Little Mix. Like, I don't hate this and I don't suspect I'll be skipping it when I play this album in my car, but I don't actively seek it out and it's just simply not my favorite. I wish it didn't sound so much like Meghan Trainor. Homegirl writes songs that don't sound like her ("Someday" by Michael Buble, for a recent example), so I don't understand why this one has to sound identical to her, but oh well. Also the lyrics are kind of offensive and degrading at times and I'm not really here for that. Favorite lyric: You argue with my best friend? You gotta not

06: DOWN & DIRTY – 8/10

Here we're re-introduced to the DJ/remix-y tracks, which we strayed from since "Touch." I'm super into the beat in this one, which surprises me because I didn't think I would get into it after I first heard it. Unlike "Touch," the music isn't always accompanied by vocals (which is usually pretty typical of this type of music), and that's what I'm not the biggest fan of. Still though, it's nice. The intro music is such a fun tune, and when it comes back throughout the sound I'm always super hype about it. And of course, it's not a Little Mix song without at least one high note (thank you, Perrie). Again, not my favorite, but it's cool. Favorite lyric: Check out the stamps on my Visa / We international divas / but I started out making your pizzas

07: POWER – 10/10

I just want you all to know that there are two things I did not expect from this album. This is the first one. What a jam but like Perrie's vocals in the beginning threw me SO OFF. The revving engine was the first sign that "Power" was going to be a whole new ballgame, and then her vocals happened and I was so confused. Lyric-wise, it follows a pretty common theme that much of the rest of the album does. The whole "motorbike" part makes me laugh for some reason, but like the tune is for sure the show-stopper of the song. It's so much fun and appropriately powerful. Also I think it's Jesy (could be wrong) who, in the first verse, comes in with "Oh I'm a machine when I do it / I'll be catching fire, gasoline when I do it" and like the whole "motorbike" thing, it makes me laugh so much. Which is why I love that the second verse sounds like that for the whole thing. Just...yes. This song wins everything, it's so great. Favorite lyric: I ain't the chick to walk behind you around town

08: YOUR LOVE – 10/10

Before I heard this song, someone on Tumblr said it makes them feel like they're on a romantic evening out with someone around sunset and the night breeze is blowing their hair around their face and stuff. Yeah. I mean, as soon as Egyptian cotton was referenced in the second line, I knew I was going to love it (fun fact about me: obsessed with Egyptian cotton even though I don't own any, thanks Uptown Girls). I'd say this is the most uplifting, romantic song on the entire album. There are some Lion King-esque chants going on, Leigh hits a wicket high note, and the vocals are so pretty especially in the verses. I'm so into it. Favorite lyric: Deeper than oceans, as sweet as devotion, it's all I need

09: NOBODY LIKE YOU – 8/10

My favorite thing about Jesy's voice is the way it sounds so emotional in ballads like this one. Like, you can't help but believe what she's singing about because she constantly sounds like she's on the verge of tears. But in the first chorus her voice does something different than what I'm used to and it kind of blew me away the first time I heard it – it becomes gritty and for a second I honestly thought a different girl had come in, but it was still her. I was super impressed. But apart from beautiful vocals, this track isn't my favorite because I just feel like Little Mix has had way better ballads. Like, "Secret Love Song" and "Love Me Or Leave Me" from Get Weird alone were so much more powerful. It's not like this is a bad song, but just knowing what they already have under their belts, it's hard not to compare it and be a little disappointed. Favorite lyric: I've tried goodbye a hundred times, not one of them true

10: NO MORE SAD SONGS – 9/10

I was expecting a sad song from this title honestly, but I'm glad that isn't what I got. Despite being about something that normally would be told through a sad song, we're almost fooled by a pretty uplifting tune and beat. The strongest part, to me, is the pre-chorus. It's a little repetitive; while many of their songs are this way, for some reason this one seems more so despite the fact that it's just the chorus that continues to repeat. It just seems like there are less lyrics going on, if that makes sense. It's an enjoyable song. I'd also even call it a "safe" one – sort of like a filler track on the album. Favorite lyric: For tonight I'm going to get my mind off it / Don't care that someone's got his hands all over my body

11: PRIVATE SHOW – 10/10

This is the song I was most looking forward to hearing, obviously due to the title. I think I was just so ready after "A.D.I.D.A.S." on the last album for Little Mix to spread their wings and sex things up a little bit. You could tell they wanted to. So when I saw the Glory Days tracklist for the first time, I couldn't help but hope "Private Show" would be all I hoped it would be. It didn't disappoint. My favorite part of it is when the key changes in the chorus, as I definitely didn't expect that. It makes the tune a little sweeter after the verses and everything else comes off as super edgy. Like, the whole thing is super mature and it feels like something an older girl group would release, not a current one, until that key change and then you're like "oh yeah, it's Little Mix" but it's the best moment. I don't know, I love this song. It's going to be so much fun to sing in my car. Favorite lyric: It's loving with a little twist

12: NOTHING ELSE MATTERS – 10/10

The opening music to this track when there are no vocals, while short, is such a breath of fresh air. Especially after "Private Show" it feels like you're literally taking a step outside from a dark, crowded nightclub and just letting yourself breathe. You're with your friends and for the moment you aren't worried about school or family or money or politics or whatever it is that stresses you out. You just close your eyes and feel content and happy. That's what this song feels like. The echo-y effect on their voices during the verses and the bridge is a really nice touch – kind of reminiscent of 80's movies that transport you to a simpler time, and I feel like that helps the song do the same thing. Then the chorus hits and the girls sing all together and it's just so nice. This track is so important. Favorite lyric: And nothing else matters like love / You just gotta believe if it leaves that it's coming back around

13: BEEP BEEP – 10/10

Remember when I said that "Power" was the first of two things I didn't expect from this album? This is the second. Friends, meet "A.D.I.D.A.S." 2.0, only...raunchier. But in the best way. I just got done telling you how much I wanted Little Mix to spread their wings, and let me tell you, "Private Show" was nothing compared to this. My favorite thing about Little Mix lately is their ability to come up with so many different ways to talk about sex without actually saying "sex," but I mean... It's almost like they gave up on trying to be discreet with this one. If all the references go over your head, I will honestly be really surprised. All I want to know is when they'll finally be able to say "dick," because this is two albums in a row they've had to bleep it out. Favorite lyric: My leather jacket smells like your aftershave

14: FREAK – 7/10

The annoying thing about this song is that I love the lyrics but I just can't get into the tune. I wanted so much more from the chorus, but it's mostly the same two notes except for one line, and it was too broken up by the "boy" thing to be as powerful as it should have been. The verses don't do much for me either. It reminds me of "OMG" from Get Weird, which is another track that I just couldn't get into no matter how badly I wanted to. No matter how many times I listened to it, it just never was one that I could jam to, and I feel like this will be the same story. That being said, I do like the bridge and the pre-chorus. I wish the rest of the song felt as powerful as those parts do. Favorite lyric: See I've got two sides of me, boy / the one you want your mother to meet / and the one that's a freak, boy

15: TOUCH (Acoustic) – 9.5/10

Alright, so this one will be a first listen review. I already feel like I'm going to like it more than the first version because I'm not a big fan of the DJ/remix-y vibes usually, so an acoustic version of one of those songs will probably be exactly what I need. Halfway through it I can already tell you that the vocals are prettier because there is room for them to riff, and with less effects you can just hear them. They've done more harmonizing with this one and the backup vocals accompanying whoever is singing lead are so great. Yeah, I'm super into this. I wish it was a bop the way the first one was, but I appreciate the song as a whole much more this way. Favorite lyric: (Same as the first version)

There you have it, friends. My final thoughts are just that overall, Little Mix has come so far. Like, listen to anything from DNA and then do your favorite track from Glory Days and I promise you'll feel so proud. I can't wait until they finally get proper promo in the U.S. so that more people hear what they can do. I want to be able to rave about them to more than just my roommate, you know?

What are your favorite songs from the album? Have any different opinions than my own? I'd love to hear them. Thanks for reading! x
