; little mix "get weird" album review

It took such an unfortunate amount of time before I finally looked into Little Mix. I always knew who they were (RIP Zerrie), could point out each girl by name, and can still recite all the words to "Wings" after not having heard it in ages. To tell you the truth, I still don't know what finally got me into them mid-2014, but a huge regret of mine is not getting into them sooner. It started with their sophomore album Salute, and I fell in love with tracks like "Towers," "Little Me," "Move," and, of course, the title track "Salute." From there, I finally got a hold of their first album D.N.A. and it's been a properly fantastic relationship ever since.

When "Black Magic" was released as Get Weird's first single, I didn't jump at the chance to listen to it. It was out for several days before I finally found the time, and let me tell you that it was a religious experience. It was so different from their last album. And like, I adored the last album, but "Black Magic" was already better. The 80's pop influences and just...God, I can still recall that moment I heard it for the first time. Still grateful I was alone. Every single promotional track released from this album after that was even more magical. Despite knowing Perrie, Jade, Jesy, and Leigh-Anne were about to put out a game-changer of an album after "Black Magic," I became somehow even more positive as the days dragged on.

And now, we're finally here. Apart from "Black Magic," "Love Me Like You," "Hair," "Weird People," and "Grown," every track review you're about to read is based on my first listening experience. If my opinions change after several listens, I'll come back through and add edits so that you'll all be aware.

                  Here we go:

01: BLACK MAGIC – 9.5/10

Every single part of this track shines. In the girls' previous albums, there are occasional moments I could point to where the production or the way their voices were recorded was just so unflattering, and this is no longer a problem on this album. We can see that right away with "Black Magic." And, I mean, you've already heard the song and you already love it. It's pretty self-explanatory. This is a hit. The only reason I didn't give it a 10/10 rating is because somehow, impossibly, their second single topped it. Read on below. Favorite lyrics: Boy you belong to me / I got the recipe / and it's called black magic

02: LOVE ME LIKE YOU – 10/10

GOD I love this song. I actually just wrote a paper on it for a 400-level college course. I didn't think defeating "Black Magic" as the catchiest song in the universe would be possible, but alas. I've never been more willing to be proven wrong. While their first single was heavily influenced by the very best of 80's pop, their second is influenced by arguably the greatest era of music: Motown. The sha-la-la-la's will genuinely make a home in your head and you won't be rid of them for months. And again with the vocals; from the strong falsettos in the verses to the beautiful harmonies throughout the chorus, I swear I've died a thousand times already because of this song. Also, dare I ask, has Little Mix finally crossed into PG-13 territory? About time. (I wasn't going to add this, but might as well: my roommate and I do a mean duet to this during car rides, if anyone cared. I figured out the harmonies. It's always incredible.) Favorite lyrics: L-O-V-E / Love the way you give it to me / When you're with me / boy I want it everyday

03: WEIRD PEOPLE – 10/10

The first time I heard this song, I was blown away. This feels like the finale song to some campy 80's dance musical movie, and guys, I love campy 80's dance musical movies (ask anybody I know). I also hate dancing (ironic), but I swear there has never been another song that has ever made me want to get up and actually dance in a very Taylor Swift-esque manner (except for maybe "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins). I'm just so here for "Weird People." The melody, the random bass guy, the lyrics, the beat, the vocals, I just... I fully understand why this is Jade's favorite track because it should probably be everyone's. Favorite lyrics: Don't let them other suckers hate on you

04: SECRET LOVE SONG (feat. Jason Derulo) – 10/10

This song is so mature. The chorus is blazing, a wildfire that doesn't intend to quit anytime soon. I'm so impressed I'm almost speechless. During the first verse I was getting some serious "These Four Walls" vibes, but as it went on, that disappeared. And my love, Jason, was a surprisingly fantastic addition to this song – not that I didn't think he would be, but I think I just wasn't sure what to expect. Had he been featured on Salute I wouldn't have been as shocked; this is definitely a pleasant surprise. I heard a lot of hype about this song to be honest, and some of you may have no clue what I'm talking about (though I'd be surprised because...lol, come on), but Tumblr sure seems to think this is a serious Larry anthem. And I can see it now. I was afraid it'd been overhyped, but after my first listen, I can see that everyone was right to rave. The girls' vocals are both powerful and sweet, the music is both touching and strong. Everything balances everything out, and I'm so in love. I can't wait to show this track to every single person I know. Favorite lyrics: Why can't you hold me in the street? / Why can't you kiss me on the dancefloor?

05: HAIR – 10/10

Had I reviewed this song after my first listen, I probably would have given it a 9/10. It's not that I didn't think it was amazing at first; obviously a 9 is a pretty high rating all things considered. But it grew on me somehow a lot more the more I listened to it. Unlike Get Weird's first two singles, this track didn't appear to be influenced by any other decade of pop music and was purely modern girl pop. That being said, modern girl pop is incredible. I just wasn't expecting it, understandably, due to the already existing theme. Anyway, after a couple listens, "Hair" quickly became not only a favorite of mine, but a favorite of my roommate's as well (who most definitely needed to hear these lyrics). I can hear a bit of their last album here too, which is always great. Favorite lyrics: Gonna bleach him out / peroxide on him / Hair on the floor / with my memory of him

06: GROWN – 9.5/10

It's so hard to not rate all of these a 10/10. The first time I heard this song was when the girls performed it at the Apple Music Festival. Granted, I was mostly sweating impatiently as I waited for One Direction's performance, but I do remember being super impressed with "Grown." I forgot about it though until they released it as a promo track with "Weird People," and I'm still so impressed. I find myself humming *that part* (you know which one) all of the time, and the message underneath the shiny, perfect vocals is so relevant to my life that I want to scream it from the rooftops of my hometown for everyone to hear. If there weren't a couple songs that I like just a teeny tiny bit more, this track would have gotten a 10. Favorite lyrics: Your voice dropped, you thought that you could handle me / You played me, but now you trying to holla me

07: I LOVE YOU – 8.5/10

A very, very soft song compared to the previous six. Jesy's falsetto almost resembles Ellie Goulding a bit in the first verse, which was super pretty. As usual, as soon as it's Perrie's turn with the mic things begin to heat up. Her voice is too powerful to rein in, if you ask me, and that's fine. It's always a nice touch. While "Secret Love Song" sounded a bit more like "These Four Walls" in the verses, I would say that this song could be a better comparison to it in the sense that I have a feeling it will be just as underappreciated as "These Four Walls" was. But like "These Four Walls," "I Love You" is a magnificent tune; it's just got a lot to live up to at this point. Favorite lyrics: Even though it's broken / I love you anyway

08: OMG – 8/10

The opening notes straight up made me think that for some reason I'd mistakenly clicked on a Charlie XCX song, but that wasn't the case. Instead, I clicked on a Little Mix track that appears to be heavily influenced by Britney Spears circa "...Oops I Did It Again" sound-wise. It's an interesting combination of modern pop and 90's/early 2000's pop, and to be totally honest I think it's something that's going to have to grow on me. But I do really enjoy all of the different decade tributes I've already throughout this album. I'm a big advocate for recycling the world's favorite sounds, and at one point, all of these sounds have been someone's favorite. I wouldn't want anyone to bring them back but Little Mix. Favorite lyrics: I don't even know / why they fall like dominoes

09: LIGHTNING – 8/10

First of all, I am entirely in love with the opening sound effects. Like, please lay that on me more often. From that point on though, I don't know that this is what I was expecting at all. I feel like I expected something...bigger. I ended up feeling very underwhelmed by the end, and I'm definitely not a fan of the but I do bit and the music that follows. However, I do love the point of the song, the message it gets across, and I enjoyed the bridge a lot. The choir part was a really nice touch, and I think that they tried to do something really unique with this song, and I get that. It just didn't work for me, at least not yet...my opinion very well might change. EDIT: already after the third listen, I like it a lot more. I'd increase my rating from an 8/10 to a 9/10. Favorite lyrics: One kiss / turned the skies to gray / I'll never get away / no shelter from the rain

10: A.D.I.D.A.S. – 10/10

I...don't even know where to begin with this song. I know I said that "Love Me Like You" was crossing into PG-13 territory, but I was wrong. This is the type of PG-13 material that is so hush hush that it makes you almost giggle at the some of the lyrics, but it's, like...it's straight up about having sex. Wanting to have the sex. And it's done much more obviously than "Love Me Like You" was, where they attempted to disguise some of the lyrics ("He might got the biggest car" I hope you all realized they weren't talking about an actual car), and it's refreshing yet unexpected. But it's such a bop. And I'd literally pay the price of the whole album just for an entire track of Leigh rapping. It's like the entire song lyrically leads up to that point and the girls carefully skirt around saying anything too outright raunchy. Then Leigh's part comes and it's like "lol, let's go." I won't give away the ending of her part, because it is hands down the most unexpected part of the entire song, but I love it. Favorite lyrics: Excuse me / do me or lose me / Get me to the bedroom / do your duty

11: LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME – 9.5/10

I just have one question. Does Perrie even know that she has one of the strongest, most powerful, beautiful voices in pop music currently? Her vocals are astounding in this track. I'm so blown away. The song in general is so pretty and raw, and I think everyone will be able to relate to it on some level. If there's one thing Little Mix is amazing at, it's incorporating actual, legitimate emotion into their vocals, and while most obviously Perrie does this in the chorus, it's undeniable that Jade does it exceptionally well during the bridge as well. Jesy and Leigh did it too, but you could feel it most with Perrie and Jade. Also, this is so weird and random and probably no one will get what I'm talking about, but some of Jade's vocals in the bridge remind me of a singer called Belinda (if you knew of her at all, you'd recognize her from one of the Cheetah Girls movies where she sand a song called "Why Wait" and had a duet with Drew Seeley called "Dance With Me"). That was a compliment, by the way. Favorite lyrics: No, this isn't fair / love me or leave me here

12: THE END – 8.5/10

If you ever needed proof that the girls of Little Mix could all actually sing, here it is. As far as I'm aware (I can't completely recall all of D.N.A. right now), this is Little Mix's second a cappella track in any of their albums (though "Boy" from Salute was only half a cappella), and I really do love when they do this. I think it's a fun trend, and it's always a great reminder of how well all four of their voices mesh to create gorgeous harmonies. While pretty simplistic, the song in general has an inspiring message that everyone needs to hear at least once in their lifetime and it's an easy listen. I hope we see more tracks like this in the future. Favorite lyrics: Oh I'm thinking you'll love me right / but you never will, no / It's too much to bear

13: I WON'T – 10/10

I love the anthemic feel this track has. You're clapping and bopping along to the chorus by the second time you hear it, and during the verses you're already appreciating the fun little piano bit after just the first couple lines. I definitely think this is one of the stronger songs on the album and I'm sort of surprised it didn't make the regular tracklist. The harmonies in the bridge leading into the final choruses were impressive (like usual). This will be a quick favorite for almost everyone. It's super easy to love. Favorite lyrics: 'Cause I know that nothing good comes easy / if it did I wouldn't be me

14: SECRET LOVE SONG, PT. II – 10/10

First of all, I couldn't even write the review for this one until after the second listen because I was genuinely overcome with emotion. If I have a lot to say about this one, I apologize. It's like, "Secret Love Song" itself was so beautiful I almost couldn't even handle it. I don't know what I thought would happen with Part II, but it wasn't this. It's softer, much more chilling. Jade's vocals are echo-y in the opening verse, which somehow is like a dagger through your heart and the chorus hasn't even hit yet. Jesy always sounds like she's on the brink of true emotion the way it is, but on this track, I just...God. And again, Perrie. Listen to the choruses (the first one isn't her, but the second and half of the third are) and you'll understand why I literally don't have to follow her name with anything more. You'll know. By the time I finished the track, my hand was pressed against my mouth in what I'm assuming was shock, and I just had to sit for a second and contemplate what I'd just experienced. Everything – and I mean everything – about "Secret Love Song, Pt. II" is indescribably heartbreaking and unearthly beautiful. Please listen to it. EDIT: I've now listened to this three times and I'm beginning to cry. It just becomes more painfully incredible the more you hear it. Do yourself a favor and go find a box of tissues and your favorite stuffed animal friend. Favorite lyrics: I wish that we could be like that / Why can't we be like that? / 'Cause I'm yours

15: CLUED UP – 9/10

This is such an unfortunate song to follow "Secret Love Song, Pt. II" honestly. I think it would have been much more impressive had it been placed anywhere else, but as of right now, it's really hard to stand up to the powerhouse ballad I just cried over, you know? I do love the simple acoustic/campfire song-like feel to it, but I wish I'd heard it earlier. Regardless, it's a fun little tune. I felt that they really tried to do something with this one, and I'm not sure if they succeeded, but the attempt is admirable and it's a good song in its own right. Favorite lyrics: I will never run, never run from a lesson / I will never hide, never hide from the present

16: THE BEGINNING – NOT RATED

So, I'm not going to rate this one because it's just a short, little closer. I will, however, comment on how much I love its allusion to the opening track ("Black Magic") in the third verse/stanza. I think it's super clever. Also, I adore the girls assuring us that they've hardly gotten started yet as far as their career is concerned. Yes, please give me more. I'll be waiting.

Admittedly, Get Weird ended up surprising me, but I still stand by my original statement (which I made as a post on my profile, not in this album review): this is one of the best albums of 2015. Little Mix has experimented with so many new, fun sounds in just 16 songs that by the time it's over you're wishing it wasn't. And in the end, all of these flavorful sounds sort of just make you feel like maybe this is Little Mix's sound? A mixture of all of the best ones. Because really, they can do it all.

I know it seems like I rate almost every album I review with 10/10, but the truth is that I probably only review albums that I know I'm going to love. So, again, Get Weird has earned an easy 10/10 rating. I can't wait for the songs I didn't immediately love to grow on me, and I can't wait to keep loving the ones I already adore. Give the album a listen and share with me what you thought about it! First impressions? Second? Which track is your favorite?

                Thanks for reading. (:
