; all time low "future hearts" album review

All Time Low has been one of my favorite bands for years. They honestly have a little something for everyone, whether you're a Top 40 fan or a punk rocker. Sometimes certain albums will have a more dominant sound than others, but either way, you can't go wrong with this band. I've been looking forward to "Future Hearts" for what feels like ages; when I read an article last year about the most anticipated albums of 2015 and I saw ATL on there, I nearly cried of happiness. It used to feel like just yesterday that "Don't Panic" was released, but hearing news of more ATL music made me realize that it's been almost two years (which in hindsight is a long time).

So, in celebration of more amazing All Time Low music, I figured what better album to review first than this one? I hope you all consider giving the album a listen, even if you have never listened to the band before. If anyone is curious about how I feel about their other albums, let me know and I can review those too. It'd actually be super fun.

                Well, without further ado...

01: SATELLITE - 7.5/10

I think that this song might have been better off as an album closer than an album opener. I wouldn't call it a slow song or a ballad, but it definitely isn't very fast-paced, and it sort of has an anthemic, movie finale sort of feel to it. A lot of people aren't huge fans of it, and granted I'm not going to go out of my way to add it to any of my playlists any time soon, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. The angsty early teen inside of me loves a good hopeless track, and that's exactly what this one is. Again, not album opener material in my opinion, but I think it belonged on an album (perhaps not this one, though - up for debate). Favorite lyrics: Growing up with eyes glued shut.

02: KICKING AND SCREAMING - 9/10

This song would be a much better album opener than Satellite was. I think it's a lot more reminiscent of All Time Low's "Nothing Personal" album (a favorite of mine) in terms of the chorus; I can hear Lost In Stereo and Stella in there for sure. This is a fun listen. Guaranteed this summer it'll be one of the many from this album making the cut for my mixed CD to blast in my truck with the windows down. It's not my favorite, but in the song's defense, "Future Hearts" has too many gems to choose from. But if you're a fan of the "Nothing Personal" album, I guarantee you'll enjoy this song. Favorite lyrics: Fantasy competes to be my only / I'm f*cking lonely.

03: SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE - 9.5/10

When I first this song a few days after its release, part of me was disappointed. Looking back now, though, to whenever that was, I have no idea why. This track sounds like it came straight out of "Dirty Work," which is another album I've always loved (it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, however). I'm hearing bits of That Girl and I Feel Like Dancing, and just like the latter, I think it was a perfect first single. It's definitely one of, if not the, most pop-oriented song on the album, and that's fine. For ATL fans who have always preferred a punkier sound over a pop one, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a big fat disappointment. I happen to enjoy both sounds, no matter which one is dominant. Also the music video was fabulous. Favorite lyrics: I'm a cliché in a song / And everybody's singing along.

04: KIDS IN THE DARK - 10/10

I loved this song the first time I listened to it, and I love it after the twentieth time. It's relatable, it's beautiful, and it's one of biggest anthems that ATL has ever produced. It's the Reckless and the Brave of "Future Hearts," and that might be one of the reasons I fell for it so quickly. Honestly, every single lyric shouts at you and echoes for hours after you finish listening to it, and this sounds crazy, but I swear you come away a better person from hearing it (you may hear something like that again; there are a couple tracks on this album that have the same effect). Sometimes songs have super powerful choruses and then mediocre verses (or the other way around), but this isn't one of them. The entire thing, from start to finish, is a powerhouse. And the music video makes me want to party forever and forget about everything that's ever cracked me. Favorite lyrics: So let the world sing / What a shame, what a shame / Beautiful scars on critical veins.

05: RUNAWAYS - 8.5/10

Like every song on this album, Runaways gives us a hecka catchy chorus. The vibe I'm getting from it is a sandy seaside town hosting a boardwalk festival at sunset and ATL is performing for a bunch of hipster teenagers and young adults who keep lighting things on fire. The lyrics are empowering in a sense; I feel assured that if I ever were to run away from my problems, it wouldn't necessarily be running away from them, I'd just be...over it. Like I don't need that toxic stuff in my life. So I relate to it on a more personal level I suppose because I kind of did run away from my hometown after graduation, but I know that not everyone feels the same way I do about it. It's not like this track stands out from many of the others on the album, but it's a good tune. Another summer mixed CD winner. Favorite lyrics: They won't catch us in the dark / Roll like thunder, burn like stars.

06: MISSING YOU - 10/10

I had high expectations for this song when I went to listen to it for the first time. Tumblr had literally blown up with amazing compliments and praises about it, and I was almost worried that it'd let me down for how high the bar had been raised. However, it definitely didn't. This song is easily one of the best on the album hands down. It's easy to listen to, its tune is pleasurable, the lyrics tattoo themselves onto your heart (I swear), and something about the gritty smoothness of Alex's voice in the verses makes me want to prance through a field of daisies with Harry Styles. Honestly, no one can listen to this song and say that the final two lines of the chorus didn't crumble their souls into pretty little pieces. I have nothing but good things to say about this song, honestly. It's the Therapy of "Future Hearts" in a sense, if I must compare it to something. Favorite lyrics: With so much left to do / You'll be missing out / And we'll be missing you.

07: CINDERBLOCK GARDEN - 9.5/10

This was the first track from the album that I heard (apart from Something's Gotta Give) because I was drawn in by its aesthetically pleasing title. And it didn't disappoint. While the chorus is powerful in its own right, I honestly think that the verses take the gold here. Actually having listened to it a few times now, I'm almost left wishing that I could get a little more from the chorus? I don't know how to explain it exactly, and I might be the only one to feel this way. The type of hype that this song got during the album's leak was similar to the hype that Where Do Broken Hearts Go got when One Direction's "Four" was leaked, and like WDBHG, Cinderblock Garden has become one of my favorites on the album. But, like I said, I now find myself almost longing for a little bit more of a punch from the chorus. Favorite lyrics: Finding the gold in our darkest moment / Watching the roads turning into white roses (the imagery in those lines from a poetic angel is lovely).

08: TIDAL WAVES - 9/10

Tidal Waves definitely wasn't one of my favorites at first, but it has grown on me greatly. You can definitely hear the influence that Mark Hoppus (from Blink 182) has on the overall sound, and I think it served the ballad well. The chorus is so despondent and sad and makes me want to put headphones in and listen to it during a downpour in the middle of a sandy beach while, like, a hurricane starts to hit. But I'd say this is a song that probably has to grow on you when it's compared to some of the others. After several listens to the entire album, it's easier to appreciate the hidden gems like this one that might not be big stand-outs like Kids in the Dark and Missing You. Favorite lyrics: Spread your lies like fireflies / In a wild hot summer trying to pull me under.

09: DON'T YOU GO - 10/10

To be totally honest, this is my favorite track on the album. I've been listening to it practically on repeat since it was leaked (I'm horrible, I know), and I'm not even close to having had enough of it. At its heart, this song is basically about having a one night stand with someone after having an interesting night at a party or a bar or something together and then waking up the next morning with said one night stand and wishing it could be more than that. Someone on Tumblr compared its sound to 5 Seconds of Summer's music, and I think that's about as accurate as anyone will be able to get. And it makes sense, because ATL and 5SOS had some writing sessions together several months back, and if this song was a product of one of them...I can't complain. There's nothing really too deep here, but it's a fun track and I love it. Favorite lyrics: I got my ass kicked / But you held the ice / I was a train wreck / But you took the ride (also I really enjoy the desperate I don't want you to leave line).

10: BAIL ME OUT - 9/10

Honestly you can listen to opening music and know right away that Joel Madden had some kind of input on this track. And then the entire thing is exactly the same. It's also kind of similar to some Simple Plan music from their "Get Your Heart On" album, if you ask me. It's pretty lighthearted, pretty chill. The chorus isn't super powerful or anything, but it's pretty catchy and repetitive (in a good way) and will have you singing along after just a few listens. I don't know if it will have the same effect on everyone as it did on me, but I know that after going through the entire album once and wanting to throw a few of tracks I immediately liked onto one of my playlists, the tune to this song popped into my head. I didn't even know what it was called at that point; I just knew I liked it. Favorite lyrics: Would you bail me out if I needed? / Help me down, would you catch me when I fall?

11: DANCING WITH A WOLF - 9.5/10

This song is an underground roller coaster ride from start to finish, so if you like roller coasters, this song is basically dripping with gold. When I first saw its title, I was put off, though. I've been a big fan of My Chemical Romance's since before I even knew who All Time Low was, and on MCR's "The Black Parade" album, they have a song called House of Wolves. For some reason, a petty, immature part of me automatically assumed I'd hate Dancing With a Wolf because only My Chem can incorporate wolves into their song titles... But whether I liked it or not, this song was going to end up being one of my favorites. It's a bit of a head-banger, kind of reminiscent of Under a Paper Moon during the verses. I personally like the quick cinematic intro that in a sense pulls open the curtains to reveal a super catchy guitar part. Favorite lyrics: So don't you call my name / I will take you down / Should've known that you've been dancing with a wolf.

12: THE EDGE OF TONIGHT - 8/10

This was another one of those songs that Tumblr blew up about; everyone was absolutely loving it, so I had high hopes for it the first time I listened to it. Unfortunately, unlike Cinderblock Garden, it didn't appeal to me as much as I'd have liked it to. Of course, I enjoy the song. There isn't a single track on this album that I don't. The chorus hits you like heat wave from an open oven; Alex's vocals are amazing here. But the verses, lyrics aside, didn't necessarily woo me. So upon listening to it, I felt like I was sitting impatiently through the first minute and a half until I could finally hear the good part, you know? I liked it, and it was strong lyrically, but it's not my favorite. A bit slower than most of the others, as well. Favorite lyrics: You're like a sunray in the dark / You're the beat playing in my heart.

13: OLD SCARS / FUTURE HEARTS - 10/10

Music and tune-wise, this song reminds me a lot of both The Reckless and the Brave and Hello Brooklyn. But lyric-wise, this song is a bit similar to Weightless in some senses. Either way, it's an incredible album closer and is probably the strongest song on the entire album. It makes "Future Hearts" go out with a bang and helps it to leave a lasting impression on everyone who listens to it. It sort of delivers an angrier version of the same message that Kids in the Dark and Runaways gave. Honestly it just sort of makes me want to play an air guitar with it the entire time. Big, big anthem. Favorite lyrics: In the dark there's a light that's calling everyone out / If you could see beyond the walls that you have built.

What were your favorite songs from the album? How about some of your favorite lyrical moments? There are a lot to choose from, so I wouldn't be surprised if you guys can't even answer that. I hope my review persuades someone to check "Future Hearts" out, because you'll all be missing out like crazy if you pass this up! I believe Sugarscape gave the album a 4/5 rating. Since I rate things out of 10, I'm going to go ahead and give the album as a whole a 9.5/10. I just think it's great. Thanks for reading!
