Chapter 10: Larkin Knows
"Hello?" I heard a voice, but simply ignored it. "Hello!?" Called out the voice, this time more demanding. I groaned in protest, realizing that I was sleeping, but decided to succumb to the annoying, nagging voice.
"What?" I snapped, my eyes adjusting to the little light brought forth by the torch hanging in the middle of the man and I. I studied him cautiously, as he gave me a lopsided smile; his white teeth blinding. His raven colored hair reached slightly past his ears, caramel eyes shining with mischief and curiosity. He raised his chained hands up in defense, "No need to get snippy, just trying to start a conversation." His deep, smooth voice spoke with lightness. I glared at him, ignoring the fact I was sleeping and he interrupted me.
"Names Larkin," he pushed, trying to get something out of me. "Nice name," I replied swiftly, not giving him any details about me. "Can't even give me your name?" He asked, eyeing me closely. "Nope, I don't trust easily. Honestly, you could just be working for the stupid King of Hell." I answered. "Well, I wouldn't be here if I was. I am surprised you met Crowley, though. You must be important." I took in the information, trying to figure out if I could use it to my advantage.
"Why are you here?" He wondered, interrupting my thoughts. I sighed, closing my eyes as I leaned my head against the uncomfortable, concrete wall. "None of your business. You?" I asked curiously. "Oh just the usual, finding out things I am not supposed to and all." This caught my attention quickly, as he suddenly piqued my interest. "Like what?" I asked. "Tsk, tsk," he clucked with a shake of his head. "I don't give out too much unless I know something about the other person," he noted.
"My name is Adalyn," I lied swiftly. He waited for me to carry on, "I'm here because I wanted to save people." I whispered honestly. "Well, Adalyn, it is nice to finally know your name. I've learned about a Nephalem, a half angel and demon. She isn't supposed to exist, they say she is gifted from God himself." I froze, but tried to play it cool. "What's her name?" I asked, wondering just how much he knew about me. "Essence, although the rest of the name has been hidden, my suspicion is she is the daughter of Dean Winchester." I took a nice and calm breath, trying to calm down my raging nerves. "What else?" I urged.
"I know much more including her abilities, her past, what she is supposed to do in the future, I've done my studies. Why would you want to know?" He asked cautiously, eyeing me closely. I came up with something quickly, "I met someone named Essence, we were friends for a little bit until she disappeared." He simply nodded. "I've been led to believe she is actually planning to use her abilities for good, that she is kind, yet not quick to trust people." I gulped, praying he didn't suspect me.
"Sounds like her," I covered up. "What are her abilities?" He crossed his arms as he answered my questions. "She will possess demon and angel abilities, she has grace and a soul. Although, she wouldn't be able to possess anyone. She will be able to use telekinesis, added strength, fly, and also heal. She is very powerful, but for now she is only coming into her powers, so she isn't as knowledgeable and strong." He explained, my eyes widened at this new information. "What is she supposed to do with everything? Why are people after her?" The questions spewed out of my mouth before I could stop them, his suspicious gaze told me to tone it down.
"Demons and angels want her to aid them, along with other supernatural beings." My stomach dropped, I was starting to curse my curiosity, but unable to stop myself, I carried on. "Why?" My voice grew hoarse, watching his mouth move, eager to know more. "The Darkness has been unleashed, some are giving up, but most want protection, Essence is the key to it. She is the best hope at stopping it." I decided not to ask further, but he kept going with explanations. "The Darkness herself wants Essence. Would you like to know why?" With a bob of my head, he whispered barely loud enough for me to hear, "Because with Essence on her side, nothing can stop her."
"Wh-Why wouldn't she just kill her?" I stuttered. "That would ruin the fun, now wouldn't it? The Darkness wants everything to be afraid, but she wants people to be scared, she wants them to hold onto the hope that things could work out, if only they could grasp the one thing that makes sure of that. Essence is the key to everything, and if the Darkness can have her on her side, they will be the most powerful, destructive duo ever alive." With the intensity of his eyes, I flicked my eyes to the safety of the ground.
"Wanna know something else, Adalyn?" I looked up to meet his caramel gaze. "You are a terrible liar, Essence." He said as a grin crept onto his face.
Crap.
