Tartarus is a member of the Returners, a rebel group that is created to go against the empire that is conquering the world, alongside Terra Branford, who he has freed, with the both of them, throughout the course of their journey becoming romantic partners to one another, as well as Tartarus helping Terra Branford with learning what to feel, especially the most important emotion of them all...love.

History:

Unlike Terra Branford, who was born from a father Esper and a female human, Tartarus was born from 2 Espers, therefore making him a full Esper. When the emperor known as Gestahl arrived and attacked the Esper World, Tartarus, along with his parents, as well as Terra's mother and the emperor, were sent to the world that Gestahl lived in. Fearing for the love of the baby, they fled as fast as they could, and they hid away from the rest of humankind, while raising Tartarus as best as they can. Force for life in the shadows, Tartarus and his family had to appear only at night, until the 3 Espers manage to find a way to disguise themselves through the use of special chokers that the father had made, which gave them human disguises, allowing them to live amongst the humans. Unfortunately, Gestahlt attacked the village that the entire Esper family were in, and Tartarus was hidden away by then both, as they had all disappeared from his life. And thus, Tartarus would be forced to be all on his own, without his parents accompanying him. He would be out of town, taking off his choker in order to be out of his Esper form, but in town, he would wear the choker, in order to hide amongst the crowd, but would later learn to make a human form without the age of the chokers. And he would practice his magic, becoming more powerful and skilled then before as time goes on, although this became problematic, due to his human disguise condensing his magic and making it burst at times, which leads to some pretty bad consequences for him.

And in time, he became cold, bitter, distant, closing off his heart and pretending he does not care, especially when it involves killing, when in reality, he truly is remorseful and saddened at what he is doing, and wishes that he would be able to end this horrible deed that he is doing, all in the name of survival. But he tries his best not to feel it, and instead, he does all that he can to hold back the screams of pain and anguish inside of him, so that he can truly be effective at what he does, and end the lives that he needs to truly end.

And then, one day, that all changed, when he met Terra Branford, along with Arvis, and they both fought against her, as she was under the control of the emperor, before they were able to successfully free her, but not before getting arrested by the soldiers, and Terra, unfortunately, only knew of her name, but nothing else. Thankfully, Arvis manage to find a way out for Terra and Tartarus,, and while they did get attacked by more of the guards, due to them following all 3 of them inside of the mines, Arvis contacted an ally called Locke, who came out and defeated the guards alongside Tartarus, and it is where both Terra Branford, the Esper/Human Bybrid, and Tartarus, the full-blooded Esper, that they joined the Returners, and it is here that the both of them began to bond. And it is also where Terra would begin to fall in love for the first time with Tartarus himself, and Tartarus, he will finally break out of the shell that he is encasing his own heart in, let out his true self, and he will finally reveal to Terra who he really is like truly.

Appearance:

Tartarus is a male Esper that is disguised as a normal human, being at the age between 17-18. He is slightly short, basically an inch shorter compared to Terra Branford, who is at the height of 5'3, while Tartarus is standing at the height of 5'2, as well as possessing a pale complexion on his skin. He is shown to have purple hair, but it is so dark that it is mistaken as black at rare occasions, with the hair being just as long as Terra Branford'a hair when not in a ponytail, as well as a purple-red eyes, and is said to be handsome by many, even if he is somewhat rugged. He wears a black jacket that has the coattails reach down to his ankles, with one of the sleeves, the right sleeve, completely missing, the left having a zipper, and a hood that can cover the upper part of his face. Over the coat is a dark blue shirt that lacks sleeves that has red lines present going in random directions. He wears dark grey pants that has tears on the knees, and has grey boots. Around his neck is a locket with wings present on the front of the cover.

Personality:

When he was a younger boy, Tartarus is shown to have been shy and kind, her very excited on occasions and tries to be very happy, along with his parents, who loved him very much, and because of this, he is often sheltered about the outside world, but the parents are truthful about what it is like, and thus, while he may not have seen what the world is like, he is very well aware that it is not a safe place, and thus, stays by his family's sides, in order to make sure that he does not get lost in the cruel nature of the world that he is in, especially since he is gone from his home.

But when he lost his parents, due to the actions of the Emperor and his army, Tartarus changed into a shell of who he once was before. In current times, he has become cold, ruthless, and stern, but speaks in a soft spoken and kind tone still, but this is to make himself much more intimidating then before. Constantly trying to be in control of his emotions, he comes of as harsh and uncaring by most, as well as arrogant and prickly, although this is really untrue, for he is not someone such  as that. And when killing anything, even people, he will not bat an eye and will act emotionless at this, making people think that he is truly cruel at his core.

But that is not true. In truth, when people get to know him a bit more, and see why he truly feels, he is shown to be a troubled man filled with nothing but eternal melancholy. He is shown to be constantly tired and saddened at what he is doing, and in very rare occasions, will cry. Deep down, he is still the same person as he once was, even if he is a bit more mature then before, and just wants for the suffering and pain in to end, to finally be free from all that has happened and be done with it, but never could, due to what the emperor has done to him, but will turn his sadness into sternness, so people do not see him as such. And thus, he will come off as intimidating by most.

He also possesses a level of manipulation, for he can hide his real self and fake an emotion, as well as develop a perfect poker face, as well as being harsh in the measures that he does, despite how much it pains him. The slightest grudge, he'll take the most exaggerated response. A permanent solution to a temporary problem. And due to this, he will always know what to say, always dominating the situation anytime he's present, but still maintaining a formal attitude, and is a person that gets straight to the point with no questions asked. He is also very good at reading what a person's emotions are, based not just on the expression of their faces, but based on their body gestures, and thus, will know how a person is truly feeling deep down.

But when he is in the presence of his friends, he will show off his true tired self, and does truly act kind to them, but because of all the horrible stuff that has happened to him, he doesn't even make a simple grin, and admits on occasion that he has forgotten how to truly smile. But that all changed when he interacts with Terra Branford. When interacting with a fellow member of his kin, he slowly became a bite more calmer and lighter in his attitude, and in time, he began to truly smile for the first time in his life. In time, his old self now begins to resurface on occasions, but he will still hide his real self with the cold attitude when in the presence of strangers. But when he is near Terra Branford, he is truly at his happiest, and perhaps...he is feeling more for Terra than what he believes, then what he himself realizes.

Weapons:

Unlike most of his party members, Tartarus does not rely on actual weapons. Instead, he relies on his bare fists, and thus, is a hand-to-hand combat fighter of sorts. He attacks with punching and kicking, grappling or wrestling, and will even infuse Magic into his attacks, just so he can deal a little bit more damage then before. And thus, when he does get a weapon, they are in the form of brass knuckles, due to how they fit his fighting style.

Abilities:

Tartarus, like Terra, has a unique ability called Trance. Unlike Terra, Tartarus' trance is not simply just another form he can take on, rather, it is Tartarus' true form, and thus, has access to the full extent of his magic, as well as the fact that he has access to this power at the start.

When Tartarus is transformed, the damage he deals is multiplied and the magic damage she takes is halved. His ATB gauge is replaced with a green purple that slowly decreases, and when it empties, he automatically uses the Revert command to turn back into his human disguise, but on rare occasions, will stay transformed without a time limit. It is unknown why he decides to change back if he does not have a time limit, although it is believed that he stays in his human disguise due to the fact that his magic is very destructive, and thus limits himself to avoid unintentional damage.

Tartarus' own desperation attack is called Berserk Strike, which increases his stats for a temporary amount of time, and will be able to deal magical damage to a couple of enemies.

Like Terra and Celes, he is able to naturally learn magic without the use of magicite. While Celes learns attack and status spells, and Terra learns healing and attack magic, Tartarus mainly learns attack and defense magic, although he does use some form of healing for himself, with Tartarus mainly also learning thunder spells, comparing it with Terra's use of fire spells and Celes' use of Ice Spells.

Berserk Strike: Tartarus' Desperation Attack in where he channels Magic into his fist and feet, before unleashing a barrage of kicks and punches that overpower and decimate the targets.

Trance/Esper Form: The true form of Tartarus. He resembles a pale humanoid with longer pale hair that turns light red, ears that are similar to that of an elf, a pair of deer antlers on his head, a tail that's similar to that of an imp, with his arms and legs turning a darker red, as well as possessing claws on the fingers and toes. His iris also turn into a blue-purple color with black sclera. When in this form, his attacks are amplified much more then before, and he now uses scratch damage when he uses his hands and feet to attack.

Main Romantic Interest: Terra Branford

Terra Branford, a Half-Esper, and Tartarus, a Full Esper, have a very strong and unique bond. While at first, Tartarus is cold and indifferent, as he spends more time with her, he became more and more warmer to her, and even began to love her to an extent. Terra, in return, never understood love at first, but spending more and more time with Tartarus made her began to feel love, but she did not know what it is, until she and Tartarus saved the orphaned kids, in which she finally understood what love is, especially towards Tartarus, who she wants to be with for the rest of her life. And then, both Tartarus and Terra will began to truly love each other and be with one another for the rest of time.

Notes:

Tartarus is just as strong as Terra, but is a bit more skilled on the use of his powers, due to having gained practice from his parents, and this practiced a bit more on his own, thus the higher level in his magic then Terra.

The reason that magic bursts from him from time to time is due to the fact that he is using his human disguise to suppress his powers, which can lead to small but uncontrollable bursts of magic thar erupts from him. This stops for a little while when he releases his Esper form, in order to unleash the magic he has been suppressing within himself.

His hatred to the Emperor and Kefla is bottomless, and will stop at nothing to make sure that they die for taking away his parents from his hands, as well as make sure that none of them become a threat to the rest of his kind again.

Unlike Terra, he remembers his parents and got a chance to know them a little bit, and is well aware of his own status as an Esper.

If Tartarus were to be married to Terra Branford, he would adopt her surname, as he doesn't possess one.

Tartarus is one of the extremely rare Espers that is not an enemy to the Returners, and is in fact the only Esper that is allies with them.

Even in Esper form, he is still shorter then Terra's.

In this alternate timeline version of Final Fantasy 6, the Esper World remained intact after Kefka's defeat, meaning that the Espers and the magic present did not crease to exist, which allows Tartarus to continue existing so that he is able to stay with Terra.
