9. Leo

The sight of Chase's wolf charging after us sent me into hyperdrive.

Leo is here.

Leo is a wolf.

He lied to me...

Leo is about to be killed.

My thoughts sparked a terror in my mind as I fought against Blake's hold. Chase was getting closer. Damn, that wolf was fast, but I needed to be faster. I couldn't let Leo get hurt whenever all he did was hug me.

He lied to you, Jacks!

He's your friend.

Oh God, the wolf wasn't far. A few more strides and that would be it, Leo would be dead. It would give me a true reason to absolutely hate Chase, but I didn't want to have that reason right now. Not under these circumstances.

Everything seemed to happen in slow motion. I could see the sharp canine teeth ready to rip Leo to shreds, as he stood there with wide eyes. Then, he closed his eyes and seemed to brace himself for the impact.

Was he just accepting death?

I scowled at the thought and flung myself out of Blake's hold. It took all the strength I had in me, but I did it. Spinning myself around, I latched onto Leo. My arms went around his neck and my face smacked painfully against his hard chest.

It was like the world stood still. I could hear several gasps, but it seemed like most people just froze. The air shifted and I let myself have one last thought.

I didn't even get a chance to run.

The sound of my heart beating in my ears almost, almost, covered up the sound of one body impacting with another. It triggered a lot of growls, sending the powerful and threatening sounds through the air.

Leo's hands gripped my waist and pulled me away from him, his wide eyes and goofy smile reminding me of way back when.

"You are actually here," He whispered in disbelief, then his face changed to one of sorrow. "You're the hunter."

I frowned along with him, suddenly not liking that fact. Leo was mine, yet I had been raised to kill him.

I turned towards the constant growling to see Chase in his wolf form, pinned to the ground by Blake and over a dozen other males, some in wolf form. His eyes were pure obsidian and held such menace in them that Leo took multiple strides away from me.

"Alpha," Leo reasoned with a bowed head, "I am sorry for making contact with your Luna."

My mouth fell open at Leo's apology and then my eyes darted to Chase.

Wolf or not, he is so getting yelled at.

"Leo did not have to apologize for anything!" I shouted. Many of the men holding down the angry beast blinked at me, shocked I had yelled at their big bad Alpha.

"Let him go. We need to have a talk," I ordered, causing everyone to hesitate. I agreed whole heartedly with them; what if Chase attacked me? He didn't look exactly happy right now, but I sent him another snarling glare and, soon, his wolf wasn't there at all.

In a second the men were holding down another man, and not a gigantic wolf. The simple matter of it, though, was that Chase was now naked and most of the men immediately jumped away from Chase and bowed their heads.

My angry 'mate' swiftly stood, his large build about to tower over me as he strode closer.

Oh, I'm so going to die.

Chase faltered in his steps and then froze altogether. He got narrowed eyes for just a glimpse before they turned softer. The black emptiness didn't fade back to his usual green, but his expression still looked more patient then a few seconds ago.

My head tilted in wonder. He wasn't attacking me. He wasn't yelling at me. He wasn't killing me.

This Alpha is sick or something.

Chase smiled a little, the tug at one corner of his lips barely noticeable, and began his walk to me again. Whatever was going on in that head of his sure put him through some mood swings.

I blushed when I realized he was naked still, but refused to break eye contact with him. I wasn't happy and I was going to show it.

"Macey," Chase sighed whenever he reached me. We were just a few feet apart from each other and I still managed to keep my gaze focused on his, not on him. "We need to have a talk."

"Put some pants on and we will," I snapped back, my tone far less patient and understanding than his was.

Chase smirked a little and just stood there, not responding to me anymore than that God damned smirk.

However, in a moment, Blake was stepping forwards and handing Chase a pair of light grey sweats. I was thankful he did, but I was still very upset that Blake made no acknowledgment of me.

"Wait," I ordered, grabbing a hold of Blake's forearm before he could walk away. Chase's eyes snapped to where my hand was touching his arm and he growled, low and barely audible, but clearly a warning.

"Stop growling. There is nothing wrong with anything I've done with another male, yet you've almost killed two so far for barely anything!" I recalled, blatantly calling him out in front of his pack and for a purpose. I wanted all the male wolves to hear this, not just their Alpha. Everyone needed to know what was acceptable and what was over the top, borderline possessive.

"Macey, we can discuss this in my office," Chase grumbled, his teeth clenched so tight I thought they might of cracked to pieces.

"No, we are going to discuss this right here, right now." I refused to back down. "Yes, I stood in front of Blake with only a towel on. That was my fault, not his. I was trying to ask for clothing because a certain Alpha hadn't expected me to need any! Why the hell do you think I'm not wearing a bra right now?" Chase growled out again when I said that.

Okay, maybe that comment was unnecessary, but I was on a role and I wasn't stopping.

"Macey Jacks, you better shut-"

"Tell me to shut my mouth. See what happens. C'mon, I dare you," I challenged, scowl set and eyes narrowed. Chase didn't move, hell he barely breathed. He seemed furious, yet scared to do anything that might set me off.

After several moments of silence, I finally spoke again. "You may get jealous, I can't do much about that other than get annoyed. But killing? You say packs and mates are oh-so-loyal despite the fact that I can't do a fucking thing around here because you will kill someone for it. Well, go ahead. Be the monster that I always thought you were."

Chase snarled and let out a roaring growl, snapping his beautiful teeth at me. His hand shot out to grab a hold of me. I surprised myself at my speed of reflexes, stepping out of his reach with my own scowl and standing beside Leo.

I may need to act like the perfect mate to get out of here, but I wasn't going to let Chase treat these people like this.

Chase took in a deep breathe and glared at me, his scowl setting into an intimidating, emotionless face. "Leo, Blake my office, immediately. Macey and I will join you shortly."

The two men bowed their heads and began to walk away. Both of them sent me a cautious, concerned look whenever Chase could not see them. That was all I got before they sprinted away, towards the pack house.

"Look at me." The rough growl had my eyes immediately snapping to catch Chase's gaze. Oh boy, he did not look happy.

"Shall we head to the office?" I suggested, finding it difficult to keep my temper down. I had already blown up once, and how was I supposed to be underestimated if everyone knew how strong I was?

"I want every one to listen!" Chase's voice spread out through the entire field. All the males stood perfectly stoic, and all the wolves seemed tense in their stance.

"This is Macey Jacks. She is your Luna and to be treated as such. Her protection means everything to this pack...and to me!" Chase stopped looking around at everyone and locked eyes with me. My jaw was dropped as I heard his words.

He doesn't give a shit about my protection.

Chase bit down on his lower lip, a small growl escaping his lips. I immediately covered my chest, thinking he was having perverted thoughts.

"Macey, this pack will protect you. My own men attacked me and held me down when I almost hurt you." Chase winced. "That was incredibly stupid of you to jump in front of Jackman like that."

"You were going to kill him!" I screeched once again, a protective feeling overcoming my mind.

"We will discuss this further in my office. Come with me."

I didn't argue after that. I wanted to have a discussion with Chase, and if the only way I would have that was in his office then so be it.

My mind reeled on the walk back. There wasn't a logical explanation for Leo being here. I should have, would have, known if he was a wolf. No way was this sweet hearted boy one of them. He couldn't be and I refused to believe it.

Leo was a man. He had a heart that beat just like mine does. Just as my brother's does. All the warm smiles Leo gave me and the passionate hugs proved this to me.

Leo wasn't a monster like all the rest.

Chase suddenly grabbed my hand and stopped our walking. He had a snarl that he seemed to be trying to suppress.

"Don't we need to get to the office?" I inquired, not liking this sudden interruption.

"Macey, you are really testing my limits today," Chase grunted, gripping my waist and pulling me completely against him. His face nuzzled into my neck and when he breathed against a certain spot, I nearly collapsed.

Take that back. I did collapse.

My knees buckled under me and my arms flung loosely around Chase's shoulders. To my complete embarrassment, a small gasping moan left my lips. Chase growled in return, tightening his hold and taking a couple deep breathes.

"Chase-"

"I know. Just let me calm down and I'll let go," Chase grumbled, sounding very displeased with what I had been about to complain about.

Too fucking bad. This beast needs to get off me.

Chase growled again, unexpectedly, which made me freeze in awareness. He could probably have snapped me in half right then and I was just standing there, completely defenseless.

"Just get on my back." A second after his angry demand, I was flung into Chase's bare back. The muscled skin was tense under me and rough hands kept a strong hold on my thighs. In a flash, we were running.

The trees were a blur around me until they became the walls of the pack house, and soon the walls of Chase's office.

I was put down to stand on the floor but my head was spinning and I stumbled. Whenever my 'mate' reached out to steady me, I jerked away from him and ended up flat on my butt on the floor.

One growling wolf and two chuckling ones had me scowling. "We are in here for a reason. Not to laugh at me," I insisted, standing up on my own and staying stoic in my position. I crossed my arms and kept my feet planted firm on the floor.

"Yes, we are here for a reason," Chase agreed, taking a seat in his desk chair. He folded his fingers together and bit his bottom lip once, his eyes narrowing.

"Highlander," Chase started. I saw Blake sit up straighter and tense up, yet stay completely silent. "You were found in an inappropriate situation with my mate and your Luna. You failed to complete my demands and approached her in the training fields, initiating direct contact-"

"He never touched me!" I blurted out. No matter how calm Chase sounded right now, I figured he was the exact opposite.

Chase completely ignored me, as did Blake. I saw Leo glance at me from the corner of his eye, but that was it.

"As I was saying," Chase continued, "you initiated direct contact with Luna Macey which violated my restrictions on your situation. For that, you are being relieved of your Beta title."

I saw Blake's eyes go wide and his face pale, loosing all it's color. He looked utterly horrified with what Chase had just declared. The color in his eyes were draining and I could see the swirls of black struggling to bring his wolf forwards.

"No!" I shouted. This time, everyone looked to me. "No, you can't do that. Beta is a very important title, and Blake is good at it! You can't do that to him or your pack."

"Macey, I am not happy with you at the moment. If I were you, I would keep your god-damned mouth shut," Chase advised. The hint in his tone led me to believe he added more power to the words.

The second I opened my mouth up again, Chase interrupted me and began talking. This time, the topic was on my old friend.

"Leo Jackman. How the hell do you know my mate?" Chase seemed to be struggling at this point. Something about his voice and posture gave way that he was holding his wolf back, which triggered a panic reflex in me.

Gun. I need my pistol.

Please don't attack.

I'm not prepared.

A low growl came from Chase's throat, which Leo ignored as he began talking.

"Alpha, it's a really complicated story. Maybe we should discuss this another time," Leo suggested nervously. Chase shook his head and began to raise from his seat, leaning over his desk slightly with his hands flat on the surface.

"You will tell me now or you will tell me in the interrogation room," Chase stated, a smirk tugging at his lips.

The sadistic nature in which he looked made me want to run. A shiver ran down my spine and fear crept through me. Red hot anger began to pulse through my veins as well.

The was a beast at his prime. Threatening his pack members and scaring them into telling him everything.

This time, I kept my mouth shut in worry I would make the situation worse.

Leo sighed and nodded, tensing in his chair and sitting in a more professional stance.

Hard to look professional when you're shirtless.

I watched as Chase's knuckles turned white front his grip on the desk's edge. He had no patience at all.

"I knew Macey's brother. I was good friends with him," Leo started. I clenched my own fists, the memories beginning to come back to me as Leo explained the story. Happy memories that I wish I could re-live.

"Kane Jacks. He was a hunter, but I didn't find that out when I first became friends with him. I met him at a high school football game and we became the best of buds."

I remembered Dad asking Kane what he had done throughout the day, asking where he had been. Kane would occasionally lie, saying he had been training at the baseball fields or on a run. He didn't want Dad to know he spent so much time just hanging out with his normal guy friends.

"After a couple weeks, I went over to his house. Macey was there."

That was a lie. I wasn't home whenever they showed up. I came in later, battered and beaten from my year six hunter's training. That's when it all started.

"I thought she was cute."

His exact words were 'Well I don't think I've ever seen an Angel before. Until now.'

"After a couple of visits to the Jacks house I started to spend more of the time with Macey instead of just Kane. We would hang out at a lake..."

We never went to a lake. We would go on runs through the woods.

"A lot of times Kane would leave us alone and go home early."

We would ditch Kane and walk together, holding hands and talking.

"We got to know each other and started dating."

Talking became kissing and kissing became dating.

"That's really it," Leo ended, not seeming phased by the lies he had edited into our story.

Our story.

Did I miss Leo and I's story?

Chase was tensed in his seat and throwing glances from Leo to me, a scowl occasionally tugging at his upper lip. The tension was rolling off of him in waves so intense even I felt it. It was obvious Blake and Leo could feel it too by the way they sat. Nervous and unsure.

"Chase," I spoke up, "Can I speak with Leo? Alone?"

"No," He immediately answered with a gruff and irritated voice. "No, you will not ever be seen alone with Leo from this day on."

"You can't do that!" I argued.

"I can and I am. You are my mate and I will not have you fraternizing with any man from this pack, let alone one you have a history with." Chase seemed dead set on keeping this rule, but I was stubborn.

"I won't be fraternizing with him or anyone! I just have some questions I want answered," I pleaded.

"You can ask him in my presence," Chase reasoned.

Damn wolf, I need to talk to Leo!

Taking a low blow, I let out a deep breathe. "He's the only one of you that I'm not scared of."

The entire room froze over and everyone was silent. Chase's eyes were locked on me, but they got a strange look to them.

"You are scared of me?" He asked. I only shrugged, giving a small nod.

"Please, he's my only friend," I added. Chase seemed to think my words over before slowly nodding.

"Okay. You stay in this office though. You have ten minutes before I come back from the fields," Chase told me.

An ear splitting grin took over my face as I nodded in understanding. Chase and Blake both stood up, Chase taking a moment to kiss the top of my head, before walking out.

"You lied to me."
