4. Two New 'Friends'

Chase began by taking me on a tour of what he called the 'Pack House.' Apparently, his pack had as many as 177 werewolves in it. Most families had their own houses around the area, but the high ranking wolves, their families, and some unruly teenagers lived in the pack house.

Upon my asking, Chase informed me that the high ranking wolves consisted mainly of three wolves. The Alpha, the beta, and the third in command/head warrior.

Of course, Chase was the Alpha. Blake was apparently the beta. The third in command was a man named Leo, who looked after training and helped lead the wolves into battle along side Chase.

I forced myself to remember all the names, deciding I would also have to get on the good side of all of those mentioned as high ranking beasts. It would be necessary for me to know everything possible in order to hightail it out of this place.

Whenever I heard that Chase led a pack of 177 monsters, the nerves set it. I was going to have to escape from wherever-the-hell-I-was with the risk of 177 wolves on my ass? This would be a chore, but I promised myself I would find a way.

"Alpha Chase! Who's this?" Yet another teenage girl came striding up to Chase and I, frowning slightly at the sight of me by Chase's side.

"Not another," I grumbled under my breathe. Honestly, there was a slight irritation with how many girls Chase attracted to his side. The count seemed endless- when really this is only the 4th girl- and all the attention seemed to please Chase's pride.

Chase chuckled, glancing down at me. He may have thought I was jealous of all the girls swooning after him, but he could think again! The mere thought of me staking my claim on this chunk of meat was sickening to me. After so long of seeing his kind kill and maim the innocent, I could never swoon after one of them.

I had already stopped Chase and asked him not to introduce me as his mate, using the excuse that I needed more time to get used to everything before we spread the word. This happened when the first red head came prancing up and demanded to know who I was to be walking with the Alpha.

"This is a friend. Her name is Macey," Chase announced to this particular blonde. She was pretty, and seemed kind.

If only she wasn't trying to flirt with Chase.

Not that she can't. Not a problem with me. She can have him.

Honestly, how stupid were these wolves? I had the scent of the hunter this pack was trying to kill. Had no one noticed it yet? Hasn't a single one of these beasts realized the threat I was-am- to them?

"Oh. Hi, Macey. My name is Penelope. How do you know-"

"Alpha! Alpha, she's here! Her scent..." The man who had came sprinting up to our group suddenly halted. He scowled at my presence, crouching down in a threatening stance.

The attack stance.

"What is she doing with you, Alpha?" The monster growled, his black hair slightly falling into his now black eyes.

Were all male wolves so handsome?

"Stand down, pup," Chase warned, stepping up to the boy and nudging me behind his frame. I took an extra step away from him, not liking the attractive tingles that shot up my arm where his hand had touched.

"Alpha, she's the one we hunted. She's the hunter!" His voice was confused, frightened, yet angry. He should have submitted to his Alpha, but was questioning my presence. Smart.

"Hunter?" Penelope gasped, jumping away from me and looking at me with wide eyes.

"Keep your voices down!" Chase grunted, obviously thinking over the situation. It was only a matter of time before others realized I was here.

"She is not to be harmed. I want you both to promise me that you will watch after her," Chase demanded. Penelope nodded quickly, no matter the fear evident in her features. "Mark?"

Oh, so that his name.

"Yes, Alpha," Mark grumbled, coming out of his stance and eyeing me. "Her scent is a dead giveaway. All the men who were involved in the mission will recognize her in seconds."

"I know. Find a way to cover it for now. Effectively immediately, I am calling all trackers and warriors to a meeting to discuss this issue," Chase decided.

"Issue?!" I couldn't help but be offended by that comment. I was a simple human being! Not a genetic freak like these things, and I'm the issue?

Chase sighed and shook his head. "I didn't mean it like that. Mark, you are excused from this meeting to help Penelope watch after your future Luna."

"Luna?" Three confused voices all spoke at once. Mark's tone, however, still had a slight anger to it.

"Alpha, I do not agree with Penelope helping to watch after this...human. She is a female and hasn't been trained," Mark announced.

"Macey will not attack either of you. She is my responsibility and I can assure you that everything will be fine for this time period." Chase's tone was getting harder, his teeth clamping together.

"But Alpha, I can constrain her myself. We don't need to put Penelope in harms-"

"You will not be alone in a room with my mate. Get that thought out of your head now!" The finality told us all not to make another sound, only for us to obey his word.

Stupid me and my big mouth, had different plans.

"Like I would want to be alone in a room with him anyways," I commented, not even bothering to put it under my breathe.

Macey, remember, you are supposed to be scared. Act weak and frightened, let them underestimate you.

Mark growled and instead of raising a fist, I whimpered, stepping back and widening my eyes.

"I'm leaving now before I tear a pack members head off," Chase snapped, directing his words towards Mark. He then faced me. "They won't hurt you. You'll be safe, I promise."

Yeah, I was so scared.

I only nodded, faking a small smile. Chase smiled back and reached out to brush a strand of my hair from my eyes.

Flinching back, I gasped in fake terror, clenching my eyes shut for a mere second. When I opened them, Chase wore a pained expression, only taking another beat to mask it and walk away with a stern order for me to be protected.

"Let's go, hunter," Mark ordered, gripping my upper arm and yanking me down a couple hallways. He looked around corners and pretty much covered my body so any wolves walking by wouldn't pay me any attention.

"I thought any wolves who could track my scent were in the meeting," I mumbled up to Mark as he pulled us down another hallway. Penelope walked just behind me, keeping her head slightly down.

"No. Some of the females know of it from it lingering on their mates and smelling it when in town," Mark corrected me. "C'mon, just a couple doors down here."

I thought about how much Mark seemed to despise me, yet how hard he was working anytime certain females walked by. He made sure I touched nothing so I wouldn't leave a trace. Mark was definitely loyal to his Alpha.

If they all weren't beasts and unnatural creatures that killed and kidnapped innocent humans, maybe I would have gained respect for them.

"Shit." Mark stopped quickly and spun around, pressing me into the wall and covering my body with his.

"What are you doing?" I kept the anger in and let it out as another whimper, hating the feeling of his body on mine.

Damn, Chase had to leave me with a hormonal one.

"Pen, go distract Jenny. Make sure she passes by without noticing Macey," Mark barked, putting his forearms against the wall by my head. He shifted so his body covered all of mine from view while Penelope rushed forwards to the woman walking down the hall, right towards us.

"Don't say a thing. Just smile at me when she walks by and ignore her," Mark whispered in such a hushed tone I could barely hear him. I only nodded my head.

Penelope and 'Jenny' walked closer, Penelope's voice slightly higher in panic. Her voice was louder though, as she made sure to take up all of Jenny's attention with whatever she was saying

For some reason, my body was shaking and I felt nervous. Petrified, even. I didn't know why this woman specifically couldn't know I was here, but the fact that Mark was taking such serious precautions to hide me worried me. What would happen if I was caught right now?

In just moments, the two girls had walked by Mark and I. The only attention we had gained from Jenny was a confused glance, which Mark quickly avoided by grumbling out, "So tonight. Can't wait, princess."

I wanted to scowl at the nickname, but when Jenny quickly looked away with a knowing chuckle, my body sagged in relief.

"Hurry." Mark snatched my wrist and yanked me at too fast of a speed down the hallway. The force of him yanking us to a stop and then swiftly tugging me into a bedroom had my wrist aching.

The moment we were behind a closed door, I pulled away from Mark and rubbed my wrist, glaring daggers at the back of his head. If he hadn't just saved me from possible discovery, then I would have had the urge to attack him at this moment.

Mark didn't keep his back to me for long, turning to face me and letting out a deep breathe. His eyes were still narrowed at me, with good reason.

I'm a hunter, he is smart to doubt me.

"Why was hiding me from that wolf so important?" I refused to speak her name out loud, not wanting to give any of them the satisfaction of such a mundane thing as a name.

"She's the one who originally found your scent and alerted our pack about you," Mark answered, not missing a beat.

I figured if I had any questions, Mark would probably be the one to ask. He did seem to hate me, but he also seemed like he wouldn't sugarcoat things.

And now I know who I will get most of my information from.

"Oh," Is all I mumbled. Keeping up this act that I didn't hate their kind and that I wasn't planning on running. It was annoying to pretend I was scared of them.

Penelope was soon stepping into the room, closing and locking the door behind her. "She didn't suspect a thing. But she does think you guys are doing some naughty things later," She giggled slightly and shook her head. Mark and I both growled at the thought, yet his growl was a lot more animalistic than mine.

Penelope went from smiling and giggling to shy and lowering her head. She played with a strand of hair that was falling into her eyes.

"How long until Chase is finished?" I asked, adding a longing tone as if I was missing my so called 'mate.'

"Depends on how some of the warriors and trackers take to the news that a hunter is the new Luna," Penelope answered quietly.

"Yeah. Some of them could be plotting your death right now or even threatening you straight to Alpha Chase," Mark added with a small chuckle.

Penelope gasped, her eyes snapping to Mark's. "Mark! Don't listen to him, Macey...I mean Luna, everything will be okay!"

Mark rolled his eyes while I held in a laugh. "Call me Macey," I assured her. This scared little wolf wouldn't last a second in a fight.

"You didn't kill any of their mates though, so they shouldn't take it too hard," Mark trailed off a bit, narrowing his eyes. "In fact, you only killed two of our pack members."

"Mark, are you sure the Alpha would be okay with you telling her these things?" Penelope tried to whisper, passing me a nervous glance before looking back to Mark.

He completely ignored her, flicking his black hair back out of his face and stepping towards me. "Those two were trouble makers. No body really liked them and it was rumored they were going rouge soon. Possibly even attacking the Alpha as treason. How much do you know about our kind, exactly? How much do you know about our pack?"

The threatening tone to Mark's voice told me he had many accusation ready to throw my way. Again, I quickly backed away and held fearful eyes.

Mark let out a growl and his eyes darkened, leading Penelope to watch us with wide eyes, like she didn't know what to do if Mark attacked.

Bring it on, pup.
