11. Chasing Is In The Name
I had to keep my pace quick in order to stay with Mark. He had long and fast strides that seemed to just accommodate his closed off demeanor.
We were halfway to the fields and I actually found myself getting nervous. My hands were getting clammy and my stomach had butterflies fighting a battle after just one thought passed through my head.
I'm about to see Chase.
That one thought kept repeating in my head and I couldn't get the damn thing to go away. A wave of irritation swept through me and I put a permanent scowl on my face. These feelings weren't meant for Chase so I wasn't going to allow them to be there. I would deny them at all cost.
As Mark and I stepped into the clearing that opened into the fields, another wave of butterflies hit me.
Chase.
Deepening my scowl, I forced my eyes off of the stupid Alpha's bare back and kept my head held high. Mark led me forwards, sending an amused glance my way. If he thought I couldn't do this, he could think again.
Something must have tipped Chase off that we were behind him because he took his attention off the unending line of men to look behind him.
I could feel his eyes on me, and everyone else's as well, but my line of vision landed on one male.
Leo.
I felt as if I had been punched in the gut when I saw him on his knees, his head bowed and panting heavily beside Chase. There was an unattended gash on his forehead and another on his chest. They were both bleeding heavily.
Ignoring my mission, I immediately ran towards Leo. Not once did I slow down as I ran halfway across the fields, only for Chase to shoot an arm out to stop me. I skidded to a stop just before we came in contact.
"If you dare touch me it better be with every intention to make me hate you, otherwise get out of my way," I ordered. I barely recognized my own voice for it was so cold and filled with anger. It sent an unsettling feeling through me and I wanted to puke.
Chase visibly gulped before lifting his head up and then stepping out of my way.
I immediately dropped in front of Leo and took his face into my hands, looking over the cut skin.
"Macey," Leo mumbled, his eyes drifting open to look at me. He give a forced smile before letting it drop again. "What are you doing here?" His words were slurred and hard to hear but I forced my mind to keep up with them.
"You need medical attention," I stated the obvious, still trying to ignore the large amount of eyes all staring at me. "Leo..." I didn't know what to say. He was loosing too much blood to heal and I was the only one trying to help him.
"Blake," I shot up, my eyes finding him standing on Chase's other side. "Blake, please help me get him to the house."
"Move and you have the same fate," Chase snapped when Blake took a step forwards. He froze and looked at me with apologetic eyes.
"Fine," I snapped. I grabbed the bottom of the shirt I was wearing and tore it until half of my stomach was exposed.
"Macey!" Chase grabbed my arm and hauled me up from the ground with such ease it was like I weighed a pound. I didn't get a spare second to press the cloth against Leo's injuries to stop the bleeding. "Are you trying to test my limits?"
"No. I'm trying to save a friend who you hurt." My attitude had Chase freezing and he clenched his eyes shut.
"I'll have him attended to," He whispered to me. A second later five men stepped out of their line and rushed towards Leo. Chase pulled me out of the way and made sure to stand in the line of sight of most men and me, which seemed unnecessary as none of them dared spare me a glance now.
"Leo didn't deserve to lose his Third In Command title," I stated.
"His past with you-"
"Has nothing to do with his place in this pack," I interrupted. "He kept his distance when we talked. He told me that I was yours now and that he respected that."
Maybe that wasn't fully true, but I wasn't going to reveal that now. A little flash of guilt started to burn at lying to the man in front of me, but I quickly shut out the feeling. No guilt should be felt on my part for anything I've done. My life with Leo was in no way Chase's business and the unreasonable Alpha would just have to realize that.
"Chase, you cannot treat your men like this just because you found your mate. It isn't right and you shouldn't act this way as their Alpha."
The fields were completely silent except for the bugs and birds chirping. The rage in Chase's eyes became so prominent but I swear he was starting to break. I wasn't wrong in this situation and he knew it. As the silence went on for several moments my nerves began to raise. All eyes were now on Chase and me.
"Leo is keeping his title, as Blake got to keep his," I ordered, not breaking our eye contact. I couldn't. His eyes were hypnotizing. Green had been drifting into black, then back to green, but now they were stuck in between. They were just a swirl of colors that stayed locked with my gaze.
Beautiful.
Chase's chest rumbled in a low growl that should have snapped me out of my trance, but it only pulled me in deeper.
I wasn't sure how they knew they could, or should, all leave but in a second I saw blurs going straight past Chase and I. The men had shifted and were gone.
However, I'm sad to say that the sudden movement of all the wolves startled me. My instincts went on high alert and I tensed.
Get out. Abort mission. Run.
Chase tensed as well and I felt him step closer to me.
Run. Run, he's an Alpha. You can't take an Alpha.
I can handle an Alpha.
You aren't armed.
Don't hurt him.
My thoughts were so conflicted, running rampant in my mind. I could barely think straight. Everything was beginning to flood over me, it seemed.
"Macey, don't overthink it." The tone of his voice only scared me more. Throughout my body I got a calming feeling yet my mind was just a mess. I should not be calm around him. He should not be able to make me feel this way.
Warmth and tingles shot up my arm and my eyes took a quick glance to see he was touching me. I looked back at him. He hadn't moved.
"I'm not going to hurt you." More tingles. His other hand was on my other arm.
Get to Kane. Get Leo and run.
A sharp growl echoed throughout the clearing and that's when my mind went haywire. Jumping away, I ripped my arms from its claws. I didn't waste a minute before tackling the beast to the ground and sending a punch straight to its jaw. Pain and shocks ran up my arm and I felt as if my own jaw had been punched.
The initial panic of the strange, uninflected pain on myself wore off. However, I was still in fight or flight mode and I wasn't backing down. The wolf hadn't shifted yet and I wasn't in the least bit prepared for when it did.
"Macey!" It shouted my name and I turned away from it, sprinting towards the woods.
Get away. Get away, get away, you can't do this right now.
I was vaguely aware of the shouting and pounding of footsteps coming from behind me. My death was chasing me but I wasn't going to get caught.
You already got caught once, don't fall prey again.
The shouting continued and I hoped that it used up the wolf's energy and slowed him down. Otherwise, he would have surely gotten me. Wind howled around my ears from the speed of my running. The thumping of my feet on the ground was loud and I knew I wasn't using the best form. My heart was in my stomach and my tongue was caught in my throat but I refused to slow down. Slowing down would mean I would be caught and being caught meant my life was wasted.
You have no life outside of hunting.
The thought was snarky but I pushed it away. Besides, the years of training and having no life after Leo sure paid off in this moment as I outran death and found my way up a tree. I climbed branch after branch, scraping my elbow and forearm in my rush but ignoring the slight sting. The callouses on my hands from all my hard work were put to the test from how rapid and rough my movements were against the tree bark.
"Macey, I will climb that tree! Come down!"
I was at least 30 feet in the air, damn tall tree, when I stopped and looked down. Chase. Chase was standing there, no shirt on and sweat glistening on his chest.
Get your mind out of the fucking gutter.
The panic settled down an ounce and I took a breathe. The air was hot and sticky, making me uncomfortable and making my breathe just make me feel even more so.
Swinging a leg over the somewhat sturdy branch beside me, I faced the tree trunk and leaned my forehead against it. My hands gripping the tree gave me extra assurance that I wasn't going to fall.
"Let me go," I spoke, closing my eyes in my time of relaxing. Well, as close to relaxing as I was going to get.
"You know I can't do that. Come down from there." The frustration in Chase's voice was so evident that I wanted to smirk.
"You know I can't do that," I mocked, refusing to move from my spot in my tree.
"Fine." I heard a short grunt and looked down to see the stubborn beast had began to climb up the first branch.
"Climb up here and I'll jump," I threatened, lifting my leg in a way to prove my point. Chase froze and glared at me, a fresh scowl coming to his lips.
"Jump and I'll catch you," Chase retorted, catching my by surprise. I sighed and shook my head, resting it back on the tree.
Guess I was going to have to play the mate card.
"Please. I'm scared, just leave me alone." I resigned, making sure that even Chase could hear the desperation in my voice. Going back to a pack house full of wolves did not sound appealing at the moment. I was still a little freaked out at the past events, with hundreds of wolves running straight past me and the chase I had just participated in.
"I didn't mean to scare you, Macey," Chase insisted. He was back on the ground now, which I was thankful for.
"You didn't have to chase after me," I stated, thinking how easy it would have been if he just let me run.
"I had to. It's kind of in my name." Amusement coated his words and a laugh escaped my lips. It was short and I cut it off before I could laugh anymore, but by the full blown grin on Chase's face I knew he was satisfied with just that.
I dropped the smile from my face and shook my head, resting back against my tree.
C'mon, Macey. Gain their trust. Make them like you. Make them fall to your feet. It will make it so much easier to run.
"You said you would catch me," I muttered, knowing my voice was barely above a whisper.
Chase gained a confused expression, taking his lower lip between his teeth for half a second. "Of course I will."
Taking a deep breathe, I searched and found that there was a clear path straight down to Chase, no branches standing directly in the way.
That was lucky.
"Please don't drop me." I barely heard my own voice as I slipped off the branch and fell through the air.
"Macey!" His shout came but not even two seconds later I was surrounded by more warmth and tingles that ran throughout my veins. His breathe hit my face and I found it strangely pleasant.
"You caught me," I stated, refusing to open my eyes that I hadn't realized I shut.
Chase chuckled and it slightly shook my body. I liked it.
"You are a complete lunatic," Chase laughed out. I opened my eyes to see him smiling at me and shaking his head. "I told you I would."
Make him fall at your feet. Make him love you.
"I knew you would." I lied. "I trust you." Another lie.
I expected a cheerful Chase at my words but he only frowned and clenched his eyes shut, opening them but refusing to look at me. They were almost black again.
"I'll take you back to the pack house," He said. There was practically no emotion in his voice. He was distant and I sighed, not liking this at all. The thought that he wasn't happy just kind of made me nervous. Pushing my hand against his chest, I tried to set my feet on the ground. "No."
"Don't growl at me! Put me down," I ordered. Chase froze, his entire body tensing before he started drifting his eyes across the field.
"There's a rogue here." He snarled. His eyes were completely black by this point and he held me tighter against his body, his arm that was holding my back up becoming tight enough that my face practically pressed into his neck.
"Chase, it's okay. I can take care of myself and you're here," I assured him, again trying to get my feet on the ground. I really didn't feel in control with danger so close and not even being able to defend myself.
"Blake," Chase snarled, nodding his head once as he spun around in a quick 180. My hand shot out and grabbed a hold of Chase's shoulder to steady myself. "Blake is chasing it."
I heard a growl from the woods and a pained yelp. One more growl and then heavy feet thudding closer.
Suddenly, my feet were on the ground and Chase was standing in front of me, his body slightly squatted down in an attack position. "Do not try to help, Macey. If I tell you to run, then run."
"What, can't you handle a little rogue yourself?" I teased. Chase growled shortly and grabbed a hold of my wrist.
"Of course I can," Chase assured me, "I'm more worried about my own wolf."
Before I could respond, a wolf shot out from the trees, seeming to be headed straight for us. It seemed pretty obvious to me that this wolf was a girl. It's features just seemed so feminine, even if it was supposed to be a killing beast. Her fur was practically golden.
She looks like a golden retriever.
Chase stood up straight, looking intimidating even from the back when the rogue neared us. She skidded to a stop and then turned back, only for a dull black wolf to be blocking her way.
Blake.
A growl escaped Chase's chest and he grabbed my wrist once again, pulling me out of the rogue's sight.
"Kill her," Chase ordered. Blake let out an angry growl, snapping his jaws at Chase. This seemed to anger Chase as he took a furious step towards them, letting me see everything that was happening once again.
The wolf jumped to the rogue's side, still blocking her from running back but defending her against Chase.
"God damn," Chase grumbled, running a hand through his hair.
"What?" Here I was completely clueless as to what was going on. Was the black wolf Blake? If so, why in the hell was he defending a 'rogue' against his Alpha? Even I knew that wasn't okay.
"She's Blake's mate," Chase stated, shaking his head. "This is going to be infuriating."
"Why?" Yeah, why couldn't I just keep my mouth shut for once.
"Infuriating?" I snapped my gaze away from Chase and to the short, unclothed girl that now stood in place of the golden retriever looking wolf. "What's infuriating is being chased even further into pack lands when I was just trying to leave!"
The annoyed tone to her voice made me want to laugh. This girl was a wolf? She seemed as harmless as Penelope, except with more spunk to her attitude.
The black wolf growled and jumped in front of the girl, blocking her body completely from our view. The girl seemed to take that as her chance when I saw her turn and sprint like hell's fire was on her ass. Another laugh escaped my mouth and Chase's sent me an annoyed glance while Blake easily blocked the rogue from leaving again.
"Oh god fuck it," She cursed, turning back to us, "Hey, can I at least get some clothes if I'm gonna be trapped here?"
"Of course. You will be staying here as our Beta female as it is, so I suggest you learn to keep your cursing under control," Chase explained, looking calm now as he understands what is going on. However, the look on this girl's face was anything but calm.
"I will under no circumstances be a Beta female, and I will definitely fucking not control my god damn language just because a dominant jerk off Alpha told me to." The defiant glare on the 19 or so girl's face was amazing.
"I think I like this girl," I teased, nudging Chase in the side and earning another glare.
"Are you rejecting me?" All eyes shifted to Blake, who was now in his birthday suit, his only focus on the rogue. "You said you won't be my Beta female."
Chase growled and covered my eyes, only for me to slap his hand away and focus back on the situation before me. The look in Blake's eyes was absolutely heart breaking. He looked as if his world was crushed and ending; like he just didn't know how to function anymore.
The girl's eyes were wide, staring straight at Blake and doing a double take of his entire body. A blush crawled onto her cheeks and she snapped her eyes back up to his face. Even then, she seemed mesmerized.
"God, I scored a totally hot mate."
