Chapter 5
Jace sat next to Harry who had his face buried in his hands. Jace couldn't describe it. They buried Landon. He hadn't even done anything too bad. He felt a mess of emotions, and an abundance of each. And though he couldn't describe it, terrible was close enough for now.
Camri sat next to Ashley and leaned on her shoulder. Ashley felt bad for her. As she brushed a bit of Camri's bushy hair out of the way, she looked at Harry. They didn't know each other well at all, but they shared something in common. They both cared about Camri. And right now, she was worried about her. Harry looked back and shared her worried expression, seeing how much she reacted.
Ash rubbed his face with his hands. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He even got up to change his position. He felt bad. Nothing could change that. The group sat in silence. They remained like that for awhile.
"Okay, what the hell. Someone has to break the silence to remind y'all that we have limited time here, so let's pick up the pace! I thought you guys would be more sensible after everythin', but I guess not," Veronica stated, waking Camri up who was resting on Ashley's shoulder. Everyone was a bit confused about her very slight accent. She was from Alabama and her parents were from Texas and Mississippi, so when she was really pissed her accent came out. She didn't even think she still had it. Yet, there it was. Whatever. She was a sort of Victorian-city girl combo now. If those can even fit together in one person.
Celina rubbed her eyes. She was honestly out of it. There was no way she could bring herself to say anything and she was tired. Everything seemed to fall apart. Before this she was stuck in a box, which sounds funny and stupid. Not-so-funny when you are in there for 2 hours. Oh, and also the only thing stupid about that is how long it took for her "friends" to find her.
Bunch of asses.
However some others were still gaping at Veronica. Like Irene. Not only because she had an accent, but because she broke the silence. She didn't think anyone had expected that. But to be honest, what did she even expect? Them to sit in silence forever? Or at least till the witching hour. Crap. The witching hour. How were they even going to get out? Follow the clues? She didn't know of any at the moment, so she chimed in.
"Limited time to do what? We don't have any clues. And also, we should not blame each other. I mean, I get it. Nobody else is here. But after what just happened," she felt a wave of guilt,"we never know. Maybe someone or something else killed Loretta and led to the death of Landon."
"Ruby," Harry amended her statement quietly.
"Huh?" Irene said.
"You forgot Ruby."
"Whatever, now as I was sa-"
"Not whatever. Ruby is dead thanks to some idiot who would vote a girl who was just as innocent as the rest of us into a death challenge. Well, most of us," His expression darkened as he looked at Irene and Veronica who was not looking at Harry.
"So this is my fault now," Irene chuckled sarcastically.
"Harry," Jace said calmly, trying to calm him down. He looked very tense and mad after something like that. I mean, Harry lost his friend, but still, Irene just messed up with her words. We all screwup sometimes. Some major even.
"What!" Harry yelled. Jace looked offended and upset, so Harry stepped in and said he was sorry, because he didn't mean it to be mean. Jace smiled.
"How about we get back to the important things, like I don't know, getting out of here!" Irene snapped.
"Well who is up for searching then?" Teddy said. He surprised everyone because he had not said anything since he thanked them for saving him.
"I don't know about you guys, but I am tired," Camri said yawning.
"It's only like 11:45 what did you expect?" Veronica remarked.
"How about whoever is tired, can stay here--it is not like they will be of much help tired--and the rest of us can look for clues as to what to do next or how to get out? We only need a few people after all," Ash suggested ignoring Veronica.
"Sure," Harry agreed calming down.
Celina and Camri were the ones who stayed. Harry agreed to watch over them in case one of them fell asleep and sat next to Camri in the corner. Celina went out like a light and Camri was sitting with her head on a pillow. She couldn't sleep. She was too afraid of what would happen when she woke up. Or worse, when she was asleep! So she sat up. Harry, sitting a few feet away from her, noticed immediately.
"You ok?" He put his hand on her arm.
"Yeah, just can't sleep," She responded drowsyly. He looked down at his shoes. He was wearing vintage non-lace shoes.
"You tired?" Camri asked. Harry responded with a shrug. "I am."
"Yeah, figured."
"Right." She held her knees against her chest. She put her black hair behind her ear and yawned again.
"You should get some sleep," Harry said. She nodded and grabbed her pillow. She curled up next to Harry and slept, suddenly less aware of her terrible situation. The world came down to her and the boy fighting sleep next to her.

"Well, I guess now that we know who the tough ones are, let's look," Veronica said.
"They were just tired, Veronica," Ashley fired back annoyed. Camri was one of the people Veronica was aiming at with her statement after all.
"It's life or death at this point," Ash answered before Veronica could say anything.
"Still, Camri is nice. And Harry is looking after them." Ashley retorted. Irene scoffed. Nice. Was she serious?
"Well if she's nice then it's fine she hasn't done anything! And how do we know Harry just stayed behind to not get involved in this," Irene said.
"Camri found the bracelet and Harry has been helpful," Jace said growing madder.
"Celina and Camri are just missing out on a chance to help out and prove themselves," Ash said to Jace," Me, you, Ashley, Veronica, Irene, and-what is your name?"
"Teddy. How do you not know that by now?" Teddy deadpaned though he didn't really care.
"Right, we might get out, them, maybe not," Ash finished.
"You think they are useless? You are the one bickering instead of searching for clues or something helpful so we can escape this place!" Teddy sent an outburst of sudden energy throughout the group. They all looked at him in surprise. He hardly talked. Ever.
"Ok then. I repeat. Let's look," Veronica said dryly.

"Guys!" Ash screamed "I found something! It's stuck though." Everyone rushed over.
"What is it?
"How is it stuck?"
"Is that a box?"
Questions seemed to flow in from all directions. They had made their way to the tiny, fenced in backyard. Around the place they-- buried Landon. They pulled and pulled till it came out. It had a combination of 1 number. To find it they answer a riddle. The directions were on the box.
"I'll get the others," Jace said. Running into the house. He came back with Celina, Camri, and Harry.
"Okay here is the first one;
12=6
6=3
5=4
8=?" Veronica read to the group.
"Well, 6 is half of 12, and 3 is half of 6, so 4?" Celina said.
"No, the 5=4 makes no sense," Harry responded. Irene counted on her fingers and spoke up about what she thought the answer could be;
"Spell it out! F-I-V-E has 4 letters, S-I-X has 3, and T-W-E-L-V-E has six! Then that means eight has--five!" Irene was very impressed with herself and wore a smug expression. It worked. Veronica high fived her.
Inside was a big pastry. To Veronica it looked like one of those cream puffs that had something in it. So without thinking, She bit down on it. She tasted paper. She pulled it out and read it while the group was still in shock. She has that effect on people.
Two girls must go into undertake a challenge, and one of them will be directly responsible for the other's death. Chose wisely. Only one is getting out this time. Look on the back for where it is.
They voted. It was time to draw. Teddy reached in.
"Irene" Ashley felt a sob of guilt coming on but hid it. She voted her in. Irene grabbed her card and
looked at it.
"And Ashley" Ashley couldn't take it anymore and started balling. They looked on the back.
Go into the playroom. The non-players will sit behind the fence. If anyone interferes, everyone dies.
"That's cheery," Harry muttered. Everyone else looked like they would agree but were either frozen or speechless. Irene tossed her card behind her, not looking back. Veronica led the way to the playroom. As she opened the door she said;
"What. The. Hell. This room changed." There were two chests on the left and right side, and a fence with a gate that was open.
"Why did it need to be girls?" Irene said. Nobody answered since it was a rhetorical question. The boys and girls who were not playing got behind the fence and sat afraid of the outcome. However Veronica and Camri stayed to hug Irene and Ashley. Then, once they came into the arena thing, they each opened a chest. To Ashley's horror, they contained a sword and a dagger. She reluctantly picked it up and saw Irene had them in her hand. A voice ran through the room.
"Fight to the death. No backing out. Start in five, four," Irene got in a battle stance, Ashley imitated her motions. "Three, two," Ashley took a deep breath. "One"
Everything went silent. Ashley couldn't hear Irene's grunts as she swung her sword aimed for her head. Ashley quickly dodged it and kicked Irene in the shin. While Irene was recovering, She hit her with the back of her dagger. She was stalling. She didn't want to kill anyone.
Irene fell to the ground and yelped, her forehead was swelling but she got up anyway and pinned Ashley against the wall. Camri was crying her eyes out and Jace covered her eyes as Harry had his arms around her.
Irene punched her a few times as if she forgot about her sword, but once she remembered, she reached for it. Ashley but her foot on it and struck her across the face. Now Irene was very cut up and bruised but she didn't care. She picked her sword up and cut Ashley's cheek. She gasped and held the wound. It was bleeding badly and dripped down her face. This time she hit Irene so hard she almost was knocked out. Or she was. Veronica looked really sad.
Jace's hand fell off of Camri's eyes. She smiled at Ashley. Ashley smiled back at her. She was so happy. And so, so proud of herself. But one thing remained to be done. She held her sword tight in her hand, feeling guilty. She put that aside. But once she turned around, a dagger flew from Irene's hand. It landed in her stomach. Blood stained her shirt. Camri screamed and ran over pushing away Harry's arms. He followed her anyways.
"Ashley please, please please please please please please please" Camri whispered to her friend lying on the ground. Ashley smiled at her and looked over to Harry.
"I'll say hi to Ruby for you."
"No, god no," Harry said, "But Camri, she-"
"Don't let her die," Ashley said as the life drained from her eyes.
