SIXTEEN - MARELLA
Two periwinkle eyes, and a mop of strawberry-blonde hair claimed my dreams. After telling Dex that I liked him, I kind of let it be a thing in my head. I just couldn't stop thinking about him. Everything I loved about him, his funny little quirks, his dazzling smile, his positive attitude. And as I thought about him, I started to feel self-conscious. Did he think I was weird? Did he like me? Wouldn't that be embarrassing if I went on with the impression that he liked me. I knew he had had some sort of crush on Sophie, but I wasn't sure if that was over. I pondered over everything that had happened over the past few days. Had he liked me all along? Or had he just realized his feelings for me, as I had? What was he thinking about right now?
I awoke to the sound of a beeping sound. I dimly heard Dex groaning. I sat up quickly, and tapped the top of the alarm clock, rendering it silent.
"We have to go." The woman at the front desk had told us that checkout time was eleven, and the complimentary breakfast ended at ten. It was 9:45.
I shook Dex awake. He mumbled something, before sitting up.
"Good morning," he said groggily.
"I think we have to go eat breakfast."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm coming, you go on down." I had the feeling that if I left him here, he would go back to sleep, so I told him, "I can wait for you." I smiled sweetly, and he grinned.
"Rather insistent, are you?" He raised his eyebrows. "Are you sure that you aren't just wanting to spend more time with me?"
I scoffed. "That's pretty bold. See you downstairs."
I left the room, taking the keys with me. I walked over to the elevator. I waited as it came up from the ground floor. When it opened, I found it empty. I slipped inside, and it lowered to the main floor. When I stepped out, I saw Dex leaning against the wall outside of the doors. I did a double-take, but when he grinned, I knew it was him.
"Ever heard of stairs?" I couldn't help laughing. "Why risk your life in a piece of weak human technology, when you could risk it saving the world?"
"You idiot," I said playfully. "It's easier, that's why."
"Are you ready for another round of strange human food?" he asked, changing the conversation after he found that he had not snappy come-backs.
"Sure," I replied, trying to hide my amusement.
We went over to the buffet. After a few moments, we found the vegetarian options, and filled our plates and bowls.
"Do you think I should try 'Fruit Loops'?" Dex asked. I shrugged, and he filled a bowl with them, then poured milk over the colourful rings.
I grabbed some tongs, and dished myself a muffin, topped with small, circular blue berries. I watched, bewildered, as cooked bread flew out of a machine.
Finally, after we had enjoyed the excitement of human breakfast, we headed out. Dex, using the skills he had developed from his first kidnapping, bought us an hour of internet at a library. He typed on the human computer, and found some maps. He searched for routes. Eventually, he decided that we would take a bus. That would bring our travel time down by at least two days or more.
We rushed out onto the street, just as the big, red bus swung around the corner. The driver was a big man, and he met us with a big smile. We put our money into the box, and headed to the back of the bus where we hoped we could find some privacy. We needed to talk.
