Chapter 68
REBEL SIMMONS POV
I continued to type rapidly as Pavloski let out a deep breath behind me, filling the air with second hand smoke.
I continued typing the same code in a variety of different ways, hoping that Pavloski wouldn't catch onto the repetition. This was my Hail Mary, my last chance to try and let Dante know where I was.
This was my only chance of getting out of here alive.
For the past 14 hours, Pavlovski thought that I was hacking into the Vino security system. But little did he know, that I was actually sending them a message... actually a shit ton of messages.
I lied when I said that Dante had control over the system. I could access it at anytime. I love that man, but when it came to cyber security he wasn't exactly... proficient. In fact, Dante's version of "fixing" something would be more along the lines of shooting it then simply replacing it.
Instead, I was pathetically hacking into their software, making sure to leave a very obvious paper trail of IP addresses. This would cause the security software to trigger an alert that would notify all the admins I assigned prior to my kidnapping: which would be Damon and Giana. Last time, they were able to look past my domain, decipher my code, and trace my location. Hopefully they'd be able to do it again.
Fuck, they better be able to do it again with the trail I'm leaving them.
I also used this time to ping nearby cell towers, hopefully giving me some indication as to where the hell I am. Based off that information, I quickly realized that I was in New York, the place where the Russian and Italian rivalry began.
"You're running out of time." Pavlovski said before he inhaled deeply.
"I've been here for 14 hours. I need to eat at some point." I said as I looked over my shoulder at him. "I'm exhausted." I said seriously.
"I said you had until the end of the day." Pavlovski said as he tossed his cigarette down onto the floor before stepping on it gently and twisting his foot. Silence stretch between us as images of my bloody and beaten mother crawled into the forefront of my mind. I inhaled deeply, allowing the second hand smoke to burn my lungs as I attempted to keep my composure.
"You have a better chance of me helping you if she's alive you know." I said in a deadly tone.
"Excuse me?" Pavlovski said as he raised his eyebrow.
"My mother. You and I both know that you won't kill her." I stated as I stared at him with an emotionless expression on my face.
"And whys that?" He said as he tilted his head and narrowed his eyes.
"Because if you kill her, you'd lose your leverage over me." I explained in a dull tone as I tilted my head to the side. His clenched jaw and tense body language indicated that I was right, and I silently let out a breath of relief.
"I need to eat." I demanded as I began to stand up.
"No, you need to get this shit done." Pavlovski said as he stood up and looked down at me.
"Trust me, you won't like me when I'm hungry." I said as I narrowed my eyes and scowled at him. We stared at each other for a moment, as if we were waiting for the other to look away first.
"Hm. So this is what Rose meant by 'hangry'" Pavlovski mumbled as he raised his eyebrow and gripped my arm roughly.
He swung the door and pulled me into a narrow hallway. Pavlovski turned left and began to walk quickly, practically dragging me behind him. I looked over my shoulder and at the large black door at the end of the hallway, the door that led to my battered mother. He roughly shoved me forward, forcing me to turn my attention in front of me.
We walked quietly through the house until we reached the large wooden door of my bedroom. Pavlovski stuck his hand down his pocket and quickly pulled out a key. He opened the door and roughly pushed me inside, making me stumble slightly to regain my footing.
"Your meal will be here shortly." He said coldly before slamming the door, making the walls shake slightly around me.
I let out a breath as I ran my hands through my hair and began walking towards the bathroom. I turned on the sink and splashed my face with water. I gripped the counter with both hands as I hunched my back, leaning forward as I closed my eyes.
The original plan was to use the tracker to find out where Pavlovski was hiding, then once they have a location, use stealth to our advantage. Once the location was secure, Natalia and Isa would rig the facility with explosives, get me and my mother out, then blow this place, and more importantly Pavlovski, straight to hell.
I began hacking into the Vinos security system 14 hours ago. Best case scenario would be that they realized that I was trying to communicate with them after my first attempt. If so, it would take roughly 11 hours to fly from Venice to New York. So if Damon and Giana were successful in tracing my location then they should be here... any minute now.
I quickly turned around as I heard the door to my room open, revealing Rose walking in with a full tray of food. Her shaky hands held onto the silver tray as she closed the door with her hip. I quickly walked towards her and gave the elderly woman a soft smile as I took the heavy tray from her hands.
"Thank you." I said in Russian, earning a nod from a tired looking Rose. I grabbed a dinner roll from the tray before gently placing it down onto the bed. I took a small bite from it as I looked at her.
"Do you have any children? Grandchildren?" I asked as I stared at her. Rose's hazel eyes went wide, and I could tell that the question made her feel slightly uncomfortable, yet she reluctantly nodded her head as she stared at the floor.
"Do you get to see them?" I continued as I took the last bite of the dinner roll.
Rose looked up at me with her eyes shimmering with pain. She nodded slightly as her eyebrows furrowed.
"I know he told you not to speak to me, but how can you be so loyal to a monster?" I scoffed as I stared at her. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion as she looked down at the floor and chuckled.
"Because, little one, I cannot abandon my own child." Rose said in a delicate voice.
Wait... child?
As I processed her words, I took a closer look at the kind woman in front of me. Her hazel eyes matched Pavlovski's. Her nose was sharp, just like his. Even though her facial features were softer than his, he bore a slight resemblance to her.
"You're.... You're his mother aren't you." I said as I took a small step closer to the elderly woman. She nodded slightly before giving me a sad smile.
"So, you're... you're my-" I stuttered as I processed the situation in front of me.
"Grandmother. Yes." Rose said as she quickly walked towards me and wrapped her arms around me tightly.
I stood there in shock as I processed her words. Rose held me for a moment before taking a step back and staring at me with a sad expression plastered across her face.
"Little one, please forgive me for not telling you sooner." Rose said quickly as she looked down at the floor.
"Grandma," I said as I furrowed my eyebrows and gripped her shoulders. Her eyes lit up at the word, and I could tell she had desperately been wanting to hear it for quite some time.
"Why are you here? Why are you putting up with his abuse?" I said in a low tone as I looked at the frail old woman. She paused for a moment, as if collecting her thoughts before she let out a long sigh.
"Because I hoped that if I stayed, I would get to meet you." She said with a small smile.
"Grandma... I..." I began. I immediately paused as I contemplated telling her that help may possibly be on the way. Granted, she may be my grandmother, but can I trust her? She broke Pavlovski's rule about not speaking to me... but still. At this point I was hesitant about trusting anyone.
I watched as Rose gently smiled at me as she slowly reached into her pocket. I watched cautiously as she pulled out a silver key.
"Rebel, I know I wasn't there for you. If there was an option for me to be there with you, I would have taken it in a heartbeat." Rose began as she looked up at me with sadness pooling in her hazel eyes.
"But if there's one thing I can do for you, is to help you get out of here." She said as she gripped my hand and gently pressed the cold, metal key in my palm before placing her hand over mine.
"What is this?" I asked as I furrowed my eyebrows.
"This key will open up the door where your mother is being held." Rose explained in a low tone.
"But what about you? If he finds out that you helped me, he could kill you." I said quickly and I squeezed her hand.
"Don't worry about me, little one." She said with a weak smile.
"Come with me. We can leave... together." I said quickly, panic slipping through my tone.
"I can't." Rose said with a somewhat peaceful expression on her face. "While you're getting your mother, someone has to make sure he's occupied." She explained as I furrowed my eyebrows.
"Rose..." I said as I looked at her with concern.
"There isn't much time, little one. After I leave, wait ten minutes before walking out. I'll leave your bedroom door unlocked." Rose said quickly as she stared at me. "You still remember how to get to your mother, yes?" She asked as she furrowed her eyebrows.
"Yeah." I said softly.
"Good, good." Rose said gently as she gave me a soft smile. She wrapped her delicate arms around me, squeezing me into a tight embrace before sighing loudly.
"I love you, my granddaughter. Promise me, once you get your mother, you run out of here as fast as you can." She breathed as she stared at me, her expression filled with worry.
"...I love you too, grandma... and I promise." I said quietly, making a sad smile stretch across her aged face.
She held me at arms length for a moment and stared at me, as if she was taking in my every detail. Then, without another word, she turned her back to me, and began walking towards the door. She quickly left the room, allowing me to wrap my mind around everything that just happened.
I looked down at the key in my hand as I began to counting, mentally marking each minute that passed.
