Chapter 44

** REBEL SIMMONS POV **

In all honesty, I wasn't sure how my mother was going to handle meeting Dante. She even admitted that for a few years, she thought I was a Lesbian and afraid to come out of the closet due to my lack of interest in boys. But like my kind hearted mother does best, she accepted Dante with open arms and a beaming smile. I couldn't help but laugh at the irony that she embraced a ruthless Mafia Don as if he was a puppy.

I looked at the array of sweets in the quiet cafeteria. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. My mother never ate sweets, let alone would I know what she would like. It made me feel slightly uneasy that she wanted to talk to Dante alone, but to why is unbeknownst to me.

I chuckled at the thought of my frail mother giving my "boyfriend" the intimidation talk I've always seen in movies. You know, the conversation usually made by a over protective father cleaning his shot gun in front of a pimple faced teenager trying to take his daughter out for a dance kind of talk.

Growing more annoyed by my unusual indecisiveness, I grabbed one of everything and piled it onto a plastic tray. I grabbed a set of forks and spoons, and started to walk slowly into my mothers room.

As I reached door number 320, I heard the faint yelling of my mother. I heard the calm, baritone voice of Dante, and picked up my pace. I turned the handle with my arm and opened the door with my ankle to see my frail mother holding a familiar looking revolver, pointed directly at Dante with a hurt expression on her face. Dante was still sitting in the chair, looking relaxed as his hand was rested under his chin.

"What the fuck!" I yelled dropping the tray of sweets to the floor. The two had their eyes locked on each other, as if waiting for someone to make the first move.

"Well?" Dante said coldly as he lifted his arms to the side in surrender. His face still completely void of emotion.

My mother's hand started to tremble as the gun shook in her hand. Tears streamed down her face as she looked at Dante, then to me with a pained expression.

"Fuck. I can't." She said as she dropped the gun. Dante quickly walked over and gently removed it from her shaking grasp, and tucked it in his waistband.

"Mom. What the hell is going on?" I said as I walked over to her side of the table.

"Honey, I'm so sorry. I'm so so so sorry." She said as tears streamed down her face. She looked at me, her tears reflecting the faint red glow of the lights on her face...

Wait... what?

"Get down!" I screamed. In an instant I pulled her off her bed and away from the window, realizing the red dots on her face were from multiple sniper rifles.

I cushioned the blow of her fall by turning so I was directly underneath her, and quickly ripped out the monitors attached to her skin. The window shattered as bullets rained down into the room. Dante ducked down, and kicked a large monitor in front of the window, blocking the view for the distant shooters. He then army crawled towards us, grabbed my ankle, and dragged me and my crying mother under the hospital bed, blocking us from the glass raining down into the room.

He quickly got out his phone and made a call, speaking in rapid Italian. The sounds of glass shattering and bullets ricocheting around the room rendered me unable to hear what Dante yelled into the telephone.

"I have a specialized medical plane waiting for us at the airstrip. All we have to do is just make it out of here and to the car. I have no men here, so we're on our own." He said over the noise as he pulled me closer to him. I looked under the seat I was in, and saw my backpack laying under a piece of a monitor. I gently placed my still crying mother on the floor and crawled over to it. I grabbed the backpack and pulled it underneath the bed, narrowly avoiding a ricocheting bullet in the process.

I quickly took out my laptop, and started to hack into the hospital security cameras and parking lot footage. I looked at the angle of the bullets flying into the room, and hacked into the rooftop footage of what I assumed would be the best vantage point for the west side of the hospital, the apartment building a block down the street. My fingers rapidly typed on my keyboard until I hacked the security system. Dante gently rubbed my back, calming me as the bullets started to come to a halt.

"I'm in." I said as my eyes surveyed the live feed. There were five men surrounding the Range Rover outside and at least 5 more waiting in the park lot near them. There were four men inside the hospital, roaming the hallways as they were getting closer to reaching our room. The roof top footage displayed 6 snipers.

"That's my girl." Dante said as he kissed my hair. "I'll handle the men inside, then we'll make a break for it."

"We can't." I said glancing at my mother who was wiping her eyes. "We're outnumbered. We have to go about this strategically." I said calmly as I opened a new window on my laptop.

"If they were smart, they would have rigged the car. So even if we took out all of their guards, the second we start the car we would be done for." I stated as I started to hack into the Range Rovers systems.

"Valid point." Dante said calmly as he took out my mothers revolver and placed it on my lap. He then proceeded to take out two guns and checked them for ammo. My heart slightly cluttered as I saw an all black gun in his right hand. I quickly shook off the thought and focused on the task at hand.

"There's six snipers on the roof a block away. Based on their position, they would have the best vantage point on the front and right side of the hospital, so the front is not an option for us." I said as I finally gained access to the rental car. I looked at the cameras, the men in the hallway were only a few doors down.

"I'll create a diversion to distract the men in the hallways so you can take care take them out." I whispered to Dante.

"What type of diversion?" Dante asked as his eyebrows furrowed and his hand cupped my face.

"A loud one." I smiled before he passionately kissed me.

"Be safe, babe." Dante said before he walked towards the door. He prepared his guns and looked at me for the signal.

I watched as the men in the hallway stood at door 322, and entered the code on my program and clicked enter.

I started the Range Rover remotely, and as predicted, it exploded, killing or injuring all of the assailants in the parking lot. The explosion caused a loud echo to ring throughout the hospital, catching the men in the hallways off guard. I hit the space bar, and the fire alarm started going off in the hospital and in the apartment building a block away. The sprinklers started to rain down in the building as I nodded towards Dante to proceed as I plugged in my phone to transfer the live feed.

I watched the cameras as he kicked open the door. He stepped out and shot each of the men in the head with ease and deadly precision. The snipers a block down started to quickly pack up their gear before emergency services arrive. Giving us a small window to make our move. Dante walked back into the room and helped me up, then lifted my mother off the ground and carried her.

"Rebel I'm so sorry." My mother cried as we walked out of the room.

"Shh it's okay mom. Let's get out of here first, then we can talk about it." I said as I grabbed my bag and shoved my laptop inside.

I looked at my phone to check the live feed, making sure that the coast was clear before we made our move. We quickly ran towards the elevator, and clicked the button for the ground floor. I hear footsteps approaching from down the hall, and quickly grabbed my mothers revolver. A man dressed in all black turned the corner, and began pointing an assault rifle directly at us.

I quickly shot the man twice, hitting him in the head, then the chest before the doors closed, filling the air with jazzy elevator music.

I nervously looked at my mother, who had her arms wrapped around Dante's neck as he carried her bridal style. She slowly looked over at me with wide eyes.

"I didn't see that." She simply stated and shrugged before looking forward again.

"Good. Good." I said awkwardly as I nodded and furrowed my eyebrows as the jazz music continued to play.

As soon as the doors opened, we ran to the back of the hospital, and I looked around at the barren parking lot. Rows of ambulances filled the back wall.

"You know what you're doing?" Dante asked as we stopped in front of an ambulance.

"This isn't the first time I've had to boost a car." I smirked as I took off my jacket and wrapped it around my hand tightly. I found the windows weak spot as I punched it as hard as I could, causing the window to shatter and the alarm to sound. I quickly unlocked the door and started to hot wire the car.

"So this is how you got that brand new truck for us after you totaled the Silverado, huh?" My mother asked with a smile and her eyebrow raised while Dante looked at me curiously.

"I have no idea what you're referring to." I said as I rearranged the wires in the ambulance.

"Oh you know exactly what I'm talking about young lady! You were 16, and totaled the car drifting into a pole. The next day you came back with a Ford Raptor saying you won it in a poem contest." My mother recalled as she scratched her chin. Dante bit his lip to muffle his laughter.

"I don't know what you mean. My haiku was superb." I said as I connected two wires and the car roared to life as Dante burst out into full blown laughter. Dante placed my mother in the passenger seat, while I sat in the middle next to him. He peeled out of the hospital with the sirens blaring the entire way to the airport.
