I'm a high school student who's working for a secret agency. I work in one of its branches, due to the secrecy, the place is really small (almost a room). There are only 5 people working here, including me. After my my best friend, Naomi, died, they told me they'd help me find her murderer. In exchange, because of my high IQ, I am their strategists. Everyday was fun but those long days won't last.
"So as I said, she was-" Taliyah stopped talking along with her 3 companions.
"Ahh!!!" they all screamed as they saw Nathan in the dark, looking dead on the floor.
"What happened here?!" Ken asked.
"Those eyes... impossible... Who? Who? Impossible," Nathan kept repeating words as if he was chanting.
"What the hell is he saying?" Taliyah asked.
"It's no use. He isn't in his right mind. Let's check the cameras," Haylee suggested.
Ken, along with Nathan, are the leaders of this branch. They may look young, but they're good with their work. Taliyah may seem fragile, but she's good with martial arts and self defense. Lastly Haylee, she is good with technology and she handles security. The 4 of them checked the cameras as Nathan lied on the floor.
On the screen, they could see Nathan working on his computer. The door opened and Ellie entered, though it looks like she isn't acting like herself. Nathan stood up and walked towards Ellie, he noticed she didn't look well.
When he touched her shoulder, as if she was in a trance, Ellie lifted her hands and started strangling him. Nathan was struggling removing her hands; her grip was of a snake suffocating its prey.
"E...Ellie...! Ngh! St...op it! ...! Sle...ep wal... king?!" he managed to say.
Ellie's movements were detrimental, deadly, it's if her body was possessed by a demon.
"Naomi... Naomi.... Naomi... Naomi," Ellie mumbled.
Nathan probably didn't hear her, but the audio was clear.
Nathan, having more strength, managed to loosen her grip.
"Ellie wake up!" he tried to snap her.
He failed. As soon as it looked like it was over, Ellie pulled out a knife she was hiding all this time. Nathan successfully dodged her first swing, but he tripped in doing so and got cut with the second swing. As she tried for the third one-
"Do you think Naomi wants this?!" Nathan yelled.
As soon as he said Naomi's name, Ellie stopped midway and the knife was almost touching his flesh. Her hair was covering most of her face, but just enough for everyone to see her expression. One that can't differentiate a friend or a foe.
"...What on earth was that...?" Taliyah said with her mouth open.
"No wonder you were terrified! Most people would go crazy in a situation like that. I'm surprised you thought to save your life by using Naomi's name," Haylee said.
"Let's stop using her..." Nathan suddenly said.
Everyone just stared at him as if he'd gone crazy.
"What? We're currently in a middle of a big job. You can't just say that when it's almost our deadline. I know you're worried about her, but you have to think realistically," Ken reasoned.
"Listen carefully, I'm not even half worried about her. Her brains is her only ticket to this agency, it's for our benefit! But it's a danger to the agency, I wish I never found her," Nathan said with anger.
"How could you say that? You're the one who encouraged us to use her! Don't forget you're the one who wanted her, and even lied about Naomi. That poor girl is working with the same people who killed her friend!" Ken said.
"What the hell are you two talking about," Ellie said.
Her eyes isn't the same as the tone of her voice. The 4 of them looked at her as if their souls weren't there. Shit, they all probably thought.
"Why do you look pale?" I said, "What are you talking about?" I added.
No one said anything, they were staring at me as if they were statues. They could have at least lied or brushed it off.
I walked passed them and I took my bag. As I was about to leave, I turned to face them and smiled. A bright lightning flashed and a loud thunder roared as I did.
A week had passed and I've ignored a bunch of calls and text. Even if I deleted them or even blocked them, a new number always showed up. I've received chocolates and flowers, they're just wasting money, they go straight to the bin anyway.
I wish the demons would obliterate these tainted memories of mine.
As I was on my way to the cafeteria, I saw Nathan standing in the middle of the hallway.
A lightning flashed.
I walked passed him and he grabbed my arm just as I was about to walk pass him. When I stopped, he knelt in front of me and everyone. I could hear loud whispers asking if it's a confession of some sort.
"I am sorry for everything I've said and done. I used you and even lied about helping you. We were the ones who needed your help, and instead I treated you like garbage. What I did was unforgivable and this might not sound convincing, but I'm sincerely sorry! Please come back, just this once and you could get your revenge," he said.
Looking at him in a remorseful position, I want to break him.
"Nathan how... pretentious you are. Making a fool out of yourself, you and the rest of the agency knew and yet, you still used me. You came all this way just to pretend to kneel in front of me, you even got everyone's attention with that," I paused to see his expression.
He's shivering like a little animal. I just want to laugh and point out how pitiable he looks.
"You make me sick," I said with bloodshot eyes and I turned around.
I stopped walking. "I hope the whole agency crumbles." Then I left.
Say Nathan, what did I look like to you? Did I look like that same girl you tricked? Did my eyes tell you my desires?
I left to talk to my homeroom teacher.
"What do you want to talk about, Ellie?" she asked.
"Can you help me transfer to a new school?" I bluntly said.
She was speechless.
"Why do you want to? I mean," she hesitated, "I can help you, but dropping out in the middle of the year?" she continued.
"I just want to save up more, the fees are expensive. I don't care if I repeat a grade," I said tepidly.
"I'll see what I can do, but think about it more," she said.
"There is nothing to think about, my mind is made up. Thank you," I said as I left.
I went home. I was pacing in my living room when I heard the bell ring. Opening the door, there in the hallway was Taliyah fidgeting.
"What are you doing here?" I said with the intentions of rejecting her presence.
"I'm truly sorry for hurting you so much," she said.
As much as I don't want to talk to her, I don't want the neighbors to hear this futile conversation.
"...I'll give you 5 minutes," I said and she walked inside.
"Aren't your parents home?" she said looking around.
"My parents aren't here. Just cut through the chase," I said.
She smiled at me, I could feel as if there were flowers and sparkles around her.
"Just like everyone in that loathsome agency, pretentious," I commented.
"Are... you really transferring?" she started the conversation.
"Eavesdropping aren't we?" I replied coldly.
"All of us have been reflecting on what we did. We need you because the whole agency will collapse if this continues. People will loose their jobs," she begged.
"Yes, that sounds rough," I mockingly said.
"Please, Ellie! If you don't forgive us, both the agency and your friends will be ruined!" she said.
"Stop trying to make me sympathize. I don't care what happens."
"Can't you just believe in him... No, all of us... just this once?" She is really persistent.
I moved towards the table and stared at the knife on top.
"Nathan was only thinking about the majority. He only thought about the workers with families, if one of the branches of the agency fails, the whole agency will be in chaos. Please understand the situation. I am not asking for forgiveness, just do this one last job." I don't care about his altruism.
"And what if I joined? What if I wanted revenge? What if my 'help' was only a ruse to expose the deepest darkest secrets of the agency to the public. All those employees you guys tried so hard to protect, will be unemployed; their poor families. Ah, but what if I don't stop there? What if I twist every single one of them with madness, to the point killing themselves seems like the right answer." I smiled.
"... You wouldn't do that. You wouldn't do that to innocent people... No, you wouldn't." As if she was a broken recorder, she kept repeating that same phrase. That I wouldn't do it, that I wouldn't dare.
I grabbed the knife on the table, as well as the pen. I quickly pushed her with one hand and stabbed the wall close to her right cheek. There was only a millimeter gap between the blade and her flesh. It was the same with the pen I was holding, a millimeter gap between the point and her left eyeball. She didn't even get the chance to react.
"And what if I did? I am a despicable person. 5 minutes is up, you know where the door is." I moved back. "Say hi to everyone for me. I'm sure someone would die watching this scene," I said as I moved my eyes to the center of the flower on her pin.
Taliyah's eyes widen as if she understood her situation and quickly ran out.
"Tell me that isn't Ellie. This is a big joke right? You saw that, right?" Taliyah said.
She wasn't talking to herself, she has a flower pin on here jacket, in the center of the flower is a camera. Haylee was on the other side of the line, witnessing the whole thing.
"Both footage of you and Nathan, is this really Ellie? Even if we did a background check on her, it's as if the girl we're talking to isn't her," Haylee said with a shaking voice.
"Haylee what do I do? I'm still shaking..." Taliyah dropped on the pavement. Her knees couldn't support her anymore. "She didn't really tried to kill me did she?" she said trying to force out a laugh.
Taliyah could only try to hold back her tears. She couldn't stop shaking. What bothered her the most wasn't the big picture; the fact that she almost got stabbed. It was the moment before she left, Ellie's eyes was on the flower pin. It's as if she knew someone was watching the whole thing. Those eyes of a demon sent chills down her spine.
"I'm coming to get you," Haylee said.
Just like Taliyah, Haylee also got shaken up when Ellie's eyes was on the camera. Her stare was filled with bloodlust, she felt and saw it.
It's still raining huh? It's my spare and I've been walking down an empty hallway. Looking to my left, is the quadrangle. I could see the raindrops fall without any care in the world. I walked out of the protection of the roof, and just like the raindrops, I didn't care if I get wet or even get sick. Would it be better if I died?
"You really shouldn't have found out until the very end... You shouldn't have found out." Turning around I saw Ken standing in the hallway.
"We didn't think you'd get hurt. We don't have a shred of honor, so there's no way we'd deserve your forgiveness, instead... come back to the agency and take your revenge on us. Make us bleed, torture us, we'll endure whatever you desire. Bring things back to the way they were," he said without any bluff.
"...Is this just a part of your oblivious plan?" I asked looking at him as the rain continued to fall.
"Huh..?" He's confused.
"Make you bleed? Torture you? You guys are a 100 years to early to say these kinds of things too lightly. Do you even know what it feels like? To bleed until you could only wish for death," I said.
"W-wait! What are you..." he said confusingly.
"This is the third time I heard about this revenge shit. I'll finish the job." I looked up at the crying sky.
"R-really?! We could go back...!" He ran up to me and tried to hug me. I moved back and he stopped.
"W-what's wrong Ellie?" he asked.
"I said I'd do the job. Once done, I just want all of you to forget." I turned around and left.
Ken returned and saw everyone in a state of shock. They saw the whole thing through the cameras of the school.
"What..?" Taliyah said.
"She just... agreed?!" Haylee questioned.
"Why...?" Nathan who was behind them asked.
All if them were thinking, Why did she agree?
"There's one thing I'm worried about. When Ken said about bleeding and torture, she said things as if she knew what they felt like. What did you think she meant?" Nathan said.
"Those words and the actual evidence we have, don't match up. It's as if, all the questions we have are just because of overthinking," Haylee pointed out.
That afternoon I came back to the agency. A place filled with liars, murderers, all of them are disgusting.
"Ellie you're here!" Taliyah tried to hug me, but I slapped her hand away. "I-I'm sorry..." she said softly.
For hours, I've been working on my last job in this place. Each hour, each minute, each aching second, I dare not to shatter.
"I finished my job," I said as I packed my things.
My face feels numb, it's been a long time since I haven't moved my face. Everything about them is just like me, I'm a liar, everything about me is a lie.
"Don't you want to stay-" I cut Ken off.
"Stay? I never once mentioned that things are going to be the way it was before. My job is done."
"If you're angry about Naomi then shout! If you're sad then cry! How do we know what you feel if you don't tell us!" Taliyah shouted.
"Know? It was never my intention to let you know anything. If you dare touch me again, I'll reveal the secrets of this agency to the entire country. If I am consumed by revenge, I would have done that with my tiny finger tips."
"Then what do you want?" said Nathan.
My eyes turned towards the door and back to their faces. For that split second I though, What do I want? Things that I always cherished always slip through my grasp. The dearest things I hold the most are the things that always disappears.
"You'll receive an email. I hope you all stay and watch the show." I turned around.
"Laughter, emotions, memories, my existence... forget them all," I said in a volume just loud enough for them to hear. Then I left with the sound of the door shutting.
The next day a senior walked up to me.
"I like you," he confessed.
"What do you like about me?" I asked.
"You're pretty and have a cool personality," he replied.
Only that? How biased. I wrapped my arms around his neck. He trembled.
"If you like me, you aren't afraid on a little kiss?" I bluntly said.
He blushed and nodded his head. I wonder how much this worthless body of mine can handle. Can it be as twisted as my mind?
The kiss was warm and good, as he was about to do other things, the door slide open.
"Ah... we've been caught. Let's continue this next time," I said as I loosen my arms around his neck.
He hurriedly buttoned his shirt and buckled his belt. He quickly left like the way he quickly kissed me.
"What are you doing?" Nathan asked.
I buttoned my shirt and fixed my skirt. As I stood up straight, I ran my hands through my hair.
"You don't even know him! Don't just go doing it with random people!" he nagged.
I walked pass him as if he were a ghost, ignoring him.
"What are you-" He grabbed my arm.
I pulled my hands away and turned around.
"Who are you?" I said with dull looking eyes.
He couldn't even speak. He just easily let me off and all he could do is stand there.
"Laughter, emotions, memories, my existence, forget them all... Is that what you meant...?!" Nathan said to himself as he remembered Ellie's words last night.
In the hallway I was walking with a knife hidden behind my back. They should've received the email by now. As I was walking in a busy hallway. My mind went blank and my body moved on it's own. People, one by one, fell on the floor and blood scattered. I'm leaving a trail of dead bodies behind me.
"What is this-!" yelled a girl. I turned around and saw the 4 liars.
"What the fuck is this?!" Ken said.
"Blood... ha... ha.. ha." Taliyah was hyperventilating.
"Ellie... What did you do?!" Haylee screamed.
My body isn't shaking. My mind is only filled with twisted madness. My heart stopped beating, all I could hear is the agonizing pain of the people.
"Can't you see? This is the everlasting show! I hope you have the body bags ready ladies and gentlemen. If you need me, I'll be in the roof," I said as I walked away.
"What's this?! This isn't her! Who the fuck was that?!" Ken panicked.
"Those... were the same eyes that gave me nightmares. That night when I visited her, she had those same damn eyes!" Taliyah thought she finally calmed down, but she continued to panic.
"Her mind, it's as if it's not there. We... did this. We broke her. It's... our fault, it's my fault. What did I just unleashed?" Nathan said with a perturbed expression.
"She... slaughtered her own kind, her own classmates and teachers with equanimity. Those are the eyes that is used in doing and seeing such gruesome things. Just who the fuck is she?!" Ken, who everyone thought had a calm composure, now looking as if he's engulfed with madness.
"Stop it! Stop it... We need to clean... this up," Taliyah said with a broken voice.
Who wouldn't? Seeing dead bodies of innocent adults and children, knowing that someone gave them the responsibility to clean up as if it's nothing... no, knowing that this is their responsibility to clean up and act as if it's nothing. Who wouldn't lose their minds?
Ahh... they're taking their time. I heard the door open, when I turned to look, I saw the 4 of them out of breath.
"Welcome, welcome. You guys sure took your time!" I said with a guiltless smile. It's as if I didn't do anything at all.
"Ellie just who are y-" Ken said.
"Shhh," I said with a finger on my lips, interrupting him.
"Ellie Hale, just who is she. Ohhh! Did you know? Did you know, that both of my parents are dead?" I said benevolently. Looking at their faces, it seemed like they knew already.
"Ahhh, but did you know? Did you know, that the reason for their death is a lie? Hahaha. Accident? More like a family suicide!
"But you must be curious on why they would do such a thing. Let me tell you a wonderful story. One fall evening, I, the little sister, came home, only to find myself all alone, all alone but a single letter on the table. There it read: I am sorry, for this life, for everything.
"You must have guessed it! It's from my older sister. I ran to my older sister's room, there, layed the body of my most adored sister. With her, are both of our parents in a state of shock. They didn't even have the strength to call the police or an ambulance. My older sister took her own life, for God knows why.
"Days, weeks had gone by and my parents couldn't accept the fact that their most precious daughter died. Hmm, what can my parents do to overcome this grief? A family suicide?" I laughed and saw their depraved faces.
I stood on the ledge of the roof. If the wind was strong enough, it could tip my balance off and I'd fall to my death.
"Don't look at me with those faces. The story isn't that bad yet. You know what it makes it even more so? The fact that I survived! The fact that the incident caused someone of high power to be injured, in the end the incident was nothing more than an 'accident'. My parents, blamed of drunk driving. What a twisted world we have here, my 7 years old self thought.
"Lied, mocked, bullied, neglected, all the words in the book. These are nothing compared to what the I did to myself. To save my last remaining sanity, did you know what I did? A lie! Why not lie? I said to myself. Though in the end, that last drop of sanity riot as well. I grew up with misanthropy, grew up being twisted. I lived my life filled with madness and ruse.
"One day, a bright and wonderful person came to my life. Yup, her name's Naomi. She was the only reason for me to live. Now, do you want to know how the only important person in my life, was murdered in front of me?" I smiled.
I continued to pace back and forth on the ledge. It's like a game when we were kids, stepping on the white line.
"We were both kidnapped. I saw her get rapped and I saw him strangle her until she couldn't breathe, until her pink flushed skin turned into cold dead white. Even her dead body wasn't saved. He continued to play with her dead rioting body. Cut her body in pieces and burned all of it into ashes. I cut the ropes using my long nails, cut it until my nails broke and bled. Now freed, I took his knife, I stabbed his face continuously, stabbed it until his couldn't be recognized." As I was telling the story, I brought out the knife I used just a while ago.
"Having your reason to live get killed in front of you is like madness eating you up. Learning the fact that everything you would die for is a lie, is like convincing yourself that you are madness itself." I laughed loudly and it was painful. I used it to disguise my scream, it was so loud that my throat feels dry.
With the knife I was holding, I slit my wrist multiple times. I did it with my left wrist until there aren't spaces to cut anymore. Running out of canvas, I did the same with my right wrist. I sliced and sliced until my entire arm was drenched with blood.
"Stop that!" Nathan yelled.
"What are you trying to do? Kill yourself?!" Ken shouted.
To his question, I smiled a happy smile.
"Kill... myself? HAHAHAHAHAHA! What a wonderful idea and a possibility, but not quite. You see, the reason I told you this story, isn't because I wanted to be saved or to receive your apathetic pity. It's to see your faces. The faces of yours, when you find out that everything about me, from birth 'til my death, is just a collection of abhorrent tragedies. I want to see your faces, a face that realizes that those promises, actions, and underhanded lies killed me, and above all, knows that no matter what they do and say, that twisted and broken girl could never be saved. That all they can do is watch her die..." I said as I raised the knife near my throat.
"No!!" Taliyah begged.
"Ellie please! Don't end it like this!! This is just too sad!" Nathan said.
"Don't hurt yourself! Hurt us instead! Let us carry some of that burden with your... PLEASE!" Ken tried to convince me.
My smiled disappeared, as if those words touched me. As soon as my it disappeared my smiled returned as quickly as that. I smiled a wonderful fake smile, like the ones I've done before. It was the biggest one, yet it was the most fake one. It was, by all means, my last smile.
"My adversity is that I was born. Your adversity is that you met me. Forty thousand brothers, could not, with all their quantity of hate, make up my sum. I am a child of melancholy, a girl of lies who was born in a town of liars. I won't face divine retribution with a remnant sin like that," I said.
I want to see it. Their faces of regret, their faces of pensive self hatred. That type of face that has: Why did I lie to her? Why did I not know any of these? If only I have known sooner, then maybe she could have been saved. It's too late, written all over them.
"This school, your lies, laughter, emotions, promises, my entire existence, this twisted world. I want to curse them all for killing me."
I drew a line across my throat. A perfect straight line that bloomed crimson red flowers. The sound of screaming echoed in my ears as my tainted body fell from the building.
