The Shadow
Author's note: Here comes the Banana- I mean, the Yiga Clan!
Gerudo Canyons, Unknown Cave System.
Kohga timidly knocked on the secret swiveling door, waiting for someone to open it. After a few seconds, nobody did, he slowly pushed it open, entering the large, circular chamber that was the heart of their hideout.
As soon as he did, a throwing star flew across the room and embedded itself in the wall mere inches above him.
Kohga yelped. "It's me! It's me!"
Master Doghi appeared in front of him in a shower of ofuda papers and smoke. "Kohga!" he scolded. "I've told you not to enter without first knocking!"
"I did knock!" Kohga pleaded. "I did!"
Doghi paused. "W- uh, you didn't knock loud enough."
Kohga rolled his eyes underneath his mask, grateful that his master couldn't see his disappointment.
"Regardless, sir, I have received some information from our top scouts embedded in Hyrule Castle." Kohga informed him. "They say there is more to the recent Landquake than we originally thought."
"Ooooooh!" Doghi said excitedly, sitting down cross legged and patting his thighs. "I love a twist."
Kohga silently rolled his eyes again. "Apparently, the Landquake was part of a large-scale excavation mission to unearth ancient Sheikah technology."
Doghi spat. "PAH! Sheikah. Disgraceful prudes."
Kohga nodded and continued. "They found four large machines, each at least 30 tall, hidden in rock faces and mountains across the land. The closest to us was right here in the Gerudo Canyon, and they found one even as far away as Death Mountain."
"Thirty meters, eh?" Doghi asked, not sounding at all impressed or concerned. "I wouldn't worry too much about it."
"But sir," Kohga begged. "This is our chance! We have assassins standing by in their castle at this very moment! We could take them all out, and take the machines for ourselves!"
Doghi snorted. "Listen to yourself, Kohga. Us? Use Sheikah technology? Heresy, I say!" he stamped a fist on the ground. "You are dismissed!"
"But-"
"DISMISSED!"
Kogha grunted angrily, but did as his master asked, leaving the chamber and back into the compound, retreating to his quarters. As he entered, he looked at a small framed painting that sat on a barrel, which served as his bed-side table.
The painting was of a very young Kohga, and his father, Krago, the previous master of the Yiga Clan. The small Kohga was trying to put on his father's mask, which was much too large for his tiny head at the time. Krago was laughing, patting his son on the back.
"I'm sorry, father." Kohga said solemnly. "I will avenge you, one day."
Kohga and his family had been the leaders of the Yiga Clan for many years, including Kohga's father's mother, and her father before her, and even further back in the family line, beyond Kohga's knowledge.
But one day, when Krago had gotten very old, he was challenged by a young Yiga clan member- Doghi himself. It had never happened in over a hundred years- Kohga's line had been in power for so long, why would anyone dare oppose them?
But Doghi had planned it out. The Clan's traditions said that anyone, over the age of 18, could challenge the current master to a duel. The victor would become the next master, and the loser...would die.
It hardly seemed fair. Krago was so old and frail, Doghi was so young and nimble- but the traditions had to be followed.
The fight was short, Kohga remembered that much. At the end of it all, Doghi was victorious, plunging a dagger into Krago's chest, and throwing him into the pit in the center of the hideout, where the body would never be recovered.
Kohga sighed, remembering that day. We didn't even give him a proper burial...
Suddenly, a knock at his door drew his attention. "Enter." he commanded.
A Yiga footsoldier entered the room, bowing to Kohga, who bowed back. "You sent for me, commander?"
"Yes, Sooga." Kohga replied. "It's good to see you, old friend."
"You as well." Sooga said in return. "What is your bidding?"
Kohga beckoned him closer, whispering. "It's time." he said. "Tell our assassins in the castle to enact our secret plan."
"The secret plan? Or the super-secret plan?" Sooga asked, cocking his head.
"Neither of those! The super-super-secret plan."
"ohhhh..."
Kohga pressed his forehead against Sooga's. "We will stop Doghi's tyranny. This is merely the first step."
With that, Kohga dismissed Sooga, who vanished in a plume of smoke and red ofuda.
I will avenge you, father.
