Chapter 7: Christmas with The Averys
“We shouldn’t be doing this” April said breathlessly as her boyfriend’s lips traced her jaw “We really shouldn’t be doing this”
She was sandwiched between the wall of the on call room and Jackson’s bare chest, as his face moved to her neck.
“Then why did you follow me in here?” he asked against her neck, his breath and the vibration from his voice, causing chills down her spine.
“You said you wanted to talk” she answered, trying to stifle a moan
He lifted his head from her neck and looked down at her.
“Well, we are talking…….” He said
She rolled her eyes and slapped his chest, before he grinned ‘that grin’ and crashed his lips into hers.
Resisting Jackson these past few weeks had gotten more difficult and April was beginning to rethink her no sex rule. For the past few days, simple pecks on the lips escalated to groping make out sessions, but the interruptions of their five year old daughter always stopped them in their tracks. She knew that Jackson was frustrated and by the way he was grinding his hips into hers, she could tell he was having trouble resisting her too. She didn’t want to break her rule, she didn’t want things to get complicated, like they always did, after they had sex.
April groaned in his mouth when she heard one of their pagers go off……again. She tried to squirm out of his embrace, but his grip on her side kept her still.
“It’s probably just the interns, the residents will deal with them” he said against her lips, as his hand moved up her side, then cupped her breast over the thin lacey material of her bra.
She moaned in his mouth at the touch. She kept thinking to herself that maybe the could do it, just this once and the they could go back to not having sex again, although that didn’t work the first time around. But she didn’t want to think about that, she was at the point where she needed it. She had an itch between her legs that she needed Jackson to scratch.
“Just this once” she whispered against his lips, causing him to smile against hers
He hungrily kissed her as his hands moved down to her waist. He hooked his thumb around the elastic waistband of her scrub bottoms and underwear and started to tug down.
“This is it” she thought as she felt his thumb graze the side of her thighs
His mouth once again found her neck and she palmed the back of his head, pressing him face against her.
Knock knock!
The two froze. Jackson’s hands stilled mid thigh as he moved his face away from April’s neck. They looked at each other then at the door. As April listened, trying to figure out who it was, Jackson mentally cursed his interns, thinking it had to be one of them.
“Mommy? Daddy?” they heard
April’s eyes widened as her mouth flew open.
“Shit” Jackson cursed lowering his head
“Oh my god!” April gasped
She pushed Jackson off of her before quickly pulling her bottoms up. She then searched the floor for her scrub top, which was discarded there earlier.
“How the hell did she know we were in here?” Jackson asked
He loved his daughter, he really did, but he wasn’t fond of her always showing up when he was about to get laid.
“Dr. Cristina, are you sure they’re in there?” Lydia yelled from outside the door
“So that’s how” Jackson thought to himself
“Oh they’re in there” Cristina replied, stifling a laugh
At least somebody was enjoying this predicament.
April finally spotted what she was looking for. She took hers and tossed Jackson his.
“Mommy? Daddy!” Lydia yelled
“Coming sweetie” April said, pulling her scrub top over her torso, Jackson doing the same
She straightened her scrubs and ran her fingers through her red hair before taking a deep breath and placing her hand on the door knob.
“Wait!” Jackson said before she could pull the door open
“What?” she asked, looking back at him
He pointed to his crotch with his eyes.
“Oh” April said, staring at the bulge “sorry” she added
Jackson runs over to the bed ad grabs a pillow and holds it in front of himself. He nodded at April, indicating she could now open the door.
April turned the knob and pulled it open, on the other side stood an impatient Lydia.
“What took you so long?” she asked
“Um, daddy and I were just talking” April nervously answered
“Yeah right!” Cristina, who was standing close by, laughed
Lydia looked behind her mother, and spotted Jackson standing there, pillow still at his front.
“Are you ok daddy?” she asked eyeing the pillow
“Yeah, I’m fine” he answered scratching the back of his head with one hand and holding the pillow in place with the other
“Why do you have a pillow?” she asked
At that, Cristina ran to the door and poked her head in. A loud laugh escaped her mouth at the sight. April looked down, her face getting red, while Jackson rolled his eyes. Lydia looked between the three adults, puzzled. What was so funny? Cristina wiped the tears that were now running down her face.
“You three are officially my favorite family” she grinned as she walked away from the door
April looked back down at her daughter.
“Sweetie what are you doing here? You’re supposed to be in daycare”
“I came so you could take me to see Grandma Cat. You said you would take me at one o’ clock, one o’ clock passed already” the little girl explained pointing at her pink wrist watch
Catherine, Harper and Richard were supposed to arrive at the hospital around one, and Jackson had told Lydia that he would come by at the day care and take her to see them then. He looked down at his watch, it was one thirty. They should have been here by now.
Just then, his pager went off again. He grabbed it off the small stand next to the bed, and checked it. Turned out his guests were already here and they were waiting at the nurse’s station.
“Well, looks like they’re already here” Jackson said
“Really?” Lydia grinned and Jackson nodded “Let’s go!”
The little girl ran into the room, past her mother and grabbed unto her father’s wrist.
“Come on!” she said pulling him, as he anchored his feet to the floor
“Uh sweetie” April said taking Lydia’s wrist and pulling them off her father’s “Why don’t we go see them ourselves, and daddy will catch up with us in a few” she pulled Lydia away from Jackson and to the door.
Without a question, Lydia allowed herself to be led out of the room. After a mouthed “Thank you” from Jackson, April smiled at him before closing the door behind her. Once they were out of the room though, Lydia thought it was a good time to ask questions.
“Why is daddy staying in there?” she asked
“Uh………”
“Your daddy has some business to take care of” Cristina answered with a smirk before April could
“What kind of business?” Lydia asked confused
“Hospital business” April quickly answered giving the heart surgeon a look, who was grinning back at her.
“O.K” Lydia answered, not quite believing her mother, from the looks her and Dr. Cristina were exchanging

"Grandma Cat!" Lydia cheered running to Catherine
"Baby girl" Catherine smiled stooping to the floor, opening her arms
Lydia grinned and jumped into them, placing her tiny arms around her grandmother's neck. After a long tight hug, the two pulled apart.
"You look a lot bigger than the last time I saw you" Catherine said, causing Lydia to grin
"That's cause I'm five years old now" she said, holding up her five fingers "And look, I'm wearing the dress you bought me" she added holding on to her purple dress, with pink and white flowers all over it and a white band around the waist
"I see" Catherine said looking her over "And you look adorable in it, just as I thought"
Lydia grinned at the compliment as Catherine stood up straight. The little girl then looked up at Richard, who was now standing next to Catherine.
"Hi Mr. Richard" she grinned up at him
"Hello Lydia" he greeted with a smile
"What took you guys so long to get here?" Her grandmother asked as April finally caught up to her daughter, who had sprinted ahead of her
"Mommy and Daddy were in the nap time room" Lydia said
"Nap time room?" Catherine questioned
"The room with the bunk beds in it" she explained
Two pairs of eyes shot up at an embarrassed looking April, giving her a knowing look.
"Hello April" Catherine finally greeted her with a smirk
"Hi" April replied with a red face
"And where is my son?"
"He's in the nap time room" Lydia answered for her mother "Dr. Cristina said he had to take care of business"
"Business?' Richard was now the one to question the little girl
"Mommy said it was hospital business, but I don't think that's what Dr. Cristina was talking about" she answered with a shrug
"Oh god" April sighed bowing her head, as Catherine and Richard chuckled
Lydia looked between the three. Grown ups were laughing again, and she didn't get the joke, again!
Just then Jackson walked up behind April and his daughter. His smile instantly turned into a questioning look upon seeing his mother and Richard laughing.
"Hey" he greeted as the two tried to hold back "what's so funny?"
"Little Miss Lydia here was just telling us about your little nap time room rendezvous" Richard managed to say through his chuckles
Jackson turned to April for confirmation and saw the embarrassed look on her face, giving him his answer.
"Oh" he said looking down, not knowing what else to respond with.
After the chuckles and giggles died down, Jackson noticed his grandfather wasn't around.
"Where's Grandpa?" he asked
"Oh, he's in the waiting room, he needed to sit down" Catherine answered "He's probably wondering where we are"
The group of three followed Catherine and Richard to the waiting area close by, where Harper was sitting, reading a magazine that was sitting on his lap. Feeling someone's presence, looked up and over his glasses and spotted them
"It's about time you all got here" he said closing the magazine "What took you so long?"
"Stuff" Jackson answered before anyone, specifically Lydia, could. She spotted the smirk on his mother's face.
"Hello Jacky" Harper greeted lifting himself of the chair, with help from his cane
"Hey grandpa" Jackson greeted as the two hugged
"Jacky" Lydia giggled at her father's childhood name "That's my name too" she added, referring to her middle name
"And who's this?" Harper asked looking down at the little girl, after pulling out of the hug
"This is Lydia" Jackson introduced
“Well hello Lydia" the older man greeted
"Hi" Lydia grinned
"And this is April" he said, pointing to his girlfriend
"Nice to finally meet you April" Harper said extending his hand
"Nice to meet you too" April said accepting his handshake
After the greetings and introductions, everyone decided to go separate ways. Richard went to catch up with his hospital family. Catherine and April headed off to the Cafeteria for lunch. Lydia was supposed to join them, but she insisted on accompanying her father and Harper on the tour of the hospital. The older Avery wanted to see how the foundations money was being used. Lydia latched herself unto Jackson's arm, following them around, as Harper closely observed them.

“This is boring” Cristina said sluggishly following April in the local mall
“Then why did you come along?” April asked turning to face her fellow surgeon
It was the day before Christmas eve. With Jackson at the hospital, Lydia with her grandmother and having a day off, April had some free time to finally do some Christmas shopping. She always enjoyed going all out for Christmas with Lydia. This year, she had Jackson to think of, and she more excited than ever.
Cristina stopped in her tracks.
“One, I was bored and two, I don’t have anyone to spend the day with”
After being “kicked out” of the hospital for coming in on her day off, she decided to join April and do some shopping herself.
“Meredith and Derek are visiting his parents for the holidays” she began “the lesbian are fighting, so don’t wanna be around that. Owen is out of town on some Chiefy business. Alex has an annoying crying baby. Jackson is in the hospital, which I am currently banned from………so that leaves you, I had no other choice.” Christina frowned
“Well you could have just gone home” April suggested
“Yeah, but I wanted to hang out with you. So we could bond and become besties” Cristina grinned
“Really?” April asked raising a brow
“No” she answered bursting any bubble April may have had, which she didn’t “Found some weird looking bug in the apartment and the exterminators are over there. Can’t go in for a few hours”
April shook her head before turning and continuing to walk down the large walkway, Cristina followed behind.
“Can we not go into another kid’s store?” Cristina groaned
April sighed “Well, where should we go?” she asked
Cristina scanned her surroundings and found the perfect store.
“There!” she pouted before taking April’s hand pulling her towards it “Looks promising”
“And expensive” April added
The two stepped into the store.
“Finally, adult sized stuff” Cristina said as she ventured off into the racks and shelves.
April went her on way, looking around. As the hour went by, April tried not to get tempted and get carried away buying the things she saw and liked, but she failed miserably and now had a sweater, a pair of skinny jeans that made her rear look fabulous, a pair of heels and a short black strapless dress she was sure Jackson would love. Now all she was missing was a handbag.
She strolled over to the ‘bag’ section of the store and began looking. One quickly caught her eye and she nearly ran to it.
A frown appeared on her face though when she saw the price tag. She didn’t think handbags would be this expensive. There was no doubt that she wanted it, but she had spent so much already. She placed the bag back in its spot and started to walk away.
“Aren’t you going to buy that?” Cristina asked walking up behind her
“I was, but it’s too expensive” she explained
“Expensive?” Cristina asked “Kepner you have surgeon money, which is a lot of money”
“Yeah, but that surgeon money is for bills ad my daughter”
“Oh come on” Cristina said annoyed “I get you love your annoying kid and all but sometimes you have to pamper yourself too. When was the last time you spent all this money on yourself?”
She had to admit, Cristina had a point. Once Lydia was born, everything revolved around her. Everything April did, she did for her. Every decision she made, she had to consider her daughter. The only time she spent money on herself was when she absolutely needed it.
“Well….” She trailed off, staring at the hand bag, It would go perfectly with the sweater she was about to buy.
“Plus you’re practically rich, since you’re an honorary Avery and all” Cristina said
“Honorary Avery?”
“You’re screwing Harper Avery’s grandson, well……….trying to screw him” she said, remembering the April/Jackson/Lydia fiasco she witnessed the day before “You had an Avery fetus in your uterus and pushed that same Avery fetus, with all it’s Avery stubbornness, out of your vagina, therefore, you are and Honorary Avery, which means you have Honorary Avery money”
“Wow” April said at her explanation
“So suck it up, and buy the damn bag Kepner”
April stared at the bag. She didn’t have Honorary Avery money, but it would be nice to buy a nice bag for herself. She took the handbag from it’s place. She looked between it and the other things she had already picked out, sitting on the cushioned seat, wondering if it was worth. She had to admit, she could think of a few things in her closet it would go perfect with.
“Fine” she finally said grabbing all her things and heading to the cash register

"Grandma Cat, how was daddy as a kid?" Lydia asked as she dug into her slice of cake
Jackson stepped in before his mother could.
"I was a good boy" he said
"No he wasn't" Catherine disagreed
"I was" Jackson defended
"Lydia your father was a little demon child" Catherine jokingly began, causing Lydia to giggle "He used to fight with boys at his school, play pranks on his teacher, kiss girls" Catherine added dramatically
Lydia made a "gross" face and mouthed "ew", hearing that her dad had kissed girls.
"Oh my god" Jackson groaned
"Daddy you gave girls cooties?" the little girl asked, remembering the term she heard from the first and second graders at her school
"Yes" Catherine answered
"No!" Jackson almost yelled right after
"And he threw the worst tantrums!" Catherine stressed before beginning her story "One day, on my day off from work, I bought Jackson shopping, thought it would be a nice to spend time with my baby boy. He was around four then. We passed a toy store and he spotted these little toy cars. He asked for one and I told him to wait. But his little inpatient behind couldn't, so he started crying and screaming 'I want the cawr, and the cawr' " Catherine said, doing her best baby Jackson impression
Jackson rolled his eyes, as April tried to hold her laugh in. Lydia on the other hand let hers out, spreading her hands as she did.
"Careful sweetie" April warned, noticing her hand had almost knocked down her glass of milk
"And when I told him no, he threw himself on the floor, and laid there and when I told him to get up, he said 'I'm not getting up until I get my cawr' " she continued her story as Lydia kept laughing "I ended up buying the car just so he could shut his little behind up"
Lydia pointed at her dad as her infectious laugh filled the area. April couldn't hold in her laughter anymore and joined her daughter, Richard soon joined in. Jackson rolled his eyes for what felt like the millionth time that night as his mother smirked, she just had to tell that story.
Harper Avery, who had been quiet most of the night, sat there and smiled to himself, remembering that day. He remembered sitting in his office at Mass Gen, on the phone while Jackson crawled on the floor, making noises as he drove his toy car around. He had told him many times to be quiet.
As funny as a story it was, it wasn't a fun time then. Jackson father had just left, abruptly, and the Avery family were going through a tough time dealing with it. Jackson had asked many times for his father, and Catherine thought bringing him out would distract him and also herself, from the situation. That day, she noticed that his tantrums had gotten worse since his dad left.
The smiles, laughs, and scowls in Jackson's case, that graced the faces in the room, quickly changed when Lydia hand accidently hit her cup of milk, making it fall unto the table, running over onto her dress.
“Oh no!” Lydia exclaimed “My dress!”
“Lydia, I told you to be careful” April said quickly taking a napkin, dabbing on the little girl’s dress “Come on, let’s get you cleaned up”
“I’ll help” Catherine volunteered
The two women led Lydia to her room as she held her arms up, as to not touch her wet dress. The three men were left at the table, which soon turned to two, after Richard excused himself to use the bathroom. That was exactly what Harper needed.
“I need to ask you something” he asked out of the blue
“Ok, go ahead” Jackson said, a little surprised at his grandfather’s sudden need to talk
“Are you sure?”
“Sure? About what?” Jackson asked confused
“About the little girl”
“What about Lydia?”
“Her being your daughter”
Jackson placed his fork down on his plate then turned to Harper. One half of him was surprised his grandfather would ask such a question, the other half however, saw this coming. Unlike Catherine, who was excited about finally having a grandchild to spoil rotten, Harper was skeptical about the sudden appearance of Lydia. He kept his skepticism to himself, but it didn’t go unnoticed by Jackson on his visits to Boston or talks over the phone. Catherine noticed it too, but she chose to not say anything, she wanted to wait until he was ready to discuss it, and now, he was ready.
“She is my daughter” Jackson stated
“I know you believe that, but are you sure? Yes, I may not know about you and her mother’s past, but I do know that she was married to another man the time she got pregnant. For all we know Lydia could be his. Did you get a DNA test?”
“Seriously?” Jackson said chuckling a bit “I don’t need a test to know that she’s daughter” he stressed, trying to hold his anger back
Harper shook his head at what he thought was his grandson’s naïve words “Are we even sure there wasn’t another man in the picture? She cheated on her husband with you, what makes you think she hadn’t done the same with you? Don’t you think it’s suspicious that she waited 5 years to tell you about her? What if she’s just pinning this child on you because you’re an Avery?......”
“Enough! I’m not going to sit here at let you disrespect April like that.” Jackson said through his teeth, cutting his grandfather off “She’s my daughter and that’s the end of the discussion”
“Oh this discussion is far from over. This isn’t just about you, this is about the Avery name! Do you know how this would look to the outside world if you’re fathering a child that’s not yours? Do you know how that might affect the foundation?”
“Can you just shut up!” Jackson yelled “It’s always about the Avery name and the stupid foundation! No wonder dad left!”
Harper froze a bit after hearing him say that.
“What is that supposed to mean?” he then asked
“You know exactly what it means” Jackson shot back
Harper was about to open his mouth to say something else, but he stopped when he heard the door to the bathroom down the hall open. A few seconds later Richard appeared and took his seat. He could tell that something had happened, but chose to stay out of it. He had learned not to get into Avery family drama. A few minutes later, April, Catherine and Lydia returned to the table, the little girl sporting a clean dress.
“Do I look pretty daddy?” Lydia asked, standing next to Jackson’s chair
“You look beautiful munchkin” he complimented, getting a grin from Lydia
She took her seat in between her parents and dug in to her dessert once again. The two women could tell something had happened, due to the tension in the room. Catherine looked at Richard, and he shrugged, indicating he had no idea what had happened. Catherine however had an idea of what went down. April, unlike her boyfriend’s mother, had no idea what had happened and mentally made a note to ask him about it, because it would have to wait since Lydia went into one of her story telling phases.
Things didn’t go as April planned when Jackson refused to talk about what happened that night. And it certainly wasn’t her plan for them to get a call in the wee hours of the morning, stating that Harper had gotten a heart attack.
Jackson carried a sleeping Lydia in his arms when he and April met his worried mother and Richard in the waiting room, waiting on word about Harper’s condition. She informed them that he was having some pain and the bought him into the E.R. After an EKG and some other test, they determined he was having an Heart Attack and Cristina had taken him into surgery, for an angioplasty, with assistance from Dr. Ross.
It was there that the guilt from his earlier conversation with his grandfather kicked in, and he spilled his guts to April and his mother. April sat there and listened. It hit her that the consequences of her and Jackson’s affair were far from over.
______________________________
Harper saw the shadow step in front of his room door. He looked up and saw Catherine standing there.
“How are you?” she asked
“I’m better” he replied
“Good. Everyone will be relieved to hear that, especially Jackson”
Harper gave her a confused look.
“He feels horrible about that argument you two had. I know he said something he regretted but I’m not mad at him, cause I probably would have done the same”
“Catherine……” he began but she cut him off
“How could you tell him something like that?” she asked walking further into the room “How dare you suggest Lydia isn’t his daughter?”
“We don’t know for sure if she’s his” he stated
“Have you not seen that little girl?”
“You’re the one that told me April was married to another man at the time, for all we know she could be his.” He said “I don’t want him to focus so much time on this daughter that may not be his. This little family he supposedly has and work is going to be too much pressure and eventually he….”
“He’ll leave?” Catherine questioned. She saw the look on Harper’s face and knew that she was right. She walked further into the room “He’s not his father Harper”
“Henry had just started a family with you, and he was getting involved in the Avery foundation, just like Jackson is right now. And what happened? All of this was too much and he left” Harper explained “What if Jackson leaves too? What am I supposed to do with the foundation?”
“So this is all just about the foundation?” Catherine asked with her brow raised “You bought up this Lydia thing so Jackson would forget about Lydia and focus on the foundation?”
“Well…….”
“I get that the foundation is important to you, but doesn’t that seem a little selfish?” she asked
“It may be, but I’m not going through another Henry crisis” he answered
“So that’s what this is about?” Catherine and Harper heard from the door way
They both turned to see Jackson there.
“So this is all about dad?” he asked
“Jackson, I just don’t want a repeat of the past” Harper said
“There won’t be a repeat” Jackson said stepping further into the room
“And how do you know that?”
“Cause I’m not him” Jackson stressed “I will never leave April and Lydia, no matter how hard being a father is or how hard my job gets”
“But Jackson…”
“I’m not done!” he cut off his grandfather “We both know that me, mom or the foundation wasn’t the reason he left. It was the pressure of being Harper Avery’s son that got to him. As hard as it is being your grandson, I’m not going to let it hinder my role as a father, a doctor, or maybe one day, a husband”
And with that, Jackson turned and quickly left the room.
Harper knew he might have pushed it too far with his grandson this time.

"Are you ready to talk now?" April asked
“Huh?" Jackson said looking up from his breakfast
After his talk with Harper the night before at the hospital, Jackson came home looking a bit down. April had noticed and decided to ask about it."You came back from the hospital last night looking upset" April pointed out, walking over to Jackson who was sitting on a stool at the kitchen island "Thought you might want to talk"
He placed his fork down and turned to face her "Found out why grandpa bought up the whole Lydia thing" he said
"Why did he?" she asked
"He thinks I'll leave"
"Leave?"
"He thinks I'll get too overwhelmed with what I have on my plate, and leave, like my dad did, and leave the foundation without an heir I guess" he explained
'"Oh" April said, hearing him mention his father.
Although she and Jackson have been best friends, his father was a topic that rarely came up. And if it did, he would quickly move on to something else.
"Well, what did you say?" she asked
"I told him that I wasn't my dad" he said taking her hand pulling her between his legs "And that I'll never let the stress of being an Avery, a dad and a surgeon, drive me to the point where I'll leave you and Lydia. I saw what my dad leaving did to my mom, and I know how it felt. I would never want to put you two through that"
To April, it was quite satisfying to hear him say that. She removed her hands from his, and wrapped them around his neck, before leaning in and kissing him.
"You won't leave us?" she whispered against his lips after pecking them
"Never" he said before pulling her in for another kiss
Their impromptu make out session, however, was interrupted by a giggling Lydia. Jackson groaned as April pulled her face away from his and turned around in his arms. There stood Lydia with a smile and red cheeks on her face. Seeing her parents kissing was cute and gross all at the same time. Well, mostly gross.
"Are you guys done now?" she asked
"No" Jackson said under his breath
"Yes sweetie we are" April answered loudly, slightly nudging Jackson with her elbow "What do you need?"
"Can I ask a question?" the little girl asked
"You just did" Jackson stated with a smirk
"Daddyyyyyyy" Lydia whined
"Ok, Ok, ask away" he said
"Can I make a get well card for grandpa Harper?"
"Sure you can sweetie" April answered
"Yay!" Lydia cheered running back to her room
"So......" Jackson said turning April around to face him "Where were we?"
"Jackson stop!" April giggled slapping his arm
If the slap wasn't enough to stop him, the knock on the door sure was.
"Seriously?" he groaned
April pulled herself from Jackson and headed to the door. A confused look enlightened her face when she saw Cristina standing on the other side.
"Cristina...."
"Hey" Cristina grinned “what are you guys up to?"
"What are you doing here?" April asked
"Can't I come visit my favorite family?" she asked
"Meredith still not back yet?" April asked
"No" Cristina groaned lowering her head, walking into the apartment "Derek's sisters are keeping her hostage"
"And what about Alex, Callie and Arizona?'" April asked, closing the door and walking in behind her
"As annoying as your kid is, Sophia and that spawn of the Evil Spawn are still more annoying"
"Hey, I'm not annoying" Lydia said, coming from her room, paper and color pencils in hand.
"Yes you are" Cristina argued
"Well......" Lydia began to think of an insult "You're a meanie"
"That is true" Cristina agreed, before turning to Jackson "Hey pretty boy"
"Aren't you supposed to be monitoring my grandfather?" he asked, annoyed by the heart surgeon's sudden appearance.
"Don't worry about it; I got Owen and Ross on it. Why are you being such a grouchy pants?" She asked catching his annoyed tone
"I saw him and mommy kissing" Lydia tattled
Cristina's head went back as she let out a loud laugh, as Lydia stood there giggling away.
"Where's your handy dandy pillow?" she asked getting a stifled laugh from April
Jackson rolled his eyes as he got up from the stool and headed to his bedroom. He was not about to be made fun of in his own apartment.
"Oh come on Avery, you're no fun" Cristina teased
"Mommy, can you help me with my card for grandpa Harper?" Lydia asked once the laughing died down
"Sure sweetie" April said as the two walked over to the kitchen island
After removing Jackson's plate, April allowed Lydia to climb up on the stool and spread her materials out on the flat surface, that way, she could help her while dealing with the dirty dishes.
"Dr Cristina, you could help too"
"Sure, why not" Cristina agreed "As long as I get to sign my name on it too"
"Ok" Lydia grinned

"You wanted to see me?"
It was later that day. Jackson, April and Cristina had returned to the hospital for their shifts, leaving Lydia in the daycare. Jackson was dealing with a delinquent resident, when his mother approached him and told him his grandfather wanted to speak with him. Although he didn't want to, a stern look from Catherine made him do otherwise.
He was now standing in the doorway of Harper's hospital room, waiting to hear what the old man had to say. Harper sat up in his bed and cleared his throat.
"After some hard thinking, and a tongue lashing from your mother, I realized that what I said was wrong. Questioning April's character and your paternity was out of line. And thinking you would leave, like your father did, was unfair. You're right, you're nothing like him. Instead of trying to live up to my legacy, like he did, you're creating your own, and that's what being an Avery truly is. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that I'm sorry"
There was a silence in the room. Harper looked at his grandson, waiting for a response.
"I've been doing some thinking too" Jackson finally said "I understand where your doubt came from, I had a little of it too at first. April and I talked about it and I believe her, nothing ever gave me a reason not to. I mean, look at Lydia. Yeah she looks a lot like her mom but sometimes I see so much of myself in her too. And like I said last night, I'm not going to leave anyplace or anyone. Not Lydia, not April, not mom and not you"
Silence fell over them once again, before Harper spoke again.
"So are we good now? Can we go back to Pressuring Annoying Grandfather and Independent Grandson?" he asked
Jackson chuckled "Yes, we're good"
"Good. Now I can sleep peacefully, without hearing your mother's mouth every minute" Harper said, leaning back into the bed
"Don't sleep yet" Jackson stopped him "Someone's here to see you"
A confused look appeared on Harper's face as he sat up again. Jackson left the room and returned some seconds later with a grinning Lydia. She had accompanied her father to the room and waited outside with Catherine while they had their talk.
"Hi" she said
"Hello, what brings you by?"
"I made you a card" Lydia smiled
She left Jackson's side and ran up to the bed, before climbing up and sitting herself at the edge of it.
"Here you go" she said, holding up her home made card up
"Thank you" Harper smiled, taking it from her
On the front was a cut out of a cartoon heart, with a hello kitty band aid stuck on it. There was an arrow pointing to it, with "Grandpa's Heart" written at one end. On the inside was "Get better soon Grandpa. From: Lydia, Mommy, Daddy and Dr. Cristina". He felt a bit guilty. While he was questioning his relation to this little girl, she was far from questioning hers to him. After looking over the card, he looked up at her and smiled.
"Thank you, I really like it" he said
“You’re welcome" she grinned
"I especially like the kitten band aid on my heart" he added with a smile
"That was my idea!" she boasted "And the heart was Dr. Cristina's. She's a heart doctor you know"
"I know" Harper smiled "I was a heart doctor too"
"Really?" Lydia asked eyes widened
"Yes"
"Cool" she grinned "I want to be a heart doctor too"
"I thought you wanted to be a trauma surgeon like your mother" Jackson asked
"I change my mind" she simply answered
"You don't want to be a plastic surgeon like your father?" Harper asked
"No, plastic surgery is dumb and boring" the little girl answered , getting a chuckle from Harper
"Oh you are definitely an Avery" he chuckled "More of an Avery than your father even" he added, glancing over at Jackson
Jackson shook his head, then left the two, meeting up with April, Catherine and Richard, who were now sitting outside.
"So, is everything O.k now?" Catherine asked
"Yeah, it's O.K. He's in there now telling Lydia how much more of an Avery she is than I am" he said with a smile
Jackson had to admit, he enjoyed seeing that smile on his grandfathers face when he looked at Lydia’s card. It was one he hadn’t seen in a long time. Who knew that it would take a little curly head five year old to get Harper Avery to smile like that again.

“It’s getting late, we should go change, go get her and then head home” April said as the four of them sat outside of Harper’s room
It was later that night. Jackson and April had just finished their shifts and had decided to check on Harper before they left for the night.
“I don’t think she’s ready to leave” Jackson said, hearing his daughter giggle in the room
“Why don’t you guys just go, we’ll keep an eye on her” Catherine offered
“And from the little story we got about your nap time room incident, you need the alone time” Richard added with a smirk, getting a look from Jackson
“Are you sure? She can be a handful” April asked
“It’s ok April” Catherine said
“And she can talk your ear off, can you deal with that?” April threw back
“I can, I’m positive. We can both talk Richard’s ear off” Catherine said, getting a nod of approval from Richard
After some more convincing, April agreed and she and Jackson went into the room and wished Harper and Lydia a good night. After doing so, they left the room, did the same to Catherine and Richard, and then headed down the hall. Once they turned the corner, Jackson grabbed her hand and quickened their pace.
“Jackson!” April squealed at the sudden movement “Where are we going?”
He didn’t answer, and instead continued to pull her behind him. A few seconds later, he pulled her into an on call room, closed the door behind them, and then shoved her against the wall, pushing his lips against hers.
“What are you doing?” April asked against his lips. She knew exactly what he was doing, she just felt the need to ask.
“Using our granted alone time” he smiled against hers
Her hands flew around his neck as his hands gripped her thighs, lifting her off the floor and her legs around his waist. He walked over to the bunk beds and dropped her on the bottom bunk, before lowering himself between her legs and hungrily kissing her.
April moaned as she felt his hand move under her scrub top. Maybe they could this, maybe this wasn’t a bad idea, maybe everything will go smoothly after this. Maybe post adultery premarital sex with your baby daddy slash boyfriend wasn’t such a bad idea.
She released a breath as his lips moved to her neck, ready to go forward with it all.
But they both froze when they heard a throat cleared. They slowly turned their heads and stared as Cristina’s head peeked out from above the top bunk, her black curls hanging over the edge off the bed.
“Can you at least check the room first before you start attacking her face” she said before sitting up and jumping off the bed “You know what, I am tired of somehow getting indirectly involved in your sex life”
Their eyes followed her as she walked towards the door.
“Karma’s a bitch” she mumbled before opening the door and walking out
The two stared at the door for a few seconds before bursting out into a laugh. Jackson rolled of April, holding his stomach as he laughed, while April laid there and did the same.
“You know what, maybe…..”April began to say before Jackson stepped in
“Maybe this is a sign?”
“Yeah” she confirmed “Maybe it is”
