Chapter 4: Thanksgiving with The Kepners

April handed the money to the teenage girl, before she walked to the door.

"Thanks again Lindsey" April said following behind her

"No problem Dr. Kepner" the girl smiled before walking out the door

April locked the front door before returning to the living room.

"You know we wouldn't have to pay a babysitter if we had just dropped her off at Karev's" Jackson said as he sipped the beer he had gotten from the fridge earlier

He sat, leaned back on the couch, with his suit jacket unbuttoned and opened up, and his tie loose.

"How are we supposed to keep this a secret if we brought her there?" April asked

She stood there in a blue cocktail dress and black heels. Her hair was pinned up, a bit messier than how it was before she left, due to the make out session she partook in, in the car before they came up.

"Uh, we just tell them" Jackson answered

"No" April snapped "We're not telling him, he can't keep his mouth shut. The whole hospital will know we're dating by midnight"

They, as in April, had decided to keep the whole dating thing a secret for a while. The last time they were together, things didn't turn out so good, so they wanted to keep things between them until they were sure about how their relationship would work out. Lydia was unaware that her parents were dating, but she was a smart girl, she knew something was up. She could sense something was different between them.

"Ugh, these heels" April groaned as she walked over to the couch and sat next to Jackson

"We could've gone to the movies, where you could of worn flats, but noooo, you wanted a fancy date" Jackson teased

"Going to the movies to watched some random movie isn't romantic" April said as she pulled her heels off

"We could have seen some romantic chick flick or something" he argued

"Still not so romantic"

April leaned back and stretched her legs out and wiggled her toes, giving them the well needed space.

"You should leave, it's getting late" she said

Jackson placed his beer bottle on the coffee table and scooted closer to her on the couch.

"Or maybe….we could continue, what we started in the car" Jackson lowly whispered, referring to their little make out session

He dipped his head down to her neck, and lightly brushed his lips against it.

"I don't think we should be doing this" April whispered, trying to hold back a moan.

"Why not?" Jackson asked as he planted a kiss on her neck, then on her jawline, and then the corner of her lip

Instead of answering, she captured his lips in hers. Her hand instantly went to the nape of his neck, pulling him closer, as his hands went to her waist. The make out session soon got heated and Jackson's hand slowly rested on her leg, which wasn't cover by her dress. His hands then began moving up her thigh, under her dress.

April tried pulling her body away, but her body didn't want to. She knew what his hand up her dress meant, and she didn't want to get into that.

She hand made a decision to not have sex with Jackson. Sex complicated things the last time and now they had a child. She wanted a different experience this time. But her body wasn't agreeing with her brain.

She had been without Jackson and sex for 5 years! And few weeks ago, her body had gotten a taste of it again. And because of that, it felt like her body had refused to have another 5 years without Jackson Avery.

Just as his fingers reached her underwear, her brain had gotten control and she pulled her lips away from Jackson's.

"We should really stop….." April said against his lips as he tried to reconnect them

"Why not?" he asked, repeating his previous question

"Because…." April began, but was cut off by the one voice she certainly didn't want to hear

"Mommy?" Lydia's sleepy voice asked

The two quickly pulled apart and Jackson removed his hands from under April's dress and placed it in his lap. They both turned around, looking over the back of the couch.

"That's why" April whispered

There stood Lydia, with Mr. Avery Bear in her hands and a sleepy look on her face.

"Daddy?" she questioned once noticing that her dad was there as well. Her face instantly brightened "Daddy!"

She ran from behind the couch to in front of it, and climbed onto it, situating herself on Jackson's lap. She looked between her parents, something was up. They had the same look on their faces like the one she has when she eats cookies or candy when she wasn't supposed to.

She ignored the looks and placed her attention back on Jackson.

"I'm awake!" she grinned

"I can see that" Jackson smiled

When picking April up earlier, she wanted to go along with them. When she was told she couldn't, she insisted that Jackson come back later that night to play with her, but he told her that by the time they were back, she would be asleep. She promised him that she would be awake when they got back, so she could play.

"Can we play now?" Lydia asked

"Sorry I can't" Jackson frowned

"Why not?" she asked with a frown

"Well it's late, and I have to get to work early tomorrow" he answered

"Ok" she whispered poking her lips out

"Aw don't be sad" April pouted at her "Remember, Grandma and Grandpa are coming tomorrow and you don't want to be all tired and sleepy when they get here right?"

A small smile appeared on the little girl's face as she nodded. She hadn't seen her grandparents since she moved to Seattle. She had only talked to them on the phone, so she was excited to finally see them after this long period of time.

"Goodnight daddy!" Lydia finally said kneeling on his lap, kissing his cheek, "Goodnight mummy" she added leaning over to her mother and kissing her cheek

She jumped off Jackson's lap and scurried off to her bedroom.

"Guess I should leave now" Jackson said pushing himself off the couch

"Yeah" April said as she followed suit

She walked him over to the door, then kissed his cheek and saying goodbye. The smile on her face fell once Jackson left. Her daughter maybe excited about seeing her parents after a long time, but she was more afraid than happy.

April stood nervously by the exit terminal, waiting for her parents to come out.

Thanksgiving was in two days and the Kepners were all coming to Seattle to have dinner with April and Lydia.

"Mom, Dad!" April called out as she spotted her mother and father exiting the terminal

"April!" they both called back at the same time

With smiles on their faces, they walked over to her. Even though she was a little nervous about their visit, she smiled back. She did miss them after all. Her mother was the first to envelope her with a tight hug, followed by her father, who added a kiss on the cheek.

After the sweet greetings, she lead them out to the car, and soon enough, they were on their way. And after commenting on how nice they thought Seattle was, Karen began questioning April.

"So how's life going?" she asked from the passenger seat beside April

"It's going great" April smiled as both Jackson and Lydia crossed her mind

"Where's Lydia?" Joe asked from the back seat, he had remembered Lydia saying she was coming to the airport with her mother

"She's at school" April answered "she wanted to miss a little of school to come with me, but I let her stay"

"When are we going to see her?" her mother asked

"Well….." April said looking down at her watch "…..school will be over in about 10 minutes so we can go get her"

They both nodded in agreement and began questioning about Lydia's school. April smiled and answered their questions. 'Maybe this visit wouldn't be that bad' she thought as she quickly texted Jackson.

They had gotten to Lydia's school just as the kids were running out of the entrance doors. After a minute or two of waiting, they spotted Lydia's tiny frame emerging from between the "big kids". After the disappointment of being told that she couldn't go to the airport, April told Lydia that Jackson would be picking her up from school, so she was certainly confused when she saw her mother's car. The confused look instantly changed to an excited one when the windows rolled down and she saw her grandparents sitting in the car. She grinned as she ran down the steps and to the car. Joe quickly opened the door to the back seat and allowed her to come in.

"Grandma, Grandma!" she yelled as she jumped on her grandfather giving him a hug, and doing the same with her grandmother "I'm so happy you guys are here!" she grinned

"We're happy to be here too sweetheart" Karen answered

Lydia settled in her seat and put her seat belt on, with a little help from Joe

"I thought you were supposed to come to the airport to get us?' he asked as April drove off

"I was, but mummy told me I had to spend the whole day at school" she frowned

"Well you have to sweetheart. You don't want to miss out on all the learning" Karen said

"But the stuff they teach are too easy" Lydia whined "And it's boring"

April shook her head at her daughter's comment.

"That's a pretty necklace you have there" Joe said, pointing out the necklace, with the letters "LJKA" on it that hanged around his granddaughter's neck

"Thank you" she smiled "My daddy gave it to me for my birthday. It stands for Lydia Jackie Kepner Avery!" she grinned

April saw her parents move uneasily when they heard "daddy". Lydia continued to talk about the gift Jackson gave her, unaware of how uncomfortable the situation was for her mother and grandparents. She didn't know her parents past and how she came about. She didn't know that her mother's affair and divorce from Matthew, had caused a lot of arguments between her mother and her family, mostly her grandmother. She certainly didn't know that her grandparents still could not forgive her mother for what she had done.

FLASHBACK

April's sisters and mother gushed over her as she sat at the table. The Kepners were having a little family gathering at their farm and April was there, along with her sisters and a few extended family.

Her mother and sisters had noticed the tiny bump under her shirt when she came in and dragged her in the kitchen to talk about her finally having a baby.

"I can't believe it!" Kimmie smiled

"Duckie is having a baby!" Alice squealed, and her mother and sisters joined in

"O-M-gosh, our babies are going to grow up together!" an also pregnant Libby squealed

"I need to get out of here" Joe said covering his ears from the squeals. He bent over and kissed April on the forehead "Congratulations" he smiled

"Thanks dad" she smiled back

He gave her shoulder a quick squeeze before exiting the kitchen.

"How far along are you?" Libby asked "I'm guessing about four months"

"I am" April confirmed

The women squealed again.

"I'm so happy fo you and Matthew" Alice grinned

"Speaking of my son-in-law, where is he?" Karen asked "Didn't he come along with you?"

"Um….no" April answered nervously "He couldn't come"

"Why not?" her mother asked

"Uh...he had some things to do" she answered, trying to look as truthful as possible

It had been about a month since Matthew had left her. His parents didn't know about it and neither did hers. Matthew had decided to allow her to tell her family the situation first, before he informed his.

She wanted to do it face to face and not over the phone and had chosen that day to tell them, knowing that it might be the last time in a few months she'd be able to see them. But she was having trouble coming up with how she should tell them, so she decided that maybe later that day, when most of the extended family members had left, she would break the news to them. So from then, she spent the day, with a fake smile on her face, dreading telling them.

It was 11:30 that night. April sat alone at the same table, staring down at her ring less hand. She couldn't count the amount of times she'd been asked about her ring that day. The answer was always the same, 'it was getting a little tight, so I had to take it off'.

The rest of her family was gone, leaving her parents and sisters, along with their families, in the big farm house. 'Now would be a good time'. she thought. Her nieces and nephew were finally in bed and the rest of her family were in the living room chatting.

"Are you ok?" April heard behind her

She turned and looked up, spotting her mother standing in the entrance to the kitchen

"I'm fine" April answered, giving a small smile

"No, you're not" her mother disagreed walking in "You've been acting a little strange today"

April sighed, she had thought that she played the part of 'Excited Mother To Be' pretty well.

"What's wrong?" Karen asked, sitting on the chair opposite to April's

It was time. She had to talk about it now, or she may never get the chance to do it again, since she had a flight to Cleveland the next day.

"It's about Matthew...and the baby" she whispered after a few seconds of silence.

A smile appeared on Karen's face.

"Are you worried that Matthew isn't ready for a baby?" she asked, but didn't wait for an answer "Honey I thought the same thing when I got pregnant with Libby, and I bet your sisters thought the same thing about their husbands when they first got pregnant" she then took April's hand into hers "But trust me, when Matthew looks down at his son, or daughter, and realizes that they have his eyes, or his nose, or his lips..."

April cringed as her mother went down a list of features her baby would possibly have of Matthew. She couldn't just sit there and hear this. She couldn't just sit there and let her mother, or the rest of the family believe this. Her chest tightened, as she got ready to say the words.

"Matthew left me!" April managed to choke out

Karen stopped mid-sentence and stared at her daughter "What did you just say?" she asked

"Matthew left me" she said clearer this time

"What?" Karen said confused "Why would he leave you when you're pregnant with his child? How could he do that? I need to talk to him" she said getting ready to get up from the chair and head to the phone hanging on the wall

"It's not his baby" April choked out again, a bit hesitant

"What?" Karen asked again, more confused than she was before

April closed her eyes, she didn't want to repeat it.

"It's not his baby" she managed to say after a few seconds

April kept her head down, holding back the tears, waiting for her mother's reaction. She couldn't bear looking at her face, knowing how hurt she was. The room stayed quiet for a few minutes before her mother spoke.

"Is it…..that man's baby?" she asked, referring to Jackson

"Yes" she nodded seconds later

"April…" her mother said disappointingly, shaking her head

Karen pushed back the chair and got up. She began walking back and forth.

"Mom listen…." April began but was cut off by her mother's loud voice

"I can't believe you!" Karen said, causing the tears April was trying to hold back to finally break free "I raised you better than this! You know better! I told you to stay away from him! I told you to stop!"

Karen had remembered her conversation with April a few months ago, when she found out that her daughter was sleeping with another man. She remembered telling her to stop, and work things out with Matthew.

April bowed her head again as the tears came flowing down her face. She didn't have any response for her mother, because she knew she was right.

"What's going on here?" Joe asked walking into the kitchen, with his daughters and their husbands right behind him.

"April are you ok?" Libby asked hearing the sobs coming from her sister

Eyes flicked between April and Karen, waiting for an answer.

Aren't you going to tell them what you did?" her mother asked looking at her

All eyes were now on April, waiting for an answer, but she didn't give one.

"Let me tell you what she did…" Karen began, realizing that her daughter wasn't going to say a word "She cheated on her husband, and now she's pregnant with that man's baby. And because of her stupid mistake, Matthew left her!"

Libby, Kimmie and Alice's face changed from an expression of confusion to one of shock. Joe looked more disappointed than angry as he stood there looking at his daughter. April's brothers-in-law quickly left the room after sharing glances with each other. This felt like something the immediate family should be dealing with.

"April…is this true?" Alice asked, wanting confirmation

"Yes" April answered looking up at them

She cringed inside, looking at the faces that were staring right back at her.

"I'm sorry" April choked out "I know what I did was wrong…."

"No!" Karen cut her off "What you did was stupid, dishonest, disrespectful and dishonorable April! I can't believe my own daughter would do something like that. Matthew is a good man!"

"I know!" April said

"Then why would you do something like that to him?" she asked

"Cause…."

"You know what, I don't even want to know" Karen said before quickly walking out of the kitchen, Joe following right behind her.

April's sobs got louder as more tears ran down her face. Not only were her parents disappointed in her, she was disappointed in herself.

"April….." Alice said sympathetically as she took a seat next to her

The other sisters did the same. Kimmie sat on the other side of April, while Libby sat next to Alice. Kimmie grabbed her sister's hand and pulled her close to her, allowing her to cry on her shoulder.

"It's gonna be ok" she said, rubbing her back

The three looked at each other, how was their family going to deal with this?

END OF FLASHBACK

"Duckie!" April heard as she opened her front door

She groaned inwardly. When were her sisters going to retire that name?

"Hi!" she responded with a wide smile on her face "Hi guys" she added with a little gasp as she spotted her nieces and nephew "You guys got so big"

The children looked up to her and smiled before running to her and huging her legs and waist. After giving each child a hug, she moved on to greeting her sisters.

"Is it ok?" I hope it's not too small" April asked after closing the front door and turning to her sisters

April had turned her living room into a large dinning room to fit all of her family.

"It's a little crapped but it's fine" Kimmie said

Just then her parents came in from the back

"Grandma, grandpa!" the children cheered running to their grandparents, hugging them

"Hi" the elders greeted them with a wide smile, hugging them back

"Hey, where's Lydia?" Caroline, Libby's daughter asked. She was the same age as Lydia and the two were very close. They didn't see much of each other, but when they did, they were inseparable.

"Yea, where is she?" Alice asked

"She's with Jackson, he's bringing her over right now" April answered

"And he's late" Karen added, not pleased with the fact that her granddaughter wasn't there yet

April tried not to roll her eyes

"He can't even drop his daughter off on time" Karen added again

"Mom!" April said annoyed "They'll be here soon"

As if on queue, there was a knock on the door

"That's probably them right now" April said as she walked back to the door

Once she opened the door she spotted Jackson. And next him was Lydia, who was wearing a totally different dress from the one she had picked out for her.

"Hi mummy" grinned Lydia, as she swayed her little floral print dress

"Sorry about being late" Jackson quickly apologized "We had a little accident"

"Accident?" April asked worried, immediately thinking at had something to do with the car

"She got her dress dirty, so I had to pick out another one from the bunch my mom bought her" he explained "I hope this one is ok" he added pointing to the dress

"it's beautiful" she complimented, Catherine always did have good taste

Lydia ran past April into the apartment to greet her aunts and cousins.

"How did her dress get dirty?" April asked once Lydia was gone

"Popsicle"

"You gave her a Popsicle?" April whispered through her teeth "You know how messy she gets with those"

"I know, and I didn't give it to her" Jackson began to explain "When I asked, she said she was hungry, so she took one out of the freezer"

April shook her head, mentally scolding her daughter.

"Well thanks for bringing her over, you can pick her up tomorrow morning"

Jackson nodded in response, but before he could say goodbye and leave, Lydia ran back to the door and grabbed his hand.

"Come say hi" she said pulling him inside, towards the rest of the family "Everybody, this is my daddy, Dr. Jackson Avery" she introduced with a grin

"Hi" Jackson greeted with a simple nod as he stepped forward to shake April's parents hands.

Joe politely shook his hand, giving a small nod.. When he stretched out his hand to Karen, she simply looked at his hand then looked up at him. April shook her head at her mother as Lydia looked on in confusion.

"Ok..." Jackson lowly said pulling his hand back

He turned and did the same to the Kepner sisters, each giving him a wide smile, as they refused his hand shake and hugged him instead. He then felt a tug on his jeans. He looked down a little girl, around Lydia's age, standing there

"I'm Caroline" she greeted, stretching her hand out

"Hi Caroline" he smiled, shaking her tiny hand

"And I'm Amber!" Kimmie's daughter smiled

"And I'm Cathlyne" Libby's eldest added

Jackson said hi to them as he shook their hands

"And that's Joshua" Lydia, who was stuck to her father's side, said as she pointed out her two year old cousin, who was slowly backing away, due to his shyness

Jackson got down to the little boy's level.

"Hey little man" he said, putting his hand out for a high five

The little boy looked at Jackson, who was sporting a polite smile. He slowly walked up to him, slapped his hand, and quickly ran back to his mother, Alice. The room erupted in a small laughter, Karen stayed silent.

Jackson then turned to Lydia.

"Time for me to go. I'll see you tomorrow"

"Can't you stay?" she asked with a frown

"No, I can't" he answered

"Then where are you going to spend thanksgiving?"

"Meredith's invited me to big thanksgiving dinner at her house, so I'm going over there"

"Oh" she said looking down with a pout

"Don't worry about it, we'll hang out tomorrow" he tried to comfort her "I'll bring you a slice of pie from Meredith's..." he added, hoping that would cheer her up, and it did

"Ok" she said with a smile

"Good" he smiled "Bye munchkin" he said kissing he forehead, before ruffling her curls, as she giggled in response

He quickly said goodbye to the others and walked towards the door, April following close behind

"Sorry about my mom" she apologized once they were at the door

'It's ok" he said with a smile "See you tomorrow?"

"Yea" April answered with a smile "Bye"

As much as the two wanted to kiss each other goodbye, they knew that that wasn't the right time or place.

"Bye" he said before walking out

April closed the door behind him and walked back to the living room. She was quickly approached by her older sister.

"I can see why you named your pig after him" she whispered with a grin "and why you had an affair"

'Did she drink before she got here' April thought

April rolled her eyes and walked into the kitchen, where her mother quietly worked. Not wanting to cause trouble, she finished up preparing her dishes, before bringing it to the table.

"…..and there was tons of blood!" Lydia exclaimed describing one of her mother's surgeries she got to see as she dug into her whip cream topped pumpkin pie

"Ew, that's gross" Amber said turning up her nose

"It was cool!" Lydia grinned

"Did you save the man Auntie April?" Caroline asked

"I did" April smiled causing the little girl to clap excitedly

"Who took you to see that scary surgery?" Karen asked

"It's not a scary surgery grandma" Lydia corrected "And my daddy brought me"

"Oh" Karen said, raising her brows "I see"

April looked at her mother, giving her the "not now" look, increasing the already present tension. Noting it, Joe decided to change the subject.

"So, Lydia, do you like your school?" he asked

"I's really cool. They have a big playground and a huge library, with lots of books. But my class is boring, they only teach easy stuff" the little girl answered, frowning at the last part

Before anyone could respond to Lydia's answer, Karen spoke up

"I couldn't help but notice the amount of schools we passed on our way to here after picking Lydia up. Why didn't you enroll her in any of those schools? They're much closer." Karen asked

"Well it's one of the best private school around and Lydia likes it there. Some of my co-workers' kids go there, so she has some familiar faces there. Plus Jackson thought it was best since…" April said before her mother intervened

"Of corse, Jackson…." Said in a somewhat annoyed voice

"What's that supposed to mean?" April asked as she frowned her brows, making a confused expression

"So he knows what's best for my granddaughter after only being in her life for a few months? Please" Karen said with a small chuckle

April instantly got pissed and her sisters noticed.

"Hey kids, why don't you guys go play in Lydia's room" Kimmie said

"But we're not done with our pie yet" her eldest frowned

"Mummy can we eat our pies in my room?" Lydia asked, looking up at her mother

April momentarily put on a fake smile, and looked down at her daughter "Sure sweetie"

"Yay" Lydia cheered "Let's go!" she said to her cousins as they jumped off their chairs, grabbed their plates and headed to her room

Alice helped Joshua down from his chair, and allowed him to follow the girls to the room.

The table was silent, the tension was so thick, you could cut it with a knife. April was at a point where she was tired of her mother's attitude.

"Look….you can talk about Jackson however you want in my presence, but you will not speak of him in that manner around Lydia!" April said through gritted teeth, as she pointed to Lydia's room

"Why not? You don't want her to know about how he ruined your life?!" Karen asked

'Ruined my life?' April repeated in her head. At that instant, April's mind went back to a similar conversation she had with her mother months ago.

FLASHBACK

"Mom?" April said surprised

She had heard a knock on the door and when she opened, her mother stood at her door step.

"Surprise!" Karen grinned

"What are you doing here?" April nervously asked, trying to look excited

"Just came for a surprise visit. You didn't come home for New Years and you haven't called since Christmas, so I just wanted to see how you and Lydia were doing"

"Oh"

"Hope I'm not disturbing or anything" her mother said walking past her, into the house

'Yes you are' April thought but decided to say the opposite instead "no" she fake smiled as she closed the door

"How have you two been?" Karen asked as she walked into the living room

"We've been good" April answered following behind

Her mother looked around the room, something seemed off. The room looked a bit empty.

"Why is it so dull and empty in here?" she asked

"Uh…." April began, trying to think of a quick lie "just doing a little redecorating for the New Year. Not sure what I'm going with yet

"Oh" her mother answered

April breathed a little sigh of relief that should her mother off her back until she was ready to tell the truth

"Mummy, I'm done packing up my stuff" Lydia said running down the stairs "Grandma!" she gasped as she spotted her in the living room

"Hi sweetie" Karen said opening her arms, awaiting her hug

Lydia ran up to her, giving her grandmother one of her tightest hugs

"What are you doing here?" the little girl asked

"I came to see you" the woman answered with a smile "So, how's my little princess doing?"

"Great!" Lydia grinned

"So what were you packing upstairs? Redecorating your room too?"

April's eye's widened. Apparently, she would have to tell the truth sooner than later.

"No, I'm not decorating. I'm packing up my stuff so we could send it to our new home" the little girl answered

"What new home?" Karen asked confused

"Our new home in Seattle" she answered

"Lydia, there's a sandwich and a glass of juice in the kitchen for you, you eat and I'll come in, in a bit"

Lydia nodded and headed to the kitchen, leaving April with her mother.

"So you lied"

"Mom….."

"Seattle? You're going to Seattle?"

"Yes"

"Why?"

"You know why"

"April…"

"She needs to know who he is Mom. I can't keep this from her anymore"

"How are you going to explain this to her? How are you going to explain to her that he ruined your life?"

"I'm not! All she needs to know is who her father is" April answered "She needs him mom"

"What if he can't do it? What if he isn't capable of being a father? What if he doesn't want to be in her life?"

"Then I'll just have to deal with it. But I have to try. He deserves to know and she deserves to know"

"What is this all about? Do you still think he loves you? Do you really think you can go back, tell him about Lydia, get married and live happily ever after?" Karen said as she chuckled a bit

"What is your problem with him?"

Not waiting for a response from her mother, April walked out and headed to the kitchen

"He ruined your life!" Karen called out

Her mother may not like the idea, but it was one of those things she had to do.

END OF FLASHBACK

"What is your problem?" April asked after a small trip down memory lane "And why do you keep saying that he ruined my life? Yes, I get it, what we did was wrong and we both acknowledge it and sorry about, but HE didn't ruin my life. It was my doing too mom. not just his. And why are you not over this? It's been more than five years! Matthew, the one person you would think would never be over it, IS over it! He's forgiven me and moved on with his life, why can't you?" April said "And by the way, Jackson's a good dad"

"A good dad? April he got her dress, the one that I bought her..." Karen emphasized "dirty!"

"Jackson didn't get her dress dirty, Lydia got her dress dirty" April corrected

"And what about him sending her that school?" Karen asked

"What's wrong with sending your child to one of the best schools around?" April asked "And it was both our decisions, not just his"

"April, he's taking her to see you cut people open!" her mother said trying to make a point

"And how is that any different from dad teaching us how to birth horses and slaughter pigs? Dad taught us what he knows, which is farming. Jackson's doing the same thing, just with surgery"

April looked at her mother, waiting for a response, but she didn't have one.

"Yea it's only been a few months of him being a hands on dad, but he's good at it, and he's getting better. Some things are a little harder for him to deal with but he's getting there."

April got up and flung her napkin, that was resting on her lap, to the side in frustration.

"He's a good dad, and she loves him" she said before turned away from the table

"And I love him too" she whispered to herself as she walked away

Jackson sat up in his bed as he read through some paperwork. He heard footsteps in front of his door and quickly looked up. Lydia stood there in her pajamas, holding Mr. Avery Bear in her hands.

"Lydia, what are you doing up?" he asked

"I can't sleep" she frowned

"Want to sleep here?" he asked patting the pillow next to his on his bed

She quickly nodded and ran towards the bed. Instead of lying down, she sat up next to him and placed her bear on her lap.

"What are you doing?" she asked

"Paper work" Jackson answered, his eyes glued to the paper

A silence fell between them. After dinner with her grandparents and aunts, Lydia had something to ask her father and it couldn't wait.

"Daddy?"

"Yes" Jackson answered not looking up from his paper

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure"

Lydia a deep breath "Did you do something bad?

Jackson looked up at his daughter confused "why are you asking?"

"Well…." she began "I heard grandma say that you ruined mummy's life" she said

Jackson was taken aback by his daughter's statement. They were obviously talking about the affair, but she didn't know that.

"No Lydia, I didn't do anything bad" he answered

"So what are they talking about?" she asked

"I don't know" he lied, how was he supposed to explain an affair to her

Lydia wasn't satisfied with the answer, but she dropped it for now. She was a smart little girl, and she knew something wasn't quite right.
