Chapter 26

The doctors once again found themselves discussing Mason Martel's case. This time though, the discussion was a bit different.

"Are you sure that's what's going on?" Meredith asked

"What else could it be?" April asked

When Jackson got home the day before, she told him her thoughts and plan to prove it. He had insisted that they talked to the board members first to share her idea.

"Kepner could be right," Cristina said "I had a patient similar to that our intern year"

"Yeah, I remember her" Meredith added

"The problem is, you're not sure," Derek said his piece

"And that's a serious accusation to make Kepner," Owen said

"I know, and that's why I came up with this plan, to see if I'm right. If I'm wrong we don't tell them anything"

"I'm in," Arizona said, eager to find a way to get out of the lawsuit

"I think it's a good idea" Callie joined in

"Me too," Cristina said, a bit too excited to see the drama that would unfold if April was right

"You already know I'm in" Jackson nodded at his wife

April looked at the remaining board members, hoping for a positive reaction. They looked at each other before Owen spoke for the three of them.

"Fine, you can test your theory," he said "But to make things easier and to cause no drama, Jo will have to assist you since she's Mason's doctor now. You are not to be in that room, let Jo handle the parents. Agreed?"

"And you'll have to come up with a better plan than that" Derek added

April nodded, ready to hear whatever ideas they had that could help her prove her theory.

________

"Good morning," Jo said walking into Mason's room with her intern in tow

"Good morning" both parents and Mason answered

"How are you feeling today?" she asked the little boy

"Better" he simply answered

"That's good" she smiled at him "How are you liking the new room? Is there enough space for the both of you?" she directed the question to the parents

"It's perfect" the mother responded

"Good" she nodded "We're going draw some blood and urine for more tests now. I'll be back later with the results Ok?"

The parents nodded and the intern proceeded to draw the young boy's blood. Once they were done, both doctors exited the room. Once they were far enough, Jo turned to the intern.

"Get that blood to Dr. Kepner right away"

"Yes doctor"

The intern quickly left, leaving Jo to think of April's plan. She really hoped the trauma surgeon was right, she was ready to give up on figuring out what was wrong. When April had approached her the day before with a plan, she wasn't sure it would work. But she really hoped it was worth the shot.

________

"So the results are back in," Jo said standing in the room with her intern

"Have you figured out what's wrong?" Mr. Martel asked

"Well, I had a suspicion on what it could be when I was first brought onto this case" Jo began "But I didn't want to say anything until I was at least 75 percent sure. I'm at that point right now"

"So what is it?"

"Your son may have this rare infection. Because it's so rare it's usually hard to diagnose. To be sure that that's what it is, I had given him some specific medication to test it out. The tests from earlier showed that he's making some improvements"

The father sighed in relief.

"Thank you Dr. Wilson, you fixed my son," he said

"I'm not 100 percent sure on this Mr. Martel, so don't thank me just yet" she smiled at him

"But it's more progress than we've had, so thank you for that"

Jo and her intern nodded.

"So how long will he be here? Will he be going home soon?" he asked

"Well, if I'm right, he'll be ready to leave in the next day or two"

"That's great," Mr. Martel said relieved "Can I step out for a minute? I need to call my boss. I kind of quit my job yesterday so I could stay here with Mason. Boss wasn't too happy and gave me a few days to change my mind. Since Mason's going to be Ok, I can tell him I'll be back"

"Sure, go right ahead"

The excited father quickly left the room and made his way down the hall.

"Dr. Wilson"

The mother had finally spoken. She had remained quiet throughout the whole conversation.

"Yes ma'am"

"Are you sure he'll be ok?"

"Like I said, I'm not one hundred percent sure," Jo said before smiling "But I have a really good feeling about this"

The woman nodded, not saying anything more. She didn't look relieved by the news.

"Mrs. Martel, you don't look so good," Jo said, "Are you feeling Ok?"

"Just feeling a little light-headed" she answered

"It's probably because you've been too worried to eat properly. Why don't you let Dr. Romain here take you to the cafeteria to get something to eat"

"Uh...I don't need her to show me, I'll just go by myself"

With that, the woman left the room, leaving the two doctors alone with her sleeping son. Jo quickly turned to her intern.

"Guard the door," she said and the young doctor ran to the door "We have work to do"

________

Jo ran to Mason's room, not sure what to expect. They had been waiting patiently for something...though, they weren't sure what it was. So when she got that page for Mason, she quickly made her way to the room.

She certainly wasn't expecting what she saw when she entered the room.

The mother looked like she was panicking. The father was shaking his head in frustration. Frustrated at what? She didn't know yet. Mason was sitting up in bed. He certainly looked better.

"What's going on?" she asked

"I think something is wrong with Mason" his mother answered

"Nothing is wrong with him Macy. Look at him, he's feeling better" Mr. Martel said

"Well...all the other times he looked better too and he got sick as soon as we got home" she explained

"But things are different now"

"How would you know? You were never around all those times" she shot at him

"Don't you are put that against me!" his voice was raised now

"You just want him to be better so that you can go back to your stupid job and forget about us!"

"Hey, hey!" Jo said wanting to stop the arguing "I need you both to stop yelling"

Mason had looked upset and she knew she had to calm them down.

"No ma'am," she said turning to the woman "Mason is fine"

"He's not!"

"How do you know that?"

"I just know ok? A mother knows when something is wrong with her child"

"Macy, Mason is fine," his father said

"No he's not Jonah, I can feel it"

"Ok, how about this" Jo began, foreseeing another yelling match "We'll do some final tests on Mason. If the tests show that he's getting better, then he'll go home tomorrow. If not, then he'll have to stay and we'll have to figure out what else could be wrong with him. Is that ok?"

"Yes" the woman quickly nodded

"Ok," Mr. Martel said a few seconds later, just wanting it all to be over with

A few minutes later, Mason was wheeled out to get his final scans. Or at least that's what his parents thought. They were in for a big surprise.

________

A few hours later the boy's parents found themselves in a conference room in the hospital. The parents were nervous, neither knowing why they were there.

"Uh, Doctor...." Mr Martel began

"Hunt. Dr. Owen Hunt" the Chief introduced himself

"Dr. Hunt. Why are we here?"

"Is something wrong with Mason?" his ex-wife asked

"Your son is fine ma'am" Owen answered

"Then why are we here?"

Just then the doors opened, and in walked April, Arizona and the hospital's lawyer.

"What is she doing here?" he mother asked

"Macy it's ok," Mr. Martel said standing up and facing the two doctors "I know what this is about" he began "I blamed you for my son's sickness and was going to sue you. I know now that he just had this rare infection. I'm sorry for all the drama and the way that I've treated you"

"It's Ok Mr. Martel, we understand" April answered with a smile

Arizona smiled and nodded at his apology, knowing that the good mood in the room was about to change.

"Mr. Martel..." Owen said getting the man's attention "That apology was greatly appreciated, but the suit isn't the reason why we're here"

"Then what's this about?"

"You might need to sit down for this" April suggested

Sensing that it was something serious, he quickly took his seat.

"We know the real reason behind your son's symptoms," Owen said

"The rare infection" the mother answered

"I'm talking about the real reason," the Chief said, his gaze on the woman intensifying

"What are you talking about?" Mr. Martel asked

Owen put his hand in his coat pocket and pulled out a pill bottle, placing it on the table in front of them. The mother's face paled, while her ex-husband's was confused.

"I don't understand" the confusion was even in his voice

"You have been giving your son these pills to make him sick," Owen said to the mother

"How dare you!" she quickly said, "What kind of woman makes her own child sick?"

"We have proof," Owen said

He then pushed forward his tablet and pressed play. Mr. Martel watched as his ex-wife pulled the pill bottle out of her bag, took a pill out, and gave to their son, who seemed to have trouble swallowing it even with the help of water.

"Dr. Kepner suspected something like this was going on. We had Dr. Romain check your ex-wife's bag and when she told us about the bottle of pills, we got some fakes and switched it out when you left the room" Owen explained "As you can see in the video, she's giving him those pills"

The man looked at the woman next to him, waiting for a response.

"Jonah...."

"How could you do that?!" he asked

"That's not me, I'll never do something like that!"

"So the woman that's giving him these pills just so happens to look like you?"

"Yes" she hesitantly answered

Mr. Martel shook his head and smiled in mock amusement. He couldn't believe she was lying when the evidence was right in front of them.

Owen nodded at the lawyer who was still standing silently by the door. She opened the door and peeked outside, giving someone the signal to come in. It wasn't another doctor or lawyer. Instead, two police officers entered the room.

"What's going on?" Ms. Martel asked

No one answered, instead, Owen nodded towards her.

"Macy Martel" one of the officers began while the other stood next to her, indicating she stand up "You are under arrest for endangering the life of a minor..."

She quickly turned to her ex-husband

"Jonah," she said wanting help, but the man was too shocked and angry at it all to say anything

The look on his face told her that she wasn't getting any help, and she hesitantly stood up from her seat. The officer pulled her to the side and placed handcuffs on her. Hearing them lock into place set off a panic, and she needed to hear something from the father of her son.

"Jonah please" she pleaded as the officer began to lead her out of the room

He didn't look her way. Instead, he sat there and listened as she called his name while being led out.

"I'm sorry that you had to find out this way Mr. Martel" Owen said

"I...I just don't understand. Why would she do this? How could she do this?"

"Munchausen syndrome" April answered walking up to him and taking a seat

"What's that?"

"It's a mental condition where someone makes themselves or others sick to get attention" April explained "In this case, I think your ex-wife was trying to get your attention"

"My attention? Why?"

"Maybe she wanted you two to get back together" Arizona answered

"And thought getting your son sick was the only way to get you back" April added

"That explains a lot," he said, thinking back to his marriage

The many calls he got while away on work made sense. It had gotten worse once they got divorced. Almost every week his son was sick and she would always suggest that he return home.

"Mr. Martel, I know this is all hard to understand, and sadly things may get harder. We'll be willing to have some of our counsellors and therapists work with your family to get you all through this" Owen said

"Thank you Dr. Hunt"

With the secret now out in the open, the doctors breathed a sigh of relief. But they couldn't help but feel for the man whose entire life was about to change.

________

"How did you even come up with Munchausen syndrome anyway?" Jackson asked

The family was on their way home to the hospital. Lydia was napping in the back seat while the two adults discussed the events of the day. Jackson wondered how his wife knew it was the mother all along.

"Lydia" she answered his question

His brows furrowed, his eyes on the road "Lydia told you it was Munchausen syndrome? I know our daughter is smart, but she's not that smart"

"No" she chuckled "Lydia didn't want to go to school so she faked being sick. That's when I started wondering if Mason was really sick. I started to do some research and the mother making her son sick was starting to make sense"

"Oh,," he said in understanding before something else caught his attention "Wait, Lydia faked being sick?"

"Yeah, she's still a bit nervous about third grade"

Jackson sighed at his daughter going through her own little crisis.

"She'd get over it soon," he said

"Yeah, she will" April smiled

"I'm proud of you by the way," Jackson said glancing over at her "You saved that boy's life"

"It's what I do" she grinned at him "You did marry a badass trauma surgeon"

Jackson smiled "That I did"

With smiles on their faces, they continued their drive home in silence. April's dream and livelihood were no longer at stake.

________
