Chapter 22

April walked through the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial, a tablet in her hand. Her eyes were glued to the screen, and to anyone passing by, she looked busy.

But work was the furthest thing on her mind. She constantly replayed the conversation she had with her husband a few nights ago. She was relieved that she told him and was happy that he was willing to do whatever to make her happy.

Talk about the fertility specialist had come up again, and they had decided to make an appointment soon. She had to know if her eggs were indeed dried up.

"Dr. Kepner!"

April was brought out of her thoughts by someone calling her. She looked around and spotted Ms Martel coming from her son's room.

"Oh, Ms Martel, good morning" she greeted "Is everything Ok?"

"Yes.....well no," she said

"Did Mason get worse?"

"No, he's the same, and that's the problem" she explained, "Is there anything you guys can do to make him better?"

"Sadly, there's nothing more we can do until we figure out what's really going on with him" April answered

"But you took blood for tests, did scans" the mother pointed out

"Yes we did, but so far the results aren't explaining what's wrong"

"So what am I supposed to do? Watch my child lay there in pain?"

"Ma'am we're doing all we can to treat his symptoms. But until we find out what's going on, we can't treat it"

Ms Martel looked frustrated, but April could tell she understood.

"We're doing all we can Ok? And if there's anything you forgot to mention about Mason, please tell us, it could really help us diagnose him"

After going in and checking on Mason herself, April continued her walk throughout the hospital. Now she had two things on her mind; her talk with Jackson and Mason's mystery disease.

__________

There was an awkward silence at the table as the women ate their lunches. All but one had the same question on their minds and desperately wanted an answer. April had joined Arizona, Meredith, Cristina and Jo at the cafeteria, and the stares and silence started as soon as she sat down.

Word had gotten around among the women that April thought she was pregnant. They didn't know the results, but her attitude throughout the last week gave them a hint of what it could be.

They were now waiting for her to speak first, but she was doing no such thing. Jo was at the point where she couldn't wait anymore and decided to ask what they were all thinking.

"So..." she began, breaking the silence "Are you gonna tell us?"

April looked up from her food "Tell you what?"

"About the thing," she said, not wanting to put her friends business out there but ignoring the fact that she was the one who spilt it to the twisted sisters.

"What thing?"

"You know..." she said, moving her hands around her midsection

"Are you pregnant?" Cristina blurted, not here for Jo's game of charades

"Oh," April said, her face instantly falling "No, I'm not"

The table grew silent again as it was obvious that April was disappointed. All of them, except Cristina, knew what she was going through, especially Meredith. It took and Derek a long time to get to where they were.

Meredith, not wanting the mood to stay low, had just the perfect thing to cheer them up. She placed her hands in her lab coat pocket and pulled out a daisy.

"Here," she said handing it to April

They all looked at Meredith confusingly.

"Uh, thanks," April said, nervously taking the flower from her

"It's not for you" Meredith informed

"Then who's it for?"April asked a brow raised

"Lydia" Meredith answered "From Bailey"

Smiles quickly lit up the table.

"Looks like somebody has a crush" Cristina commented

"He was late to piano practice this morning because he had to pick out the perfect flower from the flower bed at home," Meredith said, "I think your daughter has my son sprung. Lydia is all he talks about sometimes"

"Don't let Jackson hear you say that" Arizona added

"True. But it's so cute" April gushed "Too bad Lydia just sees him as her best friend"

"Ooo, Bailey got friend zoned" Cristina cringed

"And he doesn't even know it" Jo added

"Stop making fun of my son," Meredith said

The conversation continued about Bailey and his crush on Lydia, and soon, April forgot about her disappointment. It was times like these that April was grateful for the women she worked with.

________

The light feeling April had when she left the cafeteria was gone when she got an urgent page to Mason's room. She and Arizona were quickly there, doing all they could. It didn't take long for them to get the young boy stable. Later that day, before leaving, she watched as his mother sat next to him, worried as she held on to his limp hand. No mother should ever have to go through what she was. At that moment, she promised to do all she could to make her little boy better.

And here it is, chapter 22. I know, it's super short, it's just a little filler. But next chapter will be longer. Don't forget to comment and vote. And thank you all so much for reading.
