Chapter 21

"You interns never get anything right," April said, a mean edge to her voice "Just go prep the patient in bed three for surgery please...if you can manage to do that"

"Yes doctor" one of her interns quickly said before walking away, leaving the other two standing there

"What are you two looking at?" April asked voice raised "Go find someone to help!"

"Yes ma'am," they both said nervously before scurrying off into the pit

"And don't kill anyone!" she called after them

April's eyes landed on the nurse at the nurse's station opposite her. She was giving the redhead a disappointed look. April instantly softened.

"I know, I'm being a grumpus," she said to the woman before walking away.

And that was the truth. For the past few days, April Kepner was a complete grumpus in the hospital. It had been a few days since the negative reading and she thought she would be over it by now. But she wasn't, and the disappointment was turning her into a bitch. She didn't lash out at her patients, which meant her interns and residents got all of it.

She definitely didn't lash out at Lydia or Jackson at home. She knew her husband would pick up that something was wrong and she was on the fence about telling him about it. She didn't want to disappoint him. Was a negative test result even something you tell your husband? Especially when he didn't know there was a possibility to begin with? Even if she did have to tell him, she wasn't sure she was ready to.

"Dr. Kepner?" said a nervous voice behind her

"What?!' she snapped turning around

It was one of the interns she had sent away. And boy did he look scared.

"Uh, a Ms. Martel is here to see you," he said "She's in bed 10"

It took a while for April to place the name, but then she remembered it was the mother who had come in with her son Mason a few days ago.

"I'll be right there," she said before grabbing the tablet she had just placed down and going in the direction the intern had just went

As she made her way to the bed, she noticed little Mason curled up in a ball. He was sweating and looked pale.

"What happened?" she asked Ms. Martel and she immediately started checking out the boy

"After we left the hospital, everything was going fine, he was getting better" the mother answered "But this morning, things took a turn and now he's worse than he was before"

His mother was right, Mason was worse than he was when he first came to the hospital. This had to be more than just a stomach bug.

"Let's get an IV going," she said to her intern "And page Dr. Robbins when you're done"

"What's wrong with him?" Ms. Martel asked

"I don't know, but we'll find out Ok?" April answered

The surgeon sighed as she continued to asses Mason, she didn't need any more unwanted or bad news that day.

________

Jackson stood at the nurse's station and watched as his wife snapped at one of her interns. He had noticed the change in her mood a few days ago and had expected her to come to him. But she hadn't. And it was getting harder to just sit back and watch her lash out at her interns and residents. It was time for him to go to her instead of waiting for her to come to him.

She had walked up to the where he stood, the annoyance still on her face.

"What's going on with you?" he asked, getting right to it

"Stupid interns, always messing stuff up" she answered

"I'm not talking about the interns"

"Then what are you talking about?"

"You've been acting weird lately, and I figured something was going on with you"

"I'm fine Jackson" her face softened "And I always act weird"

"That is very true," he said jokingly

"Hey!" she said slapping his chest

"You said it first, not me," he said before his face turned serious again "But seriously April, are you ok?"

"Yes, I'm fine" she answered

"Ok"

Her pager went off and she quickly checked it.

"I have to go," she said before running off "I'll see you at home" she called out before turning the corner

He sighed once she was out of sight. She was lying. There was definitely something wrong with her.

________

"What happened?" April asked rushing into the room

She had received a code blue for her patient Mason.

"I just came in to do a checkup and he just started coding," the resident said

Mason lay flat on the bed, his chest out. He wasn't moving one bit.

"I already charged it to 200, but still nothing" the resident informed

"Ok, well, let's charge to 400!" she said standing next to the young boy, taking the paddles from the nurse

"She caught a glimpse of Ms. Martel standing in the corner of the room, a look of horror on her face

"Someone please get her out of the room" April yelled

The mother was escorted out, and April and her team proceeded to revive the boy. They were able to get his heart beating again, but his vitals were low and he quickly slipped into a coma.

April left the room, feeling more defeated than she was before she entered the room. Not only was she not pregnant, but her patient was in a coma and she had no idea why.

Nothing seemed to be making sense lately.

________

After putting his daughter to bed, Jackson made his way to his bedroom, where he saw his wife was sitting on the bed, sulking.

Something was wrong, he knew that much, and he was tired of her acting like she was fine. He closed the door behind him, getting her attention. Her eyes looked glossy like she was about to cry.

"What's wrong?" he calmly asked

"I'm fine" she answered quickly

"No you're not," he said "I know you April. Something's up and you're not telling me"

She saw the worry in his eyes and knew she should ease it. The problem was she wasn't ready to tell him.

"It's just my patient" she began "It's a little five-year-old boy. There's something wrong with him and I can't figure it out. And it's all just frustrating"

She waited for him to answer, but he just stayed silent and stared at her. A whole minute had passed before he finally spoke.

"You are the love of my life. We have been best friends for a long time. I know you. I know when you're happy, upset, angry and frustrated even when you're trying to hide it" he said before his brows furrowed "And I also know when you're lying" he added with an edge

There was a guilty look on her face, and he knew he was right.

"What's wrong?"

"Jackson..."

"Damn it April, just tell me!" he was angry now, what was so bad that she couldn't tell him? "How am I supposed to help you if you won't tell me?"

The deep lines in his forehead told her how pissed he was, and she knew it was time to tell him. She reached over to her nightstand, opened its drawer and pulled out the pregnancy test. She got up and handed it to him before sitting on the bed again.

Jackson's heartbeat instantly quickened when he realized what it was. Was she pregnant? Right now? He took a closer look and his heart sank. He instantly knew what the problem was. The disappointment he was feeling right then was probably ten times worse for her.

"I had a feeling. The same feeling I ignored with Lydia. I tried not to go crazy, I tried not to jump the gun. I wanted to be sure. But then I started thinking of the cool ways I can tell you. Started thinking about how happy Lydia would be if it was a girl and how she might be pissed if it was a boy. I thought about how she would probably torture him and he would start to annoy her and once he hit puberty and he's finally taller than she is, he will start picking on her like she did to him" April rambled "I thought of the new house, a new car, since the one we have may not be suitable for a car seat, I don't know. But then..."

"The test was negative" Jackson finished

"It was negative" she repeated as a tear rolled down her cheek "And of these thoughts were just that, thoughts"

"April..." he sighed taking a step closer

"It didn't realize how much I wanted a baby until I realized there wasn't one"

The tears were flowing now, and Jackson quickly sat next to her on the bed. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders, pulling her closer to him.

"it's ok," he said rubbing her arms "We can keep trying"

"But what if I can't have any more kids?"

"April..." he began, not wanting her to think negatively

"Jackson I'm in my thirties. What if my eggs are all dried up?" she said pulling herself from his arms arena getting off the bed "What if I have a hostile uterus?" she flung her arms

"You're eggs are not dried up babe"

"How do you know?"

"I don't ok," he said getting off the bed himself "But I need you to stop thinking like that"

"But what if I can't give you another child?"

"I'm fine with that" he answered

"Really?" she asked, her lips pouting much like their daughter's

"Yes really" he stepping forward, closing the space between them, his hands going around her waist "You've already given me an amazing daughter, and I'm very grateful for that"

"So you'd be fine with just her?"

"Yes, I'll be fine" he answered "But if you want to have another baby, I'll be fine with that too. And before you start shouting from the mountain tops that your eggs are dried up, we can go see a fertility specialist, if you want to"

"What if they say my eggs are dried up, or I don't have a lot of good ones left?"

"Then we'll do what we ever it takes to get you that baby you want"

"You'll do that for me?"

"Of course"

"But that stuff is expensive" she pointed out

"We're surgeons, we can afford it," Jackson said "Plus, you're married to the sole heir of the Harper Avery Foundation, so there's some spare change lying around" he added with a smirk

"I think it's a little bit more than spare change Jackson" she smiled up at him

"Look, whatever we plan to do we'll get through it ok? Me and You"

"Me and You" she echoed

He leaned in and captured her lips in his, pulling her closer to him. She kissed back feverishly, relieved she had told him everything.

But she couldn't ignore the feeling that was still there. The feeling of utter disappointment.

________

And there it is, Chapter 21. Sorry for the very long wait, was busy with school and was simply being lazy. Be sure to comment and/ or vote, it's greatly appreciated.

Our girl, our Co-captain, our Queen, Sarah, is gone!

I could go into a whole rant as to how pissed off that I am that she got fired, but I don't think you guys want to hear that right now (If you want to rant with me though, my inbox is open).

Because Sarah is gone, it means that our beloved Japril is no more.

Knowing that you all may feel as devastated as I do, I thought I should come on and update. From now on I'll try to update more frequently and give you guys the Japril that we love and deserve.

Next chapter should be up next week, so until then readers!
