Chapter 20
April stared at herself in the body length mirror in their bedroom. She was in jeans and a tank top with sneakers on her feet. She was supposed to be getting ready for work. But she couldn't stop staring at herself or ignore the feeling.
Her trip to Ohio was filled with talks with her sisters and mother about having another baby. But she and Jackson hadn't been so lucky then.
Now though, she was starting to think they were. She had been having this weird feeling soon after they got back from Ohio a week ago. It was a similar feeling she had when she was pregnant with Lydia. Was she really pregnant? A feeling could just be a feeling...right? But then again, when she was on her period about two weeks ago, it was light. She thought nothing of it. But now, she didn't think so.
She turned to the side, looking at her profile. She had gained weight, she could tell. Plus her sisters had pointed it out once when they were in Ohio. Was she gaining weight because she was pregnant?
She smiled at her reflection, she really hoped she was.
"Babe, you ready?" she heard Jackson calling from the living room
"I'm coming" she yelled back before taking one last look in the mirror and gathering her things
She quickly headed out the room to meet Jackson and Lydia who were waiting for her. She would have to confirm her suspicions when she got back.
But she couldn't believe it, she might actually be pregnant.
________
The usual hustle and bustle of the E.R were nonexistent and April was weirdly grateful for it. The possibility of being pregnant hadn't left her mind and she liked that she didn't have a lot to do that the thought could distract her from.
But now she had to try to put those feelings and thoughts away because she was dealing with a mother and her six-year-old son who had arrived in the E.R.
"He mentioned a headache too," the mother said, rubbing her son's head
"Has he ever had these symptoms before?" April asked
"Yes, but never together like this" she explained
"Well, it seems like it's a virus" the surgeon explained "We're gonna get an IV going and I'll come back to check on him in an hour or so"
"Is he going to be Ok? I've never seen him like this before" the worried mother asked
"He'll be fine Ms. Martel" April calmly said "Viruses run their course and after a few days, he'll be back to himself"
The mother nodded.
"So, one of the residents will hook him up to an IV, check up on him regularly and I'll be back later to see how everything is working out so I could discharge him"
The mother nodded again "Thank you so much Dr. Kepner" she said
"You're welcome" April smiled
After informing one of the residents on what to do, she found herself back at the nurse's station and her mind back on the possibility of having another child.
________
Luckily for April, she didn't have to deal with any more mothers and sick boys that day and her time in the E.R continued going smoothly. She eventually took a break and headed to the cafeteria where she waited for Arizona to join her.
As she waited and her lunch sat in front of her, she found herself searching for "Best dad" T-shirts on Amazon. It had always been her dream to tell her husband she was pregnant that way. With Lydia, things were...difficult, but now she might have the chance to do it the way she dreamt she always would.
"Oh my god" she heard from behind her
She quickly turned around and saw Jo standing behind her.
"You're pregnant?" she whispered
It was then April realized that her friend had seen her phone. Jo quickly took a seat before April could answer her.
"I'm so happy for you guys" she smiled "If we're gonna have babies at the same time, Alex and I have to step up our game. It's not like we're not doing it a lot cause we are. It's just..."
"Jo!" April said stopping her rant "I'm not pregnant...well I'm not sure if I am or not" she clarified
"Oh," Jo said, her enthusiasm down a bit "You haven't taken a test yet?"
"What test?" Arizona asked as she took a seat at the table
"April thinks she's pregnant" Jo spilled
Arizona's eyes widened "Really?"
"Yes, but she hasn't taken the test yet" Jo answered again
"Jo!"
"Sorry"
"Why haven't you taken a test yet?" the pediatric surgeon asked
"Yeah, why?" Jo echoed
"I just haven't had the time" she answered "But I'll do it as soon as I get home"
"And you'll tell us first thing tomorrow?" Arizona asked
"I'll tell you first thing tomorrow" April confirmed
"Good" Jo smiled "By the way, I think you should pick the blue shirt"
"You think so?"
The rest of the break was spent talking about April's possibility of having a tiny human in her uterus and how exactly she would tell Jackson about it.
________
"Ms. Martel?" April said pulling back the curtain to reveal Mason, the little boy, and his mother "I'm here to check up on him"
The woman nodded and allowed April to do her work.
"His fever is gone" she smiled before asking Mason "How do you feel? Does your head or stomach still hurt?"
"Just a little" he answered, he seemed to be feeling better
"When was the last time he threw up?" she directed the question at his mother
"A little over an hour ago" she answered
"That's good" she smiled "Well, it's safe to say that Mason is getting better. Like I said earlier, you'll have to let the virus runs its course, and he'll be fine in a couple days. Just give him fluids, some meds and keep him resting until the symptoms are all gone" She then turned to the little boy "And as for you, I'll need you to remember to always wash your hands before you eat, Ok? We don't want any more bad germs to get inside you"
"Ok Dr. Kepner" Mason smiled
She couldn't help but send him a wide smile "Good"
She got Mason off the IV, gave his mother a prescription and watched as mother and son walked out of the E.R. She couldn't help but think of the day she got to hold the hand of her own son. He would be the cutest little boy ever. Or she could have a daughter, Lydia wasn't so fond of the idea of having a little brother. She prayed Lydia wouldn't torture the poor boy. Then again, torturing younger siblings was what older siblings did, no matter if it were boy or girl. She giggled to herself, maybe he would be the one doing the torturing and annoying.
April shook her head. Why was she thinking like this? She didn't even know if she was pregnant, and she was thinking about her hypothetical son and his hypothetical relationship with Lydia.
She updated Mason's chart, before returning the tablet to its stand. She then went on to see other patients, now wishing she a lot more to do to keep her mind off the potential life changing news that could come that night.
_______
April looked at the clock on her phone.
One more minute.
She placed it back on the bathroom counter and continued pacing in front of the bathtub.
This was it. She was one minute away from finding out if their family of three was about to grow. She had already planned out how she was going to tell Jackson and Lydia. She was prepared for the uproar if she had to tell Lydia one day, that the baby was a boy. She was ready...well she was telling herself that. Were she and Jackson really ready for a baby? Having two children is way harder than having a talkative outgoing six-year-old. What if the kid turned out just like Lydia? It would be double the trouble.
"Hey babe, you Ok in there?" Jackson called from the other side of the door, she froze "You've been in there a while"
"Yeah, I'm fine" she quickly answered "Just ate a little too much today, and my stomach isn't too happy about that"
"Oh" Jackson chuckled "Well carry on then"
She heard the footsteps fading and she sighed. She ran to her phone again and checked the clock.
Time was up.
She slowly walked over to the two pregnancy tests on the further end of the counter and picked them up. Her eyes scanned the window, and the letters were bright and clear.
Negative.
