Chapter 18

"Mommy, wake up!" Lydia said, shaking her mother who was asleep on the bed "You too daddy" she added towards Jackson

"What?" April quickly sat up in bed, she had gone into full mommy worry mode "Is something wrong?"

"Nothing is wrong mommy" Lydia answered

"Then why did you wake me up?"

"We have to go to Ohio to see grandma and grandpa!" she said with excitement

April looked around the room and spotted the packed suitcases. Then she remembered, it was the day that they leave Seattle to go to Ohio to visit her parents. It was the first time three of them would be going as a family.

"If you guys don't get up, we'll miss the plane" the little curly haired girl explained

April checked the time, it was five am. They had a few more hours before they had to leave to catch their flight. But it seemed that her daughter was too excited to stay in bed.

"Alright, alright, we're getting up," she said before turning to Jackson "Jackson, wake up"

"Why?" he groaned

"Cause daddy, we're going to Ohio today" Lydia answered his question

After some more coaxing, Jackson finally got out of bed. They spent some time making breakfast and entertaining Lydia before finally getting ready to leave. That was all they had to do, suitcases and bags were already packed the night before.

When it was nine am sharp, the three left the apartment. After dropping a spear key off with Alex and Jo's, they headed for the airport.

________

"You know Lydia if you keep bouncing like that, you'll fly right out of the car," Joe Kepner said from the driver's seat

"No I won't grandpa" Lydia giggled as she continued

She was sitting in the back with her mother, while her father sat in the passenger seat. They had landed about an hour ago and Joe had shown up to the airport to pick them up. They were now on their way to the Kepner house, and Lydia couldn't hold in her excitement, hence the bouncing in the back seat. It had been a while since she'd been to her grandparents' house and she couldn't wait to get there and play with her cousins.

Jackson and April shook their heads at their daughter's excitement as their drive to the house continued. April was excited to be in her childhood home again after such a long time of being away. It would be great to spend some time with her sisters, even if they annoyed the crap out of her. This was Jackson's second time in Moline, the first being when he came to convince Karen to come to the wedding. Now, he was finally having the chance to enjoy the place.

After another thirty minutes of driving, they finally made it to the entrance of the Kepner farm. They drove a few meters down the driveway before they pulled up and were parked in front of the large farmhouse.

Lydia was the first to climb out of the car and run to her grandmother that was standing on the porch waiting for them.

"Grandma!" she yelled running into the older woman's arms

"Hello Lydia" Karen smiled, hugging her granddaughter back

After their embrace, Karen placed her down and looked her over.

"You've gotten taller since I last saw you" she commented

"I know" Lydia grinned up at her

"If she keeps that up she'll be taller than me by the end of the year," April said approaching them

Karen smiled at her daughter "Hello sweetheart" she said with her arms open

"Hi mom" April answered walking into her arms

They pulled away after a few seconds.

"How have you been?" the older redhead asked

"I've been good" her daughter answered " And how about you? Haven't been doing too much have you?"

Her parents were getting older, and she was beginning to get more worried about their health especially when her dad hurt himself on the farm a few weeks ago. There were no major injuries, but as their daughter, she was worried.

"I'm fine" Karen answered, waving her daughter off "Both your father and I are fine. We can take care of ourselves you know"

April squinted at her, not really believing what she said "If you say so"

Jackson and Joe came from the car, pulling suitcases behind them up the stairs of the porch.

"Mrs. Kepner" Jackson greeted with a smile, his hand stretched out once he was standing in front of her

"Jackson," she said dryly not taking his hand

Jackson smile dropped. They weren't best friend's but he didn't expect her to be this unexcited to see him.

But then the coldness quickly went away and she smiled.

"I am just playing around," she said before pulling Jackson into and hug "It's good to see you"

"It's good to see you too, ma'am," he said hugging back

April and Joe smiled, it felt good to see them like that. Neither really thought they would get to that point.

"Come on, let's get inside," Karen said after pulling away.

Karen led Lydia inside, while April helped her husband and father bring in the rest of the bags. Once inside, April took a good look around her childhood home. She sighed to herself, she really did miss it. The small family settled in and then went to the sitting room where they caught up and waited for the rest of the Kepner clan to show up.

________

April walked down the stairs and headed to the kitchen. It had been a few days since they arrived in Ohio, and their little vacation was going great. There were times when she had to hold her tongue with her sisters, but she was still enjoying her time.

"Good morning," she said entering the kitchen

"Good morning," the sisters and mother said back

The sisters sat at the table, digging into their breakfast, while Karen was finishing off the last batch of waffles.

She looked around the room and didn't see her husband or daughter. She woke up alone in bed and expected to see Jackson in the kitchen getting breakfast for her and Lydia like he had been doing the past few days.

"Where's Lydia?" she asked, worried that her daughter hadn't eaten yet

"She's with the other kids watching TV" Alice answered

"And she ate already" Karen added, causing April to sigh in relief

"And where's Jackson?" she asked

"He and the husbands are out on the farm somewhere with dad" Libby answered "He wanted to show them the family business"

"But he's done that a lot of times before" April recalled

"Yes, but Jackson is new" Alice pointed out

April looked worried.

"What? Scared your pretty face husband can't handle it?" Kimmie teased

"Yes actually" April answered honestly "He grew up in the city, he knows nothing about farming and feeding animals. He never even had a dog growing up. The only interaction he had with animals was riding horses in boarding school"

"That's sad" Kimmie commented an amused frown

"He'll be fine April, he's with dad," Alice said

"Yes, he'll be fine" Karen assured "Now come eat" she added pointing to the table where her sisters sat

"Yeah, come join the conversation" Kimmie urged

"Who are we gossiping about this time?" April asked annoyed, taking a seat between Alice and an empty chair

"Penny Hathaway who went to high school with us" the eldest sister answered, "She's pregnant...again..."

April blocked out the conversation. She didn't really care if Penny Hathaway had another baby, she didn't like her very much back in high school. Her mother placed a plate of waffles in front of her before taking a seat in the chair next to her.

"Thanks mom," April said before digging in

"You're welcome" she answered before taking a bit of her own "You know your husband has a waffle addiction right?"

Jackson had taken thirds when he found out that waffles were on the menu for breakfast. He complimented her waffles every chance he got, and she wouldn't say it out loud, but he was gaining serious brownie points for that.

April giggled at her mother's question "Yes, I am aware"

"Now I know where Lydia gets it from"

"Speaking of babies and your husband.." Libby joined in "When are you two gonna have another baby?"

Ears perked up and all eyes were on April.

"Well..." she hesitantly began

"Oh my god you're pregnant!" Alice grinned

"No no no, I'm not pregnant" April quickly clarified

Her sisters frowned.

"We've been talking about it, though," she said, causing the frowns on their faces to go away

"Have you guys started trying yet?" Libby asked wiggling her brows at her older sister

"Uh...yeah...kinda...i guess" she answered

Though they had talked about it, they hadn't officially said they were trying to have a baby. Plus they hadn't gotten around to getting a new house, they were still looking.

"Are you excited about having a baby soon?" Alice asked

April thought of the joy she had with Lydia, she certainly wanted that again. But what she really looked forward to, was having Jackson there this time around. She saw how he was with Paige and couldn't wait to see him with their second child.

"Yeah" she smiled, her sisters and mother smiling back at her

"I wonder if the husbands are freaked out yet?" Kimmie asked

"Probably" Karen answered with a smirk

A realization suddenly hit April at the mention of their husbands.

"Wait, isn't today..." she began

"Yep" the others answered in unison

April frowned, this might not end well.
