Chapter 17

Jackson sat next to his daughter on the couch as she laughed loudly at her favorite cartoon character on the T.V screen.

Their trip to Ohio was early the next day, and they had been given the day off to get things together. April had left to do some last minute shopping for things they needed, so Jackson was left home with Lydia.

Jackson looked down at her as she giggled and smiled. He remembered his early dad days a few years ago, when he dreaded looking after her when April wasn't around. She was such a hyper talkative little girl (still is), and he had trouble figuring out what to do with her. He would eventually let her do whatever she wanted. Now he had more practice and knew that reading and watching cartoons or just letting her play by herself was a very good way to keep her occupied.

He was pulled out of his memory by a knock on the door. He pushed himself off the couch, leaving a laughing Lydia and headed to the door.

"Here" said Alex as soon as the door was opened, he handed his daughter over to Jackson

"Dude" Jackson protested

"Remember that time when you said you would babysit?" he asked handing the baby bag over

"When did I ever say that?"

"We were talking about you knocking up Kepner and how you think taking care of a baby will be easy. So I told you that I'd let you babysit Paige to know what it's like and you agreed" Alex explained "Jo is at the hospital, I just got paged and our babysitter is sick, so, today is your lucky day"

"Paige!" Lydia cheered as she looked away from the T.V to the door

She jumped off the couch and ran towards them.

"Hi Paige" she said

"Leelee" Paige said back excitedly, unable to say Lydia

"Bye Paige" Alex said getting his daughter's attention "And be good for Dr. Jackson Ok?"

Paige nodded her head excitedly before turning back to Lydia.

"Have fun" Alex grinned at his friend before walking away

Jackson groaned as he closed the door and placed Paige on the floor, who was eager to get off him.

"What's Paige doing here daddy?" Lydia asked

"Alex has to go to the hospital so, we're babysitting today" he answered

"Yay" Lydia cheered, Paige trying to mimic her

"Come on Paige, let's go play"

Lydia held on to the tiny girl's hand and lead her to the couch.

"We're gonna play tea party, hide and seek,tag..." Lydia began listing games

Jackson groaned, what did he get himself into?

________

"Yay!" Lydia cheered along with the younger girl, they had just finished another game of "patty cake"

Jackson sat back on the couch, watching them play on the floor in front of him. It was the best he could do.

Three hours had passed, and he was already exhausted. Lydia was excited to have someone younger to play with, Jackson was just worried about having another person to look after.

"What else can we play daddy?" Lydia asked

The curly haired girl had taken over the game playing, and Jackson allowed it. It kept the girls entertained and him feeling a little less overwhelmed. Now, Lydia had ran out of games to play, and she needed a suggestion.

"I have no idea" Jackson answered

Lydia frowned.

"How about we take a break from playing and I make you guys a snack?" he asked, wanting to cheer his daughter up a bit

Lydia quickly nodded "Can we have PB&J?" she asked

"Sure thing"

Jackson got up from the couch, leaving Lydia with Paige, who attention was taken by one of Lydia's Barbies. Going through the pantry and refrigerator, he got out the ingredients and brought them to the island so that he can still keep an eye on the two. Once he was finished, he walked over to the sink to wash the dirty utensils. But he was quickly taken from his tasks after hearing Paige's cry.

He dropped everything and made his way back over to the couch.

"What's wrong?" he asked

"I don't know, she just started crying" Lydia answered, rubbing Paige's back

Lydia's soothing didn't work and Paige kept crying. Jackson starting pacing, thinking of what he should do. He then quickly picked Paige off the floor and started pacing the floor with her in his arms.

"Uh...what am I supposed to do?"

"Mommy used to rock me" Lydia suggested after thinking of things her mother used to do with her

Jackson stood in front of the couch and began rocking from side to side. After doing so for five minutes, he realized it was doing nothing to sooth Paige.

"This isn't working" he said now more worried than before

What if she was somehow hurt and he didn't know? Alex would kill him. Lydia thought hard, trying to remember the other things her mother did for her.

"Mommy used to sing to me" she said, an answering coming to her

"Uh...I don't think I can do that" Jackson informed his daughter

"Why?"

"Singing isn't really my thing"

"So what are we supposed to do?" Lydia asked

They stood there in silence, Paige the only one making a sound. Then Lydia finally had the perfect idea,or so she thought

"Let's call mommy!"

________

"And there we go" April said to Paige, who was laying in front of her, as she clipped her clothes back in place

Jackson stood by the door, wanting to slap himself. Here he was thinking something terribly wrong had happened and all she needed was a clean diaper.

April lifted her of their bed and headed out of their room, Jackson following behind her. She then placed Paige on the couch next to Lydia so they could watch cartoons and eat their PB&J. The couple went to the kitchen to unpack the bags of whatever it was April bought.

Lucky for April, she had already finished all her shopping when Jackson called needing help. She wasn't surprised to realize all Paige needed was to be taken out of her soaked diaper.

"Do you think I can be a good dad to our new kid? Whenever we have one that is" Jackson asked out of the blue

"Of course you will be. You already are" April replied "Why would you ask that?"

"I was horrible with Paige today:

"Babe..."

"All she needed was to be changed and I could even figure it out" he said defeatedly

He didn't want to admit it, but Alex was right, taking care of a baby was way harder than he thought. And Paige wasn't even a baby anymore, she would be two soon. If he couldn't deal with an almost two year old who could at least say when she was hungry, how did he expect to deal with a crying two or three month old?

April took his hand and pulled him towards her, taking his attention away from the bag he was looking through.

"Look, you didn't have to deal with this when Lydia was little, so you have no practice, and that's my fault. You won't know everything the first time, no one does. It will be hard and it will take some time but you will get used to it and know what to do. You will be an amazing dad to the new baby, trust me" April smiled up at him and pulled him close "Plus you have me and Lydia to help you out"

He smiled down at her, grateful that he had someone like her by his side. He bent and kissed her lips.

"Thank you" he said after pulling away

"You're welcome" she smiled

"Can I ask for a favor?" he asked moments later

"Name it"

"Can we not tell Alex about this?"

________

And there it is, chapter 17. Thank you call so much for reading. Don't forget to leave your comments and votes if you want to. And I'm starting to run out of ideas so any suggestions and ideas you have will be welcomed and considered.

What did you guys think of the season premiere? And the Japril baby? Her name is Harriet! I was little bummed that it wasn't Lydia though lol. It was great to see them, including Mama Avery (even though I'm still in my feelings about what she did), the way they were, it was cute. I loved the episode and can't wait to see the next.

Please check out my other Japril fanfic Operation Phoenix (which will be updated soon) and my other The Element Table and Wright Magazine. It will be greatly appreciated.

Again, thank you such for reading and I'll try to post again as soon as I get the time, not promising anything though. Until then!
