Chapter 15

"This is an...OK way to start my birthday" April said, trying to sound unenthusiastic but failed miserably by letting a moan out at the end of her statement

She stood in the running shower, chest pressed against her husband's, his face buried in her neck.

"Really?" Jackson asked against her neck, playing along

"Breakfast in bed would have been more practical"

"Do you want practical or satisfying?" he asked, his lips moving up her neck to her cheek

"Breakfast in bed can be satisfying" she argued

"More than Birthday Morning Shower sex?" he asked before pressing his lips on hers

Pulling away after a few seconds, she looked up at him "It can be" she smirked

"We'll see about that" he grinned, hooking his hands under her knees, lifting her of the floor

April shrieked, wrapping her arms around his neck. Once her back was against the wet tiled wall, he kissed her hard, ready to prove a point.

It was April Kepner-Avery's birthday, a day she only saw as being a year closer to the big 4-0. She had woken up early, wanting to help Lydia with the birthday breakfast she wished to make. But she soon left her daughter to sleep in for a while when her husband offered to shower with her.

Husband. That was something she had to get used to calling him. That man had the title of co-worker, best friend, "her first", boyfriend, lover, father of her child, boyfriend again fiancé and now husband. She was aware that traditionally, it was out of order. She had never imagined her love life to ever be non traditional. But here they were, finally married, and that was all she could ask for.

So far, marriage was treating them well. She knew that the honeymoon phase would eventually be over, but she planned to enjoy it as much as she could.

A while later Jackson stood behind his wife, rubbing a foamy loofah on her back.

"You know we can go again" he proudly smirked, glad that he had proven his point

"No" she said, her eyes closed, enjoying the feel of his slippery hands on her body

"Why not?" the smirk was wiped off his face

"Lydia's gonna be awake any minute. She'll want help making my birthday breakfast" April explained

"She's always ruining stuff" Jackson groaned

April turned and slapped him playfully on the chest "Jackson!"

"What? She does"

Suddenly there was a knock on the door, and they both froze.

"Mommy?"

"See?" Jackson whispered pointing to the direction of the door

"Yes?"April answered her daughter, sending her husband a side eye

"Are you done?" the little girl asked

"Almost. What's wrong?"

"You've been showering a long time mommy" Lydia commented causing Jackson to snicker

"What do you want Lydia?"

"Your birthday breakfast is ready" she happily announced from behind the door

Anger rose in April. Birthday breakfast usually included pancakes with sprinkles on it. Making those required the stove, and Lydia knew she wasn't allowed to go near it.

"Lydia Avery how many times do I have to tell you you're not allowed near the stove without mommy or daddy there?" April scolded

"I didn't use the stove" Lydia defended herself

"You didn't?" April asked now calm, but also confused

"No. Daddy and I bought special cereal so I could make you breakfast by myself" she explained

"Oh" April responded "Well, I'll be out in a minute Ok?"

"Ok" Lydia said and with that she was off down the hall

April turned her attention back to Jackson.

"So, you bought me special cereal"

"I did" he answered "She wanted to make you breakfast all by herself, so I bought cereal. Plus, I thought if she was doing it by herself, we would get some time alone" he added, putting his arm around her waist and pulling her closer

April placed her hands on his shoulder.

"So, what is this special cereal you got?" she asked

"Apple jacks" he answered

She looked at him confused "Applejacks?"

What was so special about Applejacks?

"Like, you know, apple..." he said pointing to her before pointing to himself "...jacks"

April dropped her hands off his shoulder, giving him her best "seriously" look

"Jackson that's so...lame"

"Really? I thought it was kinda cute"

"It's not" she clarified for him

Their conversation was again interrupted by a knock on the door.

"Mommy?"

"Yes Lydia?" April answered while Jackson groaned

"Where's daddy?" the little girl asked "I knocked on your room door, but he didn't answer" she added

She had gone to her parents room to tell Jackson that her special breakfast, that she made herself, was ready. But when she knocked on the door, like she was recently encouraged to do, there was no answer from her father.

"Uh..." April said, wondering if she should answer truthfully

"I'm right here Lydia" Jackson answered instead

"Oh" Lydia said

"Jackson" April whispered, hitting him once again on the chest

"She needed to know" he whispered back

"No she didn't" April hissed

"Are you guys having alone time?" Lydia asked from outside the bathroom

"No"

"Yes" Jackson talked over April, getting another look after doing so

"Oh, ok. Are you gonna come out for breakfast when you're all done?"

"Yes munchkin"

"Ok" and with that, the little girl was off again

"She did not need to know that" April repeated once Lydia was gone

"She doesn't know exactly what we're doing. And we both know she won't stop asking until she got an answer SHE believed" Jackson said "Look on the bright side, she knocked on our door. Progress"

Once back from their weekend honeymoon in Lake Tahoe, the newly married couple talked to their daughter about respecting their privacy, and knocking on the door and waiting to be invited in. When she asked why, Jackson came up with the whole them "having alone time".

"Let's get out of here before she comes back with more questions" April said, removing herself from her husband's arms

Disappointed that there was no more "alone time" for the morning, Jackson replied "Yeah"

The three of them sat at the table as Lydia continued a story she was telling. She had a habit of talking about every single thing that happened at school, not leaving out a single detail. Jackson and April would sometimes fake enthusiasm, responding to everything she said. But, they would often get tired of it. They were at that point in the story telling, and they weren't sure how much more they could handle hearing about the new pet bird the class got.

"I bet it was" April responded, when Lydia said 'It was so cool'

They had learned responses that would match whatever their daughter was talking about, without her realizing they weren't really listening.

"Can we get a pet bird?" Lydia asked

"Uh, maybe" Jackson said, another automatic response to whenever she asked for something

Lydia scooped a spoon full of cereal in her mouth. Then a second, and a third. The parents were starting to feel relieved, glad that the story was over.

"Mommy..." Lydia began, forcing her parents to hide their annoyed looks "..did you know that Kimberly has a baby brother?"

"No, I didn't" April replied

"Yeah, she does" Lydia said, scooping another spoonful in her mouth, and was about to begin another story about her friend and her baby brother

"Don't speak with your mouth full Lydia" April scolded

She stopped for a minute to chew and swallow, and for a while, Jackson and April thought she had forgotten about the story. But as soon as her mouth was clear from food, she began her story, retelling all the things her friend told her about her baby brother. Their responses began to get automatic again, but it all stopped when she asked a question they should have seen coming.

"Can I have a baby sister?"

Jackson and April looked up at each other. They were not prepared for this question. They had a six year old who was an only child, they should have known this question was coming sooner or later. How should they respond though? Would a 'maybe' work?

"Uh..."Jackson began looking up at April for help. She nodded, giving him his answer "...yeah, sure"

"Really?" Lydia asked, eyes wide

"Yeah" Jackson confirmed

Lydia grinned from ear to ear "I'm getting a baby sister!"

"Or, maybe a baby brother" April added

"I don't want a brother" Lydia frowned

"Why not?" April asked copying her frown

"They're mean. Kimberly says her baby brother puked on her, and Zola says that Bailey steals her toys. So, I want a sister"

Jackson and April shook their head at their daughter. That was some explanation.

"Hey ladies" April said walking into the attending's lounge.

"Hey" Jo said back before the other greeted her as well

Jo, Meredith, Cristina and Callie were all in the lounge eating lunch. April retrieved her lunch from the fridge and then took a seat next to Jo.

"Happy Birthday" the younger surgeon said

"Thank you Jo" April replied

"Today's your birthday?" Cristina asked sitting at the table with Meredith

"Yeah, you forgot?" her best friend asked, she had already texted April that morning

"Well you're a bad friend" Callie added from her seat on the other side of the room. She had told the red head happy birthday when they bumped into each other in the E.R.

"Well I'm sorry, I don't pay attention to dates" Cristina said annoyed before turning to April "Happy Birthday Kepner"

"Thank you Yang"

"So, did you get any presents yet?" Jo asked

"She had sex this morning" Cristina answered, getting agreeing nods from the others

"Jackson is taking me out for dinner tonight" she said ignoring them, even though they were right. They didn't need to know about the amazing time she had in the shower this morning.

"What about Lydia, did she get you anything?" Jo asked, ignoring that they were ignored

"She made me cereal for breakfast" April smiled

"Cereal?" Cristina asked, cereal didn't seem that big of a deal

"She wanted to make me a birthday breakfast by herself this year, and cereal was the only thing she could do alone" April explained

"That's so sweet" Meredith commented

"Speaking of Lydia..." April began, willing to share at least one part of her morning "...she asked for a baby sister this morning"

"Uh-oh" Callie said

"And she's very particular about it being a sister and not a brother" April added

"Sophia is starting to ask for a sibling too" Callie shared "I don't know how to tell her no though"

"Jackson and I do want more kids, we just never discussed the when and how many" April said

"Well, you're gonna have to discuss it soon, cause Lydia is done being an only child" Meredith said

Then, Jo's eyes lit up "Maybe we can get pregnant together" she said to April

"You want another baby?" Callie asked

"Yeah" Jo answered "I didn't think I'd love being a mother this much, but I do. I get to shower all this love and attention on this baby who thinks the world of me"

"I hear that fades eventually" Cristina commented

"I just want another baby to experience that more" Jo finished

"Does Alex want another baby?" April asked

"Of course he does" Jo smiled

"I'm done with babies" Alex said as he walked down the hallway with Jackson

Jackson had informed him about Lydia's request, and he had an opinion on it.

"They're cute and all, but they're really annoying and cry for no reason" Alex added

"Paige can't be that bad"

"Want to babysit her for a day?" Alex challenged

"Sure, why not" Jackson shrugged

"You think it's easy don't you?"

"I watch Lydia all the time. How hard can a little baby be?"

"Lydia and Paige aren't the same. Taking care of a one year old is different from taking care of a six year old" Alex advised

"Yeah, but it can't be that bad right?"

"You know what, you and April should get on with having this baby. You'll feel so stupid when you realize how right I am"

Jackson rolled his eyes, ready for the bantering that was to happen next. But their time was cut short when they were paged to the E.R. For a while, the topic of babies was forgotten.

"Maybe if we hurry, we could make our reservations?" April asked

"Maybe" Jackson answered

The two were in the elevator, going up to their floor. There was a big trauma, and both were stuck in the OR longer than expected. Jackson had planned to take April out for her birthday, but now, they may not be able to make their reservation.

April felt horrible. Even though the trauma wasn't her fault, she still felt bad that they might miss their dinner. Jackson had gone on and on about her birthday dinner and she wanted him to get a chance to do what he promised.

The elevator doors opened, and April expertly dug her keys out of her bag as they made their way down the hall to their apartment door. Jackson stood right behind her as she unlocked the door and walked in. She was about to inform her husband that she was about to take a shower but was stunned silent when she saw the get up in their living room.

There was a table set for two in the middle of the room, the couch and centre piece moved to the corners. A maroon cloth covered the table, and room was filled with red roses and candles.

"You like it?" Jackson asked coming up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist.

"I do"

"Thought you would"

"How did you do all of this? We were in the OR all day"

"I have my ways" he answered with a grin

'His ways' meaning gullible interns who would do anything to get in on a surgery. While in the OR, he had figured they wouldn't have time to get to the restaurant, so, he convinced his interns to go set up for a romantic dinner. They did a good job, except for the many candles that were now a fire hazard.

April turned in his arms to face him.

"Thank you" she said wrapping her arms around his neck and pecking his lips

"You're welcome" Jackson said giving her more than just a peck back

They dropped their bags on the floor and returned their arms back to where they were, their lips never parting. Jackson pulled her closer and deepened the kiss, eliciting a moan from her, exactly what he wanted. Even though they had plans for dinner, he had no problem skipping it all.

April burst his bubble by cutting their kissing short.

"We'll resume this later"

She pulled herself from his embrace, picked her bag off the floor and headed for their bedroom to change.

Maybe he could wait for an hour or two.

The two were at the table, Jackson's cell phone sitting in the middle of it. They were saying goodnight to their daughter who was spending the night at Alex's. After a wonderful dinner, they decided to check on Lydia before going on with the rest of the night's plans, something Jackson was particularly looking forward to.

"Be good ok" April said

"I will" Lydia said over the phone

"And tell Alex to stop giving you cookies"

"Oh...ok" Lydia said a bit slower this time

April shook her head as Jackson smirked, their daughter had no intension of passing that message along.

"Goodnight Lydia" Jackson said

"Goodnight" she said back

"We love you" April added

"I love you guys too" she answered

"Give the phone back to Jo" Jackson said and then heard the scuffle on the other side of the phone

"I'm back" Jo said

"Please tell your husband to stop giving Lydia cookies" April said

"I will"

"And I hope she's not too much trouble" April added

"No, she's great. Her and Paige are keeping each other company"

"Ok, well, we'll see you guys tomorrow" Jackson said

"Ok. Have fun you guys" Jo said teasingly

"We will" Jackson answered earning a giggle from Jo and an eye roll from April

Once he hung up and put his phone away, April thought it was the best time to talk about what was on her mind, before they got into more celebrating.

"I've been thinking about what Lydia said this morning" she said

"You too huh" Jackson replied

April nodded "We never really had a discussion about it"

"I know"

"So...you do want kids right?"

"Right. I never got to experience Lydia as a baby, so I want that chance with another child" Jackson answered

"How many kids do you want?"

"Two. Three is my limit though. What about you?"

"I've always wanted four" April said then giggled at Jackson's panicked expression "...but two is good"

"Good" he said with relief

"When should we start?"

Jackson had to think hard, he hadn't really thought about when would be the right time for a second child.

"I don't know...but soon"

"Well I say now. I'm not getting any younger" April said pointing to the leftover birthday cake that was still sitting on the table, under a glass cover

Thinking about what she said, Jackson came up with a plan.

"Ok, how about this..." he began taking her hand in his "We start looking for a bigger place. If we want to expand our family, there's no way all of us could fit in here. Except if Lydia shares her room, but we both know that's not happening. So, we get a new place, and once everything's settled, then we can seriously start trying...though, I'm not opposed to practicing until then"

April smiled at him "Of course you won't oppose"

"So what do you think? Does that work for you?"

April considered his plan. He had a point; there was no way their expanded family could fit in their apartment. Plus she always imagined living in a house much like her childhood home, with a big living room and kitchen and more than just one bathroom. It was needed when there were five women living in the same house.

"Yes, that would work"

"Are you sure?"

"Yes" she smiled, squeezing his hand

"Well it's final" he smiled back

April was now relieved. They finally had an idea of how their future was going to be. Being married to him was going to be a challenge, but she was so happy that they took that step and planned to be together forever.

She removed her hands from his and got up from her seat, picking up her present that was next to her on the table. Three tickets to Moline, Ohio for the summer.

"Where are you going?" Jackson asked as she began to walk away

She stopped and looked over her shoulder "Thought we could do some practicing"

At that Jackson shot up from his seat and followed her to their bedroom, passing the still lit candles on the way. He would have to put them out later.
