Chapter 28: Thank the Gods - Thalia's POV

When we all split up, I ran towards a laistrygorian fight with Annabeth, Grover and Epsilon.

I saw Flames, Angel and Azelle run towards the fire barrier. It was almost completely down. I heard Flames yelling out for oil to keep up the fire.

Drakon, Huntress and Nico sprinted in the direction of several huge hag things tearing apart a few campers.

I kept running. There were seven laistrygorians in all. Each of them wore heavy metal armour and no helmets. They carried clubs and fiery bronze cannons, and were covered in ugly tattoos.

'We can't let them fire those cannons into the amphitheatre,' Epsilon shouted, stumbling a little.

Annabeth tried to help him, but he waved her away and continued on.

The laistrygonians noticed us when we were twenty feet away. They didn't seem to realize that they could throw their cannons at us, instead charging with their clubs held high. They closed the distance in seconds.

'Let's so this,' Annabeth said.

I ducked under the first club and jumped on top of the second, sprinting up the length of the wood and up the giants arm. I reached his head before he even knew where I was.

I raised my spear and shouted, 'For Zeus!' A fork of lightning shot out of the sky and hit the tip of my spear which I then drove into the bakc of the giants neck. It wailed in pain as electricity arched over its body before it tumbled limply, taking me with it.

It head hit the ground and I rolled to safety. I frowned, Zeus didn't usually answer my prayer that quickly.

I didn't have time to wonder as another laistrygonian came after me. I curved to the side as it smashed it's club down on me, barely missing my head.

I rolled out of the way and came up standing. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Grover, Annabeth and Epsilon fighting off the other five giants.

I was so distracted, I almost forgot about my fight. The laistrygonian lunged at me and I slid between its legs, coming out behind it. It looked around, confused, before I rammed my spear in its bright red rump.

The giant howled, grasping its behind with both hands. It's club fell to the ground and lay there, forgotten. I took the chance and speared the giant in the stomach.

The laistrygonian gave a final grunt before dissolving.

I glanced over my shoulder. Epsilon had taken down one giant and was currently helping Annabeth against two more.

Grover was playing a sharp tune on his pipes, causing tree roots to erupt around the final two laistrygorians, pinning them to the ground.

I headed for Grover, yelling, 'Keep it upu, Goat Boy! I got 'em!'

I whipped out my hunting knife as I ran, and threw it directly at one of the giants. It hit the giant in the forehead and it disintergrated into dust.

The second one was evidently a lot stronger. It ripped through the tree roots Grover had conjured up, who promptly collapsed from the effort of so much magic. It roared, something that sounded half belch and half sneeze. I tried to hold my breath.

'Hey, snot nose!' I yelled, trying to attract it's attention. 'Down here! Come at me, you-'

I never got to finish my sentence as it growled and reached for a fiery cannon ball. Apparently, this one was the smartest of the bunch. Oh joy.

I moved away from teh direction of teh amphitheatre and Grover, turning instead to the woods. The gaint hefted two cannon balls in his huge meaty hands, and launched one after the other at me.

I yelped and dove to the side as the two flaming dodge balls flew past my ear, singeing the ends of my hair which had grown a lot longer over the past ten years so it now reached just past my shoulders.

The cannons landed just behind me, blowing a colossal crator in the earth. The force of the explosion threw me forward so I landed at the giants feet.

Disoriented and scorched , I lay for a moment until the laistrygonian picked me up in one huge red hand. I winced as it tightened its grip around me and left me gasping for breath.

Through a wave of red, I could see Epsilon and Annabeth losing against their two opponents.

Epsilon knelt on the ground, clutching the Keres wound on his shoulder while holding his sword aloft. Annabeth stood behind the giants, shouting in Ancient Greek and trying to get the gaints' attention. It wasn't working.

'You gonna taste good,' the giant holding me rumbled.

It lifted me towards it's mouth, filled with with bent yellow teeth. I closed my eyes, sure that this was the end. I was going to die.

A sudden bright explosion lit up in front of me, the light searing through my closed eyelids.

I heard a moan of agony. I yelped in surprise when the giant's grip around me slackened and I fell to the ground in a burnt heap.

Upon opening my eyes, a flood of monsters dust blew across my face. I spat the dust out, pushed myself up onto my hands and knees, and looked up into the eyes of my saviour.

My father.

'Dad,' I croaked.

Zeus smiled at me, 'Thalia. Are you okay, my daughter?'

I nodded mutely, still astounded by the fact that my father was here. He also called me daughter, and saved me, and was being gentle. Zeus' form shimmered until he was the size of a normal person.

'What-' I broke off with a cough. 'What happened?'

He sighed, 'Let's just say that the gods have realized their stupidity. We should've been a lot better parents to our children.'

I cracked a smile, 'Only took you a couple thousand years.'

Zeus chuckled and held out a hand to help me up. I looked over my shoulder at Epsilon and Annabeth, who were being helped up by Poseidon and Hades.

I turned back to me dad, 'You all came?'

He nodded, 'Most of us. The minor gods decided to remain on Olympus to defend. But the rest of us have come down to help our children against Destruction.'

'Thank the gods,' I muttered.

'Consider us thanked,' Zeus said gently, laying a hand on my shoulder. 'I know I have never been a good father, Thalia. But I am here to make up for that.'

I bit my lip, 'Destruction is more powerful than the gods. He infused the monsters with his powers, they might be able to kill even the gods.'

He shook his head, 'We've been terrible to our children. We're all willing to die for them now. We've all been jerks, and we're going to make up for it. Now are we going to stand here arguing, or fighting Destruction?'

I grinned. I like this side of my dad.

I heard a groan and helped a startled Grover to his feet. Then the three of us walked over to Poseidon, Hades, Annabeth and Epsilon. We'd just reached them when Epsilon collapsed into the dirt.

'Epsilon!' I cried, running over.

Annabeth collapsed across his chest, shaking his shoulders and screaming, 'NO! Curse you! Wake up! Please!'

'What happened?' Poseidon asked hurriedly.

Annabeth shook her head, unable to speak. Epsilon's eyes were closed, and his skin was an unhealthy grey.

'Keres scratch,' I croaked out. 'He was scratched by a Keres on his left shoulder.'

Poseidon dropped down beside Epsilon and pulled back his shreaded armour, revealing the wound. Red liquid oozed out of the gash in his skin, and sickly green lines ran across his skin like horrid  veins.

Poseidon said nothing. He only placed his hand on Epsilon's shoulder which began to glow a bright white. Within seconds, the glow faded and the sea god drew his hand back.

'If nothing happens,' he said, 'there is no more the gods can do.'

Annabeth nodded, not looking up. We all focused intently on the wound while the battle screamed and raged all around us. Yet nothing seemed to exist except our circle and Epsilon.

Slowly, the blood was sucked back in through the cut. The green veins slithered back until the were no more. Epsilon's body shuddered and recoloured, his eyes flickering open.

'Epsilon,' Annabeth breathed in relief. 'How do you feel?'

'Like death warmed up.'

He groaned and put a hand to his head, leaning back on his elbows. Annabeth squeezed him in a tight hug, which he returned.

He looked up at Poseidon, 'That's the second time you saved my life. I'm eternally grateful.'

Poseidon smiled, 'It was nothing. I imagine Chaos would be quite displeased if I let his commander die. Besides, you know of my lost son. I hoped you would help me.'

Grover, Poseidon, Zeus and I looked to Epsilon eagerly. Annabeth squeezed his arm.

The commander smiled, 'If this war ends, and if I am still alive, I will tell you absolutely everything. And I will take you to Percy Jackson.'

Annabeth's eyes widened, 'Are you sure?'

'Very,' he met Poseidon's eyes. 'Your son is a lot closer than you think. But we do not have the time to discuss such things.'

'Indeed,' Zeus agreed. 'We have a war to fight!'

'Where are the rest of the gods?' I asked my father.

Poseidon grunted, 'Demeter, Athena, Ares, Aphrodite, Hermes and Artemis are already on the battlefield aiding the campers. Apollo is with Dionysus and Hera in the amphitheatre trying to help the wounded. Hephaestus is forging weapons to replace the ones we've lost.'

'And we're here,' Hades added not-so-helpfully.

'The gods,' I muttered. 'Maybe we have a chance after all.'

Piper's POV

I stayed by Jason's side the entire time.

I spotted Leo several times fighting beside two other girls. One I'd come to learn was a daughter of Poseidon, Azelle. The other was a Chaos warrior, Angel.

Using some bizzare daughter of Aphrodite skill, I could sense some tension between the three of them. I could tell Angle liked Leo, and so did Azelle. Leo, it was a little harder to figure out. I could tell he kind of liked both of them, but didn't know it.

Jason and I were facing a good sized dragon with a couple of other campers from the Aphodite; my sisters Olivia and Polly, and my brother Damien.

In case you didn't know, a dragon is a lot like drakon, except younger and a little less dangerous. They can still kill you, of course, but they couldn't paralyse you like drakons can.

The dragon we were facing was long and sleek, it's icy blue scales too cold to touch. It could shot razor sharp spikes from its long, thin tail. Instead of breathing fire, the dragon spat ice and snow. After my experience with Khione, the snow princess, that was something I wasn't to pleased about.

'Jason!' I yelled. 'Watch out!'

He glanced over his shoulder and dove to one side as the dragon breathed ice in his direction. The temperature dropped and Jason rolled away, coated in a thin layer of snow.

'Olivia! Damien! Get it from behind!'

My siblings nodded to show they understood me. Then they snuck up behind the dragon and tried to stab their weapons through chinks in its armour. That only seemed to enrage the monster.

'Duck!' Jason yelled at Olivia and Damien.

Olivia jumped to the left and Damien to the right as a row of spikes shot out from its tail barely missing my brother.

'Polly!' Olivia screamed. 'Careful!'

Polly stumbled back from the dragon but tripped backwards over a rock. Damien, Jason, Olivia and I ran forward to help but we would be too late. My little sister would already be frozen to death.

The dragon loomed over her and she screamed.

Suddenly, a hot pink beam of light hit the dragon in the side. The monster wailed, froze and dissipated.

Jason and I ran forward to help Polly up, then the five of us looked around, trying to figure out where the blast came from. Turning around, we saw ...

'Mom!' Olivia shouted.

'Olivia! Piper! Damien! Polly!' Aphrodite smiled and walked forward to meet us, shrinking down to human size.

'Mom,' I stuttered. 'How-'

Aphrodite put a hand on my shoulder, 'The gods are here to help, of course.'

'Help?' Jason asked in bewilderment. 'All of them?'

The goddess of love pursed her lips, 'Now, not all the gods. The minor gods stayed behind to protect Olympus. But the rest of us are here.'

'What about my dad?' Jason said warily.

'He's here too,' Aphrodite promised him. 'Zeus, Poseidon and Hades stopped to help Commander Epsilon, Annabeth, Grover and your sister. They were losing against some laistrygonians.'

'Losing,' I thought I must've heard wrong. 'How could they lose with Epsilon on their side?'

Aphrodite frowned, 'You didn't know? He was scratched by a Keres, a battlefield spirit of disease and violence. He wouldn't stay in the amphitheatre to rest, so his hours were numbered.'

'He's going to die?!' Jason yelled.

'No,' Aphrodite said quickly. 'That why the brothers stopped; to help him. I imagine he's already up and fighting again.'

Jason breathed a sigh of relief. Olivia, Polly and Damien started talking to Aphrodite who didn't seem so keen to talk about relationships or clothes, which was strange.

'Why are the gods here?' I asked suddenly.

My siblings and Jason started at me in shock. However, Aphrodite didn't seem the least bit offended.

'The gods have realized their selfishness, Piper,' my mom said sadly. 'We have realized that we should've paid more attention to our children. Therefore we have come to make ammends by helping in this war.'

'Even you?' Damien asked cautiously.

Aphrodite nodded, 'Even me. All the gods are here. Dionysus, Hera and Apollo are all helping in the amphitheatre. The rest of us are out on the battlefield.'

She smiled at me, but I hesitated to return it.

Aphrodite put her hand on my shoulder. Ash covered her finger tips and her fingers weren't even manicured or polished. I studied her closer and realized that her hair was put up in a messy ponytail, and she wore light weight bronze armour that wasn't even designer.

'I've changed, Piper,' Aphrodite assured me. 'We all have. We've finally come to our senses and realized what we've done, and what we should've done.'

She looked straight at me, and in her ever changing eyes I could see sincerity and regret.

I smiled back at my mom. Maybe the gods have changed. For the better.

Poseidon's POV

(Because I've got a lot of requests for a gods POV)

After many arguments, the gods finally decided to come down here to aid the campers and Chaos warriors fight Destruction. It was a majority verdict, though every god raised their hand to help.

I only agreed to come to keep the peace on Olympus and to help our children. But I only had one child in the last 80 years, and he was MIA.

But now, I had reason to hope. Commander Epsilon promised me that he knew about my son, Perseus Jackson. He promised me that my boy would come home, so I could say sorry. It had been ten years. Ten years in which my only son thought I was the monster. I had to say sorry.

But before that could happen, I need to help in this war.

Epsilon had explained that the monsters had been imbued with the power of Destruction, making them stronger, tougher and much more powerful. They were powerful enough to kill even a god.

I ran towards the battlefield in the size of a mortal man with my brothers, Epsilon, Annabeth, Thalia and Grover. Even as a god who'd seen war many times, the sight of the battlefield shocked me to the core.

Bodies littered the ground. A fading fire wall surrounded the lake and amphitheatre, keeping the enemy in, and preventing any way out. The sounds of clashing metal and tormented screams were ear splitting. The air tasted of ash and blood.

'We need to head where we're most needed,' Epsilon shouted over the noise.

'But where's that?' Zeus yelled back.

Epsilon shook his head, 'I don't know. Everywhere?'

'Epsilon, over there!' Annabeth pointed. 'Flames, Angel and Azelle!'

'Azelle?' The name rang on my tongue, sending shivers down my spine because I recognized it.

'Who is this girl?' I demanded.

'Is this really the time, brother?' Hades growled.

'Tell me!' I shouted at the commander.

There was something in his hesitation that made me suspscious. And when he turned to me, I could swear his eyes flashed sea green beneath his helmet before they dimmed and shadows took over.

'Azelle is a daughter of yours,' he said slowly. 'She helped us escape Destruction's Fortress. Destrcution made her immortal to serve him forever. She was born in-'

'1720,' I finished in a whisper. 'I remember her now. She went missing when she was five years old, along with her whole family and village. I could never find her.'

'Because Destruction kidnapped her,' Annabeth said. 'She's lived in the Black Realm for the past three hundred years.'

'Three hundred-' I broke off. 'Three hundred years in which my daughter never knew me, never knew I cared. I thought she and her mother were dead. I never knew.'

'But now you do,' Epsilon said. 'You have the chance to make it up to her. You can show Azelle that you do care, her and Percy.'

He knew that he'd struck a cord. He knew that I wanted, more than anything, to find my son. He knew that I had to apologize to Percy, to finally say I'm sorry.

'I would do anything,' I croaked, 'for my children. For Azelle and Percy, I would do anything.'

'Then fight!' Epsilon declared. 'Fight for the campers, for the world, for your children!'

'I will fight!' I shouted, brandishing my trident.

Epsilon smiled at me. Annabeth, Thalia and Grover exchanged knowing, happy looks. Hades and Zeus clapped me on the shoulders. And that's when we heard it.

A shrill, echoing shriek sounded throughout the valley.

My heart sunk and my brothers faces paled as we recognized the screech. A monster that even the gods thought was a myth.

And now that myth was coming right at us.

I think this chapter is longer than usual. It certainly took a while for me to write. Several hours of sitting in front of my laptop staring at the screen. See, I have a spare school laptop while my normal one is being repaired, and the spare is so stupid. It shut down my internet three times so I had to write everything all over again. Stupid spare laptop ...

Im going to try to finish this book before the 6th so I can enter it in the Wattys. Expect a few updates in the next couple of days. If I don't enter it in time, oh well. I'm not sure I got a chance anyway.

Anyways, thanks for reading. I don't really have much to say except please vote, comment and follow! Maybe I should think up a cool slogan. Hmm, I'll have to think about that.

Thanks for all your support and comments! You guys rock!
