The Title
Now we come to the most exciting part: the title!
I really should have made a chapter about this before the trailer was released but these were some of my ideas:
The Return of the Last Jedi
From darkness
The Dark Prince (referring to Ben)
The Dark Knight Rises (because, Kylo Master of the knights of Ren Rises out of darkness & I couldn't help myself)
I will not be the last Jedi
Into balance
The Last hope
Here's the title!
I love it!
I think this title surprised me the most of any Star Wars movie, I wasn't expecting the Force Awakens at all, so the whole thing was a surprise to me. The Last Jedi surprised me, but not. I knew that the movie would reintroduce Luke Skywalker and he is the Last Jedi, so it wasn't a huge surprise to me.
But the Rise of Skywalker was pretty unexpected.
So most Star Wars titles have multiple meanings.
(I'm not doing the prequels because their titles have literal meanings)
A New Hope
The obvious meaning of this title is that Luke is a new hope.
But there's more to it than that. Obi Wan Kenobi was Leia's only hope, but it was Luke who rescued her and became her new hope.
I also feel that this title is just as much about Leia as it is Luke. She is hope. All of her best quotes are about hope.
"Hope." -Leia, Rogue One
"Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope." - Leia, A New Hope
(And my personal favorite, even though it wasn't spoken by her the ones who said it were quoting her.)
"Hope is like the sun, if you only believe in it when you see it, how will you get through the night?" - the Last Jedi
Also Rogue One gives the title new meaning.
"Rebellions are built on hope."
At the end of Rogue One someone asked Leia what the Death Star plans were, her answer was: "hope"
So A New Hope, (after Rouge One came out) could also be talking about the Death Star plans, depending upon your point of view.
The Return of the Jedi
(I'm skipping The Empire Strikes Back, just because it really doesn't have but one obvious meaning, just like the prequel titles)
The Return of the Jedi is most importantly describing Anakin's return from the Dark Side, He is the Jedi who returned.
But this can also describe the return of the Jedi, as in the time of the Jedi has returned. Remember a group of Jedi is spelt the same way as one Jedi.
The Force Awakens
The title of the Force Awakens speaks mostly about the awakening of the Force in Rey.
But it can also refer to the awakening of the Light Side, which has been dormant after Ben turned to the Dark Side.
It can also refer to the awakening of Luke Skywalker at the end of the movie.
And it can also be the awakening of the Force connection between Rey and Ben.
The Last Jedi
The Last Jedi refers mostly to Luke Skywalker.
It can mean that he will be the last Jedi, that Rey will become a different kind of Force user, which I think she will. Just because I don't think that she will go by the old Jedi codes from the prequels, like forbidden attachments. Attachments are what she wants more than anything, deep down.
The Last Jedi is also Luke's title, given to him by Yoda in the Return of the Jedi.
"When gone I am, the Last of the Jedi you will be."
The title could also mean that Rey is now the Last Jedi.
And again Jedi can be more than one.
So I think that the title of Episode IX: "The Rise Of Skywalker" also has multiple meanings.
I know that there are probably some fans who still think that Rey is Luke's daughter and that this title is taking about her. I do not think that is the case.
There are too many flaws in that theory. (Who was her mother, why did Luke abandon her, why wouldn't they have felt a connection to each other?)
J.J. Abrams who directed The Force Awakens is also directing The Rise Of Skywalker. And he said that Rey's parents were not in the Force Awakens, so unless he changed his mind she's not Luke's daughter.
Honestly this is more a matter of opinion, but if Rey has to be related to Ben I would prefer for her to be Han and Leia's daughter. In the Last Jedi she had nothing close to a father daughter relationship with Luke. And she and Ben have too close of a connection to be nothing more than cousins. (But if they do end up being related my heart will be broken, I've shipped them since the first time I watched the Force Awakens)
I have a lot more reasons why I don't believe that she is Luke's daughter, but that's not what this chapter is about. I have written several chapters about this though. Theory #6 Light, darkness, balance, (which explains why I think the lightsaber called to Rey, and that it had nothing to do with her being Luke's daughter) theory #7 Rey is a Solo (explaining why I don't think she has to be related to any of the other characters) theory #8 Rey's parents, theory #23 who are Rey's parents (my thoughts on all theories about Rey's parents) theory #25 Rey part 1, theory #26 Rey part 2, theory #27 Rey part 3, and I'm planning on writing another theory called Rey's part 4, because I have found more evidence since I wrote those chapters.
I do think that this title does apply to Luke Skywalker.
In the Force Awakens the map to Luke was referred to as "the map to Skywalker." Which is why I chose to title my alternate version of the Force Awakens "The Search For Skywalker."
This title can refer to Luke Skywalker, returning or rising as a Force ghost. (Which we all know is going to happen.)
But there is another possibility that most fans have not considered. And I'm not saying that it's true, I'm just trying to lay out all of the possibilities that have come to my mind, just for fun.
Luke Skywalker might not actually be dead.
I know that sounds ridiculous, but in the Last Jedi there were a lot of new things in the Force that we have never seen, Rey and Ben's Force connection, and Luke's appearance at the end of the Last Jedi.
We all know that his death was not caused by his fight against Kylo Ren, but because he used the Force in a way that was too much for him.
When Rey and Kylo Ren had their first Force connection, Kylo Ren thought that she was causing it at first, but then he said "you can't be doing this, the effort would kill you." If Luke is dead, that was what caused it.
But is he dead? We saw him disappear, just as Yoda and Obi Wan had. But does that confirm his death? He could have teleported himself to another place, or another diminution.
This is just a thought.
The Rise of Skywalker
What if this title is also talking about Anakin Skywalker!
What if we actually get to see an Anakin Skywalker Force ghost!! Anakin could be the Skywalker who rises.
Lastly, the title could be talking about Ben, I know that his last name is Solo. But everyone seems to forget that he is a Skywalker. His mother was Leia, who was the daughter of Anakin Skywalker. He is the heir of Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader.
Perhaps it means that he rises and becomes Ben again.
Or it could mean that he takes the role of the chosen one, the Skywalker destiny.
It could mean that the Skywalker within him rises!
I'm sure some fans of Star Wars who doesn't like Kylo Ren/ Ben Solo is probably thinking that there's no way that the title is about him. But if you're still not convinced that this a possibility, here's another thought:
The Revenge of the Sith was titled after the villain.
The Return of the Jedi was titled after Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker the "villain"
The Rise of Skywalker could be titled after Kylo Ren/Ben Solo the "villain"
And if it is, then it can only mean that he will be redeemed.
The title could mean anyone of these or even all of them. Or they could surprise me and do none of these.
Please comment and share your thoughts.
