Chapter 15 - One step at a time...

---Daniel's POV---

It was kind of awkward to be guided into the police station, being supported by Colton, who had a gentle yet firm hold of my lower arm.

I had blushed and stuttered over my words as Colton had nearly lifted me out of his car, placing me on my feet before curling his arm around my own. And now he was waiting patiently by my side, allowing me to take the few steps up into the police station.

With Colton to my right, Bruce had instantly taken place at my left, body pressed against my legs and looking up dutifully.

It almost made me feel teary eyed, standing there on the steps and being supported by the man I've grown to love and my ever faithful companion that had stuck to my side since we've met.

"One more step, love." Colton murmured, pressing a kiss to my cheek when I paused for a moment. He flashed a reassuring grin my way when I huffed in frustration.

"Remember, the doctors told you it would take some time before these normal, everyday tasks become, well, normal again."

True, but that didn't mean I liked it. It was annoying as hell to be exhausted over the smallest tasks that, before my coma, I would've been able to handle just fine.

It certainly didn't help that my medication that helped suppress the seizures, was also making me drowsy and clumsy to boot.

Though apparently, that made me only more adorable in Colton's eyes. To trip over my feet and fall in his arms, or to nod off on the couch against his shoulder.

And each time he had smiled warmly, kissing me tenderly to the point that I didn't know if I was blushing from my recent trip or from his kiss.

As if the medication wanted to prove a point, I teetered dangerously on my feet, wobbling backwards into Colton. The second I looked up, blush already heating my cheeks, he sent me a cheeky wink and kissed me on the lips.

"Good to know I can still make you swoon." He chuckled, bursting out into laughter when I smacked his stomach before I could stop myself.

He opened the door whilst still laughing, instantly drawing attention from the people working at their desks.

Earl grinned, sending me a cheeky wink as undoubtedly my flushed face showed exactly why Colton was laughing.

Bruce glanced at me to reassure himself I was doing alright before he trotted forwards. His tail instantly flexed into a wag as he greeted everyone, particularly Jimmy, who had dog treats in his pockets.

I smiled gratefully, as Bruce deserved to be coddled and treated, especially after what happened. Colton had told me what had happened that faithful day, as I had no memory of what happened.

And each time that I tried to think back, all I got was nauseating flashes of boots and smirks, a ringing in my ear and the metallic taste of blood in my mouth.

Like clockwork, I felt a nose nudge against my thigh as Bruce looked up at me, whimpering softly. "I'm okay buddy." I murmured, scratching behind his ear.

He didn't seem to believe me, pressing himself against my thigh even with the temptation of Jimmy's dog treats.

"Have a seat, Daniel." Jimmy said, eying me worriedly. No doubt they were fearing for an incoming seizure but I felt fine. Slightly dizzy, but fine.

That didn't stop Colton from nearly picking me up and plopping me on the seat. Earl was half out of his own seat while Andrew was on his way to the small dining area to get a fizzy drink.

"You have the bad habit of pushing yourself too far, hun." Colton murmured before pressing a kiss to my forehead, sighing in my hair when there was a barely hidden laugh heard behind him.

Bruce nuzzled closer, making me sigh and scratch his ears gently. "I know bud, I know. Thanks for letting me know." I murmured, feeling slightly dizzy due to an oncoming seizure.

The crew reacted instantly at Colton's nod, rushing to roll out the soft blanket they had provided for me. The second I laid down on it, Bruce stepped closer, head held low with a little whine.

I smiled reassuringly, feeling another kiss press against my forehead. My eyes flitted to Colton before the seizure's aura flashed and then I lost sight.

Luckily the seizure didn't last too long, but it was still embarrassing to wake up with people staring at me. Especially with drool dangling from my mouth and dripping down my chin.

"Are you alright, darling?" Colton asked, brushing the hair out of my face and used a handkerchief to dab at the saliva.

I flushed, attempting to take the handkerchief out of his hands to do it myself but Colton smiled and shook his head gently, dodging my weak attempts to do so.

His smile twitched at the blush that graced my cheeks, eyes twinkling with amusement as he cleaned me up. "Are you feeling well enough to try and sit up?" He asked, helping me upright when I nodded.

The rest of the crew took a few steps back to give us some room as Colton managed to sit me back upright. Bruce leaned against my side, providing me with some balance as I still felt slightly dizzy.

"Weren't the meds supposed to stop his seizures?" Earl asked with a hint of confusion, handing me my glass and making sure I didn't drop it.

"It suppresses them but doesn't take them away." Colton explained, pressing a kiss to my temple as I slowly took a few sips of my soda. "We're already grateful that his seizures have been put under control."

I nodded, remembering that Colton has already breached this subject with my doctor. He had told us that it would take a while to find the right meds that accurately stopped most, if not all of the seizures.

And it had been a long while since my last seizure, which was when I was still in the hospital. Bruce laid down and I let out a little sigh of relief, realized that I was in the clear, at least for now.

"So, what brings you guys here?" Jimmy asked with a grin while Andrew excused himself to accept a phone call.

"Daniel needed to get out of the house and you guys have been blowing up my phone for updates, so here we are." Colton joked.

He was right though. It was amusing how close everyone had grown, how these people, seemingly strangers, cared so much about me.

Even to the point where they had taken precautions, clearly shown by the blanket they had ready, even if I hadn't been here in a while.

I scratched Bruce behind the ear, happy that at least my seizures had calmed down significantly. Still, Bruce had spent every waking moment by my side, never taking his eyes off of me.

Surely, even if I finally found medication that prevented my seizures completely, it would take a long, looong while before Bruce realized that he didn't need to work anymore.

Earl broke the momentary silence with a sigh, sliding some paperwork over to Colton and I, who glanced at it with a raised eyebrow.

"It's the results of Daniel's case." Earl said, smiling as I glanced worriedly at the thick folder before letting out a sigh of relief when he added "All culprits are in jail."

To say that the people had been outraged was putting it lightly. As soon as word got out that one of the city's councilmembers had been bribing officers and buying off families of his son's victims, paying them hush money, they were outraged.

More victims raised their voices, including a girl that had miraculously escaped being molested by the group thanks to her brother and his friends.

Of course, her brother and friends had been slapped with several lawsuits for assaulting the councilmember's son, as he had even tried to sue them for attempted murder.

And of course, there was the issue of money laundering, where the pompous bastard had been draining funds from charities into his own pockets.

"Councilmember Erwin Fredrickson, his son Patrick Fredrickson along with all of Patrick's friends have been sentenced to jail for varying times." Colton read, grinning slightly as I read along over his shoulder.

The list of their transgressions was surprisingly long, ranging from abuse, assault, breaking and entry, petty theft, grand theft auto, several DUI's, substance abuse, a hit and run incident and a recent armed robbery where the shop keep had been rendered unable to work due to the sustained injuries and the acquired PTSD.

"His father covered all that up?" I questioned with shock as the list kept going. While his son was the worst, the friends criminal records were nothing to sneeze at.

Earl nodded, face twisted in disgust. "Surprisingly, the grand theft auto was one of the easiest crimes to dig up, even though they tried to sweep it under the rug as a minor offence while I would've judged it as a federal offence."

When I just blinked up at him, Earl chuckled, quickly realizing I was confused and amended, "Normally the situation would be judged. Stealing a car is one thing but we take in account what leads up to the theft. Was it stolen from a driveway? Borrowed and never returned? Or was it stolen under gunpoint?"

I nodded, understanding the issue a bit more before blinking at Colton as he scoffed and flipped through the papers before pointing out a few lines in the text.

As I read, I felt nausea settle in my stomach, not from an upcoming seizure but what this filth was capable of.

"They stole a car...with kids in it? And then took it for a joyride at top speeds, leaving the kids stranded miles away from their mother?" I gasped.

Colton nodded, glaring at the paper as he sighed. "Don't feel sorry for those bastards rotting in jail. While their upbringing probably didn't help in guiding them on the right path, if they had any inner moral compass, they would've at least known right from wrong."

He pulled me closer against his chest, pressing his lips against my forehead before he sighed. "Those bastards wouldn't have hesitated to kill you. I wouldn't be surprised if more crimes would soon be uncovered."

I nodded, closing my eyes for a moment. I felt oddly guilty for being glad that I was still alive after hearing what they had done to other people.

And there was a sick , twisted sense of joy that finally they got what was coming to them. Smiling against Colton's skin, I relaxed in his hold, listening to the conversation above me, sometimes joining in as I just rested within Colton's arms.

Colton occasionally glanced down at me, verifying that I was doing okay. More often than not, his lips pressed against my hair, my jaw or my forehead, hugging me tighter or letting his fingers mindlessly trace over my arms and side.

I truly am very lucky...
