Chapter 13 - Back home...I think?
---Colton's POV---
My fingers drummed on the steering wheel as I kept a close eye on the light, waiting for it to change into green rather impatiently. Today was the day that Daniel could finally come home, where I knew for sure that he was safe and sound.
A car honked behind me, making me raise my hand in apology as I continued driving, sighing to myself as I thought about the past few months.
Daniel woke up, yes. But he didn't come out of the struggle unscathed.
The beating followed by the lasting seizures had left their mark on Daniel. I knew the doctors had warned me when he had woken up, telling me that there was a possibility that Daniel wouldn't be the same as before the assault.
Sadly enough, they were right. Daniel had to relearn a lot of things; how to swallow, how to drink and how to speak. At times his pronunciations were off-key and childlike but he tried his best and that was all I could ask for.
I parked the car, smiling at the nurse as she accompanied Daniel out, who was holding onto Bruce's leash with a smile on his face. His eyes sparkled vividly when I stepped out, already reaching forwards on weak legs as I guided him to the car and sat him down.
Bruce was quick to jump inside, resting his head on Daniel's shoulder with a content sigh. Poor dog must be relaxing now that we could finally bring Daniel back home. The door closed with a soft thud and I sighed softly, knowing we still had a long way ahead of us.
"Did you take your pills?" I asked as soon as I was in the car, smiling at Daniel as he frowned and nodded. The only good thing that came of this whole situation was the fact that Daniel's seizures were now spotted and held under control by medication.
With any luck, Daniel would never seize again.
"Yeah, I think I did. I mean, I just had breakfast and that's when they gave me the meds." He explained, eying me warily as my smile loosened a bit before I squeezed his hand gently.
"Its two pm Daniel, you just had your lunch but I'm sure the nurses did give you your medication at breakfast." I gently explained, knowing that Daniel would be frustrated with himself but he couldn't help it.
Like clockwork, his expression soured slightly, a frown marring his features as he glanced at the clock to reaffirm it was indeed afternoon. He murmured a soft "Oh..." before reaching up to scratch Bruce's chin.
I squeezed his hand and smiled at him in reassurance. "We'll check the pill-case to make sure, alright?" He nodded at that, probably remembering the small labeled container the doctors had packed along with his medicine.
It was useful in Daniel's condition, as the blunt head-trauma combined with the coma had impaired his short-therm memory. He could perfectly recount events that happened years ago, even things he did earlier in the day. But sadly everything in the past few hours seemed to be slipping out of his grasp.
The frustration was clear on his face, as he desperately tried to remember something he wasn't sure of, but quite possibly did. The doctors had assured both of us that it was most likely only a temporarily matter but they couldn't state how long it would take.
It could be a few days, a few weeks, even several months or years. But I would be by Daniel's side, help him over this hurdle.
When we arrived home, he blinked and looked at the whole house, smiling as I walked around the car before carrying him inside. He snuggled into my hold, fingers clicking slightly so Bruce would follow.
It was tempting to just carry him around everywhere, do everything for him and tell Daniel to sit down and relax but I knew I couldn't do that. At least, not now, especially not now when he needed some reassurance that he wasn't completely dependent of me.
So I clenched my jaw and set him down on his feet, barely able to stop myself from holding my hands out in case he'd fall. It was ridiculous of me and I knew it, but after having lost sight on Daniel, not being with him before almost losing him-
"Colton?"
I blinked, looking up before realizing I had paused halfway in the motions of unwrapping my scarf and taking off my jacket. Daniel was leaning against the doorway, one hand against the golden wood while the other was resting on Bruce's head.
Flitting his eyes over my body, the questioning look turned understanding before he chuckled softly. "Want me to help you?" I cleared my throat and quickly hung away my coat before ushering Daniel further in the house.
"Yes, why don't you pick a movie while I get us some snacks?" I smiled, watching for a moment as he moved to the living room before I went into the kitchen and went about making some popcorn.
I glanced up to make sure he was doing fine before smiling to myself when I realized Daniel was hesitantly coming back. A familiar frown on his face as his eyes glanced back and forth between the living room and the kitchen.
Judging by his awkward fumbling and the way he hopefully glanced at me, he forgot why he went to the living room in the first place. So instead of pointing out what he forgot, I grabbed a few glasses and a bottle of soda before holding it out.
"Good that you came back, why don't you take the drinks and I'll bring the snacks and then we'll watch a movie." I grinned as his eyes brightened a bit, no doubt relieved that I didn't unintentionally rub it in.
"Okay." He murmured, grabbing the glasses and bringing them to the livingroom first before coming back to grab the bottle. By that time I had grabbed a few bags of sweets and chips, so I just followed him into the living room and grinned as he settled down in the seat.
I tossed the remote in the seat while digging up a few of the soft throw blankets, handing one to Daniel. He eagerly took it and cuddled underneath it before holding it open. I accepted the invitation gladly and snuggled up to him, grabbing him by the hips so I could turn us around, with him lying in front of me, back to chest.
His eyes were fixed on the screen a few minutes later, struggling to keep his full attention on the movie as his head lolled to the side every minute or so Pressing my lips to his hair, I gently tugged him down so his head rested on my arm, my arm resting over his hip, hand on his chest
Just like I expected, Daniel fell asleep a few seconds later; Body completely relaxed, his fingers weakly curled around my hand on his chest and the softest of snores escaping his parted mouth I reached for the remote and lowered the volume before kissing his cheek and sighing contently
Even Bruce huffed out a happy pant as he tapped closer, sniffing at the table that held our snacks until he leaned on the couch to sniff at Daniel's face. I chuckled as Daniel's face scrunched up from the ticklish feeling before I quickly distracted Bruce, stopping him from waking up the poor guy.
After one last sniff, Bruce slowly walked towards the bed I had bought for him and walked in it, making several circles and scratching at the fabric a few times before he curled up on it. Why dogs needed to circle around before lying in the bed, I'd never understand but it was still amusing to watch each time he'd done so.
Looking down at Daniel, I felt my heart warm with excitement at finally having him in my arms again. My boyfriend was finally home and we could start our future together, without having to worry about anything at all.
I was saving up my money to give him the option to get an education, if he wished to do so. Whatever he wanted to do, I'd gladly and full-heartedly support him.
For the first time in months, I managed to fall asleep in an instant and slept soundly without any dreams. Probably because everything that I wanted, everything I needed, was sleeping right beside me, wrapped in my arms.
