Chapter two
As the two co-parents were painting the nursery a warm shade of yellow, they couldn't help but reminisce about the past few months. The whirlwind of emotions, the constant worry about the infants' well-being, and the uncertainties of their own future. But through it all, they had each other. And as they carefully hung up the artwork they had chosen for the walls, they felt a sense of accomplishment and anticipation.
"Should Lily have a warm shade of yellow? Is it going to be too bright for her eyes?" Alex asked, looking at the tiny infant in her tank. Seraphina smiled at him and shook her head. "I think it's perfect. She's going to love it, just like we do. It's such a happy color, don't you think?" She glanced at the other two tanks, where Adam and Samuel were sleeping soundly. "And we can always change it later if they don't like it, but I think they'll love it just as much as we do," she said with a smile.
Alex nodded in agreement, unable to wipe the smile from his face. The happiness that filled his heart was palpable. He couldn't help but marvel at the fact that just a few months ago, they were nothing more than scientists working on a project. Now, they were parents. Real, honest-to-goodness parents. And the three little beings in front of them were their children. Their world. Their everything.
"We have about six months left until the triplets are born, so we got pink, blue, and yellow for the nursery," Seraphina said, pointing to the walls as she walked around the room. "I just hope that they'll like their colors once they're here. I mean, it's not like we can ask them, right?" She chuckled, leaning down to pick up a soft, yellow blanket from the floor.
Alex smiled at Seraphina's words, his gaze drifting back to the infants in their tanks. "They'll love their colors," he said with confidence. "I just can't wait to see them grow up in this room. It's going to be filled with so much love and laughter. And we'll be right here, beside them, every step of the way." He paused for a moment, his expression turning serious. "I know raising triplets won't be easy, but we'll figure it out together. We'll be the best parents we can possibly be, and we'll make sure they know how much they are loved," he said, his voice cracking slightly as he fought back tears.
Seraphina smiled at Alex, her eyes shining with the same emotion he felt. "I know we will, Alex. We'll make sure they have the best life possible. And even when things get tough, we'll be there for them, just like we promised." She paused, glancing around the room again.
The two co-parents spent the rest of the day finishing up the nursery, carefully choosing each toy, blanket, and piece of furniture. They debated over the perfect crib set, eventually settling on a set that combined the colors of their tanks in a subtle, coordinated design. They hung up colorful mobiles above each tank, filled the bookshelf with stories about love, friendship, and adventure, and placed a soft, plush animal in each infant's reach.
"The babies are going to love this when they come home!" Seraphina exclaimed, hanging a brightly colored mobile above Adam's tank. "I can just picture it: They'll be lying here, all cozy and warm, and they'll reach up and bat at the elephant or the giraffe as they spin around." She smiled down at the tiny infant, admiring his delicate features.
She wanted to hold Adam in her arms but couldn't, not yet. She knew they had to wait until they were cleared by the doctor and until they could bring the infants home. But standing there, looking down at him, she felt an overwhelming sense of love and protectiveness. It was almost painful, like her heart was going to burst right out of her chest.
Seraphina glanced over at Alex, who was sitting on the floor, gently running his fingers through Samuel's thick, dark hair. His expression mirrored her own; she could see the love shining in his eyes and the determination to be the best father he could be. She knew that they were going to make a great team and that, together, they could handle anything that came their way.
"Hey, let's take a break," she said, nodding toward the door. "We've been working on this all day, and I think we're both exhausted. Why don't we go grab some dinner, then come back and finish up the rest of the room?" She suggested, already beginning to envision the perfect meal: a delicious pasta dish with a crisp salad on the side, and maybe a decadent chocolate lava cake for dessert.
"This is a great idea," Alex agreed, standing up and stretching. "I'm starving. How about we get some takeout? We could grab some Chinese or maybe some Italian." he suggested, his stomach growling at the thought of food.
Seraphina thought for a moment, considering their options. "I'm in the mood for Italian, actually," she said with a grin. "But we could also order a little something from that new Chinese place down the street. You know, to mix it up a bit." She glanced over at Alex, who nodded in agreement. "Okay, let's do that. We'll get enough food for two meals, just in case we get too tired to finish everything tonight," she suggested with a laugh.
She realized how much they were already thinking about the future and about their lives as parents. It was both exciting and terrifying, but she couldn't imagine doing it with anyone else. As they walked down the quiet residential street to the Italian restaurant, she couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment wash over her. The air was cool and crisp, the sky a deep shade of blue, and the sound of cars passing by created a soothing background noise.
Inside the restaurant, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, with dim lights and soft music playing in the background. They were seated at a cozy booth near the window, where they could watch the world go by while they enjoyed their meal. The waiter, a middle-aged man with a kind smile, took their orders and promised to bring out their food shortly.
"We haven't treated ourselves for some time, haven't we?" Seraphina asked, taking a sip of her wine. "It's nice to just be out, you know? to pretend that things are normal, even if they're not quite yet." She smiled at Alex, who nodded in agreement.
"I'm glad we decided to do this. It's going to be a wild ride, but I think we're up for it,she said, taking another sip of her wine. "I mean, look at us: we've got a whole room full of toys, books, and stuffed animals. We've got names picked out. We've even got a nursery. We're basically ready to go." She giggled, with a hint of nervousness in her voice.
Alex chuckled lightly, his chest rumbling against his plate. "Yeah, we really are. I mean, I've never been more excited and terrified at the same time." He took a sip of his wine before continuing. "But you know what? We've got each other. We've got the babies. And we've got a lot of love to give. I think we're going to be just fine." He reached across the table and squeezed her hand, his gaze holding hers.
The night went on as the happy duo enjoyed their dinner. The conversation flowed effortlessly, with laughter and stories of their past filling the air. They discussed their favorite childhood memories, their hopes and dreams for the future, and the challenges they were sure to face as parents. Through it all, there was a sense of unity between them—a bond that went beyond anything either of them had ever experienced.
Seraphina and Alex walked out of the restaurant, their stomachs full and their hearts even fuller. The air was cool and crisp, and they could feel the energy of the city all around them. They held hands as they walked, lost in their own thoughts about the future and about their lives together as parents.
