Chapter three

"That was fun." Seraphina chirped as they strolled down the sidewalk. "I can't wait to do it again, once things settle down a bit." She paused, considering the weight of her words. "I mean, once we get the hang of things," she added with a small laugh.

Alex smiled down at her, squeezing her hand gently. "Yeah, it was. And we'll figure it out together. We'll be great parents, you'll see," he said, his voice filled with confidence and love. "But for now," he continued, leading her down a quiet side street, "let's get some ice cream. I've been craving something sweet all night," he winked at her.

Seraphina blushed, her face turning a delicate shade of pink. "Ice cream sounds wonderful. I've had a sweet tooth all night too." she said, her voice barely above a whisper. They continued walking, the soft glow of streetlights guiding their way through the darkness. After a few more steps, they came upon a small, family-owned ice cream parlor with a chalkboard sign out front advertising their daily flavors. The smell of fresh waffle cones and sweet, creamy ice cream filled the air, making Seraphina's stomach rumble.

Alex chuckled lightly, his eyes glinting with mischief. "You know, you're going to make me fat if you keep talking about dessert all the time." He teased her, pulling her closer. She rolled her eyes but couldn't help but laugh as they approached the ice cream parlor. The warm, inviting scent of fresh waffle cones and rich ice cream filled the air, making her mouth water.

"And I'm on a diet." He teased back, leaning in to press a kiss against her lips. The taste of wine and ice cream mingled on their tongues as they shared the brief, sweet moment. Seraphina felt her heart skip a beat and her stomach do flips. She couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the love she felt for him in that moment.

With her lips still tingling from the kiss, Seraphina looked up at Alex, her eyes shining with love and affection. She couldn't help but smile as they stepped inside the cozy ice cream parlor, the warm light and happy chatter filling the air. The scent of freshly made waffle cones and delicious ice cream filled her nose.

"What would you like?" Alex asked, his voice as deep and smooth as it always was when he was near her. She felt herself melting inside at the sound of it.

"What about chocolate? I haven't had that in a long time." Seraphina replied, her eyes scanning the flavors on the chalkboard behind the counter. Alex nodded in agreement, his own gaze lingering on the chocolate option as well. "Or maybe we could share a scoop each, just to make sure we try something else too," he suggested with a grin.

Seraphina considered his suggestion for a moment, her eyes lighting up with excitement. "Oh! I haven't had a mint chocolate chip in forever. That sounds delicious!" She pointed to the chalkboard, her stomach already growling in anticipation. Alex nodded in agreement, his gaze drifting over to the mint option before settling back on her. There was something about seeing her so excited that made him feel warm inside.

"She deserves a break," he thought to himself. "She's been through so much." And then, as if reading his mind, Seraphina turned to him and said, "You know, I've been thinking..." Her voice trailed off, and her expression was a mix of uncertainty and determination. Alex felt his heart skip a beat, his stomach flip-flopping with anticipation.

Seraphina took a deep breath, gathering her courage before continuing. "I've been thinking that maybe we should consider moving. Somewhere where we can start fresh, away from everything that's happened here. Somewhere we can raise our children in peace and safety." Her words hung in the air between them, weighty and significant. Alex's expression turned serious as he considered her proposal.

"What about your lab? You have worked so hard on it for years." Alex's voice trailed off, his expression filled with concern. He knew how much she had put into her research and how important it was to her. Seraphina's face softened, her eyes filling with understanding.

"I can make a new one. This place...it's not the same anymore. I need to start over," Seraphina said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. Her eyes met his, unwavering and resolute. There was a sense of finality in her words, a decision that had been weighing on her mind for some time now. Alex studied her face, trying to read the emotions that played across it. He knew she was strong, but he could also see the pain and exhaustion that had taken their toll on her. He reached out, taking her hand in his and giving it a reassuring squeeze.

"Are you planning on making a new creation?" Alex asked carefully, his voice soft and gentle. He knew that Seraphina had been working on something big before everything had happened—something that she had been so passionate about. Perhaps if she could focus her energy on a new project or a new purpose, it would help her to heal and move forward.

Seraphina nodded her head slowly, her gaze fixed on their intertwined hands. "Yes," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "I have an idea. Something I've been thinking about for a while now. It's different this time. It's not just about creating something new. It's about making something that can change the world, something that can make a real difference." Her voice gained strength as she spoke, and her eyes shone with determination.

Alex honestly didn't want to ask what she has been wanting to create next and play god, as she has done many times in the past, but the glint in her eyes says a lot, and he is sure it's something that can make a real difference. He is afraid that it might bring back the nightmares that haunted her dreams and make her create something terrible, like the creature that was hunting them down. He is afraid that if she were to continue with her research, it might destroy her again.

"Please don't tell me you want to bring Megalodon next. This thing is already out of control; it's a monster." Alex said, his voice still gentle but laced with concern. He knew how much she had suffered because of the creature she had created before. He didn't want her to go through the same thing again.

Seraphina's expression softened as she took in Alex's concern. She knew how much he had come to care for her and their children, and she didn't want to put him through any more pain or suffering. "No, my love," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's not like that. This time, it's different. It's not about creating something that could be a weapon or a monster. It's about... giving people hope. It's about using my knowledge and my abilities to make a real difference in the world." Her eyes met his, filled with sincerity and determination.

Suddenly, Seraphina's phone began to ring; it's an unknown number. Alex looks at her worriedly. She excused herself and took the call. Her expression turned grave. She murmured something and listened intently.

"Seraphina, it's your boss, Harvey. We need you back at the lab immediately. Something has gone wrong with the experiments, and you're the only one who can fix it. You know how important this is, so please hurry." Seraphina listened with growing concern as her former boss pleaded with her. She glanced over at Alex, who looked worried but supportive.

"It was Harvey; he needed me to come back to the lab immediately. Something went wrong with the experiments, and he said only I could fix it. He told me how important this is." Seraphina explained to Alex that her voice was shaky. "I have to go back. I can't abandon them now. They need me." She bit her lip, fighting back the conflicting emotions that threatened to overwhelm her.

"It wasn't the triplets, is it?" Alex asked, worry evident in his voice. He knew how much Seraphina loved her creations.

Seraphina nodded her head, tears welling up in her eyes. "No, it's not the triplets. It's something else—something I created a long time ago. I can't abandon them now, Alex. They need me." Her voice was shaky, and her expression was torn between her love for her family and her sense of duty to her former colleagues.

"Let's go then," Alex said, taking her hand in his. "We'll go together, and we'll face this together. I'll be by your side the whole time, okay? Whatever it is, we can handle it. You're strong, you're smart, and you're brave. We'll get through this." He squeezed her hand reassuringly.

As the happy couple walks towards the lab, they wonder what could be the problem with Seraphina's old experiment. As they arrive at the lab, they are greeted by a chaotic scene. Scientists are running around in panic, shouting orders, and frantically working on something. Harvey, Seraphina's former boss, spots them and rushes over to them.

"It's the raptor you made. He escaped somehow, and now he's causing havoc in the city. We've tried to recapture him, but he's too fast and too strong. We need you to stop him before more people get hurt." Harvey explained, his voice trembling with fear and desperation. Seraphina nodded, her heart heavy with dread. She knew exactly what she had to do.
