Chapter one
Hours tick by, and the morning sun begins to peek through the windows of the lab. Seraphina can't help but feel a mix of anticipation and nervousness as she prepares the lab for Alex's arrival. She double-checks the incubators, making sure that everything is just perfect for the infants. They're still so small and delicate, and yet they've already brought so much joy and hope into her life.
"He should be here soon; it's almost eight o'clock," Seraphina murmurs to herself, her hands fidgeting nervously. She paces back and forth, taking one last look around the lab before steeling herself and sitting down in one of the chairs beside the incubator. The silence is almost deafening as she waits, her heart hammering in her chest.
Finally, she hears footsteps approaching, and her heart leaps into her throat. Alex enters the room, a mixture of awe and disbelief etched on his face. "You did it," he breathes, taking in the sight of the infants, each one smaller than a human hand. Seraphina's cheeks flush with pride as she watches him approach, his eyes filled with wonder.
"I sure did, Alex," Seraphina says with a proud smile, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. "And I couldn't have done it without you. You were right all along. We're meant to be doing this together. I'm so glad you came back to me." She reaches out, taking his hand in hers, and squeezes it gently.
Alex looks down at their entwined hands, his gaze filled with a mixture of wonder and affection. "You're right, Seraphina. We are meant to be doing this together. And I'm so glad I get to share this moment with you. These infants... they're going to change everything," he says, his voice thick with emotion.
"Have you thought of a name for them?" Alex asked, his voice soft as he leaned in closer to her. "I mean, they're not just our creations; they're our children now. We should give them names that reflect the hope and promise they represent." He paused, his gaze never leaving the tank before him.
"I thought the oldest male clone should be named Adam after the first man," Seraphina began, her voice soft with emotion. "And for the oldest female, I thought Lily, after the flower that symbolizes purity and innocence. As for the younger ones, I thought it would be nice to name them after famous scientists and thinkers who have paved the way for us in this field," she admitted, a small blush creeping onto her cheeks. "So Adam, Lily, and Samuel," she said, gesturing to the first three infants. She smiled, knowing these little ones would change the future of humanity.
"You said there's only three?" Alex asked, confused.
"Oh, I'm sorry, there are three infants in this room right now. I didn't have enough DNA to create a fourth one." Seraphina explained with a hint of sadness in her voice. "But I'm hoping that with the success of these three, we'll be able to continue our research and create more in the future." She glanced at Alex, her eyes shining with determination. "Together, we can change the world, Alex. We can give humanity a chance at a better future," she said, her voice filled with conviction.
Alex's brown eyes meet Seraphina's, and he can see the same determination shining back at him. He takes a deep breath, feeling a surge of emotion wash over him. "You're right," he says, his voice barely above a whisper. "Together, we can change the world. We can give humanity a fighting chance against all the darkness that's been plaguing us. And these infants—they're our first step towards that future." He paused, his gaze drifting back to the tank, where the three tiny forms floated, suspended in amniotic fluid. "They're our hope, Seraphina. Our reason to keep fighting," he finished, his voice thick with emotion.
Seraphina nodded her head, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. "They are, Alex. They truly are. And I promise you, I will give them the best life I can. I'll raise them to be smart, compassionate, and brave. They will know about you and about the sacrifices you made for them. They will know how much you loved them before they were even born." She paused, wiping away a stray tear, before continuing. "And as they grow up, I want them to see the world. I want them to experience everything it has to offer. I want them to see the beauty and the ugliness, the light and the dark. Because of their unique perspective, they will be able to make a difference. They will be able to change things for the better." She finished, her voice filled with determination and hope.
As their gazes watch the three infants squirm and wiggle in their tanks, a surge of emotion overwhelms them. They lean in closer, their hands still clasped together, as if their connection to each other is the only thing keeping them from falling apart. The air in the room feels electric, charged with the potential of what lies ahead. For a moment, they forget about the outside world and everything that brought them here. All that matters is these tiny beings, their future, and the role they play in shaping it.
"Do you know when the babies will be born?" Alex guessed, his voice barely above a whisper. Serahphina shrugged her shoulders. "It's hard to say for sure, but I estimate they'll be born in about nine months. We'll have to wait and see." She replied, her gaze still fixed on the infants. "In the meantime, we should prepare everything for their arrival. We need to set up a nursery, buy clothes and toys, and make sure we have enough formula and medical supplies," she said, her voice filled with both excitement and trepidation.
Alex nodded in agreement. "Of course. I'll do whatever I can to help with the preparations. And once they're born, I want to be there for them too. To be part of their lives, however I can." He glanced back at Seraphina, noticing how her expression softened at his words. "I know it won't be easy raising them on your own, but I'm here for you, Seraphina. Whatever you need, I'll be there," he said, reaching out to gently stroke her cheek.
She leaned in, and the touch of his soft palm on her cheek made her shiver with delight. "Thank you, Alex. I don't know what I'd do without you. You've been such a rock for me through all of this. I promise I'll be a good mother to them. I'll give them the best life I can, and I'll make sure they know about you." She paused, her voice trembling with emotion. "I don't want them to grow up without a father. I want them to have someone who loves them and protects them, just like you did for me." She sighs contently, her eyes never leaving his.
"We'll raise them together, then," Alex said, his voice steady. "As co-parents, if you will. We'll share the joys and the challenges, the triumphs and the heartaches. And I promise you, Seraphina, I'll always be here for them. Even if I'm not physically present, my love for them will be." He paused, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "And who knows? Maybe one day, when the world is ready for them, we'll be able to reveal the truth about their parents. About us," he breathed, his gaze full of hope.
Seraphina's heart swelled at Alex's words. She could feel the weight of responsibility lifting from her shoulders, replaced by a sense of partnership and unity. "Thank you, Alex," she whispered, her voice filled with gratitude. "You have no idea how much that means to me." She leaned forward, their foreheads touching. "Together, we'll make sure they have a life that's full of love, adventure, and joy," she said, her voice steady and determined.
Alex kissed her forehead lightly, feeling a surge of warmth and contentment wash over him. "We'll make sure of it, Seraphina. Together, we will." He glanced back at the infants in their tanks, unable to resist the urge to smile at their tiny, perfect faces. "They're going to grow up in a world that's different from ours. A world that's more accepting and understanding. And we'll be there to guide them through it all. To help them navigate the joys and challenges that lie ahead," he said, his voice filled with hope.
"We'll be ready for them when they come," Seraphina agreed, her hand finding its way into Alex's. "We'll give them a life that's full of love, adventure, and, most importantly, hope. "I hope that they can grow up in a world where they can be whoever they want to be and love whoever they want to love, without fear or judgment." Her eyes sparkled with determination as she looked into Alex's. "And together, we'll make sure that they always know that they are loved, no matter what." She paused, her gaze watching the infants kick and squirm in the artificial wombs she created.
Little did they know what challenges and joys they would face in the future. They both knew that raising triplets, especially in such a unique situation, would not be easy. But they also knew that they were in this together and that they had each other's backs.
