➵ "Old Friends"
"Go to Montana, they said. Prep for the weather, they said. No one told us that this kid will be out in the boonies where the temperature is colder!" I huffed, a white puff appearing everytime I spoke. Frank and I were trudging through snow in the middle of the woods, looking for a cabin that held an unclaimed demigod.
I was sporting a teal parka, thick leggings under my loose black cargo pants, combat boots, a black beanie, and gloves. Frank was also wearing a grey parka, some long johns under his camoflauge cargo pants, combat boots, a black beanie, and his bow and arrows slinged on his back. However, Frank seem to be embracing the cold unlike me. I was shivering worse than a chihuahua.
"We're almost there, Nev." Frank reassured me with a smile. He patted my shoulder, his hands bare to the bitter cold. "Let's just get the demigod, and take him back to Camp Jupiter for now. See if his godly parent will claim him and tell us if he is Greek or Roman."
"Yeah, says the Canadian. You were born used to this weather. I'm not." I whined, shoving my hands deeper into my pockets.
"But you live in New York." Frank furrowed his brows.
"Yeah, and even then I was freezing my butt off. I was born in Texas, Frank. I can handle boiling temperatures- kinda, not negative degrees." I stopped in my tracks, placing my arm in front of Frank. I narrowed my eyes at the brown spot further ahead, on top of a hill.
"What?" Frank asked. "What's wrong?"
"I think that's the cabin." I pointed up ahead. Frank squinted his eyes at the building.
"Yeah, it looks like it. Let's go."
The both of us walked through the feet of snow, finally appearing in front of the cabin. The cabin it self was two stories. It had a red door, with lanterns placed next to it. A porch was holding up the snow from blocking the way into the house There was light coming from on the the windows.
"You knock." I nudged Frank.
"Me? Why me? Why can't you?" Frank shot back, shaking his head.
"Because I'm doing the talking." I beamed. Frank sighed, walking to the front door and knocking. A minute passed and no one answered. Frowning, Frank knocked again. Still no answer. Worry started to flood through my veins. "Check to see if the door is unlocked."
Nodding, Frank twisted the door handle. The door automatically creaked open. Frank turned to look at me over his shoulder with worry. I tapped my charm, Tribturary now in my hands. Frank unslinged his bow, notching an arrow in place.
We silently walked into the house. It was quiet despite the television playing in the background. The only room with light was the light above the staircase. Licking my lips anxiously, I tapped Frank's shoulder and pointed to the staircase.
"Split up? I take the first floor while you take the second?" Frank offered, scanning the area.
"Yeah-"
THUMP!
"Or we can both go to wherever that noise came from." I said, already walking towards the back of the house.
"That sounds like a good idea." Frank agreed, following after me.
I hid behind the wall of the kitchen, peering over to see if anyone was there. The back door was swung open and there was a lady lying unconscious on thr floor. We immediately went towards the women, pressing my fingers against her neck.
"She's alive." I sighed in relief.
A loud scream echoed outside. Frank and I looked at each other before running out the door. There were foot prints and sliding marks that told us the direction they went. Following the tracks, we went into a clearing of sorts.
Not that far in front of us was a red head kid, struggling agaisnt his captors: dracanae. Six dracanae to be exact. I grit my teeth at the sight of them.
"Hey Snake Faces! Leave the poor kid alone." I yelled, stomping my way towards them.
"Daught of the Sssea." One of the dracanae smiled bitterly. "Long time no sssee. How'sss your mother?"
My eyes widened at the mention of my mother. Oh gods...it's her. Instantly, my anger flared. I glanced at the kid who was staring at Frank and I in shock.
"Whatsss the matter? I thought we were old friendsss." The Killer smirked at my reaction. I glared at her, twirling my sword in my hands.
"Frank," I muttered, "hit the two dracanae holding the kid. I'll sweep in and get him to safety."
"Hold them off until you come back?" Frank whispered back, his fingers twitiching to let the arrow go. I gave him a slight nod. Smirking, Frank looked at the two monsters and let his arrow fly. The arrow flew across, hitting the dracanae that was holding the demigod in the arm.
I ran towards the kid, slicing at any dracanae that got in my way. The demigod punched the other dracanae, before coming towards me. Another arrow flew by, landing itself in the forehead of the dracanae that got punched, turning to dust. Grabbing a hold of the kid's hand, I tugged him along. We ran a little past Frank to a fallen tree.
"Stay here, kiddo. We'll tell you when it's safe to come out." I told him, gently pushing him behind the tree.
"My name isn't Kiddo. It's Zach." Zach gruffly replied, kneeling behind the tree.
"Well Zack," I smiled at him, "my name is -"
"Nevah! Little help here!" Frank called out, swinging his bow at the dracanae that already had two arrows in her.
"Gotta go. Remember to stay there until we give the all clear." I reminded Zach before running back to the fight.
I rolled away from a sword coming to my neck. Kneeling, I swept one of my feet at the snake legs. The snake lady hissed in pain. Quickly standing up, I stabbed my sword into her chest. She turned to dust.
Another dracanae slithered towards me, yelling and holding her sword towards me. Glaring at her, I parried the attack away. The dracanae snarled and thrusted her sword toward my chest.
"You know," I twirled away from the dracanae, swiping my sword at her legs. She cried out in pain, her legs now cut off. Falling into the snow, I got closer to her. "When they sent us on a quest to get this kiddo, right here," I pointed to Zack with my sword who coward behind the big log. "I thought this would be fun." I jabbed my sword down at monster, turning her into dust. "Now it's just damn annoying."
"She meant the monsters, not you Zach!" Frank explained, letting another arrow soar through the air and lodging itself into the other dracanae's chest.
"That one snake lady who appearently knows you?" Frank panted out, notching another arrow.
"Yeah? What about her?" I asked, advancing to anothet dracanae.
"She isn't fighting." Frank shot another arrow before pointing the monster out. "She just watching."
"I'll deal with her. Get the last one." I grumbled out, heading towards the snake who killed my mother.
"Daughter of the Sssea." Killer slithered closer to me, starting to circle around. I eyed her sword, the same one she used to kill my mom. "You ready to join your mother?"
"As much as I would love to reunite with her, I got things to do." I stated, twirling my sword in my hands. Snarling, Killer came at me. I raised my sword for a strike. "Like killing you."
Our swords clashed. Clenching my jaw, I kicked at the monster's stomach. Killer stumbled back, gripping her weapon tighter. Advancing towards her, I swung at her side. Killer dodged, thrusting her sword at my arm.
Side stepping away, the sword grazed my arm. Holding back a hiss, I stabbed Tribituary at Killer's stomach. The sword buried itself, the tip pokin through the back.
"I'll kill you next time." Killer hissed before exploding into dust. Sighing in relief, I looked at Frank to see him holding his bow and surrounded by dust.
"You okay?" I asked, walking towards him. He gave me a nod.
"Just a few scratches. You?" Frank slinged his bow into his back before retrieving arrows.
"Same, nothing major." Looking towards Zach I saw him stand up. "Lets go check up on your mom before we take you to safety."
