003. normal teenage life
BEACON HILLS HIGH SCHOOL LOOKED mostly the same to the young Hale as she strode into the admissions office, stares following her every move. The last time she could remember seeing the High school was when it was Derek's first day there.
Valentina had been dragged along early in the morning to drop him off, which was why it was so memorable to her, mainly because of how long she put up a fight against her going. Only this time, it was Derek dropping her off, a sense of revulsion hitting her like a truck.
On the way there, Derek explained to her how he knew Scott and Stiles, and what they had been through. Valentina was astonished how two, seemingly idiotic, boys had managed to survive an alpha and a kanima. Derek didn't yearn to tell her how their uncle had been a killer, who was killed, then brought back to life, but she handled it better than he imagined.
Valentina waited for an administrator impatiently, leaning against a table and ignoring the stares that she was getting. "Hello, how can I help?" The teacher's lengthy, brown hair stood at her shoulders, their two eyes meeting over the table, while she endured the wait for the child's answer imperturbably.
"Sorry," She apologised, unaware of why she had phased out of their conversation, albeit she attempted to continue. "I'm new and I'm just wondering how to get my schedule." Valentina's hands gripped her notebook tightly, that being the only thing she had because of her sudden arrival, along with a singular pen she found on Derek's table.
"Oh alright, welcome." Valentina received the small smile, tucking a few strands of her chocolate hair behind her ear. She glanced behind the teacher, and through the glass door, to see multiple teachers looking angry and rather frustrated.
"I think they might be a while, so I'll just do it." The girl's face stayed in a neutral emotion, as it always did. Valentina never intended to be a burden to anyone, and she thought that if she made her emotions clear in unnecessary situations, that she would be. She thanked the kind teacher, waiting for her name to come at the end. "It's Miss Blake. And your name?"
Various noises around her ringed loudly in her ears, which made her slightly squint while Miss Blake thought that it was just the lights. She knew that they had recently been changed, and they were much brighter than they had been yesterday. "Valentina Hale."
In previous times that she had told people her name, they had been left speechless, and didn't talk to her until they were bidding their farewells. She hoped that this was not the same, considering she needed to get her timetable.
The keyboard clicked loudly, while the printer next to Miss Blake dispersed a single piece of paper. She reached for a pen, writing Valentina's locker number and code onto the sheet with her timetable on, before passing it over to the brunette. As Valentina was about to leave, Miss Blake let slip of her observation, "You don't smile a lot."
Her head turned back to the older woman, but not by much, and lowered it slightly before flicking it back up. "I don't have much to smile about," The Hale answered, exiting from the office abruptly, which left Miss Blake standing there in dead silence, speechless.
Valentina strode proudly down the hallway, her destination being her lockers until she was stopped by two girls, standing awkwardly in front of her. She waited for one of them to begin talking, but neither of them did, for a second it seemed like the brown haired one was going to speak, then she didn't.
The redhead clicked her tongue loudly, making the werewolf wonder even further why there were two girls in front of her wasting her time. "We're Scott's friends. I'm Allison and this is Lydia," When her name was said, she lifted her hand in a little wave, as Valentina remembered when she had heard their names before, making her heart skip a beat.
"Allison Argent?" She asked, already knowing the answer to what seemed to be her question. The two girls shared a concerned look, which made Valentina feel small all of the sudden, a feeling she certainly was not enjoying. "It's a yes or no question."
Allison bit her lower lip, before looking back to Valentina, "Yes, but we don't do that anymore." The werewolf shuddered, fighting off the urge that ran through every bone in her body telling her to run, off of pure instinct. "I promise."
She furrowed her eyebrows, wondering if everyone would jump to conclusion that they would immediately gain her trust, just by saying two words to her. "That requires a large amount of trust, and considering I just met you five seconds ago, I'm going to find that difficult."
"Derek trusts Scott," Lydia began, after taking a huge gasp of air and realising it was going to be rather hard to convince the young Hale that she was safe with them. "And Scott trusts us. Now do you think you can?"
Valentina's eyes looked back and forth between the two girls, before she knew she was going to have to trust them eventually. "We're going to need to do something about your clothes..." Lydia mentioned as she linked her arm with hers, making Valentina do something she never thought she would. The werewolf looked for security in the Argent's eyes, who replied with a reassuring nod and smile.
The three girls walked over to Allison's locker, more people in the hallway than there had been the year before. "Freshmen. Tons and tons of fresh men." Valentina followed Lydia's eye-line to the fourteen year olds walking down the stairs, others just walking through the hallway and cringed at Lydia going for guys two years younger than her.
Allison opened her locker, getting the things out for her first periods and became equally as disgusted as Valentina when she heard what her best friend had said, "You mean fresh boys." The girl didn't disagree, or in fact say anything, which deeply alarmed the two girls next to her. "Lydia, they're fourteen."
"Eh, some more mature than others."
"You know, it's okay to be single. Focus on yourself for a little while, work on becoming a better person." Allison suggested, and for a second, looked over to the werewolf, who was drifting away from the conversation as she had no input on it and had lost interest. They both had a feeling that she was going to react like this, especially because she was a Hale, thinking she was slightly superior.
When Lydia received a call for Stiles, telling her to keep an eye out for a brooding, Hale-like girl, she texted Allison immediately, not knowing what to think about it. Somehow, all of this was unbeknown to Valentina, she didn't know that her cousin asked four teenagers to look out for her, and Derek had no idea how wrongly they were treating his request.
Lydia chuckled, Valentina taking it as a wake up call, "Allison, I love you. So if you need to do that thing where we talk about me and pretend that we're not actually talking about you, it's totally fine." Allison smiled in response, while Valentina rolled her eyes, and took a deep breath which made the girls look towards her, in confusion.
"Where is the relevance here?" After saying this, Valentina began to regret not thinking of skipping the day, she was sure that Derek would want to be around her cousin more than her gaining her education. She always thought that she was never going to need school, that she was going to figure it out on her own, and she still does.
"Basically Val," The werewolf frowned at having a nickname, finding it rather disrespectful. "I don't want a boyfriend, I want a distraction." Lydia turned swiftly away from Allison and towards the Hale, before asking her question with a slightly tilted head, "You never had a boyfriend?
Valentina thought about her answer, giving the effect that she didn't, as she thought that they would already figure out for themselves. "No, sorry. I was too busy, with running from people I thought were trying to kill me, to think about pathetic teenage problems."
"You are a teenager." Allison objected, making the Hale roll her eyes and wonder how she ended up with these people. Without a single doubt about it, Valentina knew that Allison and Lydia were not dumb, but she definitely was not in the mood for any sort of hope.
"I'm aware, thank you." Swiftly, she turned away from the two best friends and searched her pocket for the sheet of paper with her locker number. Valentina ignored the loud noises of students greeting their friends again, looking towards each of the locker's numbers. Once she had found her own, she twisted the numbers to be multiple zeros, and she intended of keeping that way.
A strong scent of anxiousness filled the werewolf's nostrils. This caused her to look behind her, only to see Scott and Stiles running over to her, though Stiles was slightly behind. She rolled her eyes, as she heard Scott ask, "Where's Derek?" Valentina listened to Stiles' heart beat, and it was going faster than she expected, before she saw him looking like he was about to collapse.
"Not here." She looked through the textbooks that had already been placed in her locker, clearly owned by the school. Scott moved towards her, leaning himself against the locker next to hers, as he took a deep breath. Valentina turned to him, and began to wonder what wise things he had to say.
"You don't have to lie to me, I can smell his scent. None of us are your enemy here, we can be your friends. It's okay to feel safe with us, to be a normal teenager." Despite his sincere tone, Valentina stood in front of Scott, laughing. Stiles furrowed his eyes. He had many inquires about her reaction, mainly because he thought of something completely different, even when he knew that he shouldn't have.
Stiles saw something that he had suspicion that nobody was able to, that underneath all the hatred, and Hale-like actions, she was terrified. Little did the Stilinski boy know how correct he was, but she had hidden it so well that even she didn't feel anymore. Valentina realised that Stiles acted differently around her than everyone else did, which led to her strong disliking for him.
"You really need to improve on this werewolf thing." She began, making the two friends looked to each other, as they realised the Valentina had completely ignored the whole speech Scott had made to her. "I'm wearing his shirt." Which proved to the two best friends, that she was not lying to them.
"Oh," Scott murmured, seemingly ashamed that he was not taking his usual path of immediate trust with the Hale that stood two feet away from him. Valentina flicked through her multiple school books, and still attempted to stay in tune with the conversation, but soon realised that they had no topic, and that they were just hanging around her, for no reason.
"I've been told of what you've done here, with the kanima and Peter." The werewolf informed them, as she finally managed to find one of the two books that she was looking for. The werewolf moved away from the locker that he was previously leaning against, and he looked towards his friend in surprise, while Stiles continued to look at her.
"You're impressed?" Stiles asked, rather cockily before she picked up her final book, wrapping all of them tightly in her arms. A small scoff was released from her mouth. Scott and Stiles followed her towards the stairs, her head facing forwards as she began to walk up them, before she stopped.
"On the contrary, I believe that Peter made a stupid choice with choosing you to be his beta." She retorted, looking back towards the boys to say, "Now, if you don't mind I am trying to get back to being a normal teenager." Valentina flicked her hair over to the other side of her head, ruining her previous parting.
Scott uncrossed his arms, turning to face Stiles as he inquired, "How we going to do this when she won't even be around us?" A huff leaving his mouth, as they both began to walk to their lockers, which were remarkably close to Valentina's. That was thanks to Stiles, and his midnight skills in getting into the school's system.
"I've got first period with her." The werewolf furrowed his eyebrows, opening his locker whilst his friend next to him had already come prepared, with his books for Physics and English. He tapped his locker anxiously, "How do you know— actually I'm not gonna ask. I'm not going to ask." Scott stopped, telling himself that he could not be bothered to think about what illegal things that his best friend had done.
"See you in English."
